《float with me | IT》-45-

I wasn't inside anymore.
I was standing alone in the middle of what I recognised as the Barrens, but it somehow felt unfamiliar to me. The greens were lusher, fragrances stronger, and there was no presence of litter or sign of inhabitants.
It was like I was in a fantasy world. I almost expected a fairy to pop out at me.
There was the sound of rushing water, much louder than the calm flow of the Kenduskeag Stream should have been. I moved in the direction it was coming from, pushing through foliage that at first looked like trees, but I soon realised were just very large ferns.
It was hot, too. Yes, it was the middle of summer, but this temperature was well above a hundred degrees Fahrenheit. My clothes stuck to my skin as I started to sweat. Even in the shade, I couldn't escape it.
I heard something thudding in the distance that sounded like an animal. A large one, though, because it had to be at least the size of an elephant to make such a noise.
And even the deers in Derry were small.
I looked around, trying to take in my surroundings. I could see where there quarry should have been, although it seemed much smaller, and where the thick white cylinder of the standpipe used to be.
Now, it was just an expanse of forest. There was no sign of any buildings or settlement, just endless expanses of the strange vegetation.
There was a loud flapping overhead and I ducked my head out of instinct. As I looked up, what looked like an eagle the size of a cow flew past. Its large beak was a bright yellow and hooked, and I could tell it didn't feed on plants.
As I got closer and closer to the rushing of water, a mist started to appear on the ground. At first, it looked as if it was a trick of the light. But now, a thick sheet covered the space beneath my knees and I had to take extra care with my footing.

Finally, I reached the spot where the fog and ground disappeared at the same time.
What used to be the calm stream of the Barrens was now a fully fledged river. Water rushed and boiled so rapidly I knew you'd need a bridge to cross it.
Suddenly, a silver fished leaped up in a beautiful arch of water before splashing back into the stream. There was never any signs of life in the brown sewerage water I had grown accustomed to.
The sound of flapping brought my attention away from the white water and to the sky, where birds flapped away from their trees.
I'm not talking a few birds, I'm talking all of them.
Birds of all different colours spotted the sky and briefly, before they disappeared, it looked like static on a television.
Something was coming.
They weren't flying away for no reason. They could sense it. I could sense it.
More animals crashed through the forest away from the direction I was in. I wanted to follow them, but I knew I had to stay. I had to see what was going to happen.
The hairs on the back of my neck started to stand up and I wished someone was with me. Where had Mike, Richie, and the rest of the Losers gone to? Were they seeing what I was seeing?
This place was Derry, but different. As if humans hadn't appeared or crossed this part of earth yet, and Mother Nature's intention was still in its course.
I was in the ago. The same place I had always been, just what seemed to be a couple million years in the past. That was why everything looked so different, yet so familiar at the same time.
I looked around nervously, expecting to see a dinosaur pop its head out.

But the noise of everything had died down. I could hear no more animals, birds, or see any fish leaping out of the water. Even the river had seemed to slow down.
It was the calm before the storm.
Suddenly, there was a low vibration. It had no sound or words to describe it, but it was there, and it was growing.
It tickled my bones and eardrums. I leant against the tree for support, but I could feel the vibrations caught inside it. Steadily, it reached my toes and grew until my whole body was tingling.
It was coming from the sky and I couldn't help but look up.
The sun was so bright I had to squint my eyes shut and peek through my eyelashes. It was big, too, and it looked like it was getting bigger and bigger.
The sun was heading straight for me and I questioned whether this was the end of the world, rather than the beginning.
I put my arm up to shield myself from the light, but the heat seared into my flesh. There was no escape from what was coming. Nowhere to hide, nowhere to run. All I could do was stand and stare as it came for me.
As It came for me.
Everything clicked into place. I knew why I was here, and what I was seeing. It was the coming of It, of what would terrorise Derry in the years to come.
The clouds burst into flames as the ball of fire entered Earth's atmosphere.. The wind came and I was knocked backwards into the tree. It was hot and suffocating and it felt like the beginning of the end of the world.
Electricity sparked off of the molten coin which, now that it was closer, didn't look like a ball of fire at all. There were no words to describe what it was, but the closest would be something along the lines of spaceship.
If someone had asked me to tell them what I'd seen, that would be the word I'd use. But it wasn't, and it looked as if it came from a lot further away than any spaceship ever could. It would be an image forever burned into my mind that I could never illustrate through words or pictures.
There was an explosion - a roar of sound followed by a rolling tremor that knocked me to the ground. Smoke and flames billowed into the sky as another explosion came, followed by another.
Never in my life had I experience an emotion so hard in my life, and I knew I never would again.
I got to my feet and started to run, falling every time it hit the earth.
It was here.
It! It! It!
I kept running, pushing through the thick foliage while coughing my lungs out. The smoke was so thick I could barely see. All I knew was I that I had to get away.
The explosions were almost a rhythm now.
Baboom............ Baboom...............Baboom.............
It almost sounded as if it was calling my name.
Lara............. Lara.............. Lara...............
I felt something hard hit my cheek, and I fell to the ground.
"Lara, wake up!"

Long Shadow
No destiny, no choice, no hope. Our protagonist, a coward summoned to a world meant for heroes; a new world with new rules and old cruelties. Join him on his adventures as he must deal with menus, monsters, and mysteries in this litrpg fantasy. Thomas Goodwill was an average boy with an average life, all that changed when he woke up in a new reality. Now, out of his depth, damn near out of his mind, he must learn to survive in a game-like reality with no reloads, checkpoints, or save scumming. He does, however, have a drunk snake. Thank you for reading my first story, hopefully, the first of many to come. This will be my main story and is meant to help me practice and hone my skills as I slowly produce more complex ideas. It's a litrpg in which I want to only lightly focus on the mechanics as I don’t want to pad out the word count with math and number tables and while I want to add a few of my own twists here and there, overall I’m going to keep this story close to generic as possible so that I don't let my inexperience lead me into a corner. Thanks again to all willing to leave a review or some constructive criticism, without you I'd never improve. Unfortunately, Cover art is by me.
