SEASON 6 Ep: 3
JAGGED LITTLE TAPESTRY
Haley sat alone in her and Sam's apartment with yet another pregnancy test. She paced back and forth waiting for the 10 minutes to be up. "Why do the things that shouldn't take long, are always so prolonged?" She muttered to herself. She heard her phone timer buzz, and went to look at the test. "Still negative." She sighed.
Haley and Sam had been trying for a baby for the past few months. They had been keeping it on the down low, from their friends, because they didn't want to announce false news.
Haley let out a frustrated groan. "Why do I keep getting negatives?" She asked aloud. She had kept her pregnancy tests hidden from Sam, because she didn't want to get him excited about false positives.
"Well I'll have to call the doctor, and go for a visit." She thought, wiping her frustrated tears. She scolded herself, hoping it wasn't her that was the issue. It wasn't Sam, he already made sure it wasn't him. It would be her. She didn't like how this was going, and she had already tried over 8 pregnancy tests. No solutions or results satisfied her quite yet. She sighed, before wrapping the tests up and throwing them in the trash, and heading out to the school.

{ONE HAND IN MY POCKET/FEEL THE EARTH MOVE-SUNG BY SANTANA LOPEZ & BRITTANY S. PIERCE}
Everyone clapped after the girls finished performing their perfect mashup. Haley couldn't help but smile, knowing what was coming next.
"And that is how a mashup is done, everyone!" Rachel clapped, about to stand up, when Santana stopped her.
"No, actually, this is. Britt, can you take a seat? So, I figured that this is as good a place as any to ask you this question. Mainly because it's going to really upset all the single guys and gals in here. But I want to mashup with you forever, Britt. Some people love someone because they make them a better person and that's not why I love you, because you've always just wanted me to be myself. You're my favorite person in the whole world and we're a big deal, you know? I don't want to live my life without my one true love." Santana said, opening up a ring box, as everyone, including Brittany gasped. "Brittany S. Pierce, will you marry me?"
"Wait, what is happening?" Roderick questioned.
"This kind of thing happens in here all the time. Just go with it." Puck smiled.
"Oh my God, I would love to!" Brittany nodded, after letting the pure shock settle in.
Everyone clapped as Santana slid the ring on Brittany's finger, and the girls embraced in the middle of the room.
"I'm sorry. I just have to speak now or forever hold my peace." Kurt spoke up.
"Normally you save that kind of thing for the wedding." Quinn laughed calmly.
"Did you learn nothing from me and Blaine? We're too you to get married. All of us!" Kurt said angrily.
"I'm sorry Kurt, but Sam and I are married, and we're doing just fine." Haley pointed out. "Please, let's just celebrate the happily engaged couple."

"You guys are perfect together." Tina smiled.
"Thank you, Tina, and Haley." Santana said.

Haley sat anxiously in the doctor's office, impatiently waiting for the doctor to come with the results. Good or bad, Haley wanted them over with.
As soon as the doctor entered, Haley snapped out of her day dream, she was having.
"Haley, you know how we ran some tests almost a week ago?"
"Yes, I do." Haley smiled, clearly very stressed.
"Well, there's some news, from the test results." The doctor said.
"Good or bad? I just want to get it over with." Haley said, apprehension interlaced in her voice.
"Well, here's the gist. You are more than halfway close to infertile. Not right on the exact line, but there's a rare chance that you'll ever be pregnant. That doesn't mean all the doors are closed, you have options. God willing a miracle happens, but there's about a 15% chance you'll be able to get pregnant. I'm really sorry Haley. I hate being the bearer of bad news." The doctor explained, as Haley sighed.
"Wow, uh...great." Haley clapped her hands together. "Well, not great...this news is going to take a little bit longer to digest." She smiled, sadly as the doctor sent her a sympathetic look.
"Well, Haley, I'll leave you to think about it. You may leave when you feel ready. I'm very sorry again." The doctor said, as Haley sent her a polite nod.
"Thanks." She said, as she decided to leave right away. She needed to get air, and get out of there.
As soon as Haley got outside, she heard her phone ring. It was Sam. "Oh god, I can't deal with that right now." She said, ignoring the phone call and walking to the park.
Once she sat down, she called Quinn and Santana and told them the news. "So yeah, that's basically the gist of it." Haley finished, holding back tears.
"Awe Haley...I'm so sorry. I know how badly you wanted kids." Santana said on the other end of the line.
"It isn't the end of the world honey." Quinn added. "Just take some deep breaths okay? You're going to be okay."
"Thanks girls." Haley said hanging up, as she sniffled. "Frick, don't cry Hay." She told herself, after several phone calls.

She sat waiting for Kurt at the Lima Bean.
He smiled when he saw her waiting. She sent him a weak smile in return.
"Hey, got your text...what's up? Are you doing okay?" He asked
"I'm not doing okay..." Haley said, as Kurt frowned.
"What happened Hay?"
"Well..." she began, going on to explain the whole doctors visit to Kurt and the disappointing results. "So you know? I don't know what to feel. I've kept trying with the pregnancy tests. I think I still will...but I feel like it's my fault you know? I hate when things aren't in my control, and now I feel like Sam will resent me and..."
"Woah, Haley... calm down. Breathe. Take three deep breaths." Kurt instructed her, taking her hands in his.

"You are going to overcome this challenge. You are surrounded by so many people who love you and will continue to support, encourage and accept you no matter what happens. None of this is your fault, nor will it ever be. We can't choose our bodies and how they function, they have their own system and decisions. I hate to break it to you, and feel so sorry. You are never going to be a failure, you're the opposite. And I don't believe Sam could be mad at you. Trust me, he'll understand. It's a hard life, but we're all experiencing it together." Kurt finished ranting, as he wiped Haley's tears falling down from her face.
"Thank you so much, Kurt. I don't know what I'd do without your reality check ins, support, advice, encouragement and constant chats. I needed this today, before I go break the news. So thank you for giving me a boost of encouragement, and confidence to break the news to Sam."
"Anything for my best friend. I love you so much Haley. And everything is going to be okay." He said, pulling her into a hug.
"I hope so." She muttered as they said goodbye, and she stopped for a breather, before she began to walk back to her and Sam's apartment. It was time to break the news.
----
Haley sighed quietly as she played around with her food, while her and Sam sat eating dinner that evening.
Noticing her quiet demeanor, Sam spoke up. "Hay, what's up? Are you okay? You've been really quiet since I got home..."
"Um..." She began, not knowing how to break the news. "Do you mind if we go sit on the couch? I have some news." Haley said, as Sam nodded, letting her pull him to the living room.
"Does this have something to do with us trying for a baby?" Sam asked, concerned, as she nodded.
"Yeah, so I've been taking pregnancy tests the past few weeks. Each came out negative, so I decided to pay a visit to the doctors. After taking some tests-not pregnancy tests, I received my results today." Haley said, as Sam nodded, encouraging her to go on. "The news was 85% bad and 15% good...so um...the doctor said that I'm close to infertile, not on the exact line, but about 85% there, with a 15% chance that I could get pregnant, god willing a miracle will happen. It's slim, but you know, there's a lot of options..." She explained, her voice cracking, as Sam noticed her beginning to break.
"Hay, come here." He whispered, pulling her into a hug, as she cried into his chest. His heart broke, at the sound of her heartbreaking and painful cries.
"I-I'm so sorry...I just feel that this is all my fault although, I mean what isn't?" She asked, trying to make a sad joke. "I really wanted to give you biological kids, but it won't be the same, since we have such a slim chance. I d-don't know why I always get my hopes up....but right now, I just want a miracle to happen..." She sniffled, as Sam cupped her face to make her look at him.
"Hayley, look, look at me." He said, as she sighed, sadly, but looked at him. "None of this is your fault, don't apologize... Life has its ups and downs, we're going to get through this. I'll be here with you every step of the way." Sam began, as he gently grabbed her left hand with her wedding ring on it.
"You see Hay? When I slipped this ring on your finger a few months ago, I made a vow to be the person you could run to, the person who would listen and understand all your adversities and concerns, the person you could cry to. I'm not going to break that promise okay? I'll always accept you for everything that you are, even if we can't always have what we want. Life isn't fair, I know it's hard to accept, but you just have to. No matter what, I love you so much, and I'm going to do anything and everything I can to get a smile back on your face. We will discuss options later, but for now, just breathe. Take three deep breaths." Sam instructed, as he helped her breathe. "That's it. Yeah, there we go." He sighed as she returned back to her normal breathing pace, still letting the tears fall.
"I love you too, Sam." She sighed, as he looked at her, while rubbing circles on her back. "And I'm so glad you're here for me, and yes, I know it'll take a while to sink in, but it's just another bump in the road." Haley explained.
"Exactly...See...Everything is going to turn out fine in the end Hay. And if things are meant to work out, they will. Trust the timing. For now, you have me, and your loving and genuinely caring friends. We are going to be here to guide and help you every step of the way. We will always be here to support, encourage and help you."
"Thank you." Haley sniffled, as Sam pressed his lips to hers, wrapping his arms around her, as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
After they pulled away, he let her lean against him while he ran his hand through her hair, singing Lucky softly to calm her down. After a while, he looked down, realizing she had fallen asleep.
He sighed. "You're going to be okay. You don't deserve this but I know it's going to work itself out. I'll be here always. There's nothing I wouldn't do to see that beautiful smile on your face." He whispered, pressing a kiss to head, after he had covered them with a blanket. He slowly found himself falling asleep not long after.
They knew that they would figure this little setback out. With Haley's strength, and Sam's words of comfort and encouragement, they would be okay. Sam knew it, and he knew that deep down, Haley did too.

8 116Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
