I woke up and quickly got dressed to head to the gym, almost stumbling as I walked into the room. I was greeted with a gentle smile from Kirumi.
After glancing around the room for a brief moment, I noticed that not everyone was here.
"Welcome to our magic show! Whaddaya think? Isn't it divine!?" Angie waved to me excitedly as she walked over.
"Yeah it looks pretty promising! Didn't think it would be something like this —" I replied, looking at the stage that was set up
"Mhm mhm! Just sit tight. Once we're done preparing, we'll start right away."
"Oh, I thought you were done already?" I ask
"The star of the show needs to settle her nerves..." as Angie said that, we both looked over to Himiko. She was shaking and stuttering like crazy. It sorta reminded me of... how I used to be when I needed to preform alone..
"Hey Himiko!" I waved, catching the girls attention as I walked over to her. She said nothing and just continued to shake
"You're gonna be just fine! I promise. Um — if it makes you feel any better, I used to be the same way when I needed to preform for my own shows. Try to not think about it that much. Overthinking the worst possible scenarios is never good."
"I-I'm just a little nervous... C-Cuz.. the magic I'll be preforming today is the Extreme Water Magic, Underwater escape act. I-I've never successfully cast it before... it's pretty difficult, so I'm a little nervous." Himiko's voice was shaky and it was very obvious how nervous she was.
"You've never cast it before..!?"
"A-And... today...in order to raise the stakes.. there's a time limit.." she pointed to the timer that hung high up on the wall. "If I don't escape from the tank within the time limit, piranhas will be dropped in... I'll be pureed."
"Wait, piranhas are way too dangerous.." Tenko had entered the conversation
"Oh, hey tenko!" I gave her a small smile
"Heya Y/n! You've gotta agree with me, right?? Himiko has to reconsider the piranhas!"
"N-No need to worry. I'll instantly kill all the piranhas...with my magic."
"Wasn't this an escape trick...?" I questioned quietly
"Himiko...are you serious?" Tenko asked concerned. Himiko went quiet for a couple of seconds
"There's...no way I can stop now. Since Atua's watching the show and all."
"Don't tell me.. you believe in that stuff too..!?" I asked
"Angie brainwashed her!" Tenko shouted
"You don't believe in my magic?"
"...no, it's not that.. but anyways.. Himiko, you're not forced to do this so if you really don't want to, you should tell Angie. I'm sure she will understand. If you do end up going through with doing this, I believe in you! You've got this." I tried to reassure her

"You're right. I can do it.. I'm a skilled young girl... I'm a mage..." she smiled at us before she headed up to the water tank. I looked over to Tenko who looked seriously worried and on the verge of tears.
"She'll be okay! Try not to worry so much" I hugged Tenko and she quickly hugged back.
"Let's get the show started!" Angie's voice echoed throughout the gym and everyone's attention shifted over to Himiko, who was already standing in place. "Thank you, Atua, for being with us today."
"Boo! Boooooo!!! You're supposed to thank us first!" Tenko shouted, her comment made me laugh a bit however Angie just ignored it
"Nyahahaha! I present to you the mysterious, the miraculous, The Amazing Himiko! If you would please turn your attention to the water tank in front of you! When the timer above the stage starts, Himiko will enter the water tank. Once she's in the tank, her assistant—me!—will draw the curtain in front of the tank. After 60 seconds have passed on the timer.. A separate, suspended tank will open and drop in a school of piranhas! Oh my goodness! After the piranhas have fallen, and the curtain is opened..if, by some miracle, Himiko has been gobbled up, please give a big round of applause!" Angie explained. ".. juuuust kidding! It's a joke!
Some of the others began to worry for Himiko because of how nervous she was. Although I didn't like her that much, I believed she could do it. That's why she's an ultimate, right?
"Nyeeh.. well then, let's begin... the Amazing Himiko's Magic Show!" Himiko announced and started the timer. Ignoring her nervousness, she dove into the water tank.
"Okay! I'm closing the curtain!" Angie did as she said while everyone waited. All intensely staring at the curtains.
"Himiko still isn't out.. D-Do you think she's alright?" Tenko asked after a couple of seconds passed. Some others asked similar questions
"...yeah.." I respond, a bit unsure of my own answer
"G-Gonta can't take it anymore!" Gonta got up and quickly ran up onto the stage
"Aw, you can't do that! We're still in the middle of the show!" Angie yelled
"But.. if Gonta do nothing, Himiko get eaten by piranhas—"
"Uhh, there's less than 10 seconds left.." i said
"I don't care if it ruins the trick, just come out! This stress is bad for my heart!" Tsumugi panicked
"Himikoooooo!" Tenko yelled, and right when she did, the timer hit zero and the buzzer went off..
The piranhas were dropped into the tank Himiko was in. In panic, everyone rushed towards the tank.
"Hurry! The curtains! Open the curtains already!" Tenko yelled, and Angie opened the curtains. But what we saw..was definitely not something we were expecting.

Ryoma's body, in the tank with the piranhas. They swirled around him and soon, he became nothing but bones. The water turned a bright pink and everyone was too shocked to even speak.
"Behold! The magnificent Underwater Esca—" Himiko came out with a bright smile on her face, unaware of what just happened. Monokuma's announcement interrupted her
"A body has been discovered! Everyone, please gather in the gym!"
"Nyeh? A body...? In the gym?" Her confusion came to an end when she turned around to see the blood filled water tank.
——
Kaito, Kokichi and Maki all came running to the gym.
"What's going on!?" Kaito questioned
"Well... you heard a body discovery announcement. Take a wild guess on what happened." I say sarcastically
"We should break the tank, right? We gotta check what's inside and It'll take too long to drain it by hand." Kokichi suggested
"But what would we use to break—"
"Gonta! Kee-boy! You're up!" Kokichi shouted
"Huh? What do you mean, we're up?" Keebo panicked
"Gonta, throw Kee-boy as hard as you can! Use that robot like a battering ram!" Kokichi ordered
"Gonta throw Keebo! Got it!"
"Then, I'll help too!" Tenko added
"N-Now wait just a second. You don't need to team up now!" Keebo panicked
"I don't think we should—"
Before I could even finish my sentence, Keebo was thrown harshly at the tank. Glass shattered everywhere and water rushed out.
"Throw Keebo.." I say to myself. Everyone began to clean the big mess.
"I've.. gathered Ryoma's body and belongings..in one place.." Keebo looked to the floor with a slightly sad face. He was just thrown around so..I understand why.
"He's been reduced such that he can be carried in one hand... How fleeting and fragile life is.." Korekiyo said
"Gonta put piranhas in bucket. Piranhas all got big tummies. Gonta think they full."
"I'm guessing this wasn't an accident.. so that means the killing game has started again." I add
"We...swore to each other, didn't we? We swore we'd never let the killing game start up again. So that was just a lie! You guys are liars!" Kokichi was crying. Real or fake tears? Probably fake. "All you liars, apologize to Ryoma! He believed the killing game wouldn't happen anymore!"
"Those tears of yours make you the liar right now.." I add
"Oh, figured it out already? Maaan" Kokichi pouted. Then Monokuma entered the room to give us the Monokuma File, and then left.
"Let's..start the investigation then.." I say, a bit hesitant
"I can't believe it.. One of us killed Ryoma.." Tsumugi said in disbelief
"No more.. Gonta no wanna investigate friends.. no wanna suspect friends"
"Then don't do it. I'm not going to investigate, either." Maki spoke up
"Wait what? How will you help in the class trial?—" I asked
"You'll be fine if you're short a person, and I doubt a child caregiver would be much help." Maki then left the room before anyone could tell her anything else.
"The fuck is that bitch's problem!? She's seriously not gonna investigate!?" Miu shouted angrily
"That seems.. rather irresponsible." Keebo added
"..Let's not talk behind her back, kay? Yeah her decision might be a little rude but that's her choice. I guess she assumed that there are plenty of other people to take care of it... she wasn't wrong. Anyway, we should really start the investigation now." I say, everyone nodded and began to investigate.
"You don't find it weird?" A familiar voice came up beside me.
"Hm?" I turned around to find Kokichi.
"I mean, she participated in Rantaro's investigation, why not Ryoma's? Haven't you noticed how weird Maki has been acting lately??" He said
"Oh, I guess not. But now that you mention it..that is pretty weird"
"Mhm! Anyway, you're investigating with me. Even thoughhh we don't really need to, since the culprit is pretty obvious."
"I'm guessing you're talking about Himiko..? It's natural she would be the main suspect, but I highly doubt it's her." I say
"Wow look at you, Y/n! You actually sound smart for once... buuuut you're right! She's so suspicious that it seems not suspicious. But then again, she's made herself look not suspicious, so now she's super suspicious!"
"You're making me lose braincells, wait!— are you implying that I sound dumb most of the time!?" Kokichi's response was just laughter as I rolled my eyes. I walked towards Himiko, Kokichi following beside me.
"Hey Himiko, can you tell us the trick behind the Underwater Escape Act? It could help us figure out how the culprit killed—" before I could finish my sentence, Himiko interrupted me
"That's not possible... there's no trick to the Underwater Escape. Cuz it was my magic..."
"....Himiko, in order for us to find the culprit, we need your help.." I tried to reason with her, but her answer stayed the same.
"Well, it's fine if you don't wanna tell us. I'll just find out myself. Actually, that sounds pretty fun!" Kokichi said
Right after our conversation with Himiko, Kokichi and I investigated together. And after a while, it was time for the class trial.

8 198Rooms of the Desolate
Rooms of the Desolate is a collection of short stories designed to guide the reader through the many rooms and mysteries of the bleak and greyscale labyrinth of the Desolate. The first entry, "The Forever Tower" follows an unnamed wanderer climbing an endless, colourless tower; the only world they have ever known. As they slowly ascend alongside the masses, they consider the nature of their world and look to the corridors as temptation beckons. The second entry, "Production Line", follows an engineer in a boundless factory, who encounters a product that does not wish to bow to the overseers and makes them question their belief in the truth and duties they were made to believe. Content guidelines: Current entries do not include explicit profanity, but future entries may do so, hence the presence of that tag. Some entries do include gore and violence, though not currently to particularly extreme degrees. The Desolate is exactly that: a desolate world; as such, it is bleak, downtrodden, and may deal with mental struggles. Cover art credit: Adam Borkowski on Pexels.
