《Chasing Rain ✓》Care

Even if I die, I know someone is there for Amber.

-Rain

I didn't know that Damien could be such a baby. Being worried about something that is too far. But if right now I compare my dad with him them they have so many similarities. Only if dad was here then both of them should have been drinking together.

I even know what dad should have said, "You should have been my soulmate if you should have been a woman."

Dad and his weird sense of humour. Only if.....

No Rain this is no time to think about such things. I scolded myself and brought my concentration back to the meal presented in front of me.

My stomach was full but I have eaten only half the stake of pancakes. It was extremely delicious and I was guilty of wasting it but I couldn't eat anymore.

"Eat it completely.", Damien said in a husky tone. I don't know if it was only me or his voice was always this sensual.

I shook my head. If I eat anymore then my stomach will burst. I can't eat anymore. Damien looked at me. His grey orbs urging me to eat further but I shook my head.

In between Amber pushed her cheese sandwich in my direction urging me to take a bite. But she used so much force to hold it and the cheese inside the sandwich spilled on my black dress.

"Baby!", I said softly. I simply asked Damien to pick Amber up so that I could use the restroom to fix my dress. I got out of my seat and made my way to the restroom whose direction I asked from one of the waitress.

I stood near the basin and took out a pack of tissue from my purse. I wetted one of the tissue and gently rubbed it at the area where the cheese has spilled. I looked at my work and sighed. The stain was gone and now only that area was wet. I turned around to leave the bathroom but I collided with someone.

"I am so sorry.", I said without looking up.

"Rain!"

I heard the voice of the person I have collided with and I instantly recognized it.

Harper

I looked up to see the same old woman but this time even more older and for once her perfect make up couldn't hide her wrinkles.

Guess time flies by way to quickly.

She was grinning ear to ear. I didn't know she would be this happy to see me. Me! Out of all the people.

I didn't even try returning her broad grin with even a small smile. She didn't deserve it.

But I did something I never did earlier. I looked straight in her eyes.

Surprise

Her eyes showed it. Maybe she wasn't expecting me to look in her eyes. But I did with a look saying 'time has changed, so have I'.

"You look gorgeous in your black dress.", she hushed. I simply nodded my head.

"Excuse me.", I stated as I started walking out of the restroom. But she caught my wrist and stopped me mid way.

"What's the hurry darling? Lets talk for a while. We have so much to catch up.", she said a bit too sweetly.

I couldn't stop the scoff that left my mouth. It sounded absurd coming out of her mouth. Such sweet words don't suit a woman like her.

"I have nothing to talk with you Harper.", I said a bit too rudely but I didn't care about it at that moment. Her presence itself reminded me of my horrific past. A past that catches me every time I try to run away from it.

"I am sorry honey I couldn't help you at that time.", she said making an apologetic face.

Liar

All lies. She could have helped me at that time but she decided not to just because he gave her some money to keep her mouth shut and the worst part she agreed to him. She might think I don't know about the bribery thing but she is wrong. I knew everything.

"You know I was myself scared of Marcus."

I winced at that name. His name was enough to make painful chill run down my spine.

I didn't give a response. I didn't have any comeback. Maybe she was scared of him. Hell, everyone was terrified of him but she still could have helped me. All she needed to do was call the cops. But what she did, she happily watch me in misery.

"I neither want to talk to you nor I want to listen about him.", I stated coldly. It was the first time that my hard words didn't make me flinch. Maybe because she deserved it.

"Okay let us not talk about the past. Let us talk about the present. You live with one of the richest tycoon and have such a lovely daughter. Just as beautiful as her mother.", she said with a smile.

If she should have been someone else. I should have blushed at the compliment and muttered a shy thank you. But I know her and her next words proved it.

"I would love to meet your husband or boyfriend. It will be so great to meet such celebrity and maybe it will give me the entry to the high class society of the town.", she said dreamily.

Vixen

She just wants to profit from me and nothing else. Lust for money and status was dripping from her body. I felt utterly disgusted. Was this the woman I thought will hopefully be my savior.

I didn't reply this time I simply walked past her and exited the restroom. Before reaching Damien and Amber I looked begins to see if she was following me. But I sighed when I noticed she was not.

I made my way to the last table where I could see Amber sitting on Damien's lap and both were looking at something outside.

"Sorry.", I whispered as I reached them both.

"Took you way to long.", Damien said.

"Umm.. The stain was too stubborn.", I said as I pushed back the bangs that were falling on my face.

I looked up to see Damien was looking at me with a raised brow. I decided to ignore it. I looked at the watch to see it was 12 o'clock. God the funeral must have ended by now.

"Dam.."

I was cut by the ringer off my phone. I looked at the caller to see it was Nana. I picked the call and placed the cell near my ear.

"Where are you darling? Lila has been buried.", Nana stated. I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose. Just great! Now according to Damien's words we are going to be fashionably late but a bit too late.

"Everyone is in our house. Come directly to our house.", Nana stated and I muttered an okay before cutting the call.

"Lila has already been buried so we need to go to Nana's house.", I said. Damien just nodded his head as he picked up Amber. I looked at the table to see that the plates were already gone. Maybe he has already paid the bill. I thought.

"Come angel.", I heard his voice.

I turned around to see he has already reached the door. God why I always zone out? Just to save myself the embarrassment I nodded my head and swiftly followed him out of the dinner.

Damien opened the door for me. I thanked him and got in. Next he placed Amber on my lap as he made his way to his side. Soon he started the car and once again we were on the road.

I looked outside lost in my own thoughts as Amber played with the bracelet on her hand.

"You know I am way too good and catching lies and you are one of the worst liars I have ever seen.", Damien asked me casually as casually as a person asks their neighbor about the weather.

But his words made my heart beat faster. Please don't ask me. Please don't ask me. Please don't ask me. I continued to chant it in my mind because I knew I wouldn't be able to answer any of his questions.

I looked up at him to see his eyes were fixed in the road. His grip on the steering wheel firm and his face neutral.

"It is personal.", I muttered with the hope that it would shut him up. It was the best I could say.

"Is it something I should be worried about.", he asked me.

Yes

"No", I said.

"But your face was very pale when you reached us.", Damien added.

I was extremely surprised. I didn't know Damien would observe me this closely.

"I..I.."

I didn't know what to say or what to justify. I had no reply. I hung my head. This is the end Rain.

I heard Damien sigh. I looked up at him. He looked deep in thought and his face expressions were conflicting.

"You know I have no right to ask you as it is your personal space. Moreover till the time you keep yourself away from danger you can do anything you want.", Damien said as he turned in my direction.

His eyes shone sincerity but what touched my heart were his simple words that gave a powerful message that I care.

No more conversations were made and not like it was needed. The atmosphere inside the car was warm and pleasant.

Soon we reached at Nana's house. Many cars were parked on the road here and there. Damien soon found a space for parking and soon the car came to rest. We all exited the car as Damien picked up Amber.

As we stood in front of the house nostalgia hit me. It has just only been three and a half days I have left the house but it felt like ages.

I pressed the bell and the annoying song must to my dismay, I am a Barbie girl played. I heard Damien chuckle from the back but I didn't turn around. I felt why not the earth just swallow me at that moment. Well can't help my grandparents are crazy.

Nana opened the door and as soon as she saw me well she squealed like a child. I couldn't help but smile. That's just like my Nana.

She took me in a warm hug. I missed her scent I breathed it in and I felt calm and home. A place I will be safe forever. The hug was tight but I didn't complain. I enjoyed the warmth.

After a minute she let go of me. Her eyes glistening with unshed tears but so were mine.

"Where is my cupcake?", Nana asked before looking at the back.

"My baby!", she squealed as she picked up Amber from Damien's arms.

"Old man look your favorite girls are here.", she shouted as she carried Amber inside.

Maybe she forgot it was someone's funeral. Soon everyone came around and started mingling with each other.

"I am sorry for your loss.", I said to aunt Ella. She simply nodded and continued drinking her orange juice. She looked like she had no care of the world. Like she didn't mind her daughter has died.

Or maybe she was pretending. I couldn't make it out.

"Dont worry about her. As I don't mind Lila's death, she also doesn't mind Lila's death. She is more worried about the life insurance money she would get.", Nana whispered in my ears.

Maybe she was right. Well Lila never had the most loving parents and maybe this lack of attention made her all jealous and worked up.

If something should have happened to Amber then I don't know what I should have done. But I shook my head. It is no time to think about such things.

I looked to see Damien was as closed as ever. Staying away from the crowd and due to his intimidating stance no one tried to reach him. But what was touching was that his eyes never left Amber as if he was guarding her from away. Satisfaction build up in my heart because I knew even if I was gone Damien would be there for my Amber. Standing tall and strong.

"Rain.", I heard a voice from the back. So I turned around to see another person I never wanted to see again.

Darius

What the hell was he doing here?

"Can we talk?", he asked me.

I shook my head. I didn't have the energy to deal with him. I was tired.

"Please just once. I just need to apologise.", he said. His voice pleading.

"Say it then.", I said as I looked back to make sure Amber was not looking here. She was happily in Nanu's arm munching a cookie. But as I looked in Damien's direction his eyes were directly at me.

Darius shook his head. I was confused wasn't he who wanted to talk. Looking at my confused expression he continued.

"Lets talk somewhere private."
