《Rue's gammes》Chapter 5: Disease

Thresh and I curl up in the sleeping bag that night.
“Just because it’s freezing,” he says.
The next morning, there is an announcement. Claudius Templesmith’s voice is loud and clear and echoes through the cave eerily.
“As usual, these Games would be nothing without a feast or two. Now hold on. Some of you may already be declining my invitation. But this is no ordinary feast. Each of you needs something desperately. Each of you will find that something in a backpack, marked with your district number, at the Cornucopia at dawn. Think hard about refusing to show up. For some of you, this will be your last chance.”
I turn to Thresh.
“We don’t need anything. Neither of us are hurt or infected, and we have enough food for a couple of days.”
He doesn’t say anything.
“Thresh? There isn’t anything, right?”
He reaches into my pocket, and pulls out something I have never seen before. A sort of needle.
He asks me if I know what it is. I don’t.
He asks me if I’ve heard of diabetes. I have.
“This is my insulin pen. After every meal, I have to inject it into my stomach or leg in order for the sugar in my body to digest properly. My family tried to send me one, but I wasn’t allowed to take it as a token in case I used it to stab someone. Fortunately, I managed to get this needle at the bloodbath. There was also a supply of insulin, but I’m running out. That’s what will be in our backpack.”
“How much do you have left?” I ask, panic rising.
“Since the meals are small, I can probably have three more meals. But after that, I won’t be able to survive.”

We have to go to the feast. And I wasn’t planning to let him go alone.
“We have until tomorrow morning,” I say, “We can eat a big meal this evening. Even if it uses up your insoles-”
“Insulin.”
“Yes. Even if it does, we’ll be ready for the feast. If there even is a fight. If we get there early, we can just sneak in and grab the backpack. By the way,” I speak nervously. “Is there any chance I could- you know- catch diabetes from you?”
“No. I was born with it. But also, it doesn’t go away. I don’t have a test kit, so I don’t know when I need food or insulin top ups. I hope there’s one in the backpack as well. I think there will be. The Capitol doesn’t want to see me die quietly; they want me to be killed by someone else. They like a good show.”
The two of us leave the cave to search for food. I am worried we won’t be able to eat any meat because Katniss’s bows were destroyed along with her, but Thresh has a knife. He goes further away from the cave to search for rabbits, but I stay closer and pick the berries I know aren’t poisonous.
We have already skipped breakfast, so we eat lunch. Thresh has managed to find not only a rabbit, but a fox too. We decide to save the meat for dinner, and eat the berries I picked and the remaining food left over from when Katniss and I shared it out.
“Who’s left?” Thresh asks me as we’re finishing.
I count on my fingers.
“One, that girl Katniss called Foxface from District 5. Three, Cato and that other girl…”
“Clove, I think.”
“Three, Cato and Clove. Four, the boy from District 10. Six, me and you.”
“The victors will be us or the Careers. I don’t think any people on their own will live.”
Though he says this, his gaze shows he doesn’t know how well we are going to do in the feast.
But if we don’t succeed at the feast, there’s no way Thresh can survive for much longer.

The Only Real Cultivator
Vincent was relaxing in physics class when he and his entire class were teleported into a vast other world, where everybody called themselves cultivators and fought with magical martial arts. Vincent gained power over plants, allowing him to turn seeds into all sorts of vegetation. He ventures out into this new world filled with phony cultivators to set the record straight. He can make one declaration with absolute certainty, “I am the only real cultivator!” - You will see an overpowered main character with a cheat ability. You will see "comedy". You will see a normal guy who gets teleported to another world. You will see classic wuxia elements like Qi cultivation and alchemy. You will see grammar from a native speaker. You won't see a ruthless MC who kills everybody that offends him. You won't see harem. It's essentially everything I like about light novels, web novels, and wuxia all shoved into one story. If you’d like an unholy mix of overpowered main character, wuxia, fantasy, and LitRPG - give The Only Real Cultivator a try. 6/1/2020 edit: Some bloke plagerized this book and put it on amazon, titling it "Ancient Cultivator." tbh I'm kinda flattered that I'm worth plagerizing. Still, don't buy the book. The whole thing's available here for free.

Four story anthology
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] [participant in #NaNoWriMo] Preface: This fiction will contain four different stories set up as a challenge for myself and to get better at writing. The challenge for royal road writathon is a 55.555 word goal while the nanowrimo challenge is 50.000 words. Reader suggestions is turned on, feel free to point out errors I missed and I'll fix them up! Chasing sun, napping softly: Cultivation/Xianxia genre. Some parts will poke at the ridiculousness of the Xianxia gerne. We follow the life of a magical fox monster, who doesn't like how the cultivation world works. Said beast seems to have more knowledge than is usual for normal magical beasts. In it's infinite wisdom it decided to search for the main character of the cultivation world to have a cozy and safe place beside him. Our fox will act as a "wise beast" to coast along on the main characters rise to greatness, all for peace, happiness and that amazing napping spot in the sun. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing in first person. Comedic effect between talking vaguely and sounding wise. The cost of heroism: A story more centered around fights and mental health of hired mercenaries/heroes. The world is infected with an eldritch corruption. Humans are trying their best to explore and clear out wilderness and the dungeons hiding in them to establish new cities. Lords seek for hired hands to do the professional work. Thanks to the setting, the story will show how awful pasts are the norm and how pragmatic people became thanks to that. People exchange their sanity for riches, fame and gods acceptance. Interpersonal relationships change drastically and quickly. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing grim scenes/imparting a feeling of how grim the world is. Writing fight scenes. Showing different mental states. Describing their influence on people during fights, walks or even after successful or failed campaigns. Who will be the next powerhouse? : A story about a gaming show, it's host Staan and the different participants. Stereotype characters, stereotype backstories, silly challenges and quizzes. The winner of those challenges gets powerups for their power system. Be it magic, ki, psychic power or anything else imaginable and unimaginable to reach the power of gods. The challenges for myself with this story: A softer tone for storytelling. Making the reader smile and enjoy themselves. A different try at slice of life story. I was left behind on earth as my family conquered another world and enjoys riches, but that's okey because I got a cheat too! : Stereotypical Isekai story parody twisted into an Urban Fantasy story. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing over the top and overdramatic scenarios/scenes Writing in first person. Walking into stereotypical scenarios and making them more dramatic/giving them a twist. Different type of humor.
