《Covered Edges》Chapter 4

The next couple days pass by in a breeze. Surprisingly--but thankfully--Damon hasn't interacted with me once. He hasn't even made eye contact with me since that night. And I must say it's been quite peaceful.

It's Friday now, our last day of school before spring break. The students' eagerness is tangible in the air. There's only one topic of interest on the menu though: the big lake trip. When Eric said everyone is going, he really meant it.

Once again, 5th hour passes and Damon doesn't even breathe in my direction. I wonder why he's avoiding me. At first I think that it's what I said to him, but then again, he did reply in a way that would contradict my idea: "Don't test me, Scarlett."

I feel my neck where his lips had been, careful not to touch my hickey because I don't want to remove the layers of foundation I applied onto it. Luckily it's almost gone now; my throat should be completely clear by the time I leave for the lake Monday.

I finish my work and slouch back in my chair; only two more hours to go then freedom. I glance around the room, Mr. Garrison is busy typing on his computer, and the rest of the class is still working on our worksheet. I slowly turn my head and look back at Damon. He's already done with his work and fast asleep. How did he finish before me? I watch him sleep, and I bet you're waiting for me to say "Wow, he's so cute when he sleeps!" No. His mouth is half open and hanging. His arms are crossed over his chest while his head shifts slightly back then jerks forward. It repeats this over a few times, as if his head keeps trying to find a pillow but only encounters air. I bite my tongue to try to stifle my laughter. Luckily for me, the bell rings and everyone is making noise, because by then I was cracking up. It feels great to know Mr. Perfect has some flaws, besides his rotten personality.

After school is over I head home with Rachel. We spend the weekend shopping for the trip and browsing through Netflix. Finally, it's Sunday night and we're both too excited to sleep.

"I hope they have the inflatable trampoline set up on the lake!" Rachel says.

"Yeah, but at least out there nature will drown out your snoring," I snicker; we both laugh.

The next day, we pack everything into Rachel's car, I kiss my mom goodbye, and we head out. An hour later we arrive at our destination. I step out to stretch and look around. It really is beautiful; I love the lake. The tall green trees are clustered but allow tons of light to shine through. The sun glistens off the lake's surface, making it look like a bucket of glitter had been poured on top of it. The water is calm until a Jet Ski zooms past, spreading a ripple of waves.

The camp site is already packed; I recognize most of the people here from school. Many are throwing a football or kicking a soccer ball around. Others are merely lounging around and enjoying each other's company. Rachel and I collect our things and go find an open spot to set up. Once we have our tent up and air beds blown and arranged, we step outside and finally begin to relax.

We're sitting and talking with a group of friends from our school, when Eric runs up to me in his tribal tank and tan shorts.

"Red, come play some football!"

"Alright!"

I run after him and join the group. We break, and then I sprint out some and turn around. Curly-haired Thomas throws the ball in my direction and I begin to backpedal. The ball drops sharply and I catch it, but when I turn I run straight into somebody and fall to the ground. Before I look up to apologize, the stranger speaks.

"Still running into me huh, clutz?"

My eyes immediately shoot up as a look of horror crosses my face. Damon is standing before me, a smirk plastered on his face. He's wearing a black tank that exposes his cut arms, and dark blue jeans rolled slightly into capris that hover above his ankles. I stare, speechless. Why is he here? He said he had plans this week! I was looking forward to a nice lake retreat without any demonic intervention.

Eric runs up laughing, "Nice catch Red but even better block Damon. That was hilarious!"

I get to my feet and hand the ball to Eric.

"Hey, I forgot I need to help Rachel set up the fan, I need to go!"

I start to walk off, but before I know it Damon is at my side.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I ask.

"I cancelled my previous plans; I thought this would be so much more fun."

"This sucks."

"Oh c'mon White, we're going to have a great time!" He sneers at me, giving me a sinister smile.

I walk him into a nearby tree while spitting out, "Listen here Black, just keep your distance and we'll be good."

He looks surprised at first, and I feel satisfied; but, his expression darkens and his green eyes dance with fire.

Oh no.

I start to back up, but Damon grabs me and quickly spins me around, switching our positions. My back hits the tree, and Damon puts his hands onto the tree on either side of my head. His arms keep me boxed in as he leans in closer. My breathing stalls when his face pauses a few inches away. His eyes become hooded and he drops them while his lips brush against my jaw line. I tense. He drags his lips to my ear.

"How about you listen here, White," he whispers, "I'll do whatever I please, and you'll willingly comply."

"Dream on."

His hips dig into me. Almost his whole body is flush against me now. Damon removes one hand from the tree and starts tracing his pointer finger on me. He starts at the top of my neck and travels down to my collarbone, agonizingly slow. He draws little circles between my collarbones.

"What was that?" he asks seductively.

I don't reply; I'm petrified.

"I said...," his finger continues downward, and then tugs on the brim of my tank-top, pulling it down slightly, "What was that?"

"Yes, okay, we're going to have loads of fun together," I breathe, my words barely escaping me.

"Great, glad to see we're on the same page!"

He releases me and stalks off. I sink to the ground and I try to contemplate what just happened.
