《Waxing Gibbous》Waiting (A)

It was hard to pull away when the sun rose, but we had our job to do, a job that might be more difficult than all the rest of our family's searches put together.
Rose and I went downstairs to begin breakfast. Eggs, Bacon, waffles; we wanted to go all out. The new family joined ours and Renesmee sat next to Demetri eating some eggs.
"I wish there was a way to get the information from Eleazar before we tell them about the pups... just in case"
"the pups?" Bella asked, Edward smirked looking at me.
"That's what Alex calls them"
I shook my head, but the others only laughed. Demetri smiled at me, he knew there was a chance that he would be just like me, and he was ecstatic. He loved the wolves, and he loved playing with the totem that hung around his neck.
'this was my dad's..." I told him as i hung the leather cord around his neck.
'Grandpa Charlie's?' he asked. Charlie had become an important part of his life, and he didn't want to single Demetri out. It was actually Charlie that said it first and I couldn't explain how it felt to know that he saw me as one of his kids, that he saw Demetri as his grandson. He already planned fishing trips and all sorts of things.
I shook my head 'No, Charlie is Bella's dad... but my dad' I showed him a picture 'this is my dad, his name was Demetrius'
'that's my name' he perked up.
'you were named after him. He died when I was little and Charlie kinda became my father after that. I wore this necklace before I phased, just like he did.'
'just like me?' Demetri asked.
'maybe, I'm not sure if it will happen or not. But it should you have the genes for it. If not then you'll be just like your mommy'
Demetri was obsessed with being like me, he loved it and I hoped he would be. But if he wasn't that was okay, I would love him regardless.
"But he wouldn't understand the question to answer it," Bella agreed. "Do you think they'll let us explain?"
"I don't know."
"Edward, why do you think Alice told us to ask Eleazar about the Volturi? What could he know?" I asked.
"Eleazar knows everything when it comes to the Volturi. I forgot you two didn't know. He used to be one of them."
Bella hissed. "What?" she demanded.
"come now Bella, wasn't Carlisle with them at one point too?" I asked looking at Rose and Edward. Rose nodded but Edward spoke.
"Eleazar is a very gentle person. He wasn't entirely happy with the Volturi, but he respected the law and its need to be upheld. He felt he was working toward the greater good. He doesn't regret his time with them. But when he found Carmen, he found his place in this world. They are very similar people, both very compassionate for vampires." He smiled again. "They met Tanya and her sisters, and they never looked back. They are well suited to this lifestyle. If they'd never found Tanya, I imagine they would have eventually discovered a way to live without human blood on their own."

Edward glanced at Seth "No, he wasn't one of their warriors, so to speak. He had a gift they found convenient."
Seth must have asked the obvious follow-up question. Though he probably was just curious.
"He has an instinctive feel for the gifts of others - the extra abilities that some vampires have," Edward told him. "He could give Aro a general idea of what any given vampire was capable of just by being in proximity with him or her. This was helpful when the Volturi went into battle. He could warn them if someone in the opposing coven had a skill that might give them some trouble. That was rare; it takes quite a skill to even inconvenience the Volturi for a moment. More often, the warning would give Aro the chance to save someone who might be useful to him. Eleazar's gift works even with humans, to an extent. He has to really concentrate with humans, though, because the latent ability is so nebulous. Aro would have him test the people who wanted to join, to see if they had any potential. Aro was sorry to see him go."
"They let him go?" Bella asked. "Just like that?"
His smile was darker now, a little twisted. "The Volturi aren't supposed to be the villains, the way they seem to you. They are the foundation of our peace and civilization. Each member of the guard chooses to serve them. It's quite prestigious; they all are proud to be there, not forced to be there." Bella scowled at the ground "They're only alleged to be heinous and evil by the criminals, Bella."
"We're not criminals."
"they don't know that" I spoke "it's easy to assume based on Irina's report. As far as they know you've not only involved yourselves with Werewolves but immortal children. It's dangerous."
"Do you really think we can make them listen?" Bella asked. I looked at Rose then to Demetri and Renesmee and then my pack. There had to be some sort of way for them to survive. Even if it meant killing their tracker and letting Seth and Leah run.
Edward hesitated just the tiniest moment and then shrugged. "If we find enough friends to stand beside us. Maybe."
If.
That was it if we could get enough people e on our side. I suddenly felt the urgency of what we had before us today.
"Tanya shouldn't be too much longer," Edward said. "We need to be ready."
I looked at Seth and Embry, who joined us to help with Leah being gone. "guys, disperse. You know what we need to do."
"More vamps equals more wolves" Seth said.
"don't worry, we got this. Sam's ready, you just look out for your pups" Embry replied with a smile on his face.
I nodded "Remember we'll be informed of everyone who is coming, Sam will know too"
Embry nodded as he got up. "maybe Jacob will come back and help"

I nodded "maybe but util then don't rely on it"
After they left Rose and I cleaned up everything and Rose made sure Demetri was out of his pj's.
"Demetri, buddy we need to get you dressed, okay?" I asked looking at the boy. Demetri often slept in Edward's old room, that's also where Leah and Seth slept. But all of his clothes were in the massive closet that Rosalie had.
Demetri had just finished bathing and was now standing around in his underwear and a tank top. Rose was currently in some jeans, heeled boots, and a button up. I was in a similar attire, jeans, tennis shoes, tank top and my leather jacket.
Demetri went to pick out his clothes, a pair of jeans, then he grabbed a button up shirt and a sweater to go over it. "dressing to impress, huh little man?"
He nodded "I want them to like me" he whispered. I smiled with sympathy.
"we're going to do our best" I replied helping him get dressed. Rose fixed his hair, brushing it like normal, slightly wavy but still neat. Today he was mirroring Carlisle. He sure was an adorable looking three-year-old.
After he was dressed Rosalie, Bella, the pups, and I waited around the corner from the front door in the dining room, sitting at the big polished table. Both the kids were in their mothers arms, waiting.
I knew I was as strong as a vampire in my human form, and I could distract them long enough that Bella and Rose could run, just in case.
But I had faith that Edward could convince them.
I tried to remember Tanya, Kate, Carmen, and Eleazar from the wedding. Their faces were murky, I avoided them at the time. I only knew they were beautiful, two blondes – that Eric thought looked like my mom and aunt and two brunettes.
Edward leaned motionlessly against the back window wall, staring toward the front door. It didn't look like he was seeing the room in front of him. We listened to the cars zooming past out on the freeway, none of them slowing.
"What if they don't like me?" Renesmee whispered, and all our eyes flashed to her face.
"They don't understand you, Renesmee, because they've never met anyone like you or Demetri" I told her, not wanting to lie to her with promises that might not come true.
"Getting them to understand is the problem." Bella added, throwing me a thankful look."You're special, that's not a bad thing." Bella added.
Renesmee shook her head in disagreement. She thought of our strained faces and said, "This is my fault."
"no" all of the adults said in unison but before we could argue further, we heard the sound we'd been waiting for: the slowing of an engine on the freeway, the tires moving from pavement to soft dirt.
Edward darted around the corner to stand waiting by the door. Renesmee hid in Bella's hair, while Demetri wanted down to stand in between Rose and I, one of our hands in each of his.
The car moved quickly through the woods, faster than Charlie or my mom drove. We heard it pull into the meadow and stop by the front porch. Four doors opened and closed. They didn't speak as they approached the door. Edward opened it before they could knock.
"Edward!" a female voice enthused.
"Hello, Tanya. Kate, Eleazar, Carmen."
Three murmured hellos.
"Carlisle said he needed to talk to us right away," the first voice said, Tanya. I could hear that they all were still outside. I imagined Edward in the doorway, blocking their entrance. "What's the problem? Trouble with the werewolves?"
I rolled my eyes and Demetri huffed. I smiled down at him, he didn't like that term any more than I did.
"No," Edward said. "Our truce with the wolves is stronger than ever."
I felt better now that the Cullen's weren't calling us werewolves, they all remembered the real werewolves and Rosalie had seen firsthand what the damage does. Three long ragged scars along my ribs, shoulder and hip. I still don't quite remember getting the ones on my hip.
I didn't like talking about them, Rose didn't have an issue with my scars, Emmett and Lucia thought they were badass, and I knew it made Jasper feel a little better to know he wasn't the only one scarred. He felt less better about it when he remembered I got mine defending my and his family.
I remember Demetri asking about the scars once, they were visible unless I was in a t-shirt, even a tank top couldn't keep them covered.
'momma, what's that?" he asked pointing to the scars along my shoulder. I looked at him.
'that's from a werewolf.'
'are they bad?' he looked confused; I would be too seeing as he was surrounded by wolves all the time.
'only on full moons, when they are people they're still just people.'
He looked up at the sky, like he was imagining the moon. 'I promise, I will never let any of them come near you. they aren't like me or Leah or Seth'
'or Sam?'
I smiled 'right, they aren't like us. But I promise I wont let any hurt you or your mommy' He nodded and wrapped his arms around my neck.
A woman chuckled.
"Aren't you going to invite us in?" Tanya asked. And then she continued without waiting for an answer. "Where's Carlisle?"
"Carlisle had to leave."
