《The Roommate: A Mathew Barzal Fanfiction》34. Jade

The night after my mom and I talked in the kitchen, I officially texted Mat for the first time since we broke up. And texted him thank you for giving me and my mom a ride because I forgot to thank him.
We even exchanged few texts since then but we only talked about important things, which is only about my niece's christening. I seriously want him to call me and stay up all night talking nonsense things but, as what he have said he wanted to take things slow. Or start as friends or whatever.
He's basically giving me more time and space, however, it is only my brain who says I need more time but my heart? Absolutely not. But I want to see Mat's efforts in truly winning me back though.
When we we're just starting, I said that I want to take things slow but I didn't kept my word because that's just how hard I fell for him. Honestly, I foresee myself doing the same thing now. But I don't know, we'll figure it out soon.
I reach for my phone on the night stand-- morning ritual. It's already past six in the morning, usually at this time I'm already cleaning up the apartment for some sort of workout or maybe I'm already running on the treadmill back in Tori's house because it's Saturday.
However, I kinda feel off today. I put the phone back again on my night stand and stretched my body hardly as I yawn. I slowly throw myself out of the bed and head to the bathroom when I heard voices outside.
It's my mom's voice, and she seems like talking to a guy. Does she have any visitors that she didn't tell me? Maybe it's Collins but it's weird because I didn't received any heads up from him.

Oh well, it's Baby Andy's christening tomorrow so I guess I don't need any heads up. My mom and I are going to Lee's later and start preparing the whole house for the little party for baby Andy.
I quickly took a shower and changed into some baggy t-shirt and a biker shorts on. We'll do a lot of work today so I need something comfortable clothes to move around. As I put few beauty products on my face, my phone buzzes and it's Collins calling me.
He's helping us in decorating, that gay ass friend of mine loves Baby Andy and I'm absolutely surprised that Tori included him on the list of Andy's godparents-- or should I say, godmother! As what Collins calls himself. Honestly, I was completely opposed to it but Tori's decision and not mine.
"Yup?"
"You still in bed? Wake the fuck up girl and let's eat some breakfast. You're mom and I are starving already!" He said sounding like a teenager, he even sound like Bretman Rock if I'm honest. And I definitely know that if he talks like that he is on a great mood.
"One second." I said and hang up.
Few minutes later, I went out of my room and head to the kitchen. The two of them are already eating and enjoying a conversation when I walked in.
"--she'll cry I'm just gonna say it." Collins said.
"What are you guys talking about?" I asked as I joined them.
"Oh, we're talking about the christening. Am I right Collins?" My mom answered.
Collins nodded and changed the whole topic talking about his job right away.
Weird.
After we ate breakfast, we head straight away to Tori's house. On the way there, I've been noticing these two people with me exchanging glances and my mom seems really busy on her phone which is kind of weird.

I've been observing these two since breakfast and they are all acting weird and shit. Few moments passed and they still make me feel weird I finally snapped.
"Is there something I don't know about?" I asked adjusting on my seat just so I can face my mom who's seating at the back.
"What?" Collins asked.
"You guys are acting weird. Especially you mom, you're not busy on your phone like that." I commented.
"What are you talking about?" My mom said grinning widely. "I'm busy texting Tori about Baby Andy's outfit for tomorrow."
"I smell something fishy." I said and sat properly again.
Collins snickered. "Mrs. Kaufman what the hell is wrong with your daughter right now?"
"Indeed. What's wrong with you right now?" My mom agreed just in time Collins phone which he puts on the dashboard buzzes. His hand moved fast to pick it up but I am faster than him. I don't know! I just feel like picking it up in case they are hiding something from me.
It's Tori's name appearing on the caller I. D.. I answered and wait for Tori to speak first.
"Hey Collins, we're waiting where are you guys?"
"We're almost there." I answered.
"Jade?" Tori said and I heard several murmurs I couldn't even hear.
"Why do you sound so surprise?" I asked eyeing up Collins who's currently smiling.
"Nothing. Alright I'll see you soon." Tori said and hanged up.
"You guys are all weird." I commented handing Collins his phone. "Or maybe it's just me. I don't feel like moving any single muscle today." I said putting my hands on my temple and massages it.
When we arrive at the Lee's house, I was kind of surprised by way too many cars parked on their drive way.
"Misinformation?" I asked Collins and mom. "The christening is still tomorrow, right?"
"The team might as well planned to pay a visit to see Baby Andy today." Collins commented as he shakes his shoulders, the way he always does when he's about to get surrounded with cute boys.
I rolled me eyes.
"Come on, let's get inside." My mom said walking past through me.
When we walked inside the house, Collins was right. Majority of the guys in the Islanders team are all in the living room currently surrounding my niece.
Beau spotted me right away raising his hands for me to slap it. "Nice to see you again, Jadey! How are you?"
I still find his over-friendliness weird to be honest. Some of the guys I remembered hanging out back in Boston last December also said their hello's to me.
I also spotted Mat on the couch who slightly waved at me since he's currently carrying Andy which definitely looks so small between his arms.
I head straight to the patio where I saw Tori started decorating, my mom and Collins already started to shuffle around helping Tori out.
"I didn't know the team are visiting today." I said asking Tori.
"It was a surprise visit actually, some of them are leaving for vacations tomorrow and some are already going back to their hometowns." Tori answered. "Jade will you help Collins in the kitchen please? I need you guys to check the ingredients for the cupcake."
"Let's go girl." Collins said dragging me.
"Oh okay." I flinched. "I'm not that bad at baking that you have to drag me Collins.
He giggles. "Sorry."

A Nation of Distances (possibly a dystopian love story)
Michael lives in a toxic macho world with extreme male hierarchy. When he gets a weird rating that makes his place even more problematic he's forced to choose a fiancée at a Wife School, and he slowly discovers more about the other side of the great divide between the sexes in The Nation. If only the world would stop being so complicated... On the other side there's Megan, who's more interested in books than in marriage, and the unpredictable Eliza who seems to have a connection with Micheal already. Will they be able to cross the distance and become friends against all the rules of their own world, or will they just be crushed? Are positive relationships between men and women even possible? And is there a way to change the world or is that just a naive thought of a silly wimp? 'A Nation of Distances' is a slightly dystopian dialogue-heavy drama set in a low sci-fi future setting about the war between the sexes, disconnect and friendship. The genre will fluctuate in between more slice-of-life parts and soft sci-fi drama with possible romantic elements, with alternating lead and switching perspectives once more of the main characters are established. Content Warning: Certain concepts and scenes might be disturbing and/or triggering to some, even though the story itself won't be extremely heavy most of the time. Sexism as a double-edged sword destructive to both sexes is an important part of the story, but so is friendship.Note that all descriptions of persons and places are purely fictional and made up by the writer, and any resemblance with anything in the real world is a coincidence, since the real world is not supposed to be dystopian anyway!

The Epiphany Colony
Brad Asher has been a private detective on the Epiphany Colony orbiting Mars for about a year before stumbling into a conspiracy that threatens the safety and stability of the colony. Note that the story here is the first draft and has a lot of ideas, characters, and plotlines that I ended up dropping in the final version that I released here currently available on Kindle Unlimited. The entire second half was restructured, as I ended up not being satisfied with some of the things that I introduced and felt like it had strayed too far from my initial vision of a space-based detective noir story.
