《The Mafia's Mistake (Completed)》Chapter 40 *EDITED*

The rain was pouring, droplets graciously sliding down my window. The sky was covered with dark clouds hiding the little sunlight there was. Lighting struck, a kaleidoscope of colour lighting the dark sky. Someone knocked at the door only to wait a few moments before knocking again. Finally, the handle pressed down and an unknown person pushed the door.

I heard footsteps coming toward my bed, but I was too weak to move my head to see who my visitor was.

"Here is your food Miss," The tall girl with a black tunic and white shirt said as she always did before throwing me one last glance and walking away sadly, pity clearly evident in her eyes.

I stared at the food, just staring at it.

This is my life now, lay in bed, too tired to cry, too angry to eat, too sad to care. My mind was buried deep in thoughts, a massive migraine hammering in my head leading to my left eye to turn red and become sore. I welcomed all the pain. It reminded me that I was still alive that I was still breathing. Seconds become minutes, minutes became hours, hours become days and days passed into weeks.

The door opened again, I heard footsteps and before me stood 'the father of my child'. He stared at me with mixed emotions. It'd been a full month since I'd seen him and it seemed like life was treating him well.

"Harley, I hear you are not eating," He said.

expecting an answer he wouldn't get.

"Are you trying to kill the baby?"

I wondered why he cared. Not like he wanted the baby.

Getting no reply he took the soup from the side table and sat at the edge of the bed before scooping some soup and forcefully shoved it into my mouth.

I didn't fight, the soup just dripped out of my mouth to the sheets.

He attempted to feed me again and again but after a while he threw the bowl across the room in frustration and I heard it shatter. I didn't know what was wrong with me. Maybe this was me rebelling, maybe it was me fighting back, or maybe just maybe it was me giving up.

My whole body was numb and so weak. I lay flat on the bed and stared up at the ceiling fan until my eyes started to droop as I saw dark spots and I was out like a light.

I was hit with a head splitting headache, after waking up. It was so painful that I groaned and struggled to open my heavy eyes. Finally my sore eyes peeled opened and I was in my room but there was this sound that just caused my headache to worsen. When my head finally cleared I heard a distinct rhythmic beating and I looked around to see a heart monitor, a drip was also handing right next to the bed.

I tried to sit up, but I was too weak and my body ached like hell. A glass of water was placed on the palate and I struggled to grab it as my hands violently shook.

The room was dim as the curtains were closed with the only light coming from the two side lamps.

I gulped down the glass of water and coughed violently from the water going down my airway. My heart was beating so fast, the heart monitor beeping faster. I sat back and closed my eyes trying to calm down.

I wonder how much time had passed since I'd passed out. My hand went to my belly and brushed it protectively.

What in the world had I done?

I wondered if my baby was okay. I hoped she was, I really did. I was such a bad mother.

It dawned to me that I was damaged, Rafael had broken me and I could never be the same. He had crippled me, took every shred of confidence, dignity, and fight out of me. All the things he'd done had finally weighed down on me and just left a shell of a person.

Rafael was right. It was my fault. I was weak, I wasn't strong enough. I'd let him break me, all in the name of love and hope. I was so hopeful that maybe just maybe he loved me, maybe, just maybe, he cared, maybe we would move from our past but he'd always been a psychopath and that would never change.

I heard the door open and I was shocked to see Loala walk in. She carefully closed the door behind her walking towards me slowly as if she was scared.

"Hello," she said quietly.

I cleared my dry throat.

"Hi," I said with much difficulty. It was painful to talk.

"I sneaked in here to see you but you'd passed out." She said fidgeting with her hands.

She looked beautiful. Her hair was down to her waist, makeup on point, and her face was glowing being complemented by the yellow dress she wore.

I didn't say anything back to her.

She walked to the curtains and pulled them open as sunlight came bursting through. I closed my eyes and opened them again after I'd grown used to intensity of the light.

"Would you like water?" She asked and I nodded.

She took the glass and walked to the bathroom and came back with a glass full of water.

"Thank you," I said as I gulped the glass down.

She sat on the chair by the bed.

"I'm not supposed to be here, I sneaked in and then when Rafael locked me in the bedroom to his office." She giggled a little. "He doesn't know that I can pick locks," She continued.

I raise an eyebrow, impressed with her ability to be pretty and handy.

There was an awkward silence for a moment before she continued.

"All he does is lock me in that stupid room, it's driving me insane and he's always so clingy by my side. I think he's obsessed with me," She said.

If only you knew how obsessed he really is, I thought.

"What kind of person kidnaps someone else dresses them up like a freaking doll, and says that he love them. He's sick." She said furiously and stood up pacing around the room.

"He's crazy and I can't stand it. I've tried running away so many times, but he always catches me and now the house is on lock down and it is impossible to get out. What am I going to do?" She continued, "Urgh, I just want to kill him. Every night he watches me sleep and it's so creepy."

This girl can talk, I thought.

"Anyways I'm Loala," she finally said as she sat down again, I nodded, "Who are you?" She asked loudly.

"I'm Harley." I finally said.

"What are you doing in this house Harley?" She asked eagerly.

"I was kidnapped," I said casually and her eyes went wide.

"When did this happen?" She asked sitting at the edge of the chair.

"27 July 2017 at Lukoil petrol station," I replied, my voice cracking a little bit.

"Oh my, you're just like me." she said.

Thing was, she was not just like me one bit.

"Why?" She asked.

I didn't answer her for a while, my emotions got the best of me. But I pushed my tears back and cleared my throat.

"They thought I was you. Apparently you were at the same petrol station and we were wearing similar outfits," I said and her face went pale.

We were quiet for a while.

"What did he do when he found out you weren't me?" She asked.

The memory came crashing back and it was hard to answer. It was like I was reliving the pain again.

"He... uh," My voice cracked a bit and I forced myself to swallow the tears, "He beat me until I was unconscious and the following day... he raped me." I said my voice came out shaky. I couldn't keep the tears down now.

It was all my fault, the words kept repeating themself in my mind.

Loala was so pale I thought she'd faint. Her whole body was shaking as she looked into my eyes.

"He threatened to have all his men rape me and put me out on the streets as a prostitute if I didn't behave, so I just gave into him after that. I was weak," I said whilst tears streamed down Loala's face.

"Is that.... his baby?" She gestured her head at my stomach and asked with a shaky voice and I nodded.

"He's so cruel Loala, he is so heartless," I said, blubbering as we both cried.

"He said he'd never hurt me, he seemed so harmless to me." Loala said.

"He's obsessed with you, he'd never hurt you but please be careful and don't stop fighting," I said to her.

"That day when you were coming out of his office, had he hit you?" She asked quietly.

"Yeah, he was so frustrated that you wouldn't give in to him and he was mad that I'd tried to run away after he brought you in," I said.

"But you're pregnant with his child," Loala said perplexed.

"He doesn't care, all that is important to him is you," I said.

"Oh my God!" Loala looked like she was about to faint and just then the door opened. Rafael walked in furious.

His eyes took in Loala from head to toe before him rushing to her.

"Why you crying baby?" He asked worried, wiping Loala's tears from her cheeks lovingly. If I didn't know better my heart would have melted at how caring and worried he looked, but I knew better.

"Harley what did you do to her?" He shouted.

"No, she didn't do anything. We were just laughing at a joke and we laughed so hard we cried!" Loala replied enthusiastically trying to cover for me.

Rafael looked from her to me before walking towards the door.

When he got there he turned around.

"I'm not done with you Harley," He said before closing the door and leaving.
