《Realm of Opportunity》2-21: The Alchemist

Suddenly, I hummed, picking up one of the small bags that Finn had given me. He said that it would drive away monsters... why?
"Is this deadly to monsters? Or just... foul?" I asked her randomly.
She wasn't shocked my my sudden question, and answered easily. "Just foul, I believe. They do not like the smell, and will stay away until it dissipates."
I nodded and inspected it, finding a mixture of Sulfur and Nitrogen, along with the calcium proteins of a dead life-form, and unactivated Magic Crystals.
I nodded and isolated the proteins, searching for DNA. I was rewarded with the DNA profile of a Human.
"Human DNA... I see. They don't like the scents of Death." I murmured, and placed an unactivated magic stone, as well as the explosive crystal from earlier, (a much smaller shard,) all into a small marble of thin Quartz. I separated the volatile ingredients, and then nodded, adding in the Sulfur, Nitrogen, and human DNA, condensed further than the bag.
Once I examined it, I decided the delivery could be a bit better, so I made it a smoke bomb easily. I made a second version, with a diluted form of Hallucinogenic Mushroom gas, with a larger shard of Explosive Crystal. I knew monsters could be affected by the effects of the gas, so it would be a confusion-based weapon.
The Third, and final version, I made entirely out of the Explosive Crystal, separated into sections that would mix upon delivery. I colored each of them differently, white for the monster Repellent, Blue for the Confusion gas, and red for the Explosive Crystals.
I made a small spring-loaded holster for my left thigh, like a bullet magazine or a PEZ dispenser, which would hold the marbles still, and also act as a Blast Charge, should I need it.
The entire back panel, armored thickly, would be separated Explosive Crystals, which I had upgraded even further with the Chemical composition of RDX. Ripping out the separating seal would activate it within six seconds.
I grinned at the finished creation, and set it on my left thigh, connecting it with my Armor. I hummed, looking at my Whip. "Is there a substance that makes Monsters Complacent?"
Riviera looked thoughtful. "I suppose the Pantry?" I blinked slowly, and she held out a small vial from her pocket. "Beast Tamers give it to their Monster Familiars as a treat of sorts. I actually brought it to give to you, but you seemed busy... what are you wanting with it?"
I gently took it, making sure not to touch her hand, and then hummed. "I want to make my Whip more useful..." I explained simply.
I took the blade at the end of the Whip into my hand, and slowly drilled a set of four holes into the end. I set, behind them, aerosol nozzle's, each with a different compound behind it.
The first held a mixture of the liquid from 'the Pantry', mixed liberally with the mushroom gas. This mixture of hallucination and pleasure would be almost exactly the same as what some Pimps did to their women, giving them tuberculosis pills to keep them calm and pliable.

Was it morally questionable to drug monsters? Probably. Did I really care? Not in the slightest.
The second held a combustible compound, which would ignite upon contact with the air, creating a flaming whip. Relatively simple. The Third held the Foul Repellent, to drive any monsters away from the wielder. The fourth I left empty, because I was looking for a poison that actually harmed all monsters.
I experimented with one of the small monsters, a small mouse with moth wings and eyes to match.
I found that electricity disrupted magic, and killed them in large enough doses, because it made their Magic Stones basically 'turn off'.
But what about a compound that did the same, Or close enough to not matter? Something that, according to the dosage, would inflict pain or death? I set about making a Electrically Charged compound, something that, when exposed to air, would electrify instantly, and to the same amounts every time.
I tried it out on the small monster, sprinkling a bit of the smoke-like substance on it, and it dissolved quickly. I nodded and inserted the compound into the forth nozzle, testing the delivery systems seamlessly.
Once I was satisfied, I retracted the Whip, and holstered it in my thigh holster. Then I created a fourth marble, silver in color, with this new compound, and added a column to my dispenser, evening it out.
I collected potions from around the camp as people came in, and after taking a sample of each, returned to my spot, and began crafting.
Each one was interestingly specific; some healed specific poisons, some healed specific curses, some simply healed everything, called 'Elixirs', and those were the most rare and expensive, I gathered.
Recreating the potions in small, single-dose jellybeans was actually rather easy. All I had to do was condense the potions, and taffy, and color code them.
I created a second case for them, with a longer board. It wouldn't need to be quick, so I made it like a dresser drawer, pulling out until only one inch remained. When a ball was removed, another fell down. To replace it, you simply placed it in the open slot at the top and back of the cover.
I set a color-code card that named each of them according to uses and severity, and then simply left it in the drivers seat of the wagon with the cage attached.
I fed the bull some scrap metal, and he seemed pleased by that arrangement, so I nodded and sat back down.
I tapped my foot swiftly, too excited to simply sit still, and though of things I could do to both help and amuse myself... until I saw the Hephaestus Familia Members doing repair work.
I grinned and approached them, asking if I could help, and was put to work enchanting swords and armor with durability. Not quite Durandal, because of how draining that was, but still a good thing to have. I threw myself into the work zealously, enjoying the simple actions.
---
Night slowly fell, and I returned to my campfire, whistling a happy tune, only to find it empty. I hummed and tracked where the people had went, concerned for their safety.

"I wonder where they all went off to like that...? Maybe some type of curse? Mind Control? That'd be bad, I suppose. All those crazy strong people under mind control... brr, That is scary." I followed the scents, and they all started to converge, though a few went off in random directions, it seemed.
Then I started to smell water, and my ears started to pick up the sounds of a waterfall, blocking most everything else out. I placed the cap of invisibility on my head, and continued on.
As I came closer, I became aware of eyes around me, though they weren't focused on me, and acted as if I didn't notice them.
I walked down the path, and suddenly came upon a scene right from a Roman porn movie. At least 80 women, all bathing in a lake with a waterfall, while ten or so stood watch.
I hummed, and several sets of fierce eyes turned towards me in a split second. I slowly stepped away, and then decided to take the correct and mature approach.
I moved behind a tree, removed my hat, and stepped into the open easily. "Before you react, ladies, I can say, with total honesty, it was and is not my intention to see you bathing. I was worried for your status, as you had all disappeared... have the men found their own bath, or are they the ones hiding in the trees, peeking?" I asked simply.
The weapon reacted in an impressive display of cohesive teamwork, each choosing a target amongst the trees, and waylaying it with rocks at full strength, while another set, who had finished bathing and were dressed already, started hunting the men down.
I sat on the bank and picked up a small, hand worn pebble that looked like a teardrop, and quietly began enchanting it with healing abilities. I tossed it into the center of the pool, and the water began glowing. With that, I stood, and walked away, whistling carelessly.
Back at camp, I realized that only a very few people were there. The main men from the Loki Familia, obviously fresh from a bath, (Bete's fur was still wet,) and myself.
I hummed a tune, and continued making potions. Once I realized that I was going to run out of space, I crafted an even bigger case, more of a Steamer Trunk, and began storing them in that way.
I realized, suddenly, something rather interesting. "I can attach enchantments to items... but what about magic?" I said softly.
"Like magic swords?" Riviera asked, sitting down across from me primly.
"Is it the same? I'm talking about 1-shot magic. Like, a pill, with an attached healing spell, or an arrow with a lightning spell." I clarified.
She nodded. "Yes, those are items that not even the Loki Familia gets lightly. They are rather expensive, even by our standards."
I hummed and filled a Quartz crystal with magic stone, then enchanted it with an actual spell, a flash cast of Fulminate. "Does this seem like what you're thinking of?" I asked.
She blinked slowly, and then nodded silently.
"Hmm..." I nodded, and tossed it to Bete. "Crush that and brace yourself." I said simply.
"Like thi-." Lightning arced over his body, and he growled softly, at his fluffed fur, with static electricity running through it.
I nodded. "Alright, well, it works." Then I looked at Riviera. "Which ones would this Familia be most comfortable using?" I asked.
She smiled a bit, or maybe the light from the campfire just made it look like it. "Lightning arrows and Fire magic swords are the most common."
"And the least common? They would be the most valuable, correct?" I asked.
"Correct... I suppose if you could make a Titan Hammer, Garrett or one of the dwarves could make use of it, as well as Lightning daggers, for the Amazons." She opened a small book, setting half-moon spectacles on her nose.
"Titan Hammer? Is that a Gravity Spell?" I asked. She nodded without looking up. I hummed and looked at Garrett. "Do you have a Spare hammer I could turn into a Titan Hammer?"
He readily handed me a thick hammer made of a white metal.
I placed it on my knees, and began enchanting it carefully with a flash cast of Atlas, as a increased Gravitational anomaly on any one target, completely ignoring anything else except that target, even if it touched something else, until the target died. If the target was inanimate, the effects would last five minutes.
Then I changed the look of the hammer. If it was going to become a Titan, it would damn-well look the part. Each half became the visage of a Golden-Skinned Dwarf, wearing a silver and gold helmet.
I tossed it to him carelessly, and he caught it, gingerly swinging it to test the weight distribution. "Good?" I asked simply.
He grinned. "Oh aye, ye did a good bit o' magicking on this hammer, I can feel it. Thank you, boy."
I nodded and picked up a long two handed sword, examining it, and decided to make it a Lightning Sword.
I made sure to enchant it with a permanent Lightning cast, and so long as someone was providing it magic, it would make lightning and flames over the whole blade, hotter than the center of the sun. The guard on the handle included a circumstantial Aegis, which protected the wielder from the heat of the sword.
Overall, it's look was substandard, and ragged, but I was sure I'd do better the second time around.
Unlike a Magic Sword that stored its own magic, and would break once drained, this was a Mage's weapon. A large amount of Mana was required to ignite it for any large amount of time, and most adventurers without magic wouldn't have that.
I handed it, handle first, to Johnny, and he raised an eyebrow, but gripped it. "Got a nice heft to it..." He nodded, then gripped it harder, making lightning dance along the edge. "Oh, interesting." He grinned and gave it back, then went back to his book of puzzles.
Soon, the lights started to dim, and I settled in for my watch.

Journeys in the Fairworld: The Gatekeeper
Lindsey Fluger was only slightly past eighteen. There was nothing particularly special about her, save that she happened to be the right person at the right time. When Lindsey is asked to join an expedition to another world she makes the mistake of saying yes, plunging herself into a sea of perilous adventure and dark intrigue. Journeys in the Fairworld is a fantasy anthology series set in The Fairworld, a magical realm existing in parallel with our own world which is governed by a group elfin beings known only as “The Good Folk”.
