《Lost Fantasy-Life After Reincarnation (Arc 1)》Chapter 48

The soft humming noise woken Loganel from his deep slumber, causing him to yawn and stretch his arms as he slowly opened his eyes which were filled with some tears from having to leave his sleep. He looked around at his surroundings, and he discovered that he was located in that same dark office room again, sitting on the floor and leaning on the desk that has the only computer that was turned on. Loganel turned his head and looked up at that young man, who appeared quite fatigued as the computer monitor reflected in his iris.
Loganel yawned once again as he brought his legs closer to his chest due to the cold temperature around him. He sat there staring out the window at the nighttime sky outside, feeling a sense of tranquility as he listened to the sound of the young man's fingers dancing across the keyboard and pressing the keys. He just sat there and listened to the tranquil melody as it slowly lulled him back to sleep. Loganel felt a peace of mind as the ambient noise soothed his soul, and slowly, he dozed off. Loganel was soon awaken once again, however, when the young man suddenly got up from his chair and started packing up his stuff.
"Are you leaving?" Loganel asked, but received no response from the man. "I forgot," Loganel sighed, "you can't hear me or see me..."
Loganel forced himself off from the floor and followed the young man to his destination. The two arrived before a set of metal doors and then they waited after the young man pressed a button with a downwards arrow on the wall. Not long after that, the door opened, revealing a small, brightly lit chamber that the two entered. On the wall to the right of the now closed door was a set of buttons with numbers on them. The young man pressed the button that had the letter one written on it and the two waited. Soon, the elevator made its way to the first floor and the two left the elevator.
Loganel then followed the young man as he walked towards the vestibule that led to the outside world. Once they left the building, Loganel was greeted by an empty street with streetlights illuminating the road. On the big road in the middle of the streets, metallic objects on wheels with bright headlights occasionally drove by, but Loganel and the young man walked on the elevated part of the concrete road that was separated from the road that the vehicles used with a small waist height fence designed in a way to be adequate while remaining stylish so as to not betray the visual appeal of the city street.
Loganel shivered as the cold night time air chilled his body. Whenever he exhaled, he could see small white clouds forming, which led to him concluding that it was winter time. This bothered Loganel, but it didn't distract him from observing his surroundings. He looked around, and was surprised to discover extremely tall buildings made out of concrete.
"What is this place?" Loganel huffed a breath of hot air into his hands as he shivered.
Soon, the young man had walked to a public transit station, entered through the opened doorway, past the ticket gates, and used the escalators to head up to the station platforms. Loganel followed him for this young man is the only person he knew. Soon, the two ended up waiting in an above ground platform with only a roof with no walls, which offered no protection from the cold nighttime breeze. However, an electric commute train soon arrived and made a quick stop at the station. The young man that Loganel had followed entered a train car, and Loganel followed after him. There were a few other people in this train car, and Loganel concluded that these people couldn't see him as well.

What is this thing?
Loganel stared out the windows and watched in surprise as the city outside passed by. There were more of those super tall buildings, and from the elevated railway, Loganel could see that for as far as the eyes could see, there were concrete buildings and roads sprawling into the horizon. Some of those buildings were short, but others were tall.
I've never seen anything like this.
Loganel sat down on the seat next to the young man who stared at the screen of a small device that fit into the man's hand. The young man swiped at the glass screen with his thumb, and the objects on the screen moved. Loganel peered over the man's shoulders and discovered that the young man was reading something that appears to be the news. Loganel looked up at the young man's face, and now with the illumination of the train car, he could discern his facial features. This young man had black hair like he does with dark brown eyes that appeared quite fatigued.
The young man sighed and allowed his right hand that held onto the small device slide down his office bag that he had placed on his lap. In addition, the young man allowed his head to lean back until it rested on the glass window behind him. Loganel, with nothing better to do, sat there and looked out the window at the beautiful city as he listened to the soft humming noise of the train car run along the elevated railway.
"We are now arriving in Mist Valley Station. Mist Valley Station. The door on the right will open." The speakers within the train car started broadcasting.
The train soon began to decelerate as it approached the station, and it came to a full stop as it arrived at the platforms. The young man forced himself out of his seat and exited from the opened door followed by Loganel. From there, Loganel followed the man as he descended from the escalators, placed his wallet on the small sensor on the ticket gate so as to make the gate open, and continued on out the station and out onto the nighttime streets once again. From there, the man took a right turn and began walking in the direction of an apartment complex that was about ten stories tall. The young man stopped by a convenience store, entered it, and exited it after buying something that appeared to be a pre-made meal box contained in a plastic bag. Then, the young man continued on in the direction of the apartment complex, and when he arrived there, walked up to the elevator in the apartment building and pressed for the eighth floor. From there, the young man walked over to one of the doors that lined the wall and took out his keys to unlock the door.
Is this where you live? Loganel wondered as he entered the young man's one bedroom apartment.
Upon entering, the young man walked past the small door to his right that was the bathroom and proceeded to throw his bag on the floor by his bed which was up against the window on the left side of the room, placed the plastic bag containing his food onto the small table in the middle of the room, and allowed his body to fall onto his bed. Loganel followed after the man and was shocked when he discovered how messy the young man's room was. Loganel had to carefully pick places to step so as to not disturb the numerous piles of magazines and video game disk boxes. Loganel peered over to the small opened doorway to his right that led to the small kitchen. Inside the small kitchen, plastic bags filled with aluminum cans were placed on the counter, and bags filled with trash were tied and set on the floor.

"What the hell?" Loganel muttered as he looked around the messy room that was illuminated by the ceiling light. He was genuinely surprised since the young man did not appear to be someone that would tolerate such a messy living environment, for the man appeared quite tidy in appearance.
Loganel's attention was caught by the young man who slowly got up from his bed and walked over to the kitchen kitchen and took out a few cans of beer and set it on the small table. He then sat down on the carpeted floor and popped the tab on the can of beer and took a drink from it. Then, the man began consuming the meal he had bought from the convenience store in silence as Loganel sat down on a clear spot on the ground and simply watched.
After the man finished with his meal, he was reeking of the smell of alcohol. His face was slightly red, but other than that, the man appeared fine. After he flicked the switch to turn off the lights, he took off his suit jacket and then proceeded unbutton his shirt. He then took it off, revealing the black tank top he wore underneath it. Directly from there, the man fell onto his bed and crawled underneath his bed sheets with his eyes closed.
"..." Loganel sat there in silence. "What do I do now?"
He waited a bit for his eyes to adjust to the darkness, and then proceeded to get up. He walked over to where the man had placed his wallet and phone, which is the computer desk that was located by the bed. Oddly enough, the computer desk was the only clean area in this messy living space.
"Sorry about this but let's see who you are," Loganel whispered as he looked through the man's wallet for his ID. "So your name is Logan. Sounds kinda like mine. And your age is...twenty-five, a bit older than I expected..."
Loganel placed the man's wallet back onto the computer desk and pulled out the computer chair and sat down on it. He leaned back on the backrest and spun himself around a few times in boredom.
It's funny how no one can see me but I can still interact with everything.
As Loganel made a full cycle in his chair, his attention was suddenly caught by the large stack of papers that was neatly piled up in the center of the computer desk. He stopped the spinning motion of the chair with his feet, and proceeded to pick up the paper from the very top of the stack and attempted to read it.
"It's a bit too dark to read..." Loganel whispered. Acting almost subconsciously, he reached over to the desk lamp and clicked the on button in order to summon a ray of light that illuminated the paper. "What is this?"
"That's it?" Loganel scanned the piece of paper in search of more, but it would appear that this was all that was written on the first sheet of paper. "Don't tell me this whole stack is things like this?" he muttered as he eyed the thick stack of papers that was neatly piled up.
Loganel carefully placed the first sheet of paper to the side, face down so that he could restore it to its original spot without messing up the order if he were to place any other papers onto it, and proceeded to grab the next sheet from the stack and looked over it.
"What is this?" Loganel muttered in frustration as he proceeded onto the next sheet. "Why's this all short and stuff? And the dates of these letters are like super off with no consistency at all!"
He yawned as he placed the fiftieth sheet of paper to the side in the neat stack that he had created. Then, he sighed and picked up the next sheet.
Loganel's hands trembled as he read the letter. A mysterious sense of anger and frustration flooded his soul. He immediately slammed the paper down on the desk with force, not giving a damn if the paper were to wrinkle, and he searched for the man's smartphone. The object was connected to a power outlet by a white chord, charging for the next day's use, but Loganel didn't care at all. Instead, he pressed on the unlock button and a prompt asking for the password popped up, preventing him from access to his phone. When he saw that prompt, his fingers immediately automatically started filling in the numbers, and he was successful in unlocking the phone.
Loganel wasn't surprised at all by this. Rather, he was more focused on something else: to verify something that bugged him. He immediately pressed the icon that read messages, and searched through it. He didn't know what he was looking for exactly, but he knew that he would know if he saw it.
Even though the letter said it was seven years ago, it should be somewhere here. I would never have deleted—why did I say I? Doesn't matter. It should be somewhere here...Found it!
Loganel looked on in horror as he read the last few messages that the man had sent to this person named Lilith.
"You left her on read..." Loganel's voice trembled as he stared in horror at the sight of the small line of text underneath Lilith's last message sent to Logan. In addition, the date that the message was sent was seven years ago. "The hell you mean with your feelings fading? Aren't you still suffering from it?!"
Loganel rose from his seat, converting his frustration and anger into energy in his legs as he exploded up with tears in his eyes.
"You left her on read!" Loganel shouted, ignoring the fact that the man was still in a slumber. "Stop acting like you're the victim! You're the one that harmed her and yourself! These letters," Loganel reached behind him towards the desk and randomly grabbed a few pieces of paper into his hands, "why the hell are you writing them?! You're never gonna send it to her! So why did you even bother?! It's been seven whole years! And you're still not over it! Why?!"
Why am I so absorbed by this? This shouldn't even concern me...but for some reason I feel like this is an incident that I just can't let go of. Like this is something that concerns me on a more personal and emotional level.
"You're just decomposing in this mess! Do something about it! You're a mess right now!"
Loganel dropped to his knees.
"Why are you always like this?" Loganel could no longer hold back the tears that formed in his eyes and allowed them to roll down his cheeks freely. He doesn't know why he was so angry, but the feeling just existed there, haunting him and causing him unrest and tremendous pain knowing the fact that the man was intoxicated by the sufferings that he had brought on himself. "Using excuses and painting yourself like the victim...You're the one that caused all of this. Do something about it! Stop being so weak!"
The world around Loganel started to fade away, but the feelings of regret and anger did not.
Author's Note:
A longer chapter than usual. And for those that just skimmed through my book, this is something that Loganel always sees when he is in a state of near death.
