《Son of Artemis Book 4》Chapter 3

Yeah, so Thena' was being a bitch. Not quite as bad as Hera but pretty dam close. But Annabeth solved that problem...somehow...I'm too scared to ask though considering how she came to us afterwards. Though she seems to have a semi-stable relationship with Athena. Most certainly a better one than father and myself...which is better than Percy's and his sperm donor's.

Oh yeah training bluh bluh bluh it was hard. Starting off Percy was worse with the spear but after that I was last place in every other category of weapons we used in our training. Like seriously what did the hunt teach these two when I was a tree? I'm the daughter of Zeus king of the gods I'm supposed to be the best.

Though I suppose it's good I am not. Artemis was training me mentally, from mental manipulation like charmspeak for instance. And well she taught me that it's ok not to be the best in all things. She said a jack of all trades is a master of none but often times better than a master of one.

I wanted to know what she meant but I think she was just trying to help me understand I'll never be the best in all things but if I'm good enough in many things I'll be good enough most of the time.

I mean I want to be the best because I've seen, and heard, how much my becoming a tree hurt Annabeth and I don't want to put her...or Percy for that matter, through that again, or well the first time for Percy. Where was I now?

Oh yeah training...it was hard I wasn't the best which frustrated me, much to the amusement of Percy and Annabeth. I swear they are so frustrating when training, but...but I love them nonetheless. It's just training that frustrates me.

Anyways Athena worked on our spear, spear and shield, which Annabeth was just given a simple polished bronze shield for, as well as teaching multiple variations of sword(s), and hand to hand combat. Lady Artemis, she worked on mine and Annabeth's archery, knives/daggers, and throwing knives. Though, Percy was always practicing that himself during this time or helping us, he rarely had lessons because how far behind I was.

Apollo, being the lazy bum he is, only occasionally helped his sisters teach us, but most of the time annoyed us with poetry. I swear if I have to hear one more haiku that ends in "I am so Awesome" I am going to have one less half brother.

Though, as I've already mentioned, Artemis was my mental teacher. Athena, however, was Annabeth's and they also worked on strategy, mainly by playing strategy games. They even recruited us to play some of them occasionally.

One was called Hearts of Iron 4 and since Annabeth, Percy, and I refused to fight against each other, we played as the allies and was given the objective to defeat the Axis and Comintern before 1945. We always took Apollo out first as he was given Italy and Artemis usually took the Soviets or Japan. Athena though always Germany. And then Percy and I switched between Britain and the US, and Annabeth the French, but she made up all the military plans and who produces what.

It only took like three games for Percy and I to learn a cheese for the US and Britain to make it practically unfair playing against us.

Yeah after that Athena stopped that war-game as we learned to cheat the system. So now they just do simulations themselves with our troops and monsters on a board or on paper.

Boring I know. But the sad thing is we never got to prank Zoë. Like it was one of the few things I was actually looking forward to doing as well. But the hunt was taking care of monster encampments while looking for intel for us on the dangerous monsters.

We had a report about a Drakon at camp but Apollo spewed a stupid prophecy and we aren't allowed to tell until the oracle says it. Short story short is that that Drakon is going to have hades to pay when Clarisse gets to it.

But yeah it's been fun and all learning the fighting and the short bit of strategy where Percy and I were practically cheating.

"CHILDREN" Artemis yelled for us.

Annabeth, Percy, and I all rushed to where Artemis was to ask what she was requesting. "Yes mom" Percy asked as he, Annabeth, and I all came to a stop colliding with one another.

Artemis let out a small laugh, "ok now that you're here, we have one more week of training before you all have to go to camp for summer"

"Do we have to go back" I asked, as honestly I preferred this, even if I couldn't prank Zoë. Camp is just soooo...boring...and stagnant you know. Like you only do something, if you go on a quest.

"Yes you do" she responded, "you and Percy are to lead the demigods when the final prophecy is to come. And Annabeth is to be your lead strategist. You need to be with the troops to know them and garner their respect" she said

"And how do we do that" Percy asked, "like yeah they might respect me, but to lead them into battle is a different matter of respect"

Artemis sighed, "I was really hoping I didn't have to tell but Apollo foresaw an attack on the camp, I can't tell you how or when though"

"Will any of you stop by to continue our training" Annabeth asked

"As per Apollo's vision we can't interfere and thus we won't be able to but you will be resuming our training after the summer" Artemis answered, "now who wants to spar me in knives"

Only Percy raised his hand. I, as well as Annabeth, apparently knew we stood no chance, but for some reason, I feel like Percy was holding back when he was training with us on knives, on the rare occasion that he did train with us on them. Annabeth told me he was really good, but I haven't seen that yet.

Their spar started and all there was was a blur of auburn hair and silver clothing from both sides.

I leaned over to Annabeth, "since when can they move this fast" I asked

Annabeth just shrugged as if she didn't have the answer

The spar was going on for I want to say thirty minutes when all the sudden my ADHD told me to lean left, which I did and just in time to, as a knife was sticking out of the tree behind me where my head just was.

I don't know who's knife it was though. All the sudden I heard Percy say "yield mother"

I turned and looked back at the fight to see that Artemis was without her knives and looking on with pride at Percy.

"I yield son" she said, "it only took you one draw and 49 losses but you have finally bested me once. Congratulations"

"You were holding back though" Percy said, and Artemis immediately shook her head no.

"Maybe in the first five minutes to warm up, but after that no. I did everything short of using my true form"

Now, I don't know if it was mine or Annabeth's jaw that made the sound, probably both, but I heard at least one hit the ground.

"But but but how" I stammered.

"He's been training with them with myself and the hunt effectively nonstop since he was seven and as Annabeth has told you the hunt is far more skilled than that camp of the demigods"

"But you're a goddess" Annabeth stated

"Who did everything short of using her true form, which would kill you three and I'm not going to be the cause of death of my son"

"It still doesn't make sense" Annabeth said, "like Ares I understand because he's in like the top 3 dumbest olympians. But you"

"Annabeth, my daughter, there is only one universal truth in training and fighting. And that is that the student will eventually out do the master. Especially when said master has a preference for bow and arrows, while the student has a preference of blades" Athena stated from the sidelines
