"Where are you taking me?" I shout at the guards who hold me tightly by the arms.

They just walk solid as bricks as I kick and scream like a total lunatic.

They walk through several corridors, turning right, left, stopping and going, until we reach a hallway I have never been down. They stop at a closed door and drop their grip, right as I try to make a run for it, the door opens.

"Come in." A female voice says.

When I get inside I see I am standing in a small control room. In the center of the room is a large conference table, and the lady whose voice it is motions for me to sit down.

I observe her.

She can't be older than forty-five but yet something about her makes her seem almost elderly. She wears a skirt suit, gray, the color of her hair.

"I am special agent Laboe." She smiles a terrible toothy smile that sends tingles down my back, "This is General Nelson. And of course you know General Hawthorne and Sargent Maxwell Hawthorne." That is when I realize the other six eyes staring at me.

"Sargent?" I say looking at Max.

"Yeah I was promoted-" Max gets cut of by Laboe.

"Not important. Rosie I was told that Max asked you a question in Nelson's honor, and that you refused."

"Yes." I tilt my head to the right.

"You see this is a very important topic. A very special assignment, Mockingjay is a big deal! The biggest deal in the arm-" I cut her off.

"You remind me of someone." She stares at me obviously irritated, "Are you Capitol born?" I say pointing at some pictures hanging on the walls of her when she was younger.

"Yes."

"Oh that explains it."

"Explains what?"

"Your obvious ignorance, your coinheadedness."

"Coinheadedness?"

"Yes, President Coin... The previous president of this lovely district, was ignorant as well. She had no idea what us Everdeen-Mellarks have up our sleeve. She was stupid enough to hand my mother a bow and arrow, and then nag at her. She didn't last very long in that fight." I get up and get a closer look at the photos.

Everyone but Max looks confused.

"The moral to my little story, is that this little conversation of ours is most likely going to end in one of us being injured." I smile, "I am guessing it is gonna be you Coinhead."

"On that note-"

"Thank you but no thank you. I don't feel like injuring anyone right now, so I am going to leave."

I walk towards the door.

"This was a wonderful little chat, but really I must go."

They all stare at me amused as Max begins to laugh.

I open the door and walk out sending a wink Max's way.

About half way down the hall I hear the door open again, so I speed up my pace, that is when I hear his laugh.

"Rosie!" He says in between chuckles.

I turn around a big grin on my face.

"Yes Sargent Maxwell Hawthorne." I straighten my face and lower my voice, mocking Coinhead.

We both crack up. I fall to the ground in a laughing fit and he lies beside me struggling not to giggle.

We just lay in the middle of the hallway laughing or heads off for what seems like hours, and when we finally catch our breath Max looks at me.

"Coinhead? Nice one Rose girl." He says smiling and standing up.

"Why thank one Sargent Maxwell." I smile.

"Come on!" He grabs my hand and drags me up stairs that read "To Roof" in the middle.

The cool air greets us like an old friend.

He wraps his arm around me and we walk towards the edge.

"I almost forgot." He squeezes me, "Happy fourteenth birthday."

"Fourteen? Max I am twelve!" I laugh.

"Not anymore." He smiles, "No one told you yet?"

I shake my head.

"You had your thirteenth birthday while you were in a coma." He smiles, "That was exactly a year ago."

"It was?" I ask digging my head a little deeper into his jacket.

"Yep."

"I have never forgotten my own birthday before."

"You never forgot anything until the coma." He says rather know-it-all-ee.

I smack him.

"Well then how old does that make you Sargent Maxwell?"

"Would you stop calling me that?"

"Sorry! It is catchy."

"And sixteen. For your information."

"Ewwwww you are old!"

"Oh babe, you'll be there soon." He laughs.

"Have you seen Johnny lately?" I ask pulling away.

"Yeah. He is a general now you know?"

"No I didn't know."

"The youngest one in our army."

"About the whole army thing."

"Yeah."

"What do you think I should do?"

"I think you should say yes."

"I was afraid of that."

"At least join the army. Don't accept the position yet... Just get used to the lifestyle you'd have."

"How do you think my doctors would react to that? They haven't even released me from the hospital, I still have two weeks!"

"Then wait two weeks." We both go quiet, "Oh I almost forgot!" He pulls a small cardboard box out of his pocket, "Happy Birthday!"

He hands the box to me and right as he does, the sirens sound.

"Come on!" He shouts over the loud ring.

"What's going on?" I ask.

"I have special instructions that if this happens I have to bring you to your old bomb shelter."

"What about Dare?"

"He will be escorted there too! Now come on!"

I do as I am told, and shove the box into my pocket.

He tugs me down several flights of stairs, and through thirteen corridors.

I counted.

He reaches a hallway with five different doors and at the fifth he opens it, inside is a whole other hallway that leads to an iron door at the end. As we walk I avoid gibberish chalk drawings on the floor.

"Who drew those?" I ask.

"You did." He replies smiling, and opening the iron door with a strong push.

We get inside and I am greeted by memories of growing up here.

Memories I forgot long before I even left this place.

I walk to the white kitchen and open the fridge, still filled with all my old favorite juices, now outdated. I open the pantry and find cans of baby food, and breakfast bars. I open the cabinets and find sippy cups and bottles.

I walk towards the kitchen table and look at the heart my dad etched into the wood, the day I learned to draw hearts. I feel my fingers over the bumpy surface and smile.

I walk down a hallway towards my room. Pink and covered in paper with scribbles all over them.

"Unie! I shout running towards a stuffed bunny on the twin bed in the corner." I pick it up and hug him.

"This is where they are going to move you when you get released." Max says, "What's that?" He says pointing at a drawing in the middle of the pink wall.

"I remember that!" I say crawling towards the edge of the bed, "When I was younger I hated not having a window, so I drew one, with my dad, on a bug piece of butcher paper."

"Creative."

"Hello?" I hear a voice say curiously.

"Back here!" Max shouts.

Gale and Dare walk through the doors.

"Rosie!" Dare says running towards me, curls bouncing up and down.

"Hey Dare!" I smile as he hugs me.

Laboe walks through the door with General Nelson.

"I see you got here safely." She says looking around the room.

"Yes, and I would like to apologize for my previous behavior." I walk towards her, "And before I accept the position of Mockingjay, I would like to first earn the position, you could say."

"And how do you suppose you'll do this?" She adds an evil cackle.

"I'd like to join the army, and be in classes with fellow soldiers. I'd like to earn you and General Nelson's respect, before I accept the position."

"Very well. Welcome to the army." She smiles a fake smile and I greet her with a real.
