Calliope and Dean are seated at the table filling shotgun shells with salt and some with iron, when Calliope looks over at Dean and can tell there's something on his mind.
"Hey, what's up?" she asks him.
"This is why I can't get behind God" he says to her.
"What do you mean?" she asks him.
"If he doesn't exist fine, bad crap happens to good people. That's how it is, there's no rhyme or reason-just random, horrible, evil-I get it, okay. I can roll with that, but if he is out there, what's wrong with him? Where the hell is he while all these decent people are getting torn to shreds? How does he live with himself? You know why doesn't he help?" he says to her.
"I ain't touching that with a 10 foot pole" Bobby says to him.
"Yeah" Dean says.
"Found it" Bobby then says, and they look over at him.
"Found what?" Calliope asked.
"The symbol you saw-the brand on the ghosts" he tells her.
"Yeah?" Sam says.
"Mark of the Witness" Bobby says.
"Witness, witness to what?" Sam asks.
"The unnatural, none of them died what you'd call ordinary deaths. See, these ghosts-they were forced to rise. They woke up in agony. They were like rabid dogs, it ain't their fault. Someone rose them....on purpose" he tells them.
"Who?" Sam then asks.
"Do I look like I know? But whoever it was used a spell so powerful it left a mark, a brand on their souls. Whoever did this had big plans. It's called 'the rising of the witness' it figures into an ancient prophecy" Bobby explains.
"Which book is that prophecy from?" Calliope asks him.
"Well, the widely distributed version's just for tourists, you know. But long story short-Revelations. This is a sign, guys" he says.
"A sign of what?" Sam, Dean and Calliope asks all at once.
"The apocalypse" he says.
"Apocalypse? The apocalypse, apocalypse? The four horsemen, pestilence, $5 a-gallon-gas apocalypse?" Dean asks him.
"That's the one, The rise of the witnesses is a—a mile marker" Bobby says to them.
"Okay, so, what do we do now?" Sam asks.
"Road Trip, Grand Canyon, Star Trek Experience, Bunny Ranch" Dean suggests earning a look from Calliope at the mention of the Bunny Ranch, he just smiles and shrugs his shoulders at her.
"First thing first, how about we survive our friends out there?" Bobby suggests.
"Great, any idea aside from staying in this room until Judgement Day?" Dean asks.
"It's a spell" Bobby says pointing to a paper in front of him, "to send the witnesses back to rest, should work" he says.
"It should, or will it?" Calliope asks.
"If I translate it correctly, I think I got everything we need here at the house" Bobby tells her.
"Any chance you got everything we need here in this room?" Dean asks him.
"So you thought our luck was gonna start now all of a sudden, spell's got to be cast over an open fire" Bobby informs him.
"So we need to get to the fireplace in the library" Calliope says.
"Bingo" he says to her.
"That's just not as appealing as a, uh ghost proof panic room, you know" he says to them. The four of them than gather their guns and anything else they might need to fight off the spirits they are going to encounter.

"Cover each other, and aim careful. Don't run out of ammo until I'm done or they'll shred you" Bobby says as they stand by the door, "Ready?" he asks and the three of them nod at him as he unlocks the door, and they step out of the panic room. Holding their guns at the ready they make their way to the stairs when they are greeted by a sprit right away.
"Hey, Dean, you remember me" the spirit of a heavier set man says to Dean.
"Ronald, huh, with the laser eyes, I wish I could say it's good to see you" Dean says to him.
"I am dead, because of you, you were supposed to help me!" Ronald shouts at Dean. Calliope then shoots the spirit before making her way up the stairs.
"Shoot first, talk later" she says as she gets up stairs, and they make their way to the living room. Sam grabs the salt and starts a salt circle by the fireplace, as Dean tries to get the fire started.
"Upstairs, linen closet-red hex box, it'll be heavy" Bobby tells Sam.
"Got it" Sam tells him just as the two girl spirits from earlier appear.
"Bobby" the one girl says as Calliope shots the spirt making it disappear.
"Kitchen, cutlery drawer, it's got a false bottom, hemlock, opium, wormwood" Bobby tells Dean.
"Opium?" Dean asks him.
"Go" Bobby orders him and Bobby leaves, just then the girl spirits appear again. Bobby starts drawing on his desk in chalk.
"Bobby you walked right by us while that monster ate us all up" the one girl says.
"You could have saved us" the other says as Calliope points her gun and shoots both spirits.
Just then the spirits of Calliope's parents appear, "Why didn't you get there in time Callie Lily" he father says as she then shoots both of them making them disappear.
Calliope looks over at Dean who is still rummaging in the drawers in the kitchen when the door to the kitchen slides shut.
"Dean!" she shouts.
"I'm all right, Calliope! Just protect Bobby" he shouts at her through the closed doors. Calliope stands by Bobby in the salt circle, keeping any eye out for the spirits, when they hear gun shots in the kitchen, and after a minute see the kitchen door slide back open. Sam and Dean enter the room giving Bobby all the ingredients he had sent them for. Bobby then begins the spell, as the three of them fight off any spirits that are trying to stop them, constantly letting off gun shots. As Bobby continues the spell, the windows blast open and wind bursts into the room, wrecking the salt line.
They continue firing off at the spirits when the spirit of Henrickson knocks the gun out of Dean's hand as Dean was trying to reload, as Henrickson steps forward Calliope tries to shoot him when she realizes her gun is now empty . Quickly she focuses on a near by iron rod and makes it fly toward Dean, who grabs it and swings, making Henrickson disappear. Just then the spirit of a woman appears, pushing Sam across the room, and trapping him with a desk. Calliope tries to use her abilities to make the desk move but the spirit is too strong for her, as she fees blood drip from her nose.
"Callie!" Dean shouts at her.

"Just cover Bobby" she says as she stops and tries to reload her gun, when her mothers spirit appears, tossing her across the room, and making her crash into a bookshelf. The woman spirit that had Sam pinned went after Bobby, plunging her hand into his back as he drops the bowl he had the spell ingredients in.
"Dean!" Bobby shouts and Dean catches the bowl, "fireplace!" he says to Dean. Dean then takes the bowl and tosses it into the fire, and the flames turn blue, as all the spirits disappear. Bobby falls down, and Calliope slowly stands back up as Sam pushes the desk away from him.
Sam goes over to Calliope, "Hey, you okay?" he asks her concerned.
"Yeah, I'm good, tired but good" she tells him as she stumbles and Sam catches her.
"We could all use some rest" Bobby suggests.
"Not alone" Calliope says as she then sits on the couch.
"Yeah how do we know what ever you just did worked?" Dean asks Bobby.
"Do you really doubt me boy" Bobby says shaking his head at Dean. The four of them clean up the mess from fighting off the spirits. When they are done, they are all tired, Sam lays down on the couch and Calliope takes her usual place beside Dean, who are both laying on the floor, all unsure if the spirits are going to return.
Calliope slowly opens her eyes, seeing Sam and Dean still asleep, when she sees a figure in the kitchen, she gets up from the floor and makes her way toward the figure when she hears noise behind her and sees Dean getting up as well. The two of them then head into the kitchen to see that Castiel was the figure standing in there.
"Excellent job with the witnesses" he says to the two of them.
"You were hip to all this?" Dean asks him.
"I was, uh made aware" he says to them.
"Thanks a lot for the angelic assistance, Dean almost got his heart ripped out" Calliope says.
"But he didn't" Castiel says bluntly.
"I thought Angels were suppose to be guardians. Fluffy wings, halos—you know, Micheal Landon. Not dicks" Dean says to him.
"Read the Bible, angels are warriors of God, I'm a solider" he tells Dean.
"Ok, then why didn't you fight?" Calliope asks.
"I'm not here to perch on your shoulders, we had larger concerns" he says to her.
"Concerns? There were people getting torn to shreds down here! And, by the way, while all this is going on, where the hell is your boss, huh, if there is a God?" Dean asks him.
"There's a God" Castiel says.
"I'm not convinced, 'cause if there's a God, what the hell is he waiting for, huh? Genocide? Monsters roaming the Earth? The freaking apocalypse? At what point does he lift a damn finger and help the poor bastards that are struck down here?" Dean says to Castiel.
"The Lord Works" he begins to say.
"If you say 'mysterious ways' so help me, I will kick your ass. So Bobby was right...about the witnesses. This is some kind of a...sign of the apocalypse" Dean says.
"That's why we're here. Big things afoot" Castiel says.
"Do we really want to know what kind of things?" Calliope asks.
"I sincerely doubt it, but you need to know. The rising of the witnesses is one of the 66 seals" he tells her.
"Okay, I'm guessing that's not a show at Seaworld" Dean says.
"Those seals are being broken by Lilith" Castiel tells him.
"So then it was her that did the spell, she rose the witnesses?" Calliope asks him.
"Mm-hmm and not just here, 20 other hunters are dead" he explains.
"Of course, she picked victims that the hunters couldn't save so that they barrel right after us" Dean says.
"Lilith has a certain sense of humour" Castiel says.
"Well, we put those spirits back to rest" Dean says.
"It doesn't matter, the seal was broken" he tells Dean.
"Why break the seal anyway?" Dean aks.
"You think of the seals as locks on a door" Castiel explains.
"Okay, last one opens and..."Dean says.
"Lucifer walks free" he says to Dean.
"Lucifer, you mean the devil, I just thought he was a story told at Sunday School, he's not real" Calliope says to him.
"You should know that is not true Calliope, but then again you never knew about us until three days ago. Why do you think we're here walking among you now for the first time in 2,000 years?" he says to her and Dean.
"You're here to stop Lucifer, right?" she says to him.
"That's why we've arrived" he says.
"Well...bang up job so far, stellar work with the witnesses, that's nice" Dean says pissed.
"We tried, and there are other battles, other seals. Some we'll win, some we'll lose. This one we lost, our numbers are not unlimited. Six of my brothers died in the field this week. You think the armies of Heaven should just follow you around?" Castiel says to him,
"There's a bigger picture here, you should show me some respect, I dragged you out of hell. I can throw you back in" Castiel says to Dean, mad at him as he then vanishes.
"Well this is all just peachy, the devil Calliope the devil is now real" he says to her.
"Apparantly" she says.
"And why the heck does Castiel keep acting like you know what he is talking about, what are you secretly one of them?" Dean asks her.
"Dean, seriously I never once believed in Angels or in God, especially with our line of work. To be honest I am just as at a loss as you are" she says to him.
"Yeah well not like we are going to get any straight answers from our friendly neighbourhood angel" he says to her.
"Come on, let's just get some more rest, we'll talk to Sam and to Bobby in the morning" she says as she takes his hand and pulls him back to the makeshift floor on the bed.
Dean wakes up later, as does Calliope and they both see Sam already up and walking around getting breakfast. Sam looks at Dean seeing that Dean has something on his mind, "You all right? What's wrong, Dean?" he asks his brother.
"So you got no problem believing in...God and Angels?" Dean asks him.
"No, not really" Sam sasy to him.
"So, I guess that means that you believe in the Devil" Dean says to his brother, as Calliope and Dean explain to him what Castiel had told them.

8 203Blood & Noodles
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] As they always have, humanity hunts the gods roaming the world, craving the supernatural power that flows within their veins. Even a drop is zealously guarded, passed from master to student through the ages. It is with this stolen power that the Blooded - those with divine blood coursing through them - grasp beyond mortality and achieve prestige, power, and greatness. Yet, for every fraction of power gained, thousands perish, slain by the gods' supernatural prowess. But everything is beginning to change. Eight years ago, for the first time in human memory, a god was felled. Part-time chef and full-time nuisance Orvi wants nothing to do with gods. Living in a derelict city, his only concerns are ensuring his adopted family's restaurant is prosperous and how to best beat the neighbourhood boys in a fight. If he's lucky, he might even snag a date with the farmer's daughter at the market. But even though he cares nothing for the gods or their blood, the world won't leave him alone forever. Because to reach godhood, one must first leave their humanity behind. *** The first arc of Blood & Noodles follows the adolescent Orvi as he attempts to navigate his rapidly changing home and - by his own definition - protect his family. The story is told almost entirely in the first-person, from the perspective of a teenager who isn't always the sharpest tool in the shed. There are tragic elements, especially in the current arc. It's character-focused and driven, though the protagonist's shenanigans are backdropped by a world operating independently from him. Orvi's a generally light-hearted character, and though the story veers into darker territory, I also want it to be able to make readers smile. Action sequences, despite the fantastical elements, are meant to be grounded and clearly-conveyed; Orvi is a brawler, not a warrior. I'm trying to write a story that's enjoyable to read and flows nicely, mainly because it's more fun to write. I'm also trying to improve my writing, so any feedback, whether positive or negative, is welcome!
