《》Chapter 2

I storm into my room and flop onto my bed in exhaustion. Milo and Atlantis follow behind me and sit on the blue bean bags by my bed. They've been my best friends since diaper days, and have always had my back. They definitely helped me out on Tuesday when Gray decided to be stupid, even though Milo can't fight and Atlantis is TOO eager to fight.
"I can't believe that jerk! I had to go through a week of lunch detention because Gray threw a tantrum," I yell into my pillow. "Well, at least it's Friday so we don't have to worry about it anymore." Milo says, trying to calm me down. He did have a point; we had just come back from school for the day and besides a few arguments during practice Gray didn't try anything else this week.
"I guess you're right, but my parents weren't really thrilled to hear about me getting in trouble. If only Gray didn't-"
"Uuuugh, enough about Gray!" Atlantis groans, sinking lower into the bean bag. "I swear every time he does something to you it's all you talk about. Let's move on to something else."
"Like what?" I say.
"Well, next Wednesday we finally get to find out what our sub genders are!" she says.
Suddenly, I'm in a better mood and sit up on my bed. "Oh, right! I'd forgotten about that." Another thing that happened this week was that everyone at our school had done testing for our sub gender placement. Since we're all 12-13 years old puberty will be starting soon, so we have to do testing to know what we are and prepare for what we'll need in the future. Without this system and modern technology, we'd be like our grandparents and have to wait until we started showing. Which usually ended in a lot of unprepared people going into heat or rut randomly.
Other than submitting DNA and blood samples, we also did physical assessments to get a guess at what we could be. I did well enough to be an alpha or delta, and (of course) Gray was placed as an alpha. But we all won't know for sure until lab results come back on Wednesday.
"I'm going to be a delta; I can just feel it! There's no way I could be anything less with this type of fighting spirit," Atlantis says, kissing her non-existent biceps.
"Yeah, well they said I could be either alpha or delta with my speed and strength so be prepared," I say.
"Oh please, I can still kick your butt even if you end up being alpha." She's right, she could. Her dad trains the pack's warriors and owns the martial arts dojo that I go to. She's a belt higher than me right now, but that doesn't mean I'm going down without a fight!

"Bring it on!" I say, jumping to my feet. Soon we're fighting and trying to pin each other to the floor. A couple of times I get close to beating her, but she somehow skillfully maneuvers out of my grasp. Poor Milo has to move out of the way to avoid being hit. "You trouble-makers better not be fighting up there!" my mom yells from down stairs. We immediately stop fighting and sit back down. I can't afford to get in trouble again, she already took away my sketch book because of Tuesday's incident.
"Anyways, what do you think you'll get Milo?" Atlantis asks, trying to catch her breath.
"Honestly, I think I'm going to end up being an omega," he says nonchalantly with a shrug.
Atlantis and I look at each other with concerned expressions. We always joked about how Milo couldn't fight but to assume that he was an omega was a bit out there. "Don't say that dude, at least say that you'll be beta," I say.
"Come on Eli think about it. I'm super nice and nurturing, I can barely defend myself, I have a round and chubby face, and you both think that I'm the "mother" of the group. Plus, I'm really good at taking care of the pups at the pack nursery center."
He does have a point. "Don't worry your pretty little head Milo, we won't know for sure what you'll be until Wednesday and those traits could just be what makes you, you." Atlantis says. "I'm not really worried, just coming to terms with reality. Just like how you can feel that your meant to be a delta, I can feel that I'm meant to be an omega; and I'm okay with that." Milo says. He looks so calm and sure about this but I can't help but worry. While Atlantis and I don't really care what Milo will end up being I know that there are kids at school who like to bully omegas, and even gammas, to dangerous lengths. And it will only get worse once we enter high school.
"Well no matter what, me and Atlantis will always be there to help and protect you from any threat." I say. Atlantis nods in agreement, looking as serious as I do. "Thanks guys, that means a lot." Milo says, looking on the verge of tears. We both hug him for a while, and tell him that we'll be there every step of the way. We even crack jokes about how he'll give birth to cuter pups then us since he has an adorable round face and strawberry hair. He gives his signature soft laugh at that and moves his glasses to wipe his eyes. However, deep down I do worry about what's to come next if Milo is an omega. Obviously, I would rip apart anyone who tries to hurt him but there will always be those who look down on him in the pack. Hopefully he'll have a mate who can protect him from harm in the future.

"Welp, since you think that you're going to be an omega, you're definitely coming with us to the dojo from now on." Atlantis smirks. Milo groans "You know I'm too fragile and lazy to do physical activity."
"Fragile, no. Lazy, absolutely. Which is why I will literally drag you all the way there if I have to."
"I'd like to see you tr-" Milo doesn't even finish his sentence before Atlantis grabs him by the ankles and drags him out of the room. I just laugh and follow after them. What am I going to do without these two?
*****
It's Wednesday.
It's the last class of the day, English. I really shouldn't be so nervous but for some reason I am. Which is bad since I fiddle or pick at my clothes when I'm nervous. At this point I'm surprised that my shirt is still intact considering how much I've been pulling at its loose strings. I suddenly feel a painful flick on my shoulder, and glare at Atlantis sitting next to me, who tries to look all innocent. I guess this is her way of saying 'Stop tearing up your shirt weirdo', but it's not MY fault that I'm somewhat freaking out on the inside. I mean what if I end up being a beta? Then Gray will call me "basic beta bitch", or something like that, for the rest of my life! Meanwhile he'll be running the place as head alpha, and ruin our pack with his reckless attitude. Ugh, I shouldn't be worrying about myself anyways, since Milo is in another class right now probably finding out that he's an omega. Hopefully there aren't any jerks in there with him, although I highly doubt it since it's a dance class.
"Okay class quiet down. I know your all very excited to find out what your sub gender is. But I want to remind you that no matter what you get your all still equals in this pack and should treat each other as such." Even though our teacher is saying this I can tell that even she doesn't truly believe it, which doesn't make me feel any better.
I look over at Atlantis who gives me a thumbs up for good luck. We're not allowed to open our packets until the last person is handed theirs. Man, it feels like our teacher is purposefully taking her time passing them out as the seconds go by. As soon as the last student is given their packet, we all start tearing them open, eager to see the results. I scan over my papers quickly.
No.
I hear some kids cheering and celebrating with their friends while some toss there packets away, probably those who ended up being beta. Some kids say nothing, start crying, or try to not react at all which most likely means that they ended up being gamma or omega. I reread my papers.
No. Way.
"YES! I'm a delta! Aw man, I can't wait to tell pops when he gets home," Atlantis says beside me. "Hey dude what did you get?" Atlantis turns to me but her face goes from super happy to very concerned when she looks at me. I just sit there clutching the papers in my shaking hands, my face showing a look of fearful shock. Rereading and rereading, again and again.
There's NO way.
"Dude? Hey, what's wrong?" Atlantis asks. I just hand her the papers, still processing what I just read. She reads over my papers and covers her mouth in shock. The bell rings and everyone starts to leave the classroom and head home, even the teacher.
THERE'S. NO. FUCKING. WAY.
"Maybe, they made a mistake? Although mistakes rarely happen, maybe you're that 0.1% that got the wrong papers?" Atlantis say, trying to cheer me up, but it doesn't work. And for some reason, deep down I just know that the results are correct, but I don't except them. Now we're the only ones in the classroom, I can hear other students in the hall talking to their friends about their results. Most are celebrating while some are arguing or even crying. Atlantis stands up. "Come on dude, lets head home. I'm sure Milo is waiting for us at the bus loop." I slowly stand up and she hands me back the papers.
As we leave the classroom, I take one more look at the papers, there's a bunch of science mumbo jumbo and info on what I may need in the future but one thing stands out clearly to me. In the box labeled "SUB GENDER TITTLE:" it shows one word stamped into it.
OMEGA.
