《Journey to the Old Era (Drisana's Mahabharat #1)》Chapter 4

5 days later the Pandavs along with Kunti and Drisana reached Varanavat. It had taken that much time before Nakul seemed it fit for her to travel. They still hadn't managed to communicate except a few words with hand gestures with her.

Yudhisthir decided to send men to find her family or relatives as soon as they reached Varanavat. Bheem was sure because of the head injury she had lost her mental balance (bikshipt ho gayi hai becari). Arjun was skeptical about her as she seemed rather watchful and observatory. Nakul was sure her head injury was healing fine and had nothing to do with her strange behaviour. Sahdev tried to find out where she's from by giving her the Aryavart's map and also handed her a scroll and ink. Her grimace confirmed his suspicion that she was illiterate. Kunti had decided to take the poor girl under her wings and she took care of her like a daughter.

As for Drisana, she was thinking and observing these strange people. It was like she had landed 3000 years back in time which wasn't possible. These people with their weird language, weird clothing and weird customs confused her to no end. She had once encountered a tribe where all the people were named after some greek mythology. Maybe this tribe also followed something like that and their names were taken from the Mahabharat epic. But She couldn't remember what happened after the basement incident or how she landed among them. Hoping against hope she tried to make hand gestures of phone, nearby town, which country this was, where was the nearest police station, anything. But it all went in vain. She was sure the giant guy thought her to be mad. After five days of rest, they started going somewhere.

In chariots and palanquins.

Okay. At least they weren't walking on barefoot. The journey was hell. But they were at a slower pace. And she was annoyed and bored sitting inside a palanquin for days. But she also understood they were moving slowly because of her only. No matter how strange these people were, they had a good heart. She was greatful for that.

After two days journey they reached some village. It was as strange as them. Drisana thought this might be where they reside. When she asked about this place, Kunti answered it was 'Varanavat'. Odd. First Pandavs, now Varanavat. These people seemed to be obsessed with Mahabharat.

Purochan with his wife and son was standing before Yudhisthir. Folding hands, he greeted them all and said,

"Forgive me Yuvraj, the palace is still not ready to reside in. Due to some problems the work got delayed. But I've arranged a mansion for you to live in. The palace will be ready soon. I assure you."

"We already arrived later than expected and now you're telling us it's still not ready." Bheem said with annoyance. Yudhisthir told him to cool down and ordered Purochan to finish the work soon. They were led to a huge mansion then.

Days passed.

Drisana's health got better. Her head injury was completely healed. She roamed around the village often now. One of the brothers always seemed to follow her, Nakul more than the rest. He tried to help her understand their language by pointing at different things and making gestures. The progress was slow. She was trying to figure out a way to go back to her place. Once she tried to find her way back to some town or highway or anything that could lead her back to civilization and ended up getting lost in the forest. Thankfully Nakul was following her and brought her back when she relented after tiring.

She wasn't much surprised at their backward ways as there were many tribes around the world that chose to forego the modern utilities and live a simple life. But wearing crowns and jewelleries made of gold while leading a simple life and ordering others around like they were servants, was surprising. One more thing she noticed that only the family she was living with wore so much gold and were treated like superiors by others. People bowed and respected them like they were royalties. Drisana thought maybe they were the chief of the village.

Her sweet ignorance got shattered on the 5th day of their stay in Varanavat. She was out on the forest area with Nakul. The guy seemed facinated with some bushes and were collecting some herbs. She was wandering close-by when she heard someone call her. She turned around to see a man similarly dressed like those brothers, with golden jewellery, golden crown and a peacock feather attached to the crown.

"How have you been Drisana?" He asked with a smile on face. Drisana was astonished hearing him as he was talking in her own language.

"I...I'm ok I guess. But who are you?" She asked staring at the man.

"I'm who you want me to be. If you're talking about name then you can call me anything. It just needs to come from your heart and I'll respond." he said.

"I would appreciate a direct answer rather than riddles and also how do you know my tongue?" Drisana asked crossing her arms on her chest.

"Because to talk you don't need to understand language, you only need to read the heart." He said with a bigger smile.

'Okay. So no one here understands me and who does likes to talk rubbish. Great.' Drisana thought with irritation though her face remained neutral not betraying her thoughts.

The man chuckled and said, "Quite impatient, aren't you?"

"Will you answer my question?"

"I have. Every questions answer lies within the question itself. People call me whatever they want and there's nothing out of my knowledge."

Drisana remained quiet watching him only.

"Fine. You can call me bhrata Krishna." He said finally.

"Oh, another character! So what am I supposed to play? Subhadra or Draupadi?" Drisana said in sarcasm being annoyed.

Krishna gave a laugh and said, "Nehi behna, yoh sab to etihas ka hissa hain or tumhe to etihas rachna hain.

(No sister, they are part of the history but you have to create the history.)"

"Can you please talk normally?"

"Okay, tell me where are you?"

"Isn't that the question of the year? I'm trying to figure out where the hell I am since the past 13 days."

Krishna gave a half smile and said, "You're in Dwapar yug behna (sister). You've come 5157 years back in time."

Drisana stilled and looked at him with wide eyes. Just her luck. The only person she met in the past 13 days who knew her language was a .

Krishna gave another chuckle and said, "I'm telling you the truth and I'm not a crackpot. For the past 13 days you've been in Dwapar yug. You came here through the energy portal that opened in your parental houses' basement. Those strange men and the lady, they really are Pandavas and their mother, Kunti. The same one you've read about in Kaliyug."

Drisana gulped being nervous now. Doubt was creeping inside her. But pushing it aside she asked calmly,

"Really? That means you're the mortal disguise of Lord Narayan? Ok. Show me some proof like giving me the ability to understand these peoples' language or sending me back home then."

"My sister has asked for something for the first time. How can I deny? You'll be able to understand and speak every language that exists in this time period. As for your second wish, I'm afraid that cannot be arranged sister. You're exactly where you should be."

Drisana was panicking inside. She had always relayed on her instincts. This man with his serene smile and calm aura was speaking the truth according to her gut instict and the last 13 days also indicated towards it. But it wasn't possible, right? Science has developed much, but they still haven't figured out a way to time-travel. She couldn't really possibly in Dwapar yug.

And if it was then why? How? What??? Before she could say something, Nakul came there calling her. He looked at the supposed Krishna and said,

"Vasudev, you're here? Parnipat. When have you come here? I wasn't aware that you're coming. Bhrata Arjun also didn't say anything."

"Parnipat. I just reached here Rajkumar Nakul. I was passing by when I heard you're staying here in Varanavat. So I thought to meet bua (aunt) and you all." Said Krishna to Nakul and Drisana was astonished as she could understand them perfectly.

Sanskrit.

Yes, the age old language. How she had been so stupid not to recognise the language? No. She couldn't read or write sanskrit. But her mother used to read the old puran and all the other religious stuffs that were in this language. Their was a ring to this language. She used to pay attention as a child but as she got older, she never had been the religious type, thus forgetting the old script that facinated her once.

Nakul said they should get back to the house now when he noticed Drisana standing there staring at Krishna with wide eyes. He said, "Vasudev this is-"

"Drisana." Krishna completed before him.

"You know her?" Nakul asked looking between them.

"How can I not know my behna?" Krishna answered with a smile again.

'Why was he smiling so much?' Drisana thought being annoyed.

"She's your sister!? I knew you have only one sister, Rajkumari Subhadra." Nakul asked in shock.

"Yes, Drisana has been my sister since the moment I met her." Krishna said with a smile. While Drisana was watching aghast. She also noticed the wordplay he was pulling with Nakul. Not really lying, but not saying the truth either.

"Oh, but how come she doesn't know our tongue?" Nakul asked. Krishna looked at Drisana then again at Nakul and said,

"You want to know everything standing here only Rajkumar Nakul? Let's return to your residence. We'll meet everyone and also talk."

"Uchit hain. (That's right)."

"Okay then, you start heading towards there. We brother-sister duo will follow you."

Nakul gave a slight smile and started heading back.

Krishna looked towards Drisana who seemed to be in a spell. He called her thrice before reality crushed into her.

"Whoa? How? Why? When? Now?" Drisana didn't know what to ask first.

"Calm down behna. You'll get all your answers. Be patient. How? I've already told you that. Why? That is something you'll know with time. When? You yourself said that. 13 days before. Now? We should follow Rajkumar Nakul." Saying so he started following the path Nakul had gone. Drisana waited a moment before starting behind him. She was trying hard not to lose it. She took some deep breaths to calm herself and then said,

"If what you're saying is true then send me back to my time. Please." Added the last bit thinking, she should be polite to the incarnation of a god, right? Krishna chuckled again and said,

"If? You still have doubts. That is not possible behna. You've reached exactly where you should be. "

"But why? And I don't belong here. I need to go back to my time. I have a life there." Drisana tried to make him understand. If what he said was true, she needed to get out of here as soon as possible.

"What life you have there Drisana? Tell me about it."

"Well, I....I....I have-" Drisana tried a few times and thought what was there for her. She had no one. No parents, no relatives, even her friends were few and lost contact when she decided to travel alone. In past years, none had contacted her without a reason just to ask how she had been. When her parents had been alive, she had someone to come back from tours. Her parents had never stopped her from touring and as there had been more than enough money in their accounts, she was never pressurised to pursue a career. It was only a bonus that she earned money through writing travel blogs and selling pictures. But she recently got tired by that too. Lone days, empty life, roaming without any goal or destination, that was what her life had become. There was not a single thing important or interesting that she could return to. But that didn't mean she wouldn't, right?

"What life I have or not there isn't important. What is important, is the fact that I've landed in this time period accidentally and I've no place here." She replied finally.

"Sometimes accidents are good, aren't they? And how you're sure that it was an accident behna?"

"Isn't every humans destiny predecided? How I fit in here when it has already happened? My destiny is not here."

Krishna stopped walking and looked into her eyes with a serious expression. After few moments, he said with a half smile,

"Kuch manusya apna vagya khud cunte hai behna. Aur usa badalne ki takat bhi rakhte hain. Tumhare vagya mein kya hoga, yeh tum soyam cunogi.

(Some people chooses their own destiny sister. And they also hold power to change it. What will be in your destiny, you will only choose that.)"
