New Year's Eve

As I step out from the Wagner Law Firm building, the cold December air embraced me giving me chills. I used to treat the New Year's eve as a normal day and used to spend it inside my apartment sipping a glass of wine while looking at the fireworks on the window when the clock strikes twelve.

But this year, I'm going to spend it with Mat. He told me earlier today that he'll bring me somewhere special to go welcome the new year. I don't know if I should feel anxious about it but I hope there's no crowd involved or else I'd totally freak out and act crazy in front of him again just like what I did in Boston few weeks ago.

That was so embarrassing even if I would say that that night ended pretty well so I should never complain. However, I still regret that I overreacted in front of him. I should never get jealous because he is my boyfriend, he proves to me that I can trust him every single day.

When I arrived home, Mat immediately ordered me to go change into something that can actually make me feel warmer. He even grab a biege mitten and a bonnet on one of my drawers in there helping me to put it all like it's as if I am a five year old who absolutely needs assistance.

"Where are you really taking me?" I asked staring at him as he helps me put a scarf on my neck.

"Somewhere cold." He replied kissing me on my cheeks.

"Obviously, or else I won't be dressed up like this!" I said rolling my eyes.

I am literally wearing three layers of clothing. I am wearing a turtle neck sweatshirt, topped with a shirt and parka.

"You sure you are warm enough?" Mat asked as he grabs his car key and bonnet.

"I'm used to this kind of weather Mat." I replied as we walked down the stairs. "Where the hell are you taking me? Seriously."

"It's a surprise." He said smiling at me and I couldn't help myself from kissing him since he's been so gentle and clingy with me these past few days eversince I came back.

I understand that he misses me a lot and eversince we became official this is the first time we spent a whole entire week together. In the next few weeks he'll be away for months if their team will make it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

He broke the kiss abruptly while chuckling. "Alright. Save that for later baby. We're going to be late."

Few seconds later, we hit the road. I absolutely don't have any idea where he will take me. I have been questioning him in the past twenty-four hours about that but he refuses to answer me, he only grins on me and says it's a surprise.

"D'you know what Barzy," I started when I finally couldn't take it any longer. "If your surprise is a dinner date then I won't surely be surprised."

"And why is that?" He asked concentrating on the road.

"Because I have been into dinner date a lot of times before and-- oh shit! No. We're not certainly going on a fancy date because of what I am wearing right now." I turned to him this time. "So where are you exactly taking me Barzy? To the park? Somewhere public or something? Ice rink? Dude we can't do that. You'll get recognized."

He snickered. "You're mumbling a lot!"

"Because you're giving me vague answers!" I complained.

"So I'm guessing you're not keen of surprises, aren't you?"

I nodded. "I mean I love being surprised but don't give me an it's a surprise answer, because I'll end up overthinking."

"I see." He said stopping the car and I just realized we just pulled up in front of a random hotel downtown. I'm surprised there are only few people out here because it's the New Year's Eve, every rooftop of any building in New York is always filled people celebrating the new year. But these hotel in particular is not crowded and has zero trace of having any party upstairs.

"Babe, I think this hotel is closed." I told him as we walk around heading to the elevators.

"This is where your surprise is at." He answered guiding me.

"And what is it exactly?" I asked. "I swear to God Barzy, if you spend a hundred bucks just to surprise me I will surely kick your balls off!"

"You wouldn't do that." He said grinning widely at me.

"Well, I can!" I barked back.

"You can't. You don't want to risk our future babies."

He answered which made me laugh and somehow bothered. But I couldn't help but sigh the guiltiness I have been feeling, I hate fancy stuff and I hated it when someone spends way too much just for me.

"Mat you know I hate fancy stuff." I said in a serious tone this time.

"I know." He said lacing his arms around my waist as we head to the elevators. "I just did a couple of arrangements and that's just it--"

"I don't believe you."

"--and a couple of hundreds." He added which I ended up elbowing him on his stomach.

He flashes his crooked grin and pretends to rub his sore torso while he presses the button leading to the top floor.

As the elevator door closes he reached out and kissed me slowly. Slow enough for me to leave wanting for more.

He breaks the kiss and reached for his pocket. "Now wear this."

"Blindfold? Mathew Michael Paul Barzal!" I warned while chuckling since aside from the fact that I certainly didn't like the idea of him spending way too money just for this date, my boyfriend seems acting like a giddy teenager and it's really damn cute. "I swear, you have gone way too overboard. I am not wearing that!"

"Oh babe, come on! Don't spoil the moment. We're about to reach the top floor."

I only stared on him for a couple of seconds refusing to wear it, but he only stared back wearing a damn puppy eyes.

I sighed. "Whatever!" I said grabbing the blindfold and wore it.

As the elevator dings, Barzy guided me out holding me close to him.

"Are you going to take me to another world? Mount Olympus? Introduce me to the Olympian gods or something?"

"What the hell are you talking about?" He asked chuckling.

I groaned in frustration walking slowly as to where my man guides me. Few more frustrating steps and finally we stopped and I can certainly feel the cold breeze on my face.

"Now you can take it off." Mat says taking his hands off from me.

"I'm nervous." I confessed placing my hands on the blindfold not wanting to take it off.

I took a deep breath slowly removing the blindfold up, as I opened my eyes I certainly felt that my eyeballs just dropped on the ground in complete surprise by the set up on the building's roof top just in front of me.

The whole ground is covered with christmas lights filled with metallic balloons and on the middle is a table containing a bottle of champagne surrounded by pillows and fur comforters that serves as a seat overlooking the beautiful New York skyline and the Empire State Building itself lit up that switches into different colors every now and then.

"What do you think?" Mat asked but I didn't bothered to reply because I am still admiring the whole thing plus I couldn't literally find my voice right now.

He led me towards the table and let me sat on the pillows in there. When he settled next to me looking at my shocked face, he touched my chin and that's when I realized that a tears just came out of my eyes.

"Oh no. Don't cry." He said pulling me for a hug.

"I didn't know I was crying." I said but I am now completely letting all those water works flow as I hug Mat back.

"I've never ever been surprised like this before. I don't see myself as someone who will get surprised like this ever. I imagined this myself, but experiencing this in real life was seems so impossible." I added completely sobbing this time since I already can't help myself.

Mat releases me looking me straight to the eye as he wipes away my tears. "Are you kidding me? Baby, you're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen and you deserve all of this."

Those words even melt my heart causing me to cry again.

"Hush now." He said kissing me on the forehead. We stayed there for long until I'm able to calm down and plastered a smile.

"I'm fine now!" I said exhaling.

Mat smirked as he cupped my cheeks and looked straight to my eye.

"I love you Jade."

Those three words left me dumbfounded.

Those three damn words that I have been waiting to hear, he finally said it.

He finally said it!

It only took me few times to blink to process those words and I immediately jumped on my seat covering him with kisses letting him hit his back on the stack of pillows.

"What took you so long?" I said and kissed him again like there's no tomorrow.

"I love you too."
