《Believing In Fairytales》Chapter One: The First Day
Advertisement
The sound was loud, obnoxious, irritating and quite unbearable. Without lifting my head from my comfortable duvet I smack the snooze button on my alarm clock. I'm glad it's Tuesday because I usually don't have to go into work as early as the other days. I snuggle my head back into the duvet and try to drift back into sleep. Another loud and obnoxious sound reaches my eardrums and prevents me from drifting off into sleep. Without opening my eyes I grab my phone off my nightstand and answer it.
"Who is this?" I ask in my unattractive and raspy morning voice.
"Reg, it's Em and I always wake you up. You never get up with your alarm clock and I would like for you to keep your job." She retorts with a laugh at the end.
"I don't know what I would do without you." I say as I finally open my eyes. I pull back the duvet and sit up on my bed. "I'm awake now so I believe that your job is done."
"Whatever, can you meet me at the coffee shop?" She excitedly ask me.
"Sure, see you soon." I say and I hang up the phone. I stretch my arms over my head and let out a long yawn. I glance out the window of my balcony and look at the city. The sunrise was gorgeous in the various hues of orange, red and yellow. I yawn again and walk into the bathroom.
I stare into the mirror hanging above the sink. My bed head is completely uncontrollable, the dried saliva clung to my face and my makeup from yesterday makes me look like a raccoon. I vigorously wash my unsightly face. Looking ten times better I shed my nightwear and take a shower. I don't even attempt to wash my hair because I'm not in the mood.
After my shower I walk into my large closet. I quickly scan over all the clothes I have. Due to my unhealthy shopping habits it takes me a long time to find the perfect outfit. I walk back into my room with the articles of clothing. I quickly dress in the blue blouse and black pencil skirt I picked out. Once I was done getting dressed I grab my purse and walk into my living room.
I drop my purse onto the couch and walk towards the kitchen. I usually don't eat breakfast but I am practically starving right now. I grab a banana from the fruit bowl and I sit at the counter as I switch on the news. Nothing interesting has happened lately and I flick through the channels. I check the time and it's 7:30. I throw out my garbage and put on my heels that I left by the couch last night. I grab my purse and head out the door making sure to grab my favorite blazer from the coat rack.
I walk into the elevator and press the lobby button. I've lived in this apartment for about two years and it's amazing. The view I get from my apartment is glorious and the rent isn't too hard on my teacher salary. The elevator dings as it opens up to the ground floor. I swiftly walk through the lobby. On my way out the building I say good morning to the door man.

The streets of New York are always crowded. Surprisingly today no one has managed to bump into me. I walked down about ten blocks until I reached Culture Espresso. I walked into the doors and spotted Emma in our usual spot. She looked up from her book and waved at me. I walked over to our table and sat across from her.
"Since when did you read?" I ask as I grab the book from her hand.
"Well hello to you too and it's just a book that I was planning on doing a play of. It's really interesting if you want to read it."
"No thanks I'm too busy to read." I say as I hand her the book. I take a sip of the coffee that she ordered me.
"Oh yeah, I forgot about your busy life with your imaginary boyfriend and your fully packed schedule. There's this guy I know and you would really like him if you're interested."
"Why are you so mean to me? Why are you always trying to set me up. I am completely content with my life for now."
"I'm only mean because I'm your best friend. I have the right to treat you like crap for no particular reason what so ever." She says and I laugh. "You should really get back out there. You're a really great woman and your beautiful, well sometimes." She continues and I kick her leg from under the table and she yells a loud ow.
"I didn't ask for you candor. Can we just change the subject? How is Killian and Henry doing?" I ask as I take a bite of her scone. She snatches it back and places it on her plate.
"Killian is going on another sailing trip with his friends and Henry is being a difficult teenager. Life is as it should be. How have you been?"
"I've been doing well lately except for the fact that my mother won't leave me alone. She is always calling and trying to set me up with her friends sons. Honestly I get enough of it from you and I don't need it from her."
"Great minds think alike and they think you are a lonely and uptight person."
"I am far from uptight!" I yell at her.
"When was the last time you had sex?" She says causing me to choke on my coffee. "It's probably been years if I have to say." She says and takes a sip of her tea.
"I hate you sometimes." I say then I glance at my watch and the time reads 8:10. I grab my purse from the back of the chair.
"You love me because I never lie to you. Now, go have fun terrorizing innocent children you Nazi." She says waving me off and I laugh as I stand from my chair.
"Bye Em." I say as I exit the café.
I walk out onto the now busy streets of the city. I silently laugh to myself thinking about the nickname my students gave me. They've always call me "The Nazi" because I'm strict and uptight. I am although passionate about my job as an English teacher.

I soon reach the school and I walk up the stairs towards the doors. I push open the doors to the usual morning chaos. This is honestly one of the reasons why I wanted to work in a high school. Everyday brings uncertainty and each day is never the same.
I walk down the hallway towards my classroom. I managed to get here without being attacked with students asking where a class was. I manage to find my keys in my cluttered purse and open the door.
I walk in my classroom and drop my purse on my desk. I sit in my all too comfortable chair and glance at the room filled with desks. I've always kept posters of my favorite quotes on the wall and Emma always put up the posters to their drama productions right next to them.
My thoughts are interrupted by a knock on my door. My classes don't start this early so I instantly knew it was Mary. I motioned for her to come in and she pranced in the room and sat beside me.
"Hey Reg how's the first day going?" She asks in her all too preppy voice.
"Considering I haven't talked to any miscreants it's going pretty good." I say as I turn on my computer.
"They're not that bad. They are like miniature people who have no idea what they are doing. You shouldn't be complaining you get all the smart kids." She says as she gracefully folds her arms across her chest.
"Although this is true I still don't like them. I just don't know how you have the patience to teach them how to do art."
"Honestly it's a lovely gift. So, are you going to come by David's office today?"
Mary's husband David is my best friend who happens to be a lawyer. Luckily he was here to help sue the crazy person who hit my car in a parking lot. I couldn't even move my back at all for weeks.
"Yeah, I will go during my lunch break. Come with me?" I ask her and she instantly nods her head. Her black shoulder length curls moving slightly.
"I'll see you later. Have a great day!" She says and she practically bounces out the room. This is going to be a long day.
*****
Finally it's my lunch break and I can get a break from these idiots. Although I was impressed by one student who gave me an impressive oral report on The Iliad. Henry is in one of my classes and I will gladly take the chance to embarrass him in front of his friends.
Now I'm in the car on my way to the firm that David works at. Mary is driving like a lunatic and I wonder how she hasn't gotten into a car accident yet.
"Asshole!" Mary yells out the window as someone cuts her off. I start laughing at her because she isn't one to curse and it sounds funny coming out of her mouth.
"Shut up Regina." She mumbles under her breath as she pulls up into the parking lot. As many times as I've been at the Locksley Law Firm I have never met the mysterious owner.
I follow Mary out the car and inside the air conditioned building. We walk towards David's office. Mary went off somewhere to do god knows what. I open the door and walk into David's office and I immediately collide with someone.
Papers fly up into the air and land all over the floor. I instantly bend down to pick them up. As I try to gather all the papers a hand brushes over mine and send electricity down my spine. I look up to see an unfamiliar pair of blue eyes.
"I'll get them." He says and his accented voice is making me weak at the knees. I stand back up and try to casually lean against the door as I take him in.
He is at least six inches taller than me. He has gorgeous dirty blonde hair and his muscles are clearly showing through his suit. At the angle I'm at I can tell he has a very nice ass. Did I really just think that?
"I'm sorry milady that was clearly my fault." The handsome man says as he stands up.
"Um, no it was my fault I wasn't expecting anyone to be there." I say trying to remain calm.
"I'm Robin and it's very nice to meet such a beautiful woman like yourself." He says and he extends a hand for me to shake. Blood starts to rush to me cheeks due to his flattering compliment.
"I'm Regina." I simply say and I shake his hand. He moves behind me and heads for the door.
"I like this one Davey. We should see her around more often. Bye Regina." He says and he disappears from the room. I sit across from David at his desk.
"Who was that Davey?" I say trying not to laugh.
"That's my boss and never call me that. Where's my wife?"
"That's Robin Locksley? He looks different then what I imagined."
"No, absolutely not. You will not have a relationship with my boss and then get me fired."
"Don't worry Davey." I say in a baby voice. He throws a pen at me and I instinctively duck and the pen hits Mary in the face.
"Well hello to you too." Mary says as she grabs her forehead in pain. David rushes over to her and asks if anything was wrong.
"Look at Prince Charming always helping the damsel in distress." I say mostly to myself.
"What were you guys talking about?" Mary asks as she sits next to me and David sits back in his seat.
"We were talking about how I can't have a relationship with his extremely attractive boss." I explain to her.
"I think that you should give it a shot. He seems just your type and you guys would be perfect together." She says as she holds my hand.
"I honestly doubt it."
