《Foster Brothers | COMPLETED》Ch. 37 - Squirrels & Talks

I flipped to the next page of a book I'm reading as I heard Lisa downstairs cooking dinner. The boys went to the basketball court a couple of minutes away from here.

It's Thursday; the day before Lisa and I's flight to Florida. I shut my book, and I sighed. Then a knock on my door surprised me.

Brent was out with his family for dinner tonight so I wasn't expecting anybody. If it was one of the boys, they would have barged in here not knock.

"Campbell?" Madison's voice asked, knocking softly on the door again.

"Come in," I said before the door opened to reveal a teared eyed Madison. She was in sweatpants and a sweatshirt so something is definitely wrong.

"What's wrong, Mads?" I asked her as she shut the door.

She sat down on my bed beside me before saying,"My parents put our house up for sale this afternoon."

Tears rolled down her cheeks, and I gave her a side hug.

"I just thought that there was a slight chance we wouldn't move. That some miracle would happen and we could stay right here in Midville. But today they made it official; we are actually moving," she continued, wiping her cheeks.

"Hey, I understand. When I had to move from Florida to California, I had to start all over. Then I had to move from California to West Virginia, and I met a lot of amazing people," I told her.

"I know that it's not the end of the world, but I don't want to leave Gavin or you or the girls. And long distance is so hard on relationships that I'm scared Gavin and I won't work out."

"Hey, if anybody can do long distance, it would be you and Gavin. Things might seem awful right now, but things will get better. And, yes, there is probably going to be some bumps in the road, but you can't give up," I told her as she nodded.

"You're right. You know, Nichole texted me earlier asking me why was there a for sale sign in my front yard. I didn't text her back, but I have to tell them today," Madison said, playing with her fingers.

"Madison, they will understand and we all will be there for you until your last step in Midville."

She smiled at me,"And this is why I came to talk to you. You are so understanding and kind."

"You can come to me if you ever need somebody to talk to," I said, truthfully.

"Thank you," Madison thanked me.

"Anytime," I replied.

Her phone went off, and she looked at her device. "My mom is waiting outside for me. I got to go. Bye, Campbell, and good luck this weekend."

She gave me a hug,"Bye, Madison. I'll see you Sunday."

Madison waved at me before leaving my room. I waved back before the door shut leaving me by myself.

I already packed my stuff for Florida so I really don't have anything to do besides watch a movie or read a book.

"Campbell! Can you come here please?!" Lisa yelled from downstairs.

"Coming!" I replied, walking out of my room.

I walked downstairs and to the kitchen where Lisa was at. When I walked in the kitchen, Lisa was putting a chicken pot pie in the oven. She shut the oven before turning around to face me.

"You have everything packed?" Lisa asked.

I nodded,"I finished packing earlier."

"Good. Can you do me a huge favor?" She asked me.

"Sure, anything," I told her, sitting at the counter.

"Can you please take Winter for a walk? I have some paperwork to finish and she hasn't been on a walk in a couple of days," Lisa asked me.

I nodded,"I would love to."

She let out a relief sigh,"Thank you. Her leash is hanging by the door. We usually take her to the park. There is a trail there where we walk her. Just be back before 7:00."

"Will do," I said to Lisa before walking back upstairs to put my shoes on.

Since I was already dressed in jeans and a pastel yellow long sleeve shirt, I was ready to go.

I put my tennis shoes on my feet before grabbing my phone and my wallet. Then I headed downstairs, grabbing the leash before walking into the living room.

"You want to go on a walk, Winter? Come on," I said to Winter, who was laying on the couch, half asleep.

I clicked the leash on her collar, and she jumped off the couch onto the floor.

"We're leaving now!" I yelled, letting Lisa know that we are leaving.

"Alright. Have a nice walk," she replied before I walked out of the house with Winter.

I had my wallet wrapped around my wrist, and my other wrist had the leash wrapped around it. I held onto the leash as Winter started walking in front of me. Her white and gray coat shining brightly in the sunlight.

We walked for about ten minutes when I saw the park. Kids were playing on the playground, and parents were either sitting on the benches watching them, or helping them down slides.

I saw the sign beside a trail saying

I walk along the trail, leading to the woods. Winter sniffed every bush and tree we walked past. I laughed at her when she shook her head at a flower. She did her business while I looked at the beautiful flowers.

I wasn't planning on walking the whole two miles since it was almost 6:00. Winter and I will probably just walk for a few more minutes and turn back.

Winter stopped walking, and her head was turned to her left, sniffing the air.

I looked at her before saying,"What's wrong, Winter?" I asked her, kneeling next to her.

She looked at me then at the woods, lightly growling. I stood up, looking around the woods. My heart almost bursted out of my chest when a saw something move.

"Hello? If you're trying to scare me, it's not funny," I said, holding my ground.

Winter growled again at the dark green bush in front of us, making me slightly scared. I grabbed a stick from the ground, and I held it like a baseball bat.

I quietly walked around the bush, and a squirrel popped out of the bush, running past me. I screamed, losing my balance. I fell on the ground, and I saw the squirrel climb up a tree.

"Stupid squirrel," I mumbled, throwing the stick behind me.

Winter came around the bush, and she stood next to me, helping me get up. When I got up all the way, I brushed dirt off of the back of my pants.

"You ready to go home, Winter?" I asked her, walking back on the trail.

She walked beside me, and we were about five minutes from the opening when I heard a twig snap. Winter and I stopped walking, and I shook my head.

"It's probably another squirrel. I refuse to fall for that again," I said to myself before walking again.

It wasn't until I heard footsteps I stopped walking. Winter stopped walking too, and she barked. I turned around to see nothing behind us. I continued walking, slowly, and I heard the footsteps again.

Quickly, I spun around to see nothing. A squirrel walking doesn't sound like a person walking.

I looked at everything, and I didn't see anything. Next thing I knew, somebody grabbed my shoulder. I elbowed the person behind me in the gut, and I heard a familiar "Ow! Jesus, Cam!"

I turned around to see Gaberial holding his gut. Elliot and Gavin were behind him with wide eyes. Nick and Micheal were laughing their butt off next to them.

"I'm so sorry, Gaberial. I didn't know that it was you," I apologized.

"I will never sneak up on you ever again. I think you broke a rib," Gaberial said, standing up straight.

"Wait a minute, what are you guys doing here?" I asked them.

"The baseball court is is on the other side of the playground. We saw you and Winter walk in the woods," Elliot explained before taking a sip of water.

They were all were in sweats and a tank top or a t-shirt. I seriously don't know how they weren't freezing their behinds off.

"We finished playing basketball, and we figured that we would walk with you and Winter," Micheal added.

"We weren't trying to scare you. It was Gaberial's idea to sneak up on you," Gavin blamed his twin.

"That makes sense. Again sorry," I said to Gaberial who waved it off.

"I'm fine," he replied, taking a deep breath.

"Man, I can't wait to tell Hailey that you got elbowed in the ribs by a girl who is five times smaller than you," Nick said before laughing again.

Gaberial flipped Nick off, making the rest of us laugh.

"We should head home. You got an early flight to catch tomorrow," Elliot said, and all the boys nodded in agreement.

"Yay. Fun," I replied, sarcastically.

The boys and I started to walk back to the opening when Micheal asked me a question.

"Are you nervous about seeing your father?" He asked, catching everybody's attention.

I nodded,"Yeah."

"Why?" Micheal asked again.

"Micheal," Elliot said, but I shook my head.

"It's fine," I told Elliot before answering Micheal,"Well, the last time I saw my father, we were in court, and the judge declared that he was guilty. When he was getting handcuffed, he gave me this look.

Not a revenge look or anything like that, but it was like a disappointed and a sorry look. I guess he blamed me. If we didn't stop, then the guy would have never held us at gun point, and my father wouldn't have gone to jail."

"It's not your fault, you know," Nick said, looking back at me.

"I know, but I don't know if he agrees," I said, licking my lips.

"Well then he's a douche if he thinks that," Gavin said.

"That's why I'm nervous to see him again," I told them.

"Well we will be only one phone call away if anything happens," Gaberial reassured me.

"Thanks guys," I thanked them.

"No problem, sis," Nick said, slinging an arm over my shoulder.

We walked past the sign, and I turned one more time towards the trail. Something was just off there. Maybe it was my imagination. But I felt somebody watching me.

"You coming?" Elliot asked, bringing me out of my thoughts.

"Yep, let's go," I replied, jogging up to them.

Yeah I refuse to go back down that trail again.
