[Chapter Three]
"I never thought the infamous Element knew how to laugh," Snart teased me. I shocked him with lightning which made him jump. But I still have a small smile on my face.
"You guys are good fun. This helped me forget... some problems," I say hesitantly. No, I refuse to talk about it or to even think about it.
My smile falls from my face and my normal emotionless look returns to my face. I know Leonard notices the change and he switches the subject.
"So what exactly are your powers Isabelle? If I remember correctly, all I've seen is you swinging from a tree, burn me, and then zap me," Leonard says thinking. "Every other time I've seen you, you're always fighting with knives, blades, or even your own fists and brain," Mick nods his head in agreement.
But we were close to the ship and heard fighting, so our conversation stopped and Mick sped up.
There was a giant masked man shooting at the rest of the team. Mick ran right into him with a force that sends him flying.
"We go out for one lousy drink and you guys somehow manage to pick a fight with Boba Fett," Leonard said as Mick and he pulled out their guns and started shooting the masked person.
"Maybe you will get to see my magic trick boys. Stand down and watch the show," I say with a smile as I walk up to the masked man, who's picking up his laser gun. I crack my knuckles and focus.
My violet eyes turn an extremely bright shade of purple as I focused on my powers. The masked man started shooting at me just as Rip screamed at me to get out of the way. But I absorbed the laser light that was shot at me, my powers feeding on the energy and become even more powerful than they ever been.
I closed my eyes as I momentarily decided which element I will use. Fire could distract him but his armor can protect him from it. Water could shoot him away from us. Earth can capture him. Lightning could... Then I though. Lightning is perfect.
My eyes snapped open and instead of being violet, they're a blue with flecks of white and light blue.
I put one hand out as if I'm signaling him to stop and blue electricity and lightning bolts shoot out toward the masked man. I can hear him grunting inside his suit but he's not harmed so I raise my second hand and shoot a ray of ice.
The pressure the masked man can't handle anymore so I narrow my eyes and push my hands together to the rays stop. I close my eyes once more and call water. The cyberman fell to the ground as he slowly started drowning in the water I called to flood his suit.
Since the cyberman exhausted himself after my ice and lightning attack, he wasn't able to pull off his helmet to be able to breathe. I open my eyes which are now a dark shade of navy blue and watch the cyberman fall to the ground, unconscious.
My ice power is urging me to kill him, to finish him off but using the water helped calm me so I'm able to push the water out of the cracks of his suit and return my eyes to their normal shade of violet.
"And I thought jumping off the roof was cool," Ray muttered in awe. I take a deep breath and walk back over to Leonard and Mick.

"Damn. That was awesome. Can you do fire?" Mick asked slightly excited. I nod and summon a flame. It danced in my palm and Mick came over to examine it. He reached out to touch it and it burned him slightly.
"Cool," He said and I think I just earned his respect.
"I'm glad I asked," is all that Leonard said. Rip rushed us into the Waverider to get away from the cyberman, not knowing when he'll wake up again after my attack.
"Professor Boardman has sustained severe internal injuries," Gideon stated.
"Prepare the MedBay to receive Professor Boardman and get us out of here!" Rip ordered frantically.
"Course heading?" Gideon asked.
"Anywhere but here!" Rip shouted as we entered the bridge. Carter and Kendra returned to the bridge a few moments later after settling Professor Boardman in the MedBay.
"Oh, Captain Hunter. I must inform you that our cloaking shield and aft entrance have been significantly compromised," Gideon explained.
"Yes, I can see that, Gideon. Station us in the temporal zone while I work on repairs." Rip said walking briskly over to a panel.
"Temporal zone?" I ask in slight confusion.
"Yes, it's essentially a time limbo. We can hide out there for a temporal jump would risk revealing our position." Rip explained vigorously.
"A time limbo? Astonishing." Stein grinned.
"Oh, there's something you people don't know about time travel? That's surprising, isn't it? Considering none of you have ever time traveled before. Bringing a family member from the past onto a timeship? Breaking out and carousing around the 1970s? We've barely begun, and already this is the worst, unmitigated disaster of my career!" Rip ranted before turning into a punch from Kendra.
"I see why you got the hots for that one," Mick whispered to Carter.
"My son is hurt because of you. Who attacked us?" Kendra said demanded while pushing Rip against the wall.
"Something of a long story," Rip said with a sigh.
"Better tell it fast, Rip, because it doesn't look like the lady's in a patient mood," Leonard commented slyly.
"Neither am I," Carter said walking over to Kendra's side.
Rip sighed, defeated before starting his explanation.
"His name is Chronos. He worked for the council of Time Masters. My former employers," Rip stated.
"I thought you were a Time Master," Sara questioned and I nod in agreement, mostly to piss Sara off. Mission accomplished. Sara glares at me and I can tell she wants to stab me with a knife in her pretty little boots. But she took a deep breath and turned back to Rip, making me grin. Snart notices and rolls his eyes.
"As I've expressed, time's not a linear thing. At some point, I was, in fact, a Time Master." Rip said only for Sara to punch him in the face.
"Will you people please stop hitting me?" Rip exclaimed, rubbing his already bruising jaw.
"Start telling the truth!" Sara ordered, super pissed off.
"I relinquished my position as a Time Master when I commandeered the Waverider. Chronos was clearly sent to bring me in," Rip explained.
"You lied to us." Sara accused.
"Of course I lied to you. I needed your help you all barely said yes as it was." Rip said. This is not going to end well.
"What about the Legends part?" Jax asked.
"Ooh, you lied about that too, didn't you?" Snart accused.
"I chose you all because, a hundred years from now, your lives have minimal effect on the recorded timeline. I needed your help without disturbing the history of 2166." Rip explained his true motives.

"So, we're like the opposite of legends." Jax pointed out.
"Give me one good reason why we shouldn't kill you," Rory growled.
"Ditto the arsonist," Stein said with a low tone.
"Because Gideon wouldn't listen to your commands and you'd be stuck here forever." Rip replied, giving us a pretty good reason not to kill him.
"Great, so we're not an elite team of heroes on a sanctioned mission, sent to rid the future of its most horrific bad guy. Just a collection of nobodies who time really doesn't give a damn about," Ray summarized.
"I didn't lie about the mission itself. Or the brutality and ruthlessness of Savage. Or my need for your help." Rip urged
"I don't imagine you're the kind of guy who quits his job and takes on this kind of threat for altruistic reasons, so Rip, why don't you tell us? What did Vandal Savage do to you?" I asked, my voice low and threatening.
"The Time Masters discourage marriage. They urge against procreation even more. A Time Master should be free of any person entanglements that might compromise him. But I fell in love, and we had a child. A boy. Jonas," Rip said sadly. Great. Mushy crap.
"Savage killed your family," Ray points out the obvious.
"He slaughtered my family," Rip corrected. "And thousands of other families. And the body that I swore an oath to serve turned a blind eye. They continue to turn a blind eye. I won't. The last thing that my child saw in this world was that monster's face. You can be damn well sure that when Savage dies, the last face he sees will be mine," Rip promised dramatically.
"I understand, given the circumstances, if you wish to return home. We can make the jump once the repairs are done, if and when Professor Boardman stabilizes," Rip explained sullenly. Kendra and Carter took off to check on their son.
"I think we all need a little time to consider our options," Stein said and left the room. Sara, Leonard, Mick, and Raymond started to walk toward a storage where we enter and exit and I follow.
-In A Storage Room-
I half-sit half-lay on a bunch of crates with Leonard to my right and Mick to my left. Sara leans on the wall, playing with her knife with Ray sitting on a crate to her left. Ray was working on something in his suit. I just fiddle with a ring on my finger that has a rose on it. I've had it ever since I've existed.
"Watch it!" Mick snapped at Ray when a blast went off from his suit, almost hitting the bald man.
"Sorry. Sorry." Ray apologized. He sighed and put down the piece of his suit.
"What's the point of us even giving this a second thought? Rip has already seen the future. He knows exactly what's in store for each of us. Might as well have stayed dead because the world doesn't need any of us. You're just a lost assassin," Ray said pointing to Sara.
"You're just a pair of good-for-nothing criminals," Ray said pointing to Snart and Mick.
"I can live with that," Mick said with a shrug.
"And you're..." Ray started but trailed off, not knowing exactly what to say. But Sara fills in for him, no problem.
"And you're a murderer who doesn't belong here and who doesn't give damn about anyone except yourself. You're probably overjoyed everything's all fucked up. Chaos is your middle name. You don't belong here. God knows why you're here but I know for a fact that it's not to help. Even if it was, no one on this ship is ever going to trust you, let alone be part of the same team as you. So I suggest you leave because no one wants you here."
Sara takes a step back after her rant and everyone holds their breath, waiting to see what I'll do. Ray's mouth is hanging open in shock, Leonard's face is mainly emotionless but I detect a hint of pity. And Mick is just straight up smiling.
I move like a flash. I grab a throwing knife from my boot and throw it in Sara's direction with inhuman speed. It nails the wall, a hair length away from Sara's throat. Just slightly closer and it would have killed her.
I can see the fire in Sara's eyes but she doesn't move, probably in fear of what I would do. I use my powers to command the air to return my knife to me. The knife flies back into my hand and I fit it back into my boot.
"I don't care what you think. And I sure as hell don't care if anyone else trusts me. But I'm here to stay, for now. This mission isn't the only thing I have to do. If you don't want me here, you can deal with it because I'm here to stay for now. Oh, but a hint for the future, don't talk to me like that again or next time, I'll make sure I won't miss." I say calmly without a hint of emotion in my voice.
Little did Sara know, I am enjoying this chaos.
Everyone began to breathe again and Ray continued with his rant.
"Well, I can't. I can't live with somebody putting a cap on my destiny. I spent my whole like working to be something greater by becoming something smaller. Then some guy comes and tells me that being the Atom is as insignificant as an actual atom."
"That is not what he said. Rip said that in his future we are nobodies, but this mission is about changing the future. I mean, if we have the power to change the world, don't you think we have the power to change our own fate?" I asked.
"For better or for worse," Leonard added and I looked at him smirking.
"That's a very good point," Ray stated.
We all walk out of the storage room and head toward the bridge with me in the lead.
The rest of the team walks in on Rip, Kendra, and Carter talking. Professor Boardman is dead. I can feel it with my powers.
"Don't torture yourself with recriminations. One of the great lessons of time travel is that many things cannot be changed. Time wants to happen. Chronos, even Vandal, won't be the only enemy we face. Often, it will be time itself." Rip explained to them. I noticed his eyes widen slightly at the sight of the rest of the team.
"Whether it wants to happen or not, we're gonna change time, erase Savage's future, and earn our rightful place in history," Ray said firmly.
"Dr. Palmer is correct. We may not be legends in your time, Captain, but we are going to decide our own fates," Stein added.
"I don't give a damn about being a legend, as long as we end Savage once and for all," Carter said firmly.
"I can get down with that," Jax said.
"And our malcontents?" Stein asked turning to Leonard and Mick.
"I like killing people," Mick stated bluntly.
"We're in, for now," Leonard translated. He turns to me.
"Ditto," I said which earns me either shocked or angry looks from everyone on the team except for Ray, Leonard, and Mick. I plaster a smile on my face to piss most of them off, which succeeds. But a single thought was nagging me in the back of my head. Why did no one else ask me what my decision is? But I ignore the feeling of despair that slightly began rising up.
I turn to Rip. "So how do we find this guy?"
"Professor Boardman had a theory about that. I've already had Gideon plot a course," Rip said sitting in his captain seat while the rest of the team sat in their seats. This time, I sat in between Snart and Mick.
"Wouldn't this be the perfect time for a catchphrase or something?" I ask earning me a smirk from the criminals beside me. Rip pushed the lever that made us time jump with new energy and determination.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above.
