Everyone’s mouth drops open except for Gale’s. Gale had a smile on his face, and he’s crying. He wraps his arms around her then gives her a kiss.

“I love you,” he says.

“I love you to,” she says.

“Congratulations” says Peeta. She looks so glad that, that’s off her chest even though she’s only been hiding it for a few days. Now she can admit that she’s going to be a mother and Gale is going to be a father. I couldn’t be happier. My mom gives her a hug.

When I look at Claudia’s face I can tell something is wrong. I can’t tell if she’s mad or crying. I go up to her.

“Are you okay?” I ask. She shakes her head so I give her a hug. Everything will be fine and I hope she knows it.

“Now that, that’s over with I don’t know if you noticed but we are still in a jail cell,” says Gale. Peeta walks over to me and puts his arm around me. Now I have to get serious I want to get out of the Capitol and never look back. I gather them all in the corner again and plot out how we are going to get out of here. The Peacekeepers switch shifts of standing there talking to another Peacekeeper and two more come in after about an hour. Every Peacekeeper has keys on their left hip. I would just use the keys that were on my uniform but they confiscated them without me even knowing. Sadly that’s all I got. There are no vents and we have no weapons.

We are in this cell for at least a week one meal a day. And every meal is a small bowl of soup and a small roll. We each get one pillow and one blanket which means we sleep on the cold floor. I can tell everyone is starting to get annoyed that we’ve been waiting for so long. The routine is the same every day. We get up, complain how our back hurts, an angry Peacekeeper would torment us, we’d eat, then Paylor would come in and intimidate us threatening to kill us, Haymitch would complain because there is no alcohol , then we would all just talk then go back to bed. It’s sort of nice that they don’t torture us here but it would be a lot nicer being home with Peeta, cuddling next him by our fireplace then eventually falling asleep in his arms. Instead we’re freezing so I stay in Peeta’s arms to keep warm, and I’m lucky if I get two hours of sleep. Peeta comes up behind me and puts his arms around me.

“Hey,” he says.

“Hey,” I say. He pulls me into the corner.

“Katniss, we got to get out of here.”

“I know, I just can’t think of anything right now. It’s too much to think of. It’s really been the only thing on my mind and I can’t find a single way out unless I have a weapon or anything else I don’t have.”

“I think I have an idea.” We gather everyone in the corner. Peeta’s idea is really good. I really should leave him in charge of things more often. When it comes to fighting I always thought he was a weak link, but after spending the last two years living with each other I’ve found out that he’s really strong and he’s capable of more than I thought. Another reason why I love him. Since it’s getting late though, we will do it first thing in the morning. I’m the only one that can’t seem to sleep, I will wake everyone up early when the Peacekeeper’s are still sleeping. Peeta and I lay down in our corner while Gale and Claudia lay down in theirs. I feel sorry for my mom, Haymitch and Plutarch. Since they don’t have anyone to lay next to and stay warm they’re forced to lay by themselves, cold. I’m still cold even though Peeta has his arms around me at night. Right before I close my eyes Peeta starts to whisper in my ear,

“How old are they?” he asks.

“Gale is twenty three and Claudia is twenty.”

“Isn’t that a little young to be having a baby?”

“Well they had to have decided somewhere along the road if they were going to have one.”

“But, when she said that it really made me think about what you said about on the beach. If I were Gale right now I would be terrified. I wouldn’t have a clue on what to do.”

“It’s probably what he’s feeling right now.”

“I was watching your interview. You really want to start a family with me?”

“I said we may start a family. Not soon though.”

“I’ll take it.” I laugh. “Thanks for talking about this with me, it really made me re-think the whole “child” thing again.”

“It’s fine. I’m glad we talked about it. And I’m glad we can tell each other anything.” He smiles and I turn back around. He puts his arm around me and I eventually fall asleep but not for long. When I wake up Peeta and Gale are snoring. I don’t know how they can sleep. I look outside the cell and I see that both of the Pecekeepers that are suppose to be guarding us are sleeping. Perfect. I wake up Peeta first and I can tell he doesn’t want to wake up. Eventually I just roll him over and he wakes up. But when I do roll him over I fall a little and I feel a prick in my chest. Then I remember that I still have my darts and my poison. When Peeta finally opens his eyes he sees how I have darts and poison in my hands. He looked really confused

“How did you get those?” he whispers.

“I forgot I had them hidden in my jacket. If we kill the Peacekeepers other Peacekeepers will come to switch shifts and when they see them dead they are going to come and unlock our cell to remove us all and that’s when we kill them,” I say. He smiles then helps me get everyone else up. I tell them our change in plans. But I can tell Gale is hesitant.

“Once Katniss shoots the sleeping Peacekeepers we figure out a way to get their keys and unlock the cell,” says Peeta. I stare down Gale and he avoids my eye contact.

“What’s wrong?” I ask looking at Gale.

“What do you mean?” asks Peeta.

“Not you, Gale,” I say. Gale keeps avoiding eye contact with me.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.

“Nothing, it’s just-,” he trails off.

“Tell me, is there something wrong with my plan?” I ask in a frustrated tone.

“It’s just this is the Capitol here, not a joke.”

“How is this a joke?”

“This is the Capitol. Those darts will do nothing but get us killed. In the Rebellion we had many teams that were armed as much as possible and we barely won.”

“I know Gale, I was there. I was in the Rebellion, remember?” He doesn’t respond.

“Are we going to use the darts or not because we are running out of time,” says Peeta. Gale just starts shaking his head.

“I guess we could use it, but if we die it’s all Katniss’ fault,” says Gale. Claudia hits him on the shoulder. Peeta starts to rub my back.

“Gale, I think this idea would work because by the time another set of Peacekeepers sees the two pairs that we killed, we could be threatening Paylor or even killing her by then,” says Haymitch. Gale just rolls his eyes. I’ve never seen him like this before. I think that ever since I married Peeta, Gale hasn’t wanted to be my friend anymore. He never really wanted to be my friend though, he wanted to always be my husband. But I love Peeta, not Gale. Peeta is min, and I am his. Anything else is unthinkable. He has to realize this. I thought Gale supported me. But I guess Peeta is the only person who supports me now. I wrap my arms around Peeta.

“It’s okay,” Peeta whispers.

“My best friend hates me,” I say. Peeta brings me over to the other side of the cell then puts his arms around me as I bury my face into his shoulder and start to cry.

“He doesn’t hate you, you know that. He will always be your friend. You two will just have ups and downs but everything will be alright in the end.”

“We would never fight though. Ever since the Games he hasn’t been the same.”

“Well before the Games you two were probably going to get married because you two were so close. You would go out into the woods every day to bring food home for your families. After the Games you became rich, we fell in love, and we got married. I think he just feels left out of your life ever since I came into it.”

“It’s not your fault, he just hates me because I spend more time with you than him.” I look up and he wipes away my tears.

“Let’s just do your plan. And if we do die today at least we will die together as a family.” I smile a little and give him a kiss. We walk back over and we all agree to use the darts. So I get a dart out and drench it in the poison and aim it for the Peacekeepers neck. It’s a hit. This is too easy. I do the same thing with the other Peacekeeper and get him right into the neck. The poison took over their body before they even got a chance to scream. Once I put the rest of the darts and the poison back in my coat, I sit down next to Peeta and we all wait. One Peacekeeper falls down right by the cell. By the time we get the keys the next set of Peacekeepers came in. We were expecting two not twenty. Then I see it, in the corner of the room. A camera. We’ve been caught in the crime. And now, because of me all of us are going to die. Even Gale and Claudia’s baby, because I was stupid to think this idea would work. Gale was right. This is the Capitol, and of course I was wrong and he was right. My fault again.
