Eve's POV
Flasback
>>>>
"What should we do, Eve? He has her!" Darren panicked.
"I don't know! Where do you think he'll hide?" I asked.
"I have no idea. Let's check the basement!"
Both Darren and I swiftly ran down the basement of Carson's house.
It was pitch black but when the lights flickered....
We were too late.
Alexis was tied on ropes, a handkerchief covering her mouth.
"MMMfhfffttttttt.!!!!" She muttered, under the handkerchief.
"Don't worry! We're coming to get you!" I said calmly.
She violently shook her head signaling us to not go near her.
I saw a glimpse of light behind her, something sparkly.
However, Darren sprinted towards her, taking off her handkerchief.
"Don't worry. You're safe.." Darren says calmly.
She coughed and shook her head once more.
She violently shook her head signaling us to not go near her.
I saw a glimpse of light behind her, something sparkly.
However, Darren sprinted towards her, taking off her handkerchief.
"Don't worry. You're safe.." Darren says calmly.
She coughed and shook her head once more.
"Run! You shouldn't be here!" Alexis panicked.
"Huh? We've come to save you!" Darren says, untying the ropes around Alexis.
The next thing we know-- We heard a gun shoot.
"DARREEENNNN!!!!!" Alexis sobbed, hugging Darren.
Darren was shot on the chest.
"This is what happens when you don't obey me."
I hid behind the wall only to see Carson.
"Don't do this! Stop this, Carson!"
"Be with me, Alexis." He begged.
"No! I love Darren! Please... Let us love each other and be happy... If you love me--"
"No, Alexis. If I can't have you, nobody can." Carson growled.
With that, he hit Alexis using a metal steel chair.
He hit her on the head.

Afterwards, he sobbed, apologizing to Alexis then left.
I regretted on being a coward. I could've charged in and helped Darren.
But it was fear. Fear overtook me.
I gasped, running towards them. I called the hospital... Twice.
Ambulances came rushing, bringing in stretchers and I just watched.
I was embarrassed to be even called Alexis' best friend.
I went with them and hopped in the ambulance.
I watched over them the whole time.
Darren's chest was bleeding; Alexis' head was also bleeding.
Two of my friends got hurt all because of my fear and Carson's selfishness.
Eversince the beginning, Carson grew a liking towards Alexis. However, Alexis and Darren had mutual feelings for each other since they were kids.
When they started dating, Carson felt terrible. It's ironic how Carson became Darren's best friend.
Darren loved Alexis. But he also loves Carson, as his best friend.
But by the events of tonight.... I don't think they'll be friends again.
~
Two hours later, the doctor came in to talk to me.
I was sitting by the seats outside the emergency room when he talked to me.
He said everything was fine.
Darren woke up a couple of minutes ago, it was good he managed to survive the chest shot.
He kept asking me about Alexis' condition but I have no idea as well.
The doctor told me Alexis' head was hit too hard that her skull cracked a bit.
Therefore, she needed to undergo surgery.
When Darren and Carson heard about this, both parties were depressed.
Carson didn't bother strike a conversation with Darren knowing it was all his fault.
However, I can see in Darren's eyes that he had forgiven him.
A month after the surgery's been done, we were excited to finally see Alexis.
The doctor told us that she was perfectly fine.

When we entered the room, Darren swiftly went to her side, hugging her.
He was crying because of pure joy to see his girlfriend after a month in the hospital.
However, Alexis seems confused.
The worst possible thing we could've thought happened.
"Who are you?"
That's what he asked Darren.
She knows me, she knows Carson, everyone but him.
Carson knew this was his chance.
He told Darren to give him a chance to love Alexis.
Darren... he gave in.
He felt hopeless that Alexis couldn't remember him.
Therefore, he agreed to give Alexis to Carson in one condition--
He must never hurt her or else...
He will tell her the truth.
After that, everything went smoothly.
Alexis was discharged from the hospital, thinking it was anemia that got her there.
She forgot all her memories about Carson being kidnapped.
The worst part is-- She thinks Carson is her boyfriend eversince.
Her memories must've jumbled up causing her to mistake Darren from Carson.
Darren begged me to not say anything to Alexis even if I objected at first.
However, Darren was scared that if we bring up the past to Alexis... her memories would get jumbled up once more. She'll be confused and that might hurt her.
Her head is still healing and so.. if the only way for Alexis to heal is for Darren to forget their memories together then....
It's okay with him.
The pain is still there.
He bears with it everytime he sees Carson and Alexis together.
But....
For the people he loves, he must sacrifice for it.
And both of us couldn't believe that the time has come for Alexis to know the whole truth behind everything he'd been through..
**
There's the flashback!
*Sniff*
Poor Darren!!! Boohoo!
Oh well, see you in the next chappie;)

Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
