《Nothing Lasts Forever》5. Adapt And Overcome

I am currently adorned in a cropped white collared shirt that is covered by a sky blue knitted vest, a white pleated skirt that stops around the middle of my thighs, and a thick matching white headband that is resting in my straightened hair.

I finish tying my white tennis shoes just as Sean strolls out of the bathroom in nothing but his plaid boxers.

At this point I am used to this.

I notice the blonde haired boy thoroughly checking me out through the corner of my eye.

"Where are you going?" He rasps out due to him just waking up

I pause as soon as I finish tying my shoe.

"I told you last night that Nicole wants to meet with me at nine" I tell him

He seemed to be listening to me last night.

I guess it was just an act.

The blonde continues to give me a confused facial expression.

Oh my god.

He really was not listening to me.

I sigh and stand up from our bed, not in the mood to rehash our entire conversation to him.

"Refrain from hurting yourself," I sigh out

I begin to make my way over towards my vanity.

"She more than likely wants to talk to me about the movie" I tell him

I go to pick up one of my necklaces only to freeze in my spot when the bedroom is suddenly filled with Sean's loud groan.

I inevitably spin around to face the dramatic boy.

"You're always gone nowadays" he practically whines

My boyfriend takes a few steps forward before plopping down on my bed.

I tighten my jaw at his statement, holding back an angry rant.

"I am not 'always gone', Sean," I inform him

"I have been in this apartment for the last month studying and memorizing my script," I continue

"You could have came into the living room and helped me study, you could have even just sat there silently! Instead you chose to stay in our bedroom the entire time!" My voice progressively becomes louder due to frustration

"If you really want to spend time with me then you would make it happen" I finish

I take in a deep breath of air to calm myself before clasping my necklace around my neck.

Sean is completely silent as I do this.

I chalk this up to him thinking of an excuse, or rather an answer in his book.

It does not take me long to put my necklace on.

Once I have the piece of jewelry on I decide to put on my rings.

"Lets go on a date," he suggests

"We haven't had a date night in awhile" he elaborates

I take a moment to think over this.

He is right, we have not had a date in months now.

Who knows, a date night might be just what we need.

"Okay," I agree

"When?" I ask to make sure that I am free

Sean hums, supposedly thinking of an answer.

"I have auditions all week, next week?" He suggests

I shake my head albeit him looking down at his cellphone.

"I start filming for the movie" I answer

Sean hums again.

"What about tonight?" He suggests

"I think that I should be home by five or six" he asks

I do not think that I am busy today.

To my knowledge all I have is this meeting with Nicole and two interviews.

"Yeah, I should be free tonight" I assure him

I hear him shut off his cellphone.

"Great! Wear something nice because I'm making reservations" he tells me

Really?

Of all the ways he could have told me to wear a dress he chooses to word it that way.

I need to speak with him about respect next.

I take a seat on the cushioned white couch across from Nicole's large desk.

As I make my way towards said couch I hear the lady from the front desk gently close Nicole's office door, leaving Nicole and I in complete privacy.

Well...auditory wise we are, the large window behind Nicole's desk that over looks the city makes it very hard to be completely private.

"You're late" Nicole comments with a bored tone

Her fingers continue to fly over her keyboard.

She must be writing an email.

"I am three minutes early" I inform her

The older woman removes one of her hands from her keyboard and brings it over onto her mouse. She proceeds to use said mouse to click something on her computer screen.

"From now on you should always be five minutes early, it makes you look more professional" the older woman informs me

I nod my head before bringing one of my legs up to rest on top of the other.

There is an uncomfortable silence between the two of us as Nicole finishes off her email.

A total of three minutes go by, the only thing I have to occupy my time being the large black analog clock hanging from one of her office walls.

"Okay," she sighs out

I shift my eyes away from the clock and towards the older woman.

Immediately I notice that her eyes are already on me, a blank look resting within them.

"I've called you here to talk about your next career move" she says

My eyebrows instantly furrow in response to my internal confusion.

"Next career move? I am filming a movie, am I not?" I ask

I assumed that we would not have any of these particular meetings until I was nearly finished with said movie.

We have not even began filming yet.

"You are," Nicole assures me

"But you won't bring the company much money from that considering the director is only paying the actors," she informs me

I silently nod my head.

I did not know this. I just assumed that the company would get forty percent while I get seventy percent, it usually happens this way more often than not.

"With that being said, I took matters into my own hands and came up with a tour schedule" Nicole smiles

My eyes practically bulge out of my cranium at her suggestion.

A tour and a movie at the same time?!

I have never done something like this before!

"I cannot do a tour and a movie at the same time, Nicole" I tell the lady

I should not be speaking to my manager this way, but I truly think that she has lost her mind.

"Sure you can," I brushes my concern off

"We will need you to write around two new songs beforehand, but I think that three months from now would be ideal," she voices

"That way we can confirm venues, promote, and sell tickets," she continues on

She is trying so hard to rush this that I am sure that it is going to show.

"I'm thinking of ten locations in three weeks as a starter," Nicole explains the game plan to me

"We'll sell a very limited amount of tickets for each location that way it is completely exclusive," she continues

"The more exclusive it is, the more people will want to go," a rather cynical smirk makes its way onto Nicole's face

"All that goes without the fans who will be mindlessly posting about it, unknowingly giving you free press" Nicole leans back in her large desk chair

I wait until she is finished with her insane rant to shake my head at her.

"I refuse to trick my fans, that is just foul" I shut down her plan

The lady rolls her eyes with annoyance evident on her face.

She soon takes in a deep inhale before opening her mouth again.

"What are you not understanding?" She asks with a rhetorical tone of voice

"The whole reason they're going to the concert is to watch you perform, hear you sing, and possibly even meet you in person," she lists off

"All you have to do is go to sound check the day before and perform the night of, it's easy!" She exclaims

Well...when she puts it that way I guess that it makes sense.

"How am I supposed to balance both a tour and a movie?" I cannot help but ask

Nicole smiles appreciatively at my compliance.

"Leave that to me," she vaguely voice

"You should have your updated filming schedule for tour month a week or two before tour begins," Nicole roughly estimates

I silently nod my head.

She notices my sudden silence and blatantly eyes me up and down with a seemingly suspicious look on her face.

"Do you have any questions?" She asks

I silently shake my head at her question.

She gives me a singular head nod.

"Do you know your schedule for today?" She asks me

I give her another silent head nod.

A smile makes its way onto Nicole's face as she clasps her fingers together.

"Great! You're free to go" she releases me

I politely smile at the woman before uncrossing my legs.

I rise from the small white couch, making sure to fix my skirt.

I gently tug at the end of my pleated skirt until I am satisfied with how it rests against my skin.

Once I am finished with this action I grab ahold of my purse and scurry out of Nicole's office.

-

"You look like you're going to throw up at any moment" my friend jokes

I try my best to swallow the large lump in my throat.

Unfortunately, this only causes me to feel even more nauseous.

"Because I am" I reply monotonously

Nicole scheduled me to come on this late night talk show to vaguely promote the movie.

It is only early afternoon but I guess me coming in this early allows them enough time to edit said talk show footage later.

"I don't understand. Why are you so nervous?" Bea asks

The blue haired girl makes her way towards me, eventually stopping once she reaches the vanity that I am currently sat at.

"I just want to avoid accidentally spilling too much information about the movie" I try my best to lie

Bea immediately sees through my lie.

I would even go as far as to say she sees through it in record time.

"Mhm," my friend hums

"Now tell me what the real reason is" she says

I glance over to her.

One of the first things I notice being her serious facial expression.

I am unable to look at her long, my eyes snapping back towards the surface of the vanity as a way to avoid her penetrating gaze.

I slowly take in a deep breath to try and help calm my nerves.

Just tell her, Delaney.

I am sure that she would understand.

I open my mouth to tell my blue haired friend only to be interrupted by a firm knock on the opened dressing room door.

"Sorry to interrupt," the person rushes out

They do not sound very sorry judging by the tone of their voice.

I do not blame them considering the fact that they have a job to do.

If anything I am surprised that they are not irritated by my possible tardiness.

"They're ready for you" they tell me

I nod my head with understanding.

Bea helps me climb down from the large chair that I was sat in.

Bea waits until I am completely upright on the ground to hook her arm with mine, leading us out of the dressing room.

"You got this, just take deep breaths" she whispers near my ear

I silently nod my head at her as the two of us follow the backstage worker.

The two of us remain a few steps behind the worker as to not accidentally step on the back of their shoes.

That could ruin a person's entire day itself.

It does not take us long at all to reach the stage.

The worker stops beside an 'X' on the ground that is strategically placed behind a black curtain, a few feet away from the visible part of the stage.

The worker waits until I am on the 'X' to produce a mic and mic pack practically out of thin air.

They waste no time, clipping the actual miniature mic part onto the collar of my shirt.

As for the mic pack they clip it onto the back of my skirt, turning it on once they are satisfied with its placement.

"You'll walk out after she introduces you" they mutter underneath their breath before walking off in the direction of the dressing rooms

I release a deep exhale before following it with an equally as deep inhale.

I repeat this a few times to help with my nausea.

You are going to be fine, Delaney.

Just be vague.

Do not mention any details about the plot or characters.

I mentally groan at this.

What can I even say about this movie?!

I wish that they would have given me a template or outline of what I am allowed to say.

That would help me tremendously.

"You're on in five, four, three, two-" I hear the cameraman's faint voice call out

As he reaches one the sound of prerecorded clapping goes off.

This is interesting considering there is a literal crowd of people behind him.

"And we're back," the host begins

My hands become uncomfortably sweaty due to my nerves.

Bea notices this and uses one of her hands to rub my arm.

Her attempt at comforting me.

"Our next guest is currently killing it in the music industry and is even starring in a movie scheduled to release sometime next year," the host introduces me

"Please welcome Delaney Carson!" She calls out

The studio audience erupts into loud applause which thankfully drowns out Bea's voice from the mic.

"You got this" Bea whispers near my ear so that I can actually hear her

The blue haired girl waits until I nod my head to release her grasp on my arm.

I inhale deeply as a last effort to calm my nerves before plastering a smile on my face.

As I make my way onto the stage I hear a few people attempt to yell things out at me but they are drowned out by the applause.

I turn to face said crowd, politely waving at them.

It takes me no longer than a few seconds to reach the small couch across from the host who is silently smiling at me.

Once I reach said couch I carefully take a seat on it, not wishing to accidentally flash someone.

The host has to physically make a motion with her hand to get everyone to quiet down.

"Hi Delaney, how are you?" She asks me as soon as everyone has quieted down

I continue to politely smile at her, feeling a bit more at ease than I did earlier.

"I am amazing, Marsha" I tell her

She nods her head at my answer.

"Thanks great!" She briefly comments

I notice her glance down at a small stack of index cards in her hands.

"First and foremost I have to ask about the movie," she playfully rolls her eyes

I lightly chuckle at her attempt at a joke.

"The question on everyone's mind is what the heck is this movie about?" She asks

The crowd cheers a little at this question.

An awkward laugh bubbles its way up my throat at this question.

How do I even answer this question?

I feel my heart begin to speed up in my chest at the feeling of my nerves intensifying.

I adjust my position on the couch so that my nails are digging into the tops of my thighs.

"Uhm-" I drawl out, trying to find an effective answer that does not give too much away

"Think of a traditional take on modern day royalty," I eventually come up with

I glance up at the host only to notice that she is giving me a confused facial expression.

Okay, I am going to have to simplify this a bit more.

"The best comparison I have is a modernized version of Romeo and Juliet" I shrug unable to come up with much else

Marsha instantly perks up at this information which quite honestly takes me by surprise.

"A modernized version of Romeo and Juliet?" She asks me

I silently nod my head, not understanding what she is leading towards.

The woman glances down at her index cards.

"I have here in my notes that you are starring alongside McKenna King, is that true?" She asks me

I nod my head at her.

"That is correct" I answer but it comes out a bit constrained

As if I had a child sitting on my chest.

The crowd goes crazy at my confirmation of my costar.

"So the two of you are going to be playing Romeo and Juliet?" She asks me

Marsha glances up from her flash cards to meet my eyes.

I furrow my eyebrows at her.

"Yes" I nod my head albeit being utterly confused

Is that so hard to believe?

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the two of you hated each other" she comments

I dig my nails even farther into the tops of my thighs at the feeling of my heart beating incredibly fast in my chest.

"We may have had a disagreement in the past, but the two of us are mature enough to put our differences aside for the sake of the movie" I smile

Marsha nods her head, choosing not to press me any harder.

"Since you mentioned Romeo and Juliet I'm assuming that it's a romantic movie?" She changes the topic direction

I adjust my position on the couch due to nervousness.

"It has...romantic elements" I unconvincingly lie

It is a full blown love story about two best friends who fall in love during a less than likely period of time.

Marsha nods her head.

She knows that I am lying but thankfully chooses to drop it.

"That is all the time that we have for today, thank you so much for coming on Delaney" Marsha smiles

I smile back at her.

"Thank you so much for inviting me" I reply

Marsha takes this time to turn around and face the camera.

"Our next guest just battled one of the most deadliest diseases known to mankind," Marsha hypes up the next guest

"We'll be back after the break" she smiles at the camera

The cameraman wastes no time after the words leave her mouth.

"And...we're out!" He calls out

Marsha and I both stand up from our respective seats.

"I can't wait to see you again, hopefully with your costar next time?" She teases me as she holds her hand out for me to shake

I laugh at her comment, not wanting to seem rude.

I place my hand in hers and shake it up and down.

"Who knows? Possibly" I shrug

I am the one to release our hold as I turn on my heel and make my way towards the area that I entered the stage.

Fuck!

I release a sigh of relief.

I cannot believe that I survived that!
