"Oh, um. I'm Kim Taehyung, one of your soulmates."
Your eyes widened, realising why he had looked familiar. "Oh, um, hi," you said, not knowing what to say, and you suddenly felt nervous.
Taehyung chuckled. "Don't feel too anxious. I'm just as nervous as you are," he admitted, scratching the back of his head.
You only nodded. "So um, what are you doing in here? I'm here almost every evening, and I've never seen you in here." He asked, starting a conversation.
"Oh, normally, I'm in here in the morning or the afternoon. Or I'm in the art hall sculptors are using for their sculptures. But tonight, I decided to sketch some of the props in this room." You told him, gesturing to the fake flower you were drawing.
"May I ask why you're always in here in the evenings?" She asked. "Well, I come here to sketch or take photos," Taehyung lifted his camera. "During the day, I'm in the computer room, coding or stuff like that, and at night, the artist side of me comes out. Today I'm here to take photos. I like taking photos at night. I think they come out cooler compared to the ones that I take during the day."
"Can I see some of the pictures you took?" "Of course, but only if you'll show me some of your drawings."
You made space on the bench, allowing Taehyung to slide in and take a seat next to you. You dug in your back and pulled out a file of your drawing, handing them to him.
Taehyung dug in his bag as well, pulling out a file and handing them to you as well. "These are the ones I've edited and printed. Some of them are unedited because I took them on a polaroid camera." He explained as you opened the file.

"So, do you own a lot of cameras?" You asked as you traced your fingers over the pictures. "Yeah, I have a few," he said.
"Oh my gosh, Jungkook looks so cute here," you said, looking at the polaroid picture of Jungkook. He had a big smile on his face, and he was holding two other polaroid photos in his hand.
"I know, right. I took it on his 21st birthday." You traced your fingers over the picture. "Can you take some pictures of me with your polaroid camera?" You asked, looking at Taehyung.
He smiled and reached into his backpack. "Yeah, I can take some right now. I brought it with me," he pulled out the white camera and smiled.
You happily clapped your hands, and Taehyung let out a laugh as you began to strike poses for the camera, making funny faces.
He began to take pictures, each slot eventually falling out of the slot of polaroid. Taehyung stopped taking photos because all he could do was laugh. Your poses and the faces you were making entertained him.
Even though he hadn't initiated a spark between you two, he already felt complete. A warm feeling grew in his chest, and tears from all the laughing fell from his eyes. He felt so happy.
You eventually stopped posing and began to laugh with him. "Hey, you're supposed to be taking pictures, not laughing," you whined, and he shook his head, clutching his stomach. "I can't help it! The faces you're making are funny," he said in between his laughs.
You playfully rolled your eyes and picked up the camera from his lap, holding it and focusing it on Taehyung. "Taehyung, smile~" you sang. "Wait, what?"
The sound of the camera clicking caught Taehyung by surprise. "Hey!" He whined, realising you had taken a picture of him. You stuck out your tongue as you waited for the photo to come out.

You gently pulled up and bought it up to face. Once the picture had cleared up, you burst out laughing. "What's so funny?" He mumbled, taking the photo from your hands. "You look so confused. It's literally so cute," you said once your laughter died down.
"I want to cherish today," you said, picking up your phone and removing the clear case. "Can I have the picture, please?" Taehyung placed the photo of himself in your hand and watched as you put it on the back of the phone.
"What are you doing?" "Putting you in my phone case, silly. What else would I be doing?" You placed the case back on, securing the position of the picture.
"Look, now whenever I look at the back of my phone, I'm gonna see you," you said, showing him your phone case.
Taehyung couldn't hide the smile that was growing on his face. He took the phone out of your hand and laced his fingers with yours. Then you felt it, the spark. The same you had between your other soulmates, sealing the bond between you two.
"I'm so glad you're one of my soulmates," he said, looking into your eyes. You softly smiled and tightened your hold on his hand. "Me too."
.
The two of you were on the bus, holding each other's hands, your head resting on his shoulder. Your eyes were closed as you listened to your music, softly humming along to the tune. You ran your thumb over the back of your phone with your free hand, over the picture of Taehyung.
Taehyung kept alternating his gaze from your phone to the back of his. His phone case was clear like yours, and he had a few polaroid pictures of you. 'Should I do the same?' he asked himself. He wanted to. Taehyung wanted to be able to see your picture whenever he picked up his phone too.
He decided he'd do it, but only when you got off the bus at your stop. He'd pick his favourite and put it on the back of the phone case before he got home. He wasn't going to tell his soulmates he met you. He wanted them to figure it out by looking at his phone.
The sudden voice announcing your stop snapped Taehyung out of his thoughts. "y/n," he whispered, gently shaking his shoulder to get your attention.
"Yeah?" you asked, taking out one of the earbuds. "It's your stop," you looked out the window with wide eyes. "Oh, thanks." You slipped your hand out of his to collect your bags, already missing the feeling of his warm hand.
"It was nice officially meeting you, Taehyung," you said, giving him a small smile. "It was nice meeting you too, y/n."
You quickly pecked his cheek before getting up from your seat and pressing the stop button.
As you walked to the door, the bus slowly began to stop at the bus stop.
You turned to wave at Taehyung before walking out of the open doors, leaving the boy with a shy smile on his face and pink cheeks.

ELIOT NESS FOR MAYOR is a short novel of magical-realist fiction, a stand-alone book in the Shantytown Cycle. Written for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), I will be posting revisions as I complete them and should be done by early 2022, though I am making major changes so the timing may be longer. This book is cross-posted on two websites: Wattpad and Royal Road. Both are reputable, high-quality sites. Do not trust this book on other websites. They "scrape" material from reputable sites, posting the stolen material as an original to lure users in, but contain links that include malicious code.
