《Falling (A Sam Evans Fan Fiction)》Grilled Cheesus

Finn lifted his hand before Mr. Schue could even start the week's lesson. "Mr. Schue? I have something I have to say." he said, as he stood up and walked toward the middle of the room. Once he was in front of the group, he rambled with his words which made Haley confused. "What crazy thing is he coming up with now?" she wondered.
"Oh, my God, he's coming out." Puck whispered, loud enough for the group to hear.
"Why, yes." Finn responded, unbothered. "There is a man who's sort of recently come into my life and that man is Jesus Christ."
"That's way worse."
"And I know there's others in here who dig him too. And so I thought maybe this week we could pay tribute to him in music. You know, pay tribute to Jesus."
"Sorry, uh, but if I wanted to sing about Jesus, I'd go to church." Kurt responded, and Haley agreed. "And the reason I don't go to church is because most churches don't think very much of gay people. Or women. Or science."
"He's right." Haley added in agreement with Kurt's response.
"I don't see anything wrong with getting a little church up in here.: Mercedes added.
"I agree." Quinn nodded her head. "I've had a really hard year, and I turned to God a lot for help. I, for one, wouldn't mind saying thanks."
"Thanks for what?" Santana scoffed at her friend's response. "That didn't come out of a lizard baby?"
"Tana be nice." Haley warned quietly, not wanting to deal with more outbursts.
"Whenever I pray, I fall asleep." Brittany interjected.
"Well, guys maybe our song selections don't have to be about Jesus." Mr. Schue tried to convince the group. "We could do songs about spirituality.
Noticing Puck making a face, Finn sent him a look and harshly asked. "You got a problem with Jesus?"
"Oh, I got no problem with the guy. I'm a total Jew for Jesus." Puck defended himself. "He's my number one Hebe. What I don't like seeing is people using J-Money to cramp everybody else's style' cause it seems to me that true spirituality --- or whatever you want to call it --- is about enjoying the life that you've been given. I see God every time I make out with a new chick."
"Really though?" Haley asked in disbelief.
"Okay, okay. That doesn't make any sense." Rachel said, rolling her eyes. "In fact, it's stupid."
"Are you calling Mr. Billy Joel stupid?" Puck challenged her as he got up to grab the spare guitar. "At this time I'd like to continue my streak of doing only songs by Jewish artists. Hit it."
{Only the Good Die Young-sung by Puck}
As he sang his song, everyone gradually began to get into it, either singing or dancing. Everyone, except for Kurt who Haley noticed wasn't too thrilled about this week's lesson. Haley wasn't a hundred percent thrilled either, but she continued to jam to the music.

When the news of Burt's heart attack had spread through the group, they knew they had to be there for Kurt and even though Haley, Santana, Brittany, Quinn could be bitchy, they very well knew to be respectful about what happened.
"Hey, Kurt. We're really sorry about your dad's heart attack. Santana said gently as she approached Kurt with Brittany, Quinn and Haley behind her.
"Just know that you can talk to me about anything. I'm here for you." Haley added, smiling sympathetically at one of her close friends.

"Thanks girls." he replied, seemingly emotionless and refusing to make direct eye contact.
"I did a book report on heart attacks if you want to give it to the doctor." Brittany said, giving him her colorful handmade book. "I got knocked down an entire letter grade 'cause it was written in crayon." She added innocently.
Kurt was hesitant at the gesture. Finally he thanked her for it and took it from her. Haley walked to sit next to him and gave him a reassuring side hug.
Finn suddenly came barging into the choir room. "What the hell happened?" he asked, getting right in Kurt's face. Haley was quick to gently get him out of Kurt's personal space. "Give him a damn break." she whispered to Finn.
"My dad's in the hospital." Kurt answered, surprisingly calm.
"I know. My mom just called me." Finn responded
"I'm sorry, Finn. It didn't occur to me to call you, because he's not your father."
"Yeah, well he's the closest I'm ever going to get, okay? I know it may not look like what everybody else has but I thought we were sort of a family. Look, I guess I just... I didn't like overhearing other people talking about it in gym class."
Kurt just nodded, before taking his bag off his chair and offering him the spot. Finn sighed, but complied to the gesture as Mr. Schue walked in.
"And in fairness to me, he is also like a dad to me. The dad I never had, but the one I needed growing up." Haley whispered to Kurt, who smiled sympathetically at her.
"Hey, guys." Mr. Schue started off. "Our thoughts are all with Kurt and I know it's sort of hard to really focus on anything else..."
Mercedes interjected. "Mr. Schue?"
"Yeah?"
"I've been struggling, trying to figure out what I wanted to say to Kurt all day and I realize I don't want to say it, I want to sing it." She continued, as she got up to walk to the middle of the room. "This song is about being in a very dark place and turning to god. It's a spiritual song, Mr. Schue. Is that okay?"
"It's fine." Mr. Schue responded.
"Tina, Quinn, can you help me out, please?" She asked as both girls got into their places behind her.
{I Look to You by Quinn, Mercedes, and Tina}
"Thank you, Mercedes." Kurt said. "Your voice is stunning, but I don't believe in God."
"Wait, what?" Tina asked.
"You've all professed your beliefs. I'm just stating mine." Kurt defended himself before continuing. "I think God is kind of like Santa Claus for adults. Otherwise, God's kind of a jerk, isn't he? I mean, he makes me gay, and then has his follwers going around telling me it's something that I chose as if someone would choose to be mocked every single day of their life. And right now I don't want a heavenly father. I want my real one back."
"But Kurt, how do you know for sure? I mean, you can't prove that there's no God." Mercedes said.
"You can't prove that there isn't a magic teapot floating around on the dark side of the moon with a dwarf inside of it that reads romance novels and shoots lightning out of it's boobs but it seems pretty unlikely, doesn't it?" argued Kurt.
"Is God an evil dwarf?" Brittany asked, clearly confused. Haley gave her a small smile.

"We shouldn't be talking like this. It's not right." Quinn shook her head forcefully.
"I'm sorry, Quinn." Kurt told her, genuinely apologetic. "But you all can believe whatever you want to. But I can't believe something I don't. I appreciate your thoughts but I don't want your prayers." With that, he soon walked out of the room. Before the lesson could be continued, Haley walked to the middle of the room.
"If I may add. We all have our own beliefs. We choose to believe what we want, and who we want. We don't need to believe any god up there." she gestured to the ceiling. "Just have a little grace for him, that's all I'm asking. You don't need to get up in his face about who he can or can't believe." After her rant, she walked out of the room leaving the group in silence to contemplate what she said.
---
"Guys, I'm very sorry, but we cannot do any more spirituality songs." Mr Schue announced the next morning.
"Last week we were too sexy. This week we're too religious. We can't win." Tina said.
"Now I know what Miley feels like." Brittany sighed.
"The real tragedy here is that I found the most perfect spiritual song to sing this week and now it's been torn away from me like Sophie's daughter." Rachel complained.
"Oh just be glad you get the spotlight 24/7." Haley replied, fed up with Rachel. Santana leaned over towards Haley. "Good one." they discreetly high fived.
"Guys, you can still sing whatever songs you like that sum up your feelings about God, about spirit. You just can't do it on school time." Mr. Schue clarified.
"I hope you're happy, Kurt." snapped Santana, causing both Haley and Kurt to roll their eyes.
"Having the week of my life, actually."
"Guys leave him alone. He's going through enough as it is." Haley defended him as he sent her a grateful smile, which made some of the group scoff or roll their eyes.
"Look, Kurt, we're sympathetic to what you're going through but Miss Sylvester isn't gonna do anyone any good." Mercedes added.
"It's doing me some good." Kurt suddenly snapped. "Now I don't have to sit around listening to all you mental patients talk about how there's a God when I know there isn't one."
----
Haley stood with Quinn, Santana and Brittany and the rest of the Cheerios as they cheered on the side of the field. A little bit distracted, it wasn't until she saw Sam being tackled to the ground. She began to freak out as she saw coach Beiste and a medic run towards him. She heard Beiste yelling at Finn. "Congratulations. You're the quarterback again." she said as she threw the ball towards him.
"Aldrin, get over here now." Complying, Haley gave her pom-poms to Brittany. She then turned to Quinn and said. "I'll be back, you keep the rest of the group under control." Quinn nodded. "I will." she replied.
With that Haley, ran towards the coach. "Yes, coach Beiste?"
"You two are friends right?" Haley nodded. "Good, go with him and make sure that his parents get notified." She nodded. "Will do."
As she approached the medics who were taking him to the nurse office, she observed how Sam would grimace every time he moved. Taking a deep breath, she spoke up.
"Are your parents here?" He responded by shaking his head.
"No, my dad is working and my mom is with my siblings at home."
"Okay, well, I need to call at least one of them to notify them what happened. Can I call your mom?" She asked. He nodded.
After receiving his locker number and combination, Haley went to his locker to retrieve his phone from his bag, avoiding looking at too much. She didn't want to violate his privacy or whatsoever. Once she got his phone, she ran back to the office. After receiving his password, which turned out to be his birthday, she found his mom's number in his contacts. When his mom answered, she kindly introduced herself, informing her that her son had been injured during the football game.
A few minutes later, the medics had finished bandaging Sam's shoulder and gave him some painkillers. After they left, Haley sent him a sympathetic smile as she gave him his phone and stood beside his bed trying at all costs to only look at his face.
"So your mom's coming and your dad is already at your house with your siblings. When she arrives, she will take you to the hospital."
"Thank you." He sent her a sad smile, making her sigh.
"I'm so sorry. I know how proud and excited you were for the quarterback position."
"Yeah, well some things don't work. Maybe it wasn't meant to be." He attempted to shrug, wincing. "Finn was the one who suggested we change the play."
At hearing this, she had a realization. "Oh..."
He continued. "I should've listened to my guts. I knew changing the play was a horrible idea. I know that--that Finn is still so crucial to the team and in fairness to them, he did win last year as the quarterback. And the previous year so I just..."
Before he could continue his rant, Haley interjected. "Listen, it happens, okay? It isn't your fault though. I know for a fact that you'll be back in no time. The position is still going to remain open for you. I mean, Coach Beiste wouldn't give you the position for nothing, right?" She asked, trying to lighten the negativity flowing through the room.
"I guess you're right." He smiled at her, and she returned the gesture. Another question went through his mind. "Why did you come with me?"
"Coach Beiste must have seen us talking the past few days...she seemed to know we were friends." She explained. "She asked me to make sure that your parents were informed.
"If you want me to go, I'll go now." she said as she began to walk towards the door.
"No! I'm actually enjoying the company, in all honesty. He said.
"Good to know." she smiled at him.
They continued to talk, resulting in him showing up more impressions, and receiving laughs from Haley, and them getting to know each other. She didn't want to burden him with any of her struggles, so she kept her side of the story light.
Eventually Mrs. Evans found the two of them chatting and laughing away. She made herself known by clearing her throat, as she walked into the room, making Haley jump.
She laughed as Haley stood up. "You seem pretty good to me, sweetie." she said gently to her, making Haley feel more at ease as she sent his mom a smile. "You must be Haley Aldrin, right?" she recalled the earlier phone call. "Thank you for calling."
"It was no problem, Mrs. Evans, happy to help." Haley responded.
"Oh please call me Mary, sweetie." She laughed lightly, making Haley laugh as well, before looking down at Sam, and making sure he was alright.
Haley smiled before she asked. "So you are good? I can go back to the cheer squad?"
Sam agreed and replied. "Yes. Thanks for the help, Hayley."
"It was no problem. I genuinely hope you feel better and your shoulder heals. Also it was a pleasure meeting you Mary." she turned to acknowledge the woman beside him.
"Same to you." she responded.
Both Sam and Mary watched as she left the room, before Mary turned to look at him. "So...this Haley girl seems nice." she started, sending him a knowing look.
"Please don't even start." he rolled his eyes, already knowing that his mom would be on his back with hints and questions. "She's a good friend. Actually, the first I made here, so don't scare her away. Please?"
"I could never scare her. She's too kind and has a genuinely beautiful heart ." she replied with a sigh, as he sent her a pointed look. "Alright, let's get you to the hospital then." she added, not mentioning that she could tell that behind Haley's eyes she could see her pain and struggle.
