《Bastard》BASTARD: chapter ten

"Here we are," Raiden says as he moves to unlock the front door of the house.

"Finally," I reply with a slight scowl. The ride to his home had been anything but pleasant. The man didn't know when to shut up and was constantly staring at me with his creepy ass smile. He had tried to ask questions but after multiple attempts, he decided to switch tactics and began to talk about his pack instead.

My comment doesn't seem to affect him. If anything, his smile grows impossibly bigger as he pushes the front door open and steps to the side, allowing me to enter. As I look around the house, I can't help but raise my eyebrows in surprise.

I had expected Raiden to live somewhere in the heart of the pack, surrounded by people and his house to be suffocating with color. Instead, he lived quite far out and his house was primarily made up of more traditional colors.

"What's with that look?" Raiden asks, causing me to realize that he had been staring at me this whole time.

I shake my head. "It's a lot more toned down and isolated than I was expecting from you."

His brows furrow. "What do you mean?"

Looking him up and down, I shrug. "You seem like the guy who would live in an area where he's constantly surrounded by people."

Raiden smiles slightly before shrugging. "I do enjoy being around others, but sometimes you just need your own space, you know?"

My thoughts trail back to when I was living with Gray and how hard it was to find a moment away from him.

"Yeah, I know."

Not waiting for Raiden to reply, I continue to search around the house. It wasn't much and was pretty small. Like a lost puppy, Raiden trails behind me. When I'm finally done with my search, I turn to him and his eyes shine with excitement.

"So? What do you think?"

I shrug at his comment. It was like a normal house, there wasn't much that caught my attention as I explored. Except for one thing.

"Where will I be sleeping?"

There was only one bed in the house and I'll be damned if I have to share a bed with him.

The question causes Raiden to blink twice in confusion. "Well seeing as there's only one bed, you can just sh—"

"—I'll just sleep on the couch," I reply through gritted teeth. I didn't plan on staying long anyways. When there's an open opportunity, I'll run away. Only this time I'll make sure I'm prepared.

"You don't have to do that," Raiden protests.

"I'm not sharing a bed with you Raiden," I say with a glare.

He frowns. "Then I'll sleep on the couch," he says, stubbornly.

"I've made my decision," I retort. The last thing I wanted to do was sleep in his bed, in his room, surrounded by his possessions.

Raiden glares back at me and the two of us stand there, both waiting for the other to crack. I watch as a flurry of emotions passes through his eyes until they finally land on mine.

His frown grows, a big change from his grinch-like smile, and he sighs. "Fine."

Turning away from him, I take a seat on the couch. Raiden remains in the same spot, sulking for a few minutes before he shakes his head and takes a seat beside me. Giving him a slight glare, he seems to catch the message, and instead, he moves to the chair opposite the couch and takes a seat.

"Are you hungry?" He asks.

Since I had arrived, I hadn't thought about it but now that he had mentioned it, I was hungry and thirsty. Instead of saying this, I shook my head.

"I'm fine."

Raiden seems to doubt my words, his mouth opens to protest but before any words escape, the sound of my stomach growling echoes through the room. Raiden stares at me with an amused grin which only causes my glare to harden.

"I'll make you something," he says and before I can argue, he's already moving toward the kitchen.

"I'm not the best cook, but I promise it'll be edible," he not-so-convincingly assures me. "You're not allergic to anything right? Is there anything in particular that you don't like?" He turns back with that same excited glint as before.

"Anything works," I tell the overly-excited puppy with a sigh.

He smiles one last time before turning back around and digging through the fridge.

I swear if he was in his wolf form his tail would be wagging.

"If you want to watch something, the remote should be on the table," he says.

I stare at him for a few more minutes before turning around and grabbing the remote. Pressing the button, the TV lights up and a random channel turns on. I don't bother trying to change it. It's not as if I know any good shows to put on anyways. I had a TV back when I stayed with Gray and Quinn, but I rarely used it and when I did I just left it on whatever channel it was.

Raiden hums as begins to cook and I find my eyes constantly glancing back at him. For someone who claims to not cook a lot, he seems to have a pretty good understanding of what's in the kitchen. The show plays in the background, but I can't seem to turn my attention away from him.

Once he's done, Raiden places whatever he had been cooking in the oven and turns towards me. I find myself turning away from him and hearing him laugh to himself. He then returns to his chair and turns to the TV and his eyebrows raise.

"What's with that look?" I mimic his question from earlier.

Raiden shakes his head. "You don't seem like the type of person to be interested in the office."

I shrug at his words but don't say anything. The two of us sit in silence as we focus on the TV. Raiden definitely is enjoying the show more than I am. I occasionally find myself glancing over at him and paying attention to the way his eyes widen with fascination, or the way he smiles slightly when something he deems funny happens.

It's only when the timer on his phone goes off that he tears his attention away from the show and stands up. I hear him move to the kitchen and grab plates before turning the oven off and retrieving the food. A few minutes later, he returns with a plate of chicken and corn.

He hands it to me but doesn't move. "Go on, try it," he encourages.

I eye the food warily. "Are you sure this won't kill me?" Raiden nods and I sigh before tearing off a piece of the chicken and taking a bite. He stands there patiently, waiting for my reaction.

"Well?" He asks once I swallow it.

I shrug. "It's edible like you said."

Taking my comment as some big compliment, Raiden grins before taking a seat in his chair once again.

Truth be told, I wasn't used to all of his energy. Back at my old pack, there weren't any people like Raiden. The closes one would be Foster and even then, the way Raiden acted didn't feel the same. In the short time that I've known him, I could tell that it would be hard to find a chance to get away from him. The man was like a giant puppy, he was easily excitable, but that didn't mean that he didn't pay attention. If anything, he seemed like the overly observant type.

Glancing up, I catch Raiden's eye and he shoots me a smile. I mentally sigh to myself and take another bite of the food.

It wasn't going to be easy to find an opportunity to escape.
