《Nothing Lasts Forever》7. Song One Out Of Two

I sit up in bed and hold my upper body up with one of my forearms.
I bring my hands up to flip my warm pillow over to the cooler side.
I fluff said pillow before laying back down in my bed.
Unfortunately, I am only still for a few moments before flipping onto my other side.
I attempt my best at sleep, again.
I am still for a few minutes only to flip onto my back when I realize that I am not going to get any sleep tonight.
While on my back I briefly glance over towards Sean.
Sean is deep asleep on his stomach. He is in such a deep sleep that he is snoring on the louder side.
It must be great to get some sleep after celebrating all night with your friends, not even bothering to contact your girlfriend at all.
I roll my eyes at the sight of him.
I could be using this anger towards much better projects.
A lightbulb goes off in my head at this suggestion.
I waste no time pushing the white duvet cover off of my body and swinging my legs over my side of the bed.
As soon as I stand up from said bed I make my way towards my closet where I end up sliding a grey pair of sweatpants over my night shorts.
I slip a thin white jacket over my tshirt, deciding to leave it unzipped.
Before I leave my closet I slip on a pair of vans and turn the light off behind me.
I exit the bedroom only to enter the dark living room.
The only light entering said room coming from the moonlight that is streaming through the window.
I quickly make my way through said room until I reach the front door.
I retrieve my car keys from the table near said door. I unlock the door and pull it open, briskly exiting it before shutting it behind me.
A cold breeze kisses my face as I make my way towards my car.
I guess it truly is fall now.
-
My pale knuckles continue to hammer against the glass the door, only pausing once I hear someone unlocking the door from the other side.
The large cloudy glass door swings open to reveal an extremely tired Bea.
She appears to be so tired that she cannot be bothered to even open her eyes all of the way.
"It's five in the morning, Delaney." My blue haired friend informs me with a monotonous tone
To be quite frank she already seems like she wants to close the door in my face already.
The cold autumn air brushes past us causing her to tighten her grey knitted blanket around her shoulders.
"Is your boyfriend here with you?" I hurriedly ask her, not wishing to waste much time
She uses one of her hands to point behind her.
Possibly in the direction of their bedroom.
"Yeah, he's still sleeping. Why?" She answers, her eyes still closed
Great!
I waste no time and reach my hand out to grab ahold of her exposed wrist, dragging her out of her house.
I make sure that I close the door behind her before dragging her towards me car.
I am assuming that my spontaneity takes my best friend by surprise considering her utter shock at my reaction.
"What are you doing?!" She exclaims
She is quiet considering the fact that she does not want to create some kind of ruckus, but her voice is sharp and alert.
"We are going for a drive" I vaguely inform her

The blue haired girl continuously trips over her feet as she attempts to keep up with my hurried pace.
"What does the even mean?!" She whisper shouts
I roll my eyes at her question, choosing to remain silent.
I release my grip on her wrist once we reach my vehicle.
At this point Bea is completely awake.
The two of us climb into said vehicle.
I in the drivers seat and Bea in the passengers seat.
I wait until she closes her car door to start up my car, the engine roaring back to life.
"Where are we going?" She asks with a much calmer tone of voice
I shrug as I begin to pull out of her driveway.
"I needed to get out of the apartment" I avoid telling her the full truth
There is a mild, skin crawling silence between the two of us for a few seconds.
Bea attempting to read my blank expression.
A few more seconds go by before my companion sighs.
"You couldn't have let me grab my shoes or phone at least?" She questions with slight annoyance
I smile at her, briefly glancing away from the vacant road to stare at her.
"You know I can always buy you new shoes" I smirk
The blue haired woman turns to face me, a smile breaking out onto her face.
"Eyes on the road, Miss Moneybags" she teases me
I am thoroughly surprised when she brings one of her hands up to my face, using her pointer finger to gently turn my head so that my eyes are on the road in front of us.
The still vacant road that is.
This is California! How are the roads so empty right now?
I chuckle at Bea's joke.
"Yes ma'am."
-
"Uh, why are we at a recording studio?" Bea cannot help but question as I pull into the mostly empty parking lot
I do not immediately answer her question.
This is due to me trying to see if I can come up with a perfectly logical excuse that does not sound too far fetched.
"Delaney" Bea calls out, alerting me that I have not answered her question
I shrug and turn off my car, pulling my keys from the ignition.
"I needed somewhere to think, a better environment" I elaborate
I give the blue haired woman no time to respond as I open my car door and climb out of it, making my way towards the building.
My legs are quick to walk towards the large brick building, only stopping once I reach the double doors.
I patiently wait until my friend catches up to me to grab ahold of the large metal door handle and pull said door open.
As Bea and I enter the building a loud buzz goes off, alerting Benny of our entrance.
"Good Morning, Benny" I greet the middle aged man with a polite smile
The middle aged man gains a confused facial expression at my mere presence.
"Good Morning, Miss Carson?" He greets me back
I lightly chuckle at the evident confusion on his face.
"May I ask why you're here so early?" Benny cannot help but inquire
I do not mind the question that he is asking.
I have never been here this early in the morning, even when I was writing my previous albums.
"I was feeling creative," I shrug
"You are not attempting to stifle my creativity, are you?" I joke with him
Thankfully Benny notices my teasing tone.
A warm smile breaks out onto his face.
Benny reaches underneath his desk and presses the button that unlocks the door in front of us.

The large metal door unlocks with a sharp click.
"Have a nice session, Miss Carson" Benny continues to smile
I give the older man a singular head nod before grabbing ahold of the doorknob and pulling it open.
My best friend follows me through the dimly lit hallway.
I lead her through said hallway until I reach a 'soundproof' room labeled with the number 'twenty-one' in white lettering.
"Is this your recording room?" Bea asks as I push the door open
Wha-
Right, she has never been here before.
"No, they are not assigned,"
"This one is just my favorite" I inform her
I leave the door ajar, allowing the blue haired woman to walk past me into the dark room.
As soon as she is completely inside of said recording studio I flip the light switch so that the room is now covered in a dim white light, the door softly closing behind us.
At the sight of the illuminated studio the blue haired girl's eyes curiously take in the interior of said studio.
There is a cushioned black futon resting against one of the large cream colored windows. Directly beside said futon there is a portable keyboard resting on its stand in the corner of the room. In between these two things there is an acoustic guitar that is resting on a black guitar stand.
A few feet in front of them there is a technical recording board that rests directly in front of the glass recording studio.
In between each of these things there is a large red carpet that efficiently covers a large portion of the cold hardwood flooring.
"It looks..." I presume my best friend tries to think of a way to compliment the space
I patiently wait for her to come up with a descriptive word.
"Comfortable?" She hesitates
A small smile breaks out on my face at her response.
"I specifically decorated it so that I could not only comfortably write songs, but comfortably sleep as well" I inform her as I make my way over to my keyboard
As I reach said instrument I reach out towards the bench underneath it and flip the cushion up, revealing a secret compartment.
Well...not so secret anymore.
I retrieve my rainbow colored song book from said compartment along with a pen.
As soon as I have these items I close said compartment and and grab ahold of my guitar that is squeezed in between the keyboard and the futon.
I seriously need to find a new place for this.
Once I have everything I need I make my way over to the comedically large, red, faux fur rug.
I carefully place everything down in front of me before kicking off my shoes and getting comfortable on said rug.
Just when I go to grab ahold of my songbook I realize the Bea is still residing next to the door.
"Come on" I encourage her
I even go as far as to use my hand to beckon her over.
The blue haired girl rolls her eyes at me, but begins to make her way over to me nonetheless.
"I'm not a dog, Delaney" she voices as she takes a seat a few inches beside me on the rug
I raise an eyebrow at her when I notice that she is smiling with amusement.
"Good girl" I decide to joke one last time.
-
I finish scribbling down the possible song lyric that comes to my head while Bea continues to snore beside me on the red carpet.
When I write songs I prefer to come up with the melody first before writing any lyrics.
Many people that I have explained this to think that I am just making songwriting harder for myself when in fact it is easier for me to do it this way.
It took me a few hours to come up with a guitar combination that I enjoyed enough to settle with.
When I had said combination figured out I retrieved my cellphone and recorded myself playing it in case I had little recollection of it in the morning.
Unfortunately for me somewhere in the middle of me coming up with a combination Bea fell asleep on the carpet, her head resting on the futon.
When Bea sleeps she snores, loudly.
That was obviously a problem I was going to have if I needed to be able to hear the combination in the video.
I took a risk and filmed the video anyways, watching it back once I was finished.
I swear that I thanked all the gods above when you could not hear Bea's snoring due to my guitar drowning her out.
As soon as I finish writing down the lyric Bea suddenly ceases her snoring, slowly standing up from her spot on the floor.
Okay. That was...sudden.
I briefly glance up at the blue haired girl who is currently stretching her arms above her head.
I do not miss the way the edge of her shirt rides up a little to expose her lower abdomen.
Hmmm...not a bad sight at all.
Before Bea gets the chance to catch me I shake the thought out of my head and hurriedly glance back down at my songbook.
"I'm starving," she tiredly groans out
I softly chuckle at this due to her voice sounding funny.
"Is there any food around here?" She asks, lowering her arms to her sides
I carefully move my book a few inches in front of my crossed legs so that it is also laying on top of the rug, resting my pen in the crease of said book.
"There should be a vending machine at the end of the hallway, but it is usually locked until ten in the morning" I inform her
Unfortunately it seems like it is barely bordering nine in the morning.
Bea groans with annoyance at this inconvenience.
"Fuck it, I'm going to the In n Out across the street" she quietly sighs out
I continue to smile in amusement at my friend as she makes her way towards the door and out of the studio.
"Remember that we are in room twenty-one!" I call out
She hums before allowing the large door to close behind her.
-
I hear the door to the studio open less than ten minutes later which causes me to furrow my eyebrows with confusion.
I have to say that was really quick.
I glance up from my spot on the rug towards the door.
My entire mood drops at the sight of Nicole standing at the door, her arms crossed in front of her chest.
"What are you doing here?" I question, not even attempting to hide my disdain
The woman gives me an incredulous facial expression.
"My job," she replies with a dry tone
I roll my eyes at her negative attitude.
Great! Now my morning is ruined again.
First by my boyfriend, now by my manager.
The older woman makes her way into said room, glancing down at my opened song book.
"Is that one of the songs I asked you to write?" She questions
"Mhm" I hum
"Play it for me" she demands
My eyebrows instantly furrow at her request.
She is kidding...right?
"It is nowhere near finished" I tell her truthfully
Knowing her she is going to verbally call out every little detail she dislikes about it.
I would know. She did it with every single song on my last two albums and three EPs.
"Okay?" She retorts, not entirely caring
I try my hardest not to roll my eyes at her again due to her looking directly at my face.
I carefully pick up my guitar and adjust it on my lap, angling it so that I can reach my arms around it.
It takes me a few moments to get my fingering correct.
Once I do however I glance down at the lyrics in my book.
It takes me no time at all to memorize them.
I double check to make sure that my fingers are placed correctly, my nerves begin to set in.
Nicole says something but I decide to block her out.
My fingers begin to strum a slow, steady rhythm on the acoustic guitar.
"I got something I gotta get off of my chest," I softly sing along with the instrument
"I've been staying up while you're sleeping in my bed,"
"I don't hate you, babe, it's worse than that,"
"'Cause you hurt me and I don't react,"
"I've been building up this thing for months,"
I take a brief pause, allowing the guitar to play a few notes.
"Resentment," I breathe out
I am unable to hide the disappointment from seeping through to my speech.
My fingers cease their playing of the instrument and I move it down so that it is now resting on my lap.
Nicole is silent for a few moments which forces me to glance up at her.
"Oh...was that it?" She asks with a mildly disgusted expression
I silently nod my head, preparing for her criticism.
The woman sighs with disappointment as she brings one of her hands up to massage her temples.
I take this chance to roll my eyes at her over dramatic reaction.
She is unbelievable.
I carefully move my guitar off of my lap, leaning it against the wall, before standing up from my spot on the rug.
Woah! I have been sitting down way too long.
It takes me a few moments to regain my balance.
Nicole finally removes her hand from her face just as I gain my balance.
"How do I put this nicely?" She whispers underneath her breath but I hear her as clear as day
The woman is silent for a few moments, obviously thinking about what she is going to say next.
"No one is going to come to a concert of yours to hear a sad, slow song," she voices
"Your demographic is teenagers and young adults. Teenagers want pop music, pop music sells," she informs me
"Your pop music sells especially well, Miss International,"
I assume that she is referring to how my music does oddly well worldwide.
"If you really want to make a break up song then make it more upbeat. You'll get more engagement, not to mention money from all of the streams" she tries to persuade me
I cross my arms at her stance on this.
"I am not going to make an 'upbeat pop song'," I tell her
Nicole seems a bit taken aback by my forward tone.
"I actually like the song that I am writing and plan on performing it whether I get money from it or not" I shrug
She is silent as she tenses and untenses her jaw.
I raise an eyebrow at her as I wait for a response from her.
This suffocating silence surrounds us until the sound of the door opening greets our ears.
My eyes instinctively glance towards said door where I notice Bea entering said room with a large bag of fast food burgers in it.
The blue haired girl goes to speak only to pause when she notices my manager.
"I'll handle this" is all Nicole says before exiting the studio
Bea waits until the door closes behind Nicole to finally speak.
"What was Nicole doing here?!" She whisper shouts
I shake my head.
"I really do not want to talk about it right now" I tell her with honesty
Bea nods her head, the two of us making our way towards the futon.
"I forgot to ask you what you wanted so I got you a cheeseburger" she informs me as she goes to pull said burger out of the bag
I shake my head at her.
"I am not hungry, maybe later" I lie
The blue haired girl furrows her eyebrows at me.
"But you love cheeseburgers," she states
She eventually retrieves said burger and holds it out for me to grab ahold of.
I continue to shake my head at her, pushing it back towards her.
"Come on, just try it. It even has tomatoes on it and-" Bea tries her best to get me to eat the burger
Something clicks in my head which causes me to snap at her.
"No Bea! I am not going to try a stupid cheeseburger!" I snap at her
The blue haired girl freezes, dropping her hand.
She stares at me for a few minutes in complete silence.
"What's going on?" She inevitably breaks the silence
The sadness in her tone speaks volumes.
I hurt her.
"Nothing, I just do not want to eat a cheeseburger" I shrug
She continues to practically analyze my demeanor.
"You need to eat something, Delaney," she informs me
I am silent which causes a glimmer of panic to shine in her eyes.
"Promise me that you'll eat when you get home" she begs
I mentally sigh at her question.
I plaster a small smile onto my face.
"Of course"
Bea's eyes widen the slightest bit.
"Promise me, Delaney!" She commands
"I promise."
Little did she know that I was lying straight to her face.
