I never wanted to be me-

I wanted to be something more.

Than those that might come after me,

And those that came before.

I never liked what I always saw

When I looked in the mirror each day,

So I made the choice to change

Even in just a minor way.

I started off real small,

Just a difference here and there,

But suddenly it became my life

And I didn't even care.

Day by day, I schemed and stole

Everything that I ever wanted.

Unbounded by any laws,

Nothing made me daunted.

But that all stopped one day

When the crimes came knocking.

Police were standing at my door

And what I saw was shocking.

The disguise I made to be something else

Wouldn't come off me just like that.

It was now a whole part of me

Even in the cell that I sat.

I thought each and every day

Why did I act so strange?

The only thing that came to me:

I thought I could've changed.

I never wanted to be me,

But maybe that's the best I'll ever be.
