《Accidentally Knocked Up》11

Dinner with Darren was a mess. How much of a mess? It has been two months since I've last seen him kind of a mess. I couldn't believe he had the audacity to ask me if the child was really his. I reached across the table slapped him as hard as I could and demanded he leaves my apartment. If I had another job lined up I would have quit the next day. That doesn't mean I haven't been looking elsewhere. Did I mention I also was transferred to another department? I'm now working with Mr. Kramer.

And he definitely lives up to the name The Devil Wears Suspenders. His floor was so cold and strict. Everyone on his floor was all work and no play, I don't think I could survive working in the logistics department. I don't care about the routes and shipping careers. I didn't spend my youthful years in college for this.

"Hey, Alise, how's everything going?" I look up from my cubicle to see Caroline smiling down at me.

"I miss the finance department." I groan.

"You know you can always come back." She leans closer. "Between us, I think Darren misses you."

Yeah right. If he did miss me he wouldn't have me transferred to another department—that I know absolute shit about. Also, he would actually show up to one of the doctor's appointments instead of sending Charlotte in his place. At my very first appointment, I sent him a text letting him know. On the day of the appointment, Charlotte showed up and has been showing up for all the appointments over the last two months.

"He doesn't," I tell her.

"He does. So spill what's going on between you two?"

"There is nothing going on between us." That isn't a lie.

She chuckles. "So that baby you're carrying isn't his? I mean you can lie to me—I already know the truth."

"He told you?" I ask shockingly.

"No, you just did. However, I've been Darren's assistant for a very long time. I know the damn guy more than I would like to. A lot of things started to happen once you began working here. Kenza, Tamika, and I all started to get curious about you—your name pops up every now and then with our bosses." So the executives talk about me?

"Technically, I'm your boss too," I tell her.

"Correct, but not while your own this floor." She says matter factly.

"So what brings you here then?"

"Well, you seem miserable when you walked into the building today and I was told to retrieve you and your things." She smiles at me again. "So let's get packing."

"I cant." Hell yeah, I can, but I need to finish the workload Diane gave me this morning.

"Yes, you can. This is coming from a higher power you must leave this floor and come back to the finance division now. I would say you can take this up with HR if you feel like you're being forced to do something you don't want to, but that's not going to help. This higher power trumpets everyone in this building."

"Are you talking about Mrs. Tucker?" I ask already knowing the answer. Charlotte has said she was going to put me back in the finance department, later on, this month, even if I wasn't ready to go back—she would drag me there. Saying Darren was out of his mind for doing something like this. And kept going on and on about this being a company, not croakington.

"Bingo, so let's get a move on." Caroline doesn't waste another minute and pops up a box she was holding in her hand. She moves quickly gathering my things, I roll my chair back giving her enough space. She is on a mission to get this done in a nick of time. It still amazes me how this company runs sometimes. I know there are key factors that play a huge role in every company. Yet here Charlotte Tucker seems to be the only key factor.

I got to know her more during doctor appointments and the mommy and me classes. She got to know the guys during college, by accidentally being placed in their frat house. She then went on to risk her spot at some culinary school to help them get the funding for the first hotel. After that, she put her own career on the back burner to help the guys start their dreams. Charlotte said she and the guys sacrificed a lot to get the company to where it is today.

Rumor has it Charlotte—never mind, that really isn't my place to say.

"Is this all you really have?" Caroline looks at me.

"I stay in a cubicle, I wasn't going to go crazy and make it my own. I come to work and leave." I tell her.

"Fine by me, that means you're all packed and ready to go." she takes off to the elevators. I grab my purse following behind her. I would stop by Mr. Kramer's office, but that man definitely intimidates me. According to Charlotte, he is a sweetheart along with Mr. Beckett, well Vincent Beckett. We travel four flights up and the smell of Ms. Wiilliams perfume fills my nostrils. I'm back home. Still following behind Caroline, she comes to a stop at Darren's office. "Alright, here we are. Do you mind opening the door?"

"Wait, why are we here?"

"Just open the door please." She looks down at the box in her hand. I open the door. Glancing around the room I see a second desk where Darren's couches use to be. I hope this isn't what I think it is. "Welcome to your new office," Caroline says happily and the urge to puke takes over me. I rush to the nearest trash bin, knowing I will not make it to the restroom in time. I can't possibly be sharing an office with Darren. We haven't seen each other in two months, why would he want me in here?

"Is everything okay?" I hear a concern, Darren. I look up from the trash bin, he looks like how I feel at the moment—like hell. He moves quickly towards me, gently pulling my hair back. "Is the baby okay? Are you okay?"

I went to answer and then it happened. It happened all too fast. Any sensible person would have jumped back, but no not Darren he holds his ground and I feel so bad for him. And at the same time, I don't.

"That is so fucking gross." Caroline fake vomits. "Boss, let me grab you another suit."

Darren just stares at me and I can't hold his gaze.

"I hear this is good luck." He tries to joke.

"No good luck is a bird shitting on you, not your baby mama throwing up on you," Caroline says opening what I would assume to be a closet door. She retrieves a grey suit. I stand up straight and finally apologize to him. He tells me it's okay. Caroline cleans up the mess saying she doesn't get paid enough for this and I try to help, but she shoos me away. I make a mental note to do something nice for her because no one and I mean no one should have to clean up another grown-ass person's vomit.

Darren takes off her blazer and starts to unbutton his shirt.

"Wait," I shout a little too loud.

Darren and Caroline freeze.

"Can you not do that in a bathroom?" I ask.

"Don't be shy now honey, you two saw a lot more of each other to create that baby," Caroline says going back to cleaning up.

"True, but you don't need to see it," I say wiping my mouth with the back of my hand.

Darren laughs but quickly coughs, trying to cover it up.

"Well, okay. I guess I'll excuse myself." Caroline stands up. "Didn't see you as the jealous type, but hey I would be too." She winks at me exiting the office, closing the door behind her. Darren takes that as his cue to continue, I turn around quietly giving him some privacy. I hear him chuckle once more, causing me to roll my eyes.

Now I need to get to the bottom of why I got moved into his office.
