《The Son of Artemis Book One》Chapter 14: A Bus To Nowhere

As we packed in I recognized that Argus was the one who is driving us from camp to somewhere, we can go to catch a bus or something to Los Angeles. I was sitting peacefully in the back listening to Peter's insufferable attempts at flirting with Annabeth, who choose to sit in front of me but next to him. I guess being cramped in the corner of a passenger van is not her thing.

"Will you shut up, she is obviously not interested and you are a bit young to start thinking about dating" I shouted at him, and Annabeth looked thankful

"Really, and who wouldn't want to be with me after I killed a hellhound with no training" He retorted

"One you didn't kill the hell hound, two Annabeth was there to witness the event, and I recall she slapped you for acting like a baby because you got covered in monster dust, and three you are forgetting your parents hate each other" I answered, and he just ignored me and continued flirting. OH, how I wish I brought one of my sisters who's also daughter of Athena on this quest. She would have either killed or neutered him by now, but I don't think either would have gotten him to shut up.

Argus stopped the van and he even started to look annoyed at Peter's insufferable attempt at flirting. We took our bags and got out of the van, and as soon as the door was closed Argus sped away.

I looked around and saw that there was a missing, and wanted for questioning posters for Peter but I ignored them. The quest is more important, and sadly Peter does have to be the one to return the bolt. The helm I'm not so sure about because not many care about Hades and the prophecy was referring to a singular object that he has to return.

"I got us three bus tickets to Los Angeles" Annabeth said returning to us from the bus depot, "The bus leaves in 30 minutes though"

"but that's like forever" Peter complained, "and why can't we fly it's much quicker"

"Well, if you want Zeus to kill us all because of you, I guess we can fly" I sassed, and I heard my mom's and uncle's voice laughing in my head from that. It is a weird feeling if you ask me.

"well that doesn't seem problematic" Peter said

"You're forgetting you are included in that death" Annabeth said in her I'm smarter than you way. Which I have noticed she has stopped using as often towards me.

Peter sighed before twirling his new pen sword with his fingers. I was board so I did the same but with riptide. "Why are you doing that the mortals are going to see" Peter said acting like he just said something smart for once. He's probably trying to impress Annabeth, by being smart, but it's not working.

"Have you ever heard of a lovely thing called the mist" I asked and he shook his head no. "Well, I'll summarize it for you, it makes things like this and other godly/immortal events look completely different from what it actually looks like. For instance, most mortals will see this as a baseball bat" I explained, Peter still looked confused

"How does it work though"

Annabeth and I shared a look before simply stating magic because the real explanation will likely fly right over his head. It will fly over most people's heads so I don't really blame him there, and it's not completely a lie as Hecate is the goddess of magic and she's the goddess of the mist as well.

All the sudden there was an announcement made over the loudspeakers calling for those taking our bus to start boarding. We got in line and I noticed three old ladies coming up from some benches to finish off the line. I knew they saw me, and I know who they are really well. I'm going to kill Hades for sending them here, he should know I'll get his damn helm back, once I find the idiot who turned. I think it's Ares because he's the only one that likes war and benefits from it.

When we got on the bus, Peter ran to the back and took the last row of seats like a little kid would. I sighed knowing strategically that's the worse place to be on the bus as it is already placing us in a corner with no exits, and Annabeth seemed to be thinking the same, but she didn't know about the furies about to board.

Annabeth and Peter threw their bags in the overhead compartment/storage, and I kept my things, knowing this bus isn't going to last long. "Why are you keeping your bag" Peter asked

"gut feeling" I responded simply.

I was looking down the aisle and saw that Tisiphone and Megaera had their legs crossed in an x that clearly stated nobody leaves. I began wondering if we were on a bus to Maximum Security Penitentiary, but considering the lack of police or government agents, I quickly tossed that thought aside.

We sat there quietly until the bus started moving and Annabeth looked at me, "Percy, are those the kindly ones"Annabeth whispered in my ear and I nodded slightly. She paled and I knew she was working on a plan to get us out of there. "You didn't think to tell me of this before we got on the bus" She complained.

"Well, I was considering it, but since this idiot wanted to act like a little kid and sit all the way back here I concluded we will need to fight our way out instead of diving for an exit" I said, and Annabeth just glared at me.

"Hey, I'm not an idiot" Peter said finally catching on to our conversation.

I told him to look down the aisle, and he paled seeing whichever fury was his teacher at that school he went too. "My point and case, as you decided to not pay attention to your surroundings and sat all the way back here forcing us to come with you" I scolded, "and just in case you didn't know the other two with their legs crossed are her sisters" I finished

"I got it" Annabeth whisper shouted, "Peter take this and hide. They are most likely looking for you and will ignore us when they realize you are not here." she explained and handed over her Yankees cap, right as we were entering the Lincoln tunnel.

The three furies all at once announced they had to use the restroom, which I wonder why mortals didn't think as weird, then again they probably think they are old ladies. I quickly asked Annabeth if she really wanted to give her hat up and she shook her head no.

They got back and transitioned to be more like, well what you expect a torturer of the underworld to look like. "Where is it? where is it" Alecto screeched

I quickly put my hand over Annabeth's mouth knowing her answer will likely just piss them off more. "Look we don't have it. The idiot we were with is too stupid to ever steal it, and no his stupidity is not an act, so he doesn't have it. So tell Lord Hades, I'm coming to ask what he knows as his drama queen of a brother is too busy arguing with Poseidon to be of any help at the moment. We good" I said and they remained quiet. "Good. We are going to send you back to him now" I said.

"Annabeth you take one of Alecto's sisters and don't be afraid they are better at torture than fighting" I said, and all three looked at me like I was going to pay for that comment. I quickly stabbed Alecto after that but she still lived to fight on.

Annabeth went after Tisiphone leaving me with Megaera and Alecto. "So who wants to go home first" I asked and Megaera charged me, despite the small confines of the bus. I quickly ducked under her whip and sliced her clean in half and she dissolved instantly.

"You better be telling the truth Perseus" Alecto said, before I cut her head off. I looked over at where Annabeth was and saw her fuming mad and covered in monster dust. I wonder why she's mad.

She came back and sat down next to me, " I can't believe he didn't help us" She stated angrily. I know why now. "Like seriously we could have died there and he would be screwed for this quest. Heck I doubt he would have been able to make it back to camp" she fumed. All of the sudden the bus took a hard turn and scrapped up against the tunnel before shooting out of it in an uncontrolled spin.

Now don't ask me but somehow, the bus driver was able to take an exit and we were shooting down some road north and away from civilization. I looked out the window and saw the woods to one side and the Hudson to the other and sighed when I felt the emergency brakes come on.

I saw the bus driver bail out of the bus followed by the rest of the passengers in a stampede. I waited there a moment before Peter took the yankees cap off looking proud of himself. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and heard Annabeth shouting to leave now. We quickly bailed out of the bus, which shortly after I left was struck by lightning and exploded. I along with everyone else nearby was dazed from the closeness of the lightning strike and a few moments later, the other passengers were whining about their stuff being destroyed. I however, grabbed Annabeth's and Peter's arm and dragged them into the woods.
