《All At Once》The sound of our future.

After coach blew the whistle to end practice I rushed into the locker room and checked the time on my phone.
2:33
I let out a string of curse words under my breath while running to the showers to freshen up.
I'm supposed to meet Harper at the doctors office at three, and I really don't want to be late.
After I finished my shower in record time, I quickly threw on underwear, and on top a pair of grey adidas sweatpants and a navy adidas t-shirt paired up with white adidas tennis shoes.
I rolled my eyes.
Totally not sponsored.
After I was done getting dressed I checked the time on my phone and saw that I still had about twenty minutes left to get there.
I rushed out of the locker room whilst my teammates gave me curious glances.
I hadn't told them about the baby yet. I don't really know how to if I'm being honest.
"Hey, remember Harper, that girl I went home with six weeks ago? Yeah well, we didn't use protection, so now she's knocked up."
Yeah no.
I guess when the time comes I'll tell them.
But for now I'm going five over the speed limit to get to the doctor's office but at the same time I'm not trying to end up in an accident.
When I make it to the hospital, I pull up just in time to see Harper walking up to the entrance.
I hurry and park my car in the closest spot I can find. When I'm finally parked I rush out of the car and meet Harper just as she was about to open the door.
She looked up at me with that breathtaking smile of hers. In return I give her my most genuine, sincere smile.
We then enter, no words needing to be exchanged. I loved how easy it was between us.
I looked down at her once more. "You look beautiful," I said, not dropping eye contact.
She blushed, tucking a piece of her chocolate brown hair behind her ear.
"Thank you," she said still looking down at the tiled floor.
We then made our way to the waiting room after checking in at the nurses station.
We sat there in comfortable silence. I could see Harper twiddling her fingers in her lap, a sure sign she was nervous.

Not thinking, I placed my hand over hers, interlacing our fingers together. Harper looked up at me, giving me a small smile, showing her gratitude.
I began rubbing small circles against the back of her hand with the pad of my thumb. She let out a sigh and without warning she leaned her head against my shoulder. At first I tensed up, but immediately relaxed into her touch.
"Are you nervous?" she asked me quietly.
"Yes," I replied. In truth I was terrified. I know there's no reason to be. It's not as if she was giving birth, or we were finding out the gender. Wait. We weren't finding out the gender were we?
"Hey Harper?" She hummed in response.
"We aren't finding out the gender are we?" I asked with a hint of worry.
Harper let out a soft chuckled. I was glad I could distract her for a moment.
"No it's too soon to find out the gender."
I let out a long sigh. Finding out the gender would be too overwhelming for me right now.
Suddenly the door opened and a women dressed in purple scrubs appeared.
"Harper Riley."
Immediately both Harper and myself stand up. I gesture for Harper to go first, then I follow behind.
Before we are brought back into the room they take Harper's height and weight.
Once the nurse has all of measurements needed she escorts Harper and I to a small room.
"Harper if you would like you can go ahead and change into the gown laying on the table, leave the front open," the nurse said gesturing towards the table.
Harper gave her a nod and the nurse promptly left. Once the nurse exited the room I started to follow to give Harper privacy to change, but she stopped me.
"You don't have to leave you know," she said sheepishly. "I mean I am having have your baby, so you're gonna have to see it all at some point," she chuckled.
I chuckled along with her, but my heart was beating a mile a minute.
I sat down in the chair across from the table. She started unbottoning her shirt, but once I got a glimpse of her lacey, baby blue bra, I had to duck my head in fear of losing my self control.

When I heard her sit down on the table I looked back up to find her laying down with the gown covering most of her body, but a small sliver of skin was showing on her stomach where the gown was opened.
Not a minute passed of us sitting there in comfortable silence, the door opened and I walked a young, male, doctor.
Though Harper didn't looked affected in the slightest.
"Hello I'm Dr. Blake, I'm going to be giving you your ultrasound today," he said with a bright smile.
Harper sat up and extended her hand to shake his. "Harper," she said with a curt nod.
I stood up, being just slightly taller than him with my 6'3 height, and shook his hand. "Myles," I said in the same tone as Harper.
He then sat down on the stool and rolled himself over to where he was right next to Harper.
"Harper have you been having any type of discomfort or tenderness in your stomach?"
Harper shook her head no.
"I'm going to apply some pressure on different areas of your stomach," he said still looking at her.
She nodded her head once more. I could tell she was still nervous by her lack of conversation. I've come to notice she doesn't speak as much when she's nervous.
The doctor peeled away the edges of her gown to where he could see her entire stomach.
My jaw clenched slightly when he started touching her with the tips of his fingers, applying different amounts of pressure.
When I looked over to Harper, her face held a blank expression. Any other doctor could touch her and I would be fine, but this doctor was very young, very male, and I guess he was somewhat attractive.
When Harper turned her head and saw my clenched jaw and slightly fisted hands she gave me a small reassuring smile.
She looked in thought for a minute, then she lifted her hand and gestured for me to stand beside where her head was laying.
Without hesitation I took three long strides over to her side. When I got there she gave me that beautiful smile that constantly adorned her face and took my hand in hers, squeezing it slightly.
This act alone made me smile at her.
When the doctor had finished he pulled out the ultrasound machine and squirted a large amount of a blue jelly substance onto her stomach.
When he applied the small probe against her skin Harper let out a small gasp from the coldness of it. I gently squeezed her hand to let her know that I was there.
The doctor continued to move the probe around on Harper's stomach as he watched the screen.
Suddenly he stopped.
"There's your baby."
Both Harper and I looked at the screen. You couldn't tell it was a baby because of how small it was, but it was still one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
I smiled.
"I made that," I stated proudly.
Harper let out a loud laugh.
"Excuse you, we made that," she said emphasizing we.
"Sure babe, but we both know I did most of the work," I said with a smirk sending her a wink.
Her face turned a slight shade of pink, and she mumbled I few choice words under her breath.
The doctor then cleared his throat, looking at us with a sheepish expression.
"Would you guys like to hear the heartbeat?"
At the same time Harper and I looked at each other, then back at the doctor nodding aggressively.
He chuckled, then pressed something on the machine.
Moments later we heard the sound of the baby's heart beating wildly. We just sat there listening to the sound of the heartbeat, and I swear I felt a tear slide down my cheek.
This isn't how I imagined starting a family, but I'm starting to think it may be so much better than what I ever imagined it could be.
I heard a faint sniffle and I looked down to see Harper with small tears running down her face.
I leaned down and gave her a lingering peck on her forehead. She closed her eyes as if savoring the moment, letting out a small, joyful laugh.
And we sat there and listened to our baby's heartbeat, we sat there and listened to the sound of our future.
Hopefully one together.
