《The Star-Crossed Lovers from District 12 (Wattys Finalist 2013)》Part 3-Know Who the Enemy is-Chapter 18

All night I thought about my plan on how to get into the arena. I’m still not sure how I’m going to get into the arena but I know I have to get in there to have Gale and Claudia help me kill Paylor. I find the tracing of the engraving and I put it into the inner pocket of my father’s hunting jacket. I skip breakfast and go into Peeta’s room. He looked well enough to talk to so I type in the code and walk into his room. He’s not awake so I shake him. He puts his hands on my face.
“Are you okay, it looks like you didn’t sleep all night,” he says. I pull his hands away. I don’t understand why they keep him locked up? He is absolutely fine and after an hour he’s safe to be around. Their drugs must be paying off.
“I’m fine Peeta, now listen are you well enough to not to tell anyone what I’m about to say?” He stays silent as if he’s not sure. I hope he is. I need to tell someone and that someone will not be Haymitch.
“Yes, I promise I won’t tell anyone no matter how bad of a flashback I’m in. I will always support you even if I’m not me. I’m here for you.” I nod my head then lower my voice to a whisper.
“You know how we know that Paylor is the one doing this to you right?” He nods his head.
“Do you want me to tell people that we know it’s her?” I shake my head immediately.
“No, it will just cause us both to be arrested.” He nods his head. “Peeta, I can’t stress this enough please don’t tell anyone.”
“I won’t, I promise.”
“I trust you.” I take a deep breath. “I’m going into the arena,” I say while whispering so softly that he can barely hear me.
“What!” he yells. I put my hand over his mouth.
“Shhh,” I say. “Be quiet.” He pushes my hand of his mouth.
“Why would you do something so stupid,” he says whispering now. I sit on the edge of his bed.
“I’m going to kill Paylor.” He takes a deep breath as if to yell but I cover his mouth. I don’t remove it until he promises he will be quiet.
“What does killing Paylor have to do with going into the arena?”
“I’m going to get Gale and Claudia out so they can help me.”
“Why can’t I help?” I was hoping he wouldn’t say this. I want him to help. He’s strong and he would do just fine helping me out if he wasn’t like this. If he came with me, he would be in open range for Paylor to send Peacekeepers and kill him. I would have nothing to live for.
“Peeta you know I love you but in the condition you’re in I can’t risk you getting hurt.” He clenches his fists but slowly unclenches them. “You cannot tell anyone under any circumstances.” He nods his head.

“They have me on that medication so I should be fine,” he says holding back his tears. I watch one roll down his cheek. I resist the impulse to wipe it away and nod my head.
“I’m going to try to pull all of this off tonight so Gale and Claudia won’t be in the arena that long. But until then try not to go to sleep. The last thing we need is Paylor coming in here and switching your medication with trackerjacker venom.” He nods his head. “I will come back and get you once we have everything taken care of. I’m going to tell the others so they can help since they helped the rebels take over the Capitol.” He nods his head. I give him a kiss goodbye then leave before he can say a word more. If my plan doesn’t go down, that will be the last time I will see Peeta. I rush down the hall to the Prep Room where they get me ready. The Games start in exactly three hours. I have time to think my plan through. How will I get into the arena? I can’t trust anyone around here with the Games going on, not Gino, not my prep team, not even Haymitch. I can’t trust any of the other victors because I don’t know if they know about Paylor’s scheme. This place has guards everywhere which makes my plan that much harder.
The security systems are all hooked up onto one computer. I have to find that control room and shut down the system. I kill anyone in my way. It’s the only way I can keep Peeta and I safe. I go back to my room and take out my father’s hunting jacket. He always kept a small dart gun, a dozen darts, and a small bottle of poison in the pocket that is hidden inside the jacket. The poison may be old and the darts may be rusty but they still work. I hide them in the pocket of my coat and go to the Control Room. Two hours left. I go find Haymitch. He’s not here, he’s giving Gale and Claudia last minute advice. I walk by Peeta’s room and he’s yelling my name. I do my best to ignore it even though I really wanted to go in there and just cuddle up next to him not having a worry, but I have to stay focused. I run down the hall and find a Peacekeeper. I ask him if I can see the surveillance footage from my room. He must be new because he leads me right to the room where all of the security cameras are hooked up to. Once he opens up the door I look in front of him to see if there are any other Peacekeepers. None. I shut the door behind me and I take the gun off his belt and throw it on the ground. He turns around and I punch him in the stomach. He collapses on the ground. I kick him in the stomach so he will stay on the ground. I pull out one of the darts and dip it in the poison and put it in the blow gun and aim for his neck. I get him in the back of the neck. I find some tape and put it over his mouth so no one will hear his dying screams. I don’t want to do this, but I have to. It’s like the arena. You don’t want to kill anyone, but it’s the only way you can get out alive. I walk around him and lock the door then sit down in front of the computer. It requires a password. I have a pretty good guess and type in 03232785. I get in. That must be the code for everything here. Next thing I know all of the computers were on and each computer had four different shots of live security footage. I look everywhere on the computer to find an off switch and I can’t find one. So I just unplug all of the plugs in the main computer until all of the screens are static. The Peacekeeper is silent now so I un-tape his mouth and he doesn’t make a sound. So I take the dart out of his neck and wipe the blood off on some paper then hide it in my pocket again. I put the Peacekeeper in the closet then check the time I have a half hour so I make my way back to my room and put on my Gamemaker outfit. When I get there people are frantically running all over the room doing last minute checks. In a couple of minutes they will start loading the tributes in the hovercraft. Sean comes up to me and it looks like he hasn’t slept in days.

“Katniss, we don’t know what terrors you want and we don’t know how high you want the incline and the games start in thirty minutes. What are we going to do!” he asks in a panicked voice. I put my hands on his shoulder and talk to him in a calm voice.
“Sean, I put all my trust in you, surprise me. And if you mess up it’s alright because it could put a twist in the games. Sean take a break, you’re not the only Control Room Specialist in here,” I say. He nods his head. The tributes are going into the hovercraft because lights are coming up on the screen with the mentor’s last name. Their trackers are being put in their arms. I bet that at least half of the tributes are crying right now. Ten minutes until they are in the arena. Final checks are going on. Everyone is sitting down now getting ready to kill 22 people on their touch screen computers. I can’t believe they would actually do this, it’s sick. They tributes have taken off now. I wonder how Gale and Claudia are doing, or if they are even in the same hovercraft. I have five minutes until the tributes arrive. I want to go see Peeta so I start walking towards his room when I stop myself. If I go in there, then I die it will be even harder for Peeta to get over me. I have to make his life easier. He will have to get over me. He knows I love him with my whole heart. That’s all I can ask for. I walk back to the Control Room and the tributes are right under us. They will be coming up the tubes in one minute. The cameras are on everywhere in the arena. Right now all of the cameras are where the tributes come out. They Capitol must be going crazy right now, or they are crying their eyes out. I think it’s half, half. Everyone is making sure everything is perfect because we only have one chance. The tributes are now coming up. Gale and Claudia are probably terrified right now but keeping strong faces. Claudia is so brave to do this for the man she loves. And Gale must really love her for doing this. I think I get why Claudia thought Gale didn’t love her. He couldn’t. He didn’t want to lose her like he lost me. I think he wanted to make sure that she was the one before he made any real commitment. He was close to having a real commitment with me but then I basically left him in the dust because I loved Peeta. I know he was heart broken and I still feel guilty about how I broke his heart but at least we can still be good friends. I don’t blame him for being so hesitant about Claudia. But she loves him and I know by the look in his eye that he loves her to. I know that once they win these games that they will probably get married because they will open up to each other like Peeta and I did in the cave. Which is how I fell in love with him. I look up at the screen and see that there are roughly about twenty seconds until the games begin. Gale is about five or six tributes to Claudia’s left. I wonder if they will team up right away or eventually find each other. They basically are the Careers in these Games since they are the only ones with a chance. Then I hear it. Someone presses a button in the Control Room and the gong sounds.
“Let the first annual Capitol Children Hunger Games Begin!” I announce.

Braindead - A Zombie LitRPG
In a world where zombies are trash mobs that children kill for easy exp, what hope does one little zed have? Zed was minding his own business when his master's domain was invaded by a plucky young heroine looking to make a name for herself. An unlikely turn of events allowed Zed to come out on top, and gave him enough experience to rise above the life of a mindless minion. Unfortunately, it also left him with no body to share it with... literally, not figuratively! This story contains: Some 'jokes' containing questionable humour. An inhuman MC who has no interest in pesky things like romance or growing a conscience. Blue boxes, and a DnD style system messily mashed together with several other systems. Gore, but nothing too gratuitous. The main character is a severed head so what do you expect? Kingdom/base building, because what good is a zombie without a good horde behind them. Releases planned for each Sunday until I build up a decent backlog.
