《Before I Forget - Eli Moskowitz -》Complicated

"Did you and Hawk break up?" Aisha asked, her dark eyes worried.
They were having a video call. It was early afternoon in California, whereas in Naples Sky's bedtime was already long past - fricking confusing time zones.
"It's... complicated." Sky replied with a sigh.
These past couple of days had been the worst - she had forgotten how badly a broken heart hurt. She missed Hawk horribly. Everything was a struggle - eating, sleeping, even breathing. It felt like someone had shot her in the middle of her chest with a cannon, crushing her lungs and her heart into a bloody pulp, leaving behind a scarred, smoldering hole.
"It's just... that he's been super aggro lately." Aisha said with a worried frown.
"Yeah, like super." Tory added with a smirk. "So, did you? Dump his ass?"
"We're on a break," Sky replied. She didn't really feel like explaining all this to Tory - they barely knew each other - but she was her teammate and she'd happen to be with Aisha when Sky called. They were at the dojo apparently, for Sky noticed they were wearing their gi's.
"On a break? Like Ross and Rachel?" Tory asked with a small laugh.
"Gods, I hope not," Sky rolled her eyes. "If Hawk decides to sleep with someone else, that's it."
"Like he'd do that," Aisha said and raised a brow at Tory, silently telling her not to joke about this. "He loves you, and honestly - He's been miserable since you left."
"Not miserable enough," Sky said. "He still hasn't apologized."
"Sky, I know you are pissed because of what he did, but come on. He loves you so much, and I know you love him too. Just give him another chance."

"But Demetri is my friend!"
"And Hawk is your boyfriend," Tory said. "Which side are you gonna be on?"
"I don't want to be on anybody's side!" Sky snapped. "Why do there need to be sides? Why can't we all just get along?"
"Now you sound like Gandhi," Aisha said. "Or Moon."
"Is that a bad thing?"
"Maybe you're making this more complicated than it is. You guys are the cutest couple ever. You belong together."
"Yeah, and Hawk is driving us crazy. Maybe just talk to him or something." Tory added.
Sky made a face. The only thing she wanted to do, was to talk to Hawk - but that was also the last thing she wanted to do.
He had sent her a million messages telling her he missed her and that he loved her and that nothing made sense without her and that he wanted to get back together - but not one saying he was sorry. She was beginning to realize he wasn't going to say that because he wasn't sorry. On the contrary, she suspected that he still felt like he had done nothing wrong. Maybe he felt bad because of their break but he wasn't sorry that he had attacked Demetri.
And that made Sky's heart twitch painfully.
"I don't know guys," she said, rubbing her forehead to ease the tension. "Like I said - complicated."
"What's complicated?" asked a voice Sky immediately recognized as Miguel's.
Aisha turned the phone so that she could see he had walked into the dojo - and Hawk was following him.
"Nothing," Aisha replied to Miguel. "Just having a chat with Sky—"
"Sky—?" That was Hawk. "Aisha, give me the phone!"
In a couple of fast strides, he had crossed the mat and was by Aisha's side, trying to grip the phone from her fingers, and Aisha kept backing off, holding the phone up so that all Sky could see was flashes of movement and the roof of the dojo. Then some muffled voices - Sky couldn't make out the words - and then Hawk's face appeared on the screen.

His eyes were huge and so blue it was like looking at the sky, his scar was bright red and clearly visible on his upper lip, but the first thing Sky noticed was the bruise the shape of a crescent moon on his cheekbone.
She took in a sharp breath, her thumb hovered over the screen ready to end the call - but she hesitated a moment too long.
"Hi," he said with his raspy voice that Sky loved more than anything. "Please don't hang up."
She swallowed, forcing the tears down. "What do you want?"
He looked anguished, his lips trembled. "To talk."
"About what?"
"About us!" He let out a frustrated sigh. "Jesus, Sky—"
He was walking with the phone, clearly to get somewhere where there would be a bit more privacy, and Sky heard the bell chime as he stepped outside. The bright sunlight fell on his face, illuminating his high cheekbones, casting shadows on the hollows of his cheeks.
"Then say what you wanna say," Sky breathed. She could taste the tears at the back of her throat, her voice came out shaky and uneven.
"I want to get back together," he said without a hint of hesitation. "Please, it's been days. I can't take this anymore."
Sky closed her eyes. She couldn't look at him, or she would break, break into tiny little pieces like shattering glass. She needed him like she needed the air she breathed, like her chest would collapse if she didn't get to hold him again.
But he wasn't apologizing. The one thing she needed to hear wasn't there and it never would be.
"Sky, come on," he groaned. "I fucking know you love me too."
She pushed her thumb on the screen and ended the call.
The pain of her breaking heart made everything else disappear. The room ceased to exist, she was alone in the darkness with nothing to hold on to. For the longest time, she sat there, on her bed, clutching her aching chest and gasping for air.
When she finally felt like she could breathe again, she stood up on her shaky legs and walked out of her room, careful to close the door so that Dad, who had the next room, wouldn't hear.
The pain was too much. She couldn't take it, she couldn't. If she didn't do something, anything, to diminish it even a bit, it would kill her, she would fucking slit her wrists to make it stop.
This was Naples, after all. It shouldn't be too hard to find someone who would sell her something that would take the edge off.
Without looking back, Sky headed into the night.
