《Waxing Gibbous》Something Strange (A)

By the time Eve got home dinner was done.

"I thought you hated this story" she asked as she looked at the television. My mom laughed while setting the table.

"I do, it's awful. But it's for school Mr. Berty wanted us to watch the movie for some reason. As if reading the books wasn't enough" I grumbled picking up my stuff. I really disliked the Romeo and Juliet.

"it's okay, I agree with you, if they only communicated this wouldn't have happened" my mom replied gesturing to the 'death' scene that was currently playing.

"or if just checked if she had a heartbeat" Eve replied. I laughed again; my family was far to science based to be fooled by this.

After dinner I settled in my room a sketchbook in my hands. I looked at the new drawings, the new landscapes, the new markers. It was like my dreams were trying to lead me to something, each picture was getting more and more detailed. It was a valley now, a valley in the middle of the wilderness of Canada or Alaska, I wasn't sure. But at least these dreams were spaced between the murderous vampires.

That night like the others, I had another dream. They were getting more frequent, different events but the same location, same theme.

And all brought the same confusion.

I was in the sky, like an eagle flying over the land. It was dark now. Howls of wolfs filled the air as I flew closer to my desire. But just before I saw the location something else caught my eye. A boat.

They were dressed in clothing from the early 1900's, I flew along a river, upstream, following the men on the boat. They were looking for something, a place to stop or maybe someone.

The river took a sharp turn, and the boat goes through a canyon. Sheer cliffs touch up against the river. A tingle goes up my spine as I look at the walls of the canyons, the walls that have caves embedded into them but none that I could see into.

It got dark immediately; the wind picked up. it was terrifying, like a horror movie. As the river continues eventually the banks of the river get wider and give room for a boat to dock. A voice calls out catching my attention.

A tent was wedged between some trees. The men docked the boat and I perched in a tree. It didn't take me long to notice the body lying on the ground, outside of the tent.

The men run over quickly.

The body was headless, its clothes were ripped and destroyed, blood stained the ground. Inside the tent there was another body, just like the other one. Headless and mauled like an animal did so. Pieces of flesh and bone missing.

The men searched the camp looking for anything else. But my eyes caught a wolf in the distance. A large black wolf. It looked right at me as if trying to relay some sort of information, before looking up into the sky at the full moon.

The blinding moon pierced my eyes and I shot up in my bed.

I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes trying to figure out what my dream meant, I mean it had to mean something. I've been seeing the same wolf, the same location for weeks now. I should look it up, see if an incident like that happened but how would I know where to look. Just google 'Headless men mauled.' Yeah, I don't think that would narrow it down. At least not good enough.

When I got down to the kitchen, I found both my mom an aunt, which I thought was weird.

"Hey Al, you're up early"

I looked at the time and saw I was definitely up earlier than I normally was. "huh... I had a weird dream. Guess I didn't look at the time"

"what was the dream about?" my mom asked as she set a plate of eggs, potatoes, and bacon in front of me.

"thanks" I replied before debating on whether I should tell them the entire thing, but decided better of it. "I was an eagle, and flying. Over a valley of sorts. Not sure where, but it was beautiful"

"maybe that's your conscious telling you, you should go skydiving with me" Eve joked.

"I think it's more wingsuit-ting that skydiving" I replied.

"well, we can do that"

"no... no." my mom replied, "not until your 18."

My aunt and I chuckled. "speaking of 18, how'd Bella like her present?" Eve asked.

"I thought there was an agreement of no gifts" my mom added looking between the two of us.

I chuckled "it wasn't really a present per say"

"it was actually quite funny." Eve added. My mom quirked her eyebrow.

"do I really want to know?"

"well, Bella's been a little hung up on the idea that 18 is old for some reason." I mumbled getting looks from my mom.

"I thought people usually waited until 30 to say they're old"

"So I decided to remind Bella that she's still a kid. Just have to think like it, I mean look at Eve"

"normally I would take that as an offense but it's true"

"so, I gave her some gifts that kids love, like a jar of dirt, a stick and a box."

Eve snorted, earning laughter from everyone. "and how did she respond to that?" my mom asked.

I furrowed my brows "I don't know, I didn't see her open it. I'm sure she'll tell me today. But I kinda handed to her then ran off so she couldn't give it back"

Eve chuckled then stopped to look at me, her hand running along her head comparing our height. "You're taller than you were yesterday"

My mom turned to look at me as if she were trying to discern if Eve was right. Her brows furrowed when she realized that our eyes were level now.

"you have gotten taller... Maybe you're going through a growth spurt" she mumbled. I shrugged, I did get a little taller and it was kinda nice that I was no longer the shortest person here. Finally, I was about the same height as my family.

On the way to school something felt off I wasn't sure why, but it was wrong. Not in a bad way, like I felt before I was essentially kidnapped by a murderous vampire who wanted to 'keep' me.

But an 'off' like change was coming.

When I got to school, that was the start of it. Alice was missing, or skipping, I didn't think it was possible for a vampire to disappear.

Edward was gloomy, almost like he was before Bella showed up, and Bella well she was confused or sad I couldn't tell really. I wasn't sure I wanted to get involved in the issue, but I kept watch. They walked in silence.

Edward was aloof.

When we got to lunch, just like normal I sat on the 'dividing' line near Mike. There was conversation of projects, last minute trips before winter. I thought about going on hikes or something before it got too cold and I started getting sick, but the thought of being in the woods alone...

I zoned out of the conversation and my thoughts when I heard Bella ask, "Where's Alice?"

Edward looked at the granola bar he was slowly pulverizing between his fingertips while he answered. "She's with Jasper."

"Is he okay?"

"He's gone away for a while."

"What? Where?"

Edward shrugged. "Nowhere in particular."

"And Alice, too," Bella said with quiet desperation. It made me wonder what happened last night, after school ended. Something strange enough to cause both of them to seem pained.

Once again, I didn't know something, it normally didn't bother me and it shouldn't, but Bella looked uncomfortable and had been acting weird all morning. I worried for the couple; afraid they may be breaking up.

The way Edward was acting, he was distant not at all like the love-struck boy everyone was starting to get used to.

It wasn't until I got home that I realized just how much things were changing. Starting with the transfer of Dr. Cullen, to some big hospital in another state.

I hoped this wouldn't turn out badly, but it also gave me a reason to believe that something else happened. They didn't leave at the end of the year when Bella nearly died, they wouldn't just leave without a reason. Plus, Alice said they stayed until everyone graduated.

The next two days passed quickly, each day Edward was silent, ignoring Bella and Bella was distracted, in English Mr. Berty had to ask her the same question twice before she realized he was talking to her.

She was in her head far more than normal. I couldn't explain it and I wasn't the only one who noticed but I think everyone was afraid to say something.
