《Dancing In The Dark ✓》the bathroom

I step out of the cubicle in the Nando's to see Laura Richards of all people washing her hands. I freeze for a split second when I see her. The urge to punch her so hard her fake tan fades is strong, as is the urge to just kick her in her fake blonde head and rip her false nails off. God, I've become violent.

"Oh, hey, Eve," she greets, reaching into her pocket for a lipgloss. "How are you?"

I shrug, squeezing soap onto my hand. "Fine. You?"

She shrugs too. "Fine. Sucks about Josh, right? I mean, sixteen is so fucking young."

"Yeah, no shit," I say.

In my book, someone saying no shit in a sharp tone is basically equivalent to please quit talking, like now. But Laura doesn't. She applies a coat of shimmery pink gloss on her lips and then turns to fluff her hair up.

"I saw him that day. He didn't seem like he was dyin'."

"He wasn't dying," I correct. "He died when he fell."

"That psycho Eden did it, right?" She's still staring at herself in the mirror. "Wish I could go back to that day and just stop her walking up to him."

"Excuse me?" I'm barely containing my rage at her. "What do you mean?"

She shrugs again. "We met up in that shitty park- Stockland River or something. Then Hallie called me to cover her shift at the cafe, so I had to go. I saw Eden walking up to him. That's it. Why?"

I manage a smile. "Just wondering."

It's like she doesn't even realise who I am. Josh's ex-girlfriend. The same girl who she took joy in making feel so fucking insecure during early autumn by sucking up to Josh. It's like she doesn't remember that while she might've gotten him if he hadn't died, I had him first. And isn't there that thing where you never really get over your first love?

"I need to go," I tell her. "My stepdad's waiting. Good luck on Monday."

She smiles. It's sickly sweet. "See ya, Eve. Good luck to you too."

Thank God she didn't try to hug me or anything. She's pulled out her phone now and is busy tapping away with those ridiculous false nails of hers. I barely restrain the urge to rip the awful things off her fingers.

Dave is waiting at our table. "Ready?"

"Yeah." I manage another smile. "Let's go."
