《Changing The Course of Fate》Chapter 9 - Prodigy?

The following day, Pier was on the training grounds of the Central Mansion along with the instructor his father has hired. The woman who was about in her mid-thirties had brown hair and brown eyes. The typical color that is common within the kingdom.
"Young Master, the first thing that we need to learn is the basics about magic." The woman named Liza told him. Pier nodded his head nonetheless even though he already had a clue in his mind about what she was going to tell him.
"Our body is infused with mana. Most of us are blessed with the capacity to hold mana and through using mana we can create the type of magic that we want." Liza looked at the young master who was looking at her intently. She liked how the young master was listening to her words intently as if he were a child seeing something interesting for the first time. 'Even though it seems like he already knew most of the basics.'
"By managing the mana around our body and concentrating it into a single force, we can create the type of magic that we want." She opened her hand and said a short chant before a water ball formed in her hand.
"Take this for an example, young master. This is one of the most basic types of magic." The ball of water was dark blue.
"By concentrating your thoughts and mana, you will be able to do the same within a few weeks at most!" She proudly said. All of the students she had taught, especially the talented ones were able to produce a magic ball within a week.
"A week?" Pier asked Liza as he stared at the blue water ball that was bobbing up and down her palms.
"Yes, young master. It would usually take a week for beginners to manifest the mana around their body and control it even to a certain extent." Mana was a complicated yet easy thing to handle. One simply had to find it within his own body and make use of it properly.
"Even the most talented mage in the kingdom himself, an exceptional individual was able to control his mana properly and produce a magic ball within five days!" She was reminiscing the time she taught the young mage who was very talented in magic and was now one of the highest-tiered mages in the kingdom.
Pier shifted his gaze from the water ball into his hands.
"By my commandment, heed my call and grant my wishes." He concentrated a little bit and gusts of wind started encircling his palm. He woke up earlier than usual today after sleeping soundly and immediately went into practicing the magic he learned yesterday.
"Something like this?" Pier said as he raised his palm to Liza's eye level. Liza gaped at the hand of the young master she was teaching. There was a small orb of wind that was producing light gusts.

"Y-Young master!" She gasped in shock. She scrambled and immediately went to grab Pier's hands. The action made Pier shocked and the small orb of wind disappeared.
Her mouth was open as she stared at the now empty palms of Pier.
"Young master, how on Earth-" she was astounded, to say the least. Based on what the headmaster had said, his son never took any interest in magic and had abruptly said that he wanted to learn one night.
She was prepared to teach and guide this young master but Pier had already exceeded her expectations.
"C-Can you do that again, young master?" Liza said as she let go of Pier's hands and took a step back. She did not expect that the person in front of him would be able to easily create a magic ball in an instant. She only met him for an hour at most!
Pier opened his palm again and concentrated a little bit.
"By my commandment, heed my call and grant my wishes." he grimaced at the chant. It did not suit his taste that he had to chant first before producing magic. He should ask Liza if there are any ways to produce magic without chanting.
The small orb that disappeared from his hand a minute ago was now back in his palm. The orb produced small gusts of wind as it bobbed up and down his palm as well.
Liza was shocked - no, to be shocked was an understatement. She was surprised to the extent of stopping her breath midway after seeing Pier cast magic.
"M-May I ask, young master how long were you studying magic?" She said as she stuttered a little bit. It was her first time seeing a student of hers produce a magic ball immediately within an hour they have met.
"Oh, after going to the king's palace yesterday I immediately went into the library located between the central and southern area to read books, that's when I first learned the basics about magic," he said as he opened another palm and formed another small wind orb in it.
Liza had millions of thoughts running in her head. How on Earth did this infamous young master who never took any interest in magic do this? and in a day at that!?
"Impossible-" Liza covered her mouth while still staring at the two wind orbs that were floating in Pier's palms
"It's not impossible. I just followed the instructions that were written in the books there." he smiled a little bit. At first, Pier had a hard time following the instructions written in the book. It took him two hours and beads of sweat were already rolling down his forehead while practicing to create a magic orb.
After his battle with his concentration for two hours, he felt as if he was refreshed after producing his first wind orb. He hypothesized it was him controlling his mana that was embedded deep within his body.

Liza was still in awe after hearing Pier's response.
'To produce a magic orb, I have seen my students suffer for days before controlling even a little bit of mana inside their bodies and producing a magic orb!' but the person in front of her did it even without a hint of struggle
'The first element to even come out was the wind!' The wind was not a common element to first manifest in an individual who's still starting to learn magic. Controlling wind would be one of the hardest elements to practice!
'Is he perhaps... a prodigy?' Liza was starting to get overwhelmed once more. It had merely been an hour and she was already bombarded with countless surprises.
A magic prodigy is someone who rarely comes by. They are considered to be treasures of a kingdom.
'The last prodigy to be known in the kingdom was ... the headmaster!" Liza started putting the pieces together. She thought that maybe because Pier's father was a magic prodigy when he was young, his son must have inherited his abilities.
'What a scary and talented household...' A house full of talented individuals using magic was a force to be reckoned with. The Lumiere household was a family of swordsmen while the Belmiunde household was a family of magicians.
"This... This is great, young master! As expected of the honorable Belmiunde household!" Pier flinched at the statement but did not bother answering back.
'What does she mean with expected of a member of the Belmiunde household?' Sure, it was Pier's body that he was using but it was Eliam's knowledge, understanding, and patience with what he read that made him do it within a day.
"May I ask, young master what are the other elements that you can create an orb with?" She was excited to teach a prodigy. It was one of the times when she felt she would soon find out the results of her long-awaited research in magic.
"I could only produce this wind orb for now but I am still unable to produce another element," he spoke begrudgingly. It was a lie – well, a partial lie. After waking up, he tried creating a ball of fire in his hands and successfully created another but couldn't maintain it for long. However, based on Liza's reactions, he seems to have already dug his grave. He did know that wind orbs are rare sightings in a starting magician but he did not expect his instructor's reaction to be like this.
He already had a hunch that if he showed the ball of fire that he can create, his name would be spread throughout the empire as that of a genius or something. He did not want any more attention. He still had to resolve the original Pier's problems.
Liza felt sort of disappointed but was still excited.
"I see. Young master, I am pretty sure that you know creating wind orbs is one of the hardest challenges for beginner magicians but you have done it easily. Right now, I can assume that young master Pier is a very talented individual in using magic. However, fear not young master. You will soon be able to manifest two elements in your control after months of training!" She smiled wider at the thought of teaching Pier for months.
'I need to report this to the headmaster as well' Liza was - to say - an admirer of the headmaster's control for magic. He was known as a prodigy who was able to cast attack spells the moment, he reached his second month in magic training.
And now that a person who had so much potential similar to Ronnovian Belmiunde has shown himself, maybe this is a chance for her to learn how these monsters in the field of magic grow and excel.
--
"A prodigy?" Ronnovian asked Liza.
"Yes, headmaster. I believe young master Pier is a prodigy" Ronnovian's thoughts were in disarray.
"You said that Pier could produce a wind orb even though he had just been studying magic for a day." He scoffed at the thought. There was no way Pier could have done that. It's not a matter of him suddenly getting better at controlling magic but he couldn't do it in the first place.
"Yes, headmaster. I have witnessed it myself. The wind orb that was in young master Pier's palms was his creation as I could not feel other presences besides the young master himself in the area," She affirmed with resolution. The man sitting on the desk with piles of papers in his hand thought otherwise.
"The kid had probably done something. Continue observing him more," he commanded Liz. Liz felt uncomfortable at the reaction the headmaster had shown.
'Should not the headmaster be filled with joy as another prodigy will have been discovered in their family?' It was a very uncommon reaction. Even the king would probably hold a feast for everyone in the kingdom if he finds out that one of his children is discovered as a prodigy in a certain field.
'Yet the headmaster looked like he was about to destroy the whole place.'
