《The Son of Artemis Book One》Chapter 1: Where it all begins

I was just released from the hospital today, and was now running for my life. Now why was I just released from the hospital and running for my life. Well the first is an easy answer, I just gave birth to my son, Perseus. The latter, well, he's a son of Poseidon, and yes the Gods do exist, and I have a child with one. The only problem is that we are now being chased by a Cyclops, who likely wants my child as a nice snack or something.
I don't know how long I was running for, but I know it was a few hours as it was becoming dark now and I found my way into a thick forest. Surprisingly, Perseus has been pretty good this whole time with me running. I went to lean up against the tree so I could rest and feed my son, I'm starting to hope that if I don't make it that at least my son would be able to make it. Once he was done feeding, I burped him and got back on the run just having a gut feeling.
My feeling turned out to be right as a minute later I heard an outraged scream, and what sounded like a tree getting obliterated. I kept running though and I could see that Perseus understood, that we may not make it, and he seemed to try and be comforting me by smiling. With my constant running I found myself coming up on a lake and started praying to Poseidon to at least come and save his son, but I got no sign or recognition of response.
I was with my hunters as usual, and decided that I would go out on a small hunt and see if I can get us any food. I may be the goddess of the hunt and wilderness, but I don't use my abilities to cheat in these circumstances. However, my hunting trip was cut short when I heard a monster bellow in rage and the sound of a tree shattering shortly after. That monster is dangerous, and definitely too close to my hunt to let it go free. So, I made my way to where the sound came from and tracked it.

Two minutes of tracking later, I came to a small clearing at a lake, and saw a woman running towards said lake closely followed by a cyclops. I'm guessing she is clear sighted and is just on the run trying to survive as I don't see her with any weapons. I took my aim to kill the cyclops, but it brought down its club before my arrow reached it and hit the woman clear across the beach, but what caught my eye she turned to take the brunt of both impacts with her backside/shoulders. I didn't watch the cyclops turning into the classic golden monster dust, as I made my way over to the woman, hoping to save her.
As I ran my way over, I started to have a dreaded feeling that she won't make it, she's mortal and half-bloods would have some trouble surviving a hit like that, especially when they are alone without supplies. "Lady...Artemis, is that you" I heard her voice choke out, barely above a whisper.
"Yes. It is I" I responded a bit shocked that she recognized me and knew of the mythological world. I took a look at her and noticed a little blue bundle that she was clutching close to her, and my shock was resolved, seeing the child is likely a demigod.
She seemed to take notice of my look to the bundle in her arms, "Can...can you please look after him? I know you're not one to...to like males, but you can raise him to be better, he was only born yesterday. Please can you raise him?" the woman said choking on her own blood. Surprising me with how long she was holding on.
I thought about her request quickly, on one side the child is a male, on the other I and my hunters can raise him to not carry the terrible maleish traits, that are usually present. I made up my mind fairly quickly, "I will care for him as if he was my own, but what is his name" I asked the mother
"His... name...is...is Perseus " She said spitting out more blood than I've seen any other do, "Please, tell him ... that I...I will always love him" she croaked. I knew her time had come, as the light left her eyes when she finished, and the cries of the child seemed to simultaneously start.

I sat in a short shock as the baby started to cry for his mother. I gently removed the bundle from her and started to sooth the child, who just used his little hands to grab onto my shirt and hold tight. When I was soothing him I noticed that the waters of the lake were unnaturally rough and choppy. I looked back down at little Perseus and saw him tiring quickly and falling asleep. Once the child was asleep, I carried him with one arm and gave his mother funeral rights and a small blessing, asking for Hades to ensure she is placed in Elysium.
After giving his mother her funeral rights, I started to cradle the baby in my arms and look at him more closely. He didn't really have anything for hair yet, as far as I could tell, and with him sleeping I couldn't see his eyes. I also found one of those hospital bands with his full name on it. It turns out he was named Perseus Jackson, weird normally mothers give their children two given names nowadays. I already made up my mind though, to adopt him as my own son. Which lucky me it was a full moon tonight so, I could perform this properly. The only other time would be during a blood moon, but that was a couple months away .
I waited a few short moments, until the moon would be at its highest point above us, to begin the ceremony. Though I would like for my hunters to be here, I simply didn't have enough time to gather them and explain. I pulled out my knife and prick my thumb with it enough to draw Ichor, and proceed to draw the crescent moon on his forehead, and started proclaiming him as my son, in ancient greek.
"I Artemis the Daughter of Zeus and Leto, Goddess of the Moon, Hunt, Wilderness, Archery, Maidenhood, and Childbirth, adopt and proclaim you, Perseus Jackson, as my son. May you be known as the son of the moon, hunt, wilderness, and archery, the Son of Artemis. Let your blood mix with mine, and become my own flesh and blood, as I swear on the Styx to take you in as my own, and raise you as per your mother's final wishes" I finished the oath, to hear the distance, but loud rumble of thunder sealing both the oath and adoption.
I looked down at Perseus, to see him looking back up at me surrounded by the familiar silver glow of my hunters, and him smiling brightly at the glow trying to grab at it. He gave up rather quickly having seen his hands just go through the glow, and turned to look at me keeping his smile the whole way. I took this time to finally get a good look at his eyes, and noticed that they have become a silvery green, which is just confirming my suspicions further past than what I already had. He was the son of Poseidon, but that doesn't matter now, as he is my son now, and there is no chance, even in the deepest parts of hell, that I would ever allow for Poseidon to claim Perseus.
I picked up my son, with him still giving his bright smile, and I'm beginning to wonder why he's always smiling, as I start to cradle him in my arms lulling him back to sleep. I started making my way back to my hunters, and realized that I never asked how they would feel about this. A whole bunch of what ifs began to enter my mind, most of them concerning the survival and health of the baby in my arms.

I am not professionally trained as a writer but I have tried my best to teach myself and make the chapters as clean as possible. I believe I have reached a point where my limited skills cannot improve the work or make any more corrections. It is very difficult to show this work, but if I do not, I fear I will never improve and learn. So here it is. To anyone who lends the time to read all of this and any of my chapters. Thank you.
