《Dancing In The Dark ✓》the white lie

I go into the police station again. Diane and Mitch meet me in one of those cold interview rooms, faces serious.

"I'm not in trouble, am I?" I ask.

"Completely out of trouble." Mitch attempts a smile. He doesn't really like me much. It's that or that's just how his face is. "We checked all the CCTV and you're not on it."

"Now we just need to know who else you told about this... deal you had with Eden Davis," Diane adds.

I want to tell her my gut instinct answer. Why the hell would I tell anyone about conspiring to kill my ex-boyfriend with the loner freak herself? But I refrain.

"You guys. My mom and stepdad. Eden knows. That's it."

They turn to confer as quietly as possible. When they turn back, Mitch clears his throat before speaking.

"Are you aware of Eden telling anyone?"

"Her sister knows. You know Erin, right? Blue hair?"

"We know Erin." The words Diane didn't say hang in the air. The one who had the affair with Granger.

"And that's it. I didn't think any of it so I didn't tell my friends. My parents didn't even know until everything happened this week."

I dig my nails deep into my palms. Jenny knew. Eden told her. But Jenny couldn't have killed Granger. Her parents wouldn't have let her go into school and where else would she have managed to do it? And she wasn't in school when she called Eden at eleven. She didn't do it. There's no reason to stress out her and her parents even more. It's just a little white lie to protect some grieving people's feelings and mental stability.

"There was a high level of pain killers in Mr Granger's bloodstream," Diane informs me. "And since you weren't seen at the chemist or anything and the painkillers at your house are all there, you've been ruled out. We're looking into that, so you can't tell anyone."

I breathe a sigh of relief. "Thank you so much."

They let me go eventually, warning me not to get mixed up with anything else and to actually tell someone if anybody tries to make a murder deal with me again, no matter how jokey it may be at the beginning. And the first thing I do when I'm outside is text Jenny.

hey, how are you doing?

She doesn't reply straight away. It's still mid-morning, so there's a high chance she'll be asleep. I don't even know why I'm so worried? It's Jenny for fuck's sake, she won't have done anything reckless. Despite being a claw clip on blazer girl, she's actually pretty chill. Well thought out. Not the kind of girl to go kill someone.

But who would kill Granger? Who would even get close enough to kill Granger and have the motive to do so? There's Erin but I'm pretty sure all she wants to do is forget about Granger and move on with her life. The painkillers might mean suicide.

"Everything alright?" Dave asks as I get into the car.

I fasten my seatbelt. "I'm fine. They aren't looking at me as a suspect anymore."

Dave exhales. "Finally. You can focus on your exams now. Your mom went to Gaelle's house with Alfie for a play date. What should we do for lunch?"

As Dave drives out of the police station car park, I can't help but feel the white lie I told growing. But that lie isn't really that bad, right? I did the right thing.

I did the right thing.

Did I do the right thing?
