《Psychic》Ch21 - A God

The arrival of the lawyer caught Zhuang Zhen completely off-guard, and he had no choice but to let Fan Jialuo go, in accordance with the law.
Pushing open the interrogation room's door, Zhuang Zhen said in a deep voice, "Fan Jialuo, you can go."
"Thank you, Officer Zhuang." Fan Jialuo bowed slightly, and his attitude was gentle and very polite. He made a move to leave but when he passed Zhuang Zhen, the other party suddenly grasped his slender wrist and said sternly, "No matter how watertight your words are, you and I both know that you didn't do your best in stopping these serial murders from happening. As long as you had the intention, you would have had thousands of ways to make us believe in your warning. Isn't that so?"
Fan Jialuo raised his brow slightly, and instead of answering, he posed a different question, "Officer Zhuang, how would you describe the word 'justice'?"
Zhuang Zhen subconsciously began to consider the question, but before he could answer, Fan Jialuo had already divulged the answer that was closest to his own heart. "For you, justice is law."
That's right, the law is a synonym for justice. Undoubtedly, this was Zhuang Zhen's truest and most honest opinion on justice.
However, Fan Jialuo then drew closer to him, until his mouth was only a short distance from his ear, and whispered slowly, "For me, justice is good when it results in something good, and evil when it results in something bad. Everyone is responsible for their own actions, which is even more so for those crimes which cannot be bound by law, wouldn't you agree?" He chuckled as a layer of fog gleamed in his dark eyes, making him look like a ghost.
Zhuang Zhen couldn't help but retreat by taking a large step backward to escape from Fan Jialuo's proximity. He desperately wanted to rub his ears and calm the goosebumps that had formed, and just barely restrained himself from doing so. Instead, in a frigid tone, he simply said, "You can go." He then fled.
Fan Jialuo followed the lawyer out of the interrogation room into the hallway outside.
A tall man was waiting for him at the door near the exit of the Public Security Bureau. The man stood sideways, such that his left profile faced the orange sunset while his right side hid in the hazy shadow of light, and he held a cigarette that had not been lit. Although the way he stood showed that he was just waiting, his posture was elegant and solemn. He had a frown on his face, as if he was not in a good mood, but that did nothing to detract from his beauty.
With just the addition of his existence, the narrow and simple doorway was accentuated, almost seeming like the entrance to a palace.
Prior to this, even when the original Fan Jialuo had made requests, he had been unable to meet this person. Yes, this person was Zhao Wenyan-the original Fan Jialuo's male god. The person he loved, but couldn't receive love from; the person he wanted to hate, but didn't dare to-the CEO of Xinghui Entertainment Company, and also the man who controlled the whole entertainment circle in the country.
Logically speaking, he had nothing to fear from Fan Jialuo. After all, was it possible for him to squander his business?
In fact, when it was discovered that Zhao Wenyan was the one who had come to bail Fan Jialuo out, even the Bureau Chief was shocked.

But Fan Jialuo showed no signs of surprise at all. He just nodded slightly to Zhao Wenyan, saying hello through the gesture. Then he made his way to the reception desk and retrieved the gift box he had left in the locker earlier.
With the gift box in hand, Fan Jialuo turned around and as he presented the box to Liao Feng, he said, "I really appreciate your care from last time. Please accept this small gift."
Liao Fang, who had her path blocked by him, stared in amazement, then quickly waved her hand. "No, no, no, Please take it back. We have rules in the Bureau that state we can't accept any gifts! Our relationship is of that of a police officer and a suspect. It's not appropriate to exchange gifts with each other, really!"
Fan Jialuo chuckled, "You think too much. It's just an umbrella. I'm paying you back for the last time when you helped me out. That umbrella was pelted with eggs, even if it was washed clean, how could I return it to you? You deserve better."
When Fan Jialuo was angry, he could make people die from excessive anger, but when he was pleased with others, he could make them feel over the moon.
His expression right now was gentle and warm. As he laughed, his face brightened even more than usual, looking just like a rosy cloud, which made it impossible for Liao Fang to resist.
Unconsciously, she reached her hand out and took the gift box. By the time she returned to her senses, the man had already left with Zhao Wenyan and his lawyer. The slender figure was gradually engulfed by the afterglow of the setting sun.
The members of the task force had already seen the interrogation videos. They were very curious about the 'godly' Fan Jialuo, but were hindered by the uniforms they wore and weren't able to go and observe him in person. When Fan Jialuo was leaving, these people went and crowded at the window to peer at his retreating figure, with eyes full of inquiry, doubt, and even some awe.
Zhuang Zhen slapped one of the thick stacks of files on the table and shouted, "What are you looking at? Are your hands free? If this case can't be solved, our First Investigation Team will get a major demerit on our record!"
Thinking of this serial murder case-that was still bereft of any clues-made the team members immediately wilt. They were no longer in the mood to watch Fan Jialuo.
Liao Fang took this opportunity to open the gift box and found that it contained a pure white umbrella. Although it belonged to a fairly big brand, its price was not that expensive. She was relieved. Several policewomen gathered around and whispered, "Fang Fang, show me what Fan Jialuo gifted you."
"Ah, it's an umbrella. Things worth tens of dollars are not too expensive."
"He's quite measured."
"Fang Fang, you participated in the interrogation. Say, is that Fan Jialuo really a psychic? Is he really so godlike?"
Liao Fang was about to nod when one of the surrounding policewomen grabbed the umbrella and opened it against the sunset. She sneered, "What god? It's nothing but psychological profiling and tricks. Anyone who has studied psychology will know such things. If he really is a psychic, would he send Fang Fang this umbrella?"
Another policewoman immediately echoed, "Yes! This umbrella's style doesn't match Fang Fang's tastes at all. If he is really a psychic, shouldn't he know what's in Fang Fang's mind?"

However, as soon as their voices fell, they both ended up exclaiming in unison. Their expressions of disapproval had been replaced by disbelief.
They watched as the pure white umbrella was gradually dyed into pure black by the sunlight, and a number of silver stars started shining on the umbrella's surface-their pattern forming the constellation of Leo.
At this moment, both of them thought back to Liao Fang's words-I want to buy an umbrella with a starry sky pattern, the best would be if the pattern depicts Leo, my constellation. It would be a black sky with silver stars, shining a little and sparkling a little under the sun.
Scrutinizing it with their eyes, they discovered nothing in this umbrella that didn't meet Liao Fang's expectations, if anything, it was even more beautiful and exquisite than the imagined version. It seemed that someone had heard Liao Fang's words, and then cast a spell to summon the umbrella she had described into reality by using the power of words and spirit.
If it had been before the interrogation, these policewomen would have thought that it was just a wonderful coincidence, but after having heard about the interrogation, they could not help but think that these two things were connected.
Could this so-called 'mind-reading skill' really transcend the barriers of space and time, and so allow Fan Jialuo to foresee what Liao Fang would say without even needing to be face to face?
Could that Fan Jialuo really be so divine?
This question didn't seem to need an answer.
The policewoman's hands, which held the umbrella, were shaking while the rest of the policewomen's faces were obscure, showing stunned expressions.
"Ah! This umbrella, what should we do about this umbrella?" Liao Fang was left stunned for a long while before she could rush over to grab the umbrella from her colleague. She was unable to string together even a complete word. She was really thoroughly surprised.
Of course, since they were all still in the Bureau, it was not easy to discuss and share the matter with everyone else. Otherwise, the Bureau Chief would reprimand them on the grounds of promoting superstition. But their impressions of Fan Jialuo had quickly changed.
He was not a swindler at all-rather, he was a godlike man of profound mystery.
"Fang Fang, put your umbrella away." The police woman passed the gift box over to Liao Fang.
Liao Fang hurriedly closed the umbrella and tried to tamp down on the excitement that was bubbling up inside her.
It was at this moment that they saw Liu Tao run hurriedly into the office with the thermos cup in his hand, and shout, "Leader, the test report is out. There are no suspicious ingredients in the water; it's just plain boiled water. What do you think this means? What's going on?! How can the water become bitter without adding anything to it? Don't you think the Forensic Department has to give us a more detailed explanation?"
The technician from the Forensic Department who had followed Liu Tao into the office said angrily, "I'll emphasize it again to you all. Since the water quality is fine, then it's you people who either have a psychological problem, or that your body has undergone pathological changes, or that your taste buds are abnormal. If you have so much time, it would be better for you to go to the hospital to get your hepatobiliary function checked."
"How many times have I told you that none of us have any physical problems at all? We all got a group examination last week itself. If we had problems then why wouldn't that doctor have said so? Also, I am not the only one who thinks it's bitter, they all do too! If you don't believe it, you should taste it yourself to understand! Try it before you say that again!" Liu Tao grabbed the technician's collar and forcefully made him gulp a mouthful of water.
At first, the technician was annoyed at Liu Tao's meddling, but suddenly, his tongue felt like it had changed color from the bitterness it tasted. He was sure that his mental and physical condition were all in good state. In other words, the water was really bitter! But the test report showed that there was no problem with the water quality, so it should be tasteless!
"How do you explain that? Now you tell me!" Liu Tao asked again without any hesitation.
The rest of the policemen also stared at the technician, hoping he could give them a reasonable explanation.
The technician thought for a long time but could only say awkwardly, "Well, science really can't explain it! Or maybe you can give me more of the water so I can run several more tests. Well, in any case, I have something else to do upstairs. I'll head off first. See you later, everyone!"
The technician slipped away hurriedly, as if his feet had been smeared with oil, leaving Liu Tao, who was still holding the thermos cup, to mutter in his heart: Today, my outlook of the world has been greatly and unprecedentedly impacted.
Zhuang Zhen had something else in mind, so he was too lazy to bother with Liu Tao and just took this information to the observation room.
Song Rui was sitting in front of the computer, watching the interrogation video repeatedly, again and again. Xiao Li kept fast forwarding or playing it back according to his requirements. He also extracted some pictures and checked them frame by frame.
"Did you find anything?" Zhuang Zhen asked in a deep voice.
"Yes." Song Rui took off his glasses and rubbed his eyebrows.
"Oh? Let's hear it." Zhuang Zhen immediately focused on the computer screen, looking very attentive.
"This man is not simple." Song Rui pointed to one of the videos and said, "This bit was recorded when he said he was a psychic. Listen to him carefully."
As expected, Zhuang Zhen listened very carefully. The Fan Jialuo on the screen narrowed his eyes and said slowly, "...I have eight. In addition to the six senses you have, I have two more, manas and alaya..."
Song Rui pressed the pause key, stared at Zhuang Zhen directly, and asked, "Do you know what manas and alaya is?"
"I don't know. Is there a problem?" Zhuang Zhen didn't think that all this bullshit had anything to do with the case.
"Through this sentence, I have probably gained some understanding about the kind of man Fan Jialuo is, and what his motivations for first creating that death sketch and then posting those death notices on the Internet are." Song Rui turned to look at the Fan Jialuo displayed on the screen, and his eyes became extremely complicated.
Xiao Li raised his ears and his eyes were eager. He was really very curious about this man, and wanted to know what his inner world was like.
...
Qiuxue: That umbrella sounds so pretty! And, maybe people should start learning not to doubt our Fan Jialuo~

Dream Dungeon
Welcome to the dream dungeon. Ely suddenly finds himself in a mysterious dungeon accessed only through sleeping. Many people are drawn into this dream world, confused and mystified. Those in this dungeon must kill monsters to survive; maybe even each other. Join Ely as he struggles to survive a ruthless environment. What replaces his rest is untold trauma. What seems like an innocent game trope turns into a nightmare. This is a story of tragedy and the path to ultimate power. All in the hopes of an uncertain survival. _________ This fiction has NOT been abandoned. I made a haughty promise earlier to not worry because I'll continue this series, and with things lately, I've only proved myself a liar. Further promises dwindled, and I've lost trust. So many things have been going on recently that I've been booked. I will refrain from making any future guarantees or promises as my busy schedule will stay with me for a long long while. Time for me to actually spend on writing and revising won't appear until at the least November 19. I won't say expect that's when I'll restart, but you can expect expecting it to maybe happen. That's really shallow. But with everything going on, I've let my small reading base down. I apologize. I still stick by my statement though that I won't abandon this project. I plan to stick it to the end, no matter the delay. Most importantly, thank you everyone; readers who both like and dislike my work. I appreciate your time spent on my dumb imagination. Stay toasty my readers in this winter season. Cheers. UPDATE: We're back on track. Thank you for your patience. Any future readers, heyo! Glad you're here. UPDATE 2: So far it's been 21 days since I last uploaded a chapter. The best thing done for any fiction, no matter how good it is, is that it continues, and I have a bad history with that. 1 fiction on hiatus and already more delays with less than 20 chapters in this fiction. I've been very preoccupied with adding more things to do in my life rather than actually committing to any particular thing. That applies primarily to this. I cannot abandon this, as busy as my future looks and will look as I get busier and busier. Someday, I hope, I will be able to sit down and just write. just. write. But for now, I ask for patience. I suppose I'm glad this fiction hasn't picked up so that I don't disappoint too many people if any really. But I need to commit and it's going to happen sometime and sometime soon. No more flowery words. I'll see you later. UPDATE 3: It's very evident I won't be able to pick up this story for a while. With AP Testing, competitions, and other things I am busier than ever. But I must complete this fiction. I have too. Until next time. UPDATE 4: It is now the summer. I owe everyone an apology. Chances are, nobody's around to see this, and that is okay. I only blame myself for this sort of brokenness of a fiction, not that it is actually that bad but I am just exaggerating it for dramatic effect. But what's not exaggerated is the severity of my broken promise. I apologize for my naive claims about finishing a novel that I couldn't finish and that I didn't have the discipline to finish. Nor the skills, really, I was and am still an immature writer. What is to place now? I want to make it clear I understand this is my fault. I will man up to this. And I will accept any criticism. I understand I messed up. Reading Stephen King's On Writing made it clear to me that I need to do two things:Read lots. And write lots.I have done neither. If I don't have the time to read often, how do I expect to write? I need to become more experienced. I need to become a serious writer. So if I want to dream of continuing, I need to at least fulfill both requirements. I enjoy writing. I haven't written seriously outside of school in a while. I planned to write this summer and finish this. I made a lot of promises that I didn't keep.So there's that. I won't enact any self-pity, or be foolishly obsessed. What I did was wrong, and I must deal with it. I let down readers. And I apologize.I hope I can find forgiveness. This is a writer's sin.I won't promise I'll finish this. I intend to finish this, at some point, because writing is fun and I want to write. But how things are don't reflect that. Maybe I'll finish this at some point. Maybe I won't. I won't be naive to make that promise.I thank everyone who has read this if this is the end. If not, and hopefully not, I thank everyone who is to read future chapters. I thank everyone who allowed me to live in the miniscule little dream of mine as I passed my days. I thank everyone who cares enough to read this. Until next time, peace everyone. Thank you. You are all great readers and great people. I wish everyone the best in whatever reading/writing endeavors follow you henceforth.
