《INVITE ME ROUND》Chapter 33

"Hey sweetie, tell me! Is she good in bed?"

You startled and gave Joyce a confused look as you quickly walked past her.

"What was that?" Harmony smirked.

"I'm talking about the picture you took with Lilith." Suddenly Joyce stood in front of you.

"What are you talking about?" you asked more quietly as Mr. Phillips the principal walked past you giving you a wink.

Joyce typed something on her phone and finally showed you a photo. It was the photo Lilith took when you first stayed at her place.

"We did not-"

"Of course you didn't," she replied sarcastically.

"Where did you get the photo from?"

"See you later. You're coming, aren't you?", she ran away grinning.

"I can't believe she shared the photo. Why would she do that?" You stopped in the middle of the schoolyard.

"Hey, I thought things were going well with you and Evelyn!" Harmony pulled you towards the entrance.

"They are going well. It's been a while since Lilith and I took that photo." Rolling your eyes, you headed off to your first class.

***

You saw Evelyn through the glass of the front door and gave her a surprised look.

"I have detention." You lied.

Scarlett made a face.

"Seriously? But we wanted to go to the cafeteria together..."

"Yeah, sorry. I screwed up," you replied.

"All right then, see you tomorrow. Maybe Sophie would like to go with me," she said in a sad tone.

You felt a little guilty because you had promised to keep Scarlett company.

"What are you doing here?" You smiled, being pleased to see Evelyn.

"I'll pick you up from school," she took your bag and opened the door of her car. You felt the need to ask her something that was bothering you.

"I've been waiting for you yesterday." After Lilith claimed that Evelyn's son was at the party, Evelyn disappeared. But Lilith lied because she wanted to spend some time with you.

"Forgive me I brought my son home," she answered immediately.

She lied.

He wasn't even there.

"But he-", you stopped.

She looked at you curiously.

"Is he alright?"

"He is," you saw someone out of the corner of your eye.

Evelyn was a dear person.

Lilith had doubted her the night before. You couldn't believe there were people like Lilith who didn't want to see the truth.

But Lilith is Lilith. She's probably not used to people who were as loving as Evelyn.

"Look at this..." you looked at Evelyn and followed her gaze.

Your eyes met Lilith and Lucy who were just getting into Lilith's black car.

Lilith noticed you because she looked at you. It felt wrong seeing the two of them together. But like Lilith said, you were just friends.

"Wow," Evelyn clapped her hands as Lucy kissed Ms. Ritter on the lips.

You rolled your eyes.

"These women really don't know anything about love." Evelyn put her hand on your shoulder.

"Look at the way they're kissing– without any feelings...", she still watched them from the window of her car.

Maybe they had feelings, but for someone else.

"Can we go please?" You closed your eyes and leaned back.

It would all be easier if you just went to the cafeteria with Scarlett.

During the car drive you continued being silent. You were grateful that Evelyn hadn't asked any questions, it was better that way. She was probably busy thinking about her son.

"How do you feel about Ms. Ritter?"

"She's your teacher, isn't she?"

"Y/n?"

"Because I feel like she's weird."

"She's new at school, isn't she?"

"Is she your professor?"

"She's my substitute teacher." You took a deep breath after getting the words out of your mouth.

"Mhm interesting," Evelyn sounded thoughtful.

"If I have to be honest with you..."

"I don't think she's as innocent as she looks," she whispered.

Your eyes widen.

You couldn't get a single word out for the rest of the ride.

They were so alike.

***

"Thank you for taking the time," you barely managed to accommodate Evelyn.

She insisted that you meet her at the evening. You didn't know why but you guessed she just wanted to spend time.

You walked down the dark empty streets and nobody said a word for a long time. You thought of a topic to talk about but the only thing you could think of would be Lilith or Evelyn's son.

"Just look at this building...

So many illegal things happen in there." You finally said as you stopped at the house where the parties used to take place.

"I wish everyone would be like you.

I can't stand this place.

But you know, my son...", she lowered her gaze to the floor.

Lilith had told you that Evelyn's son had been her patient. But Evelyn rarely spoke about it.

"You said something about Lilith earlier. What did you mean?" you asked out of curiosity.

"She's a little weird, isn't she?" she murmured.

"Why?" you hoped she would open up to you.

"Don't you think she is kinda strange?" Evelyn asked while staring at the building.

"No," you also looked over at the building.

"What a waste of time..." you noticed some people lying on the lawn.

They hardly moved.

"Mhm," Evelyn sounded gloomy.

"I want to go in for one last time before I never set foot in this house again. I'll just throw the envelopes away." You thought of the invitations that regularly lay on your bed. Presumably Harmony made sure you got them.

"Envelopes?" Evelyn looked at you.

"Yes, the invitations for the party. Crazy isn't it? An idiot must have came up with that idea." You thought of Mr. Eastwood.

"Invitations? Who gets these invitations?" You eyed Evelyn.

"Not everyone. I don't know why I was chosen..." you said softly.

"Why do you ask? Do you get the envelopes too, or are you secretly stalking your son?" you asked.

"You're a sweet mother. I wish my parents would take care of me like you take care of...what's your son's name?"

"Y/n?"

"Hm?"

"You trust me, don't you?" She looked at you seriously.

"Of course," you assured her.

"Good," she nodded.

"Let's go in." Evelyn said and took you by the hand before crossing the street.

Lilith might have been right.

Evelyn acted really weird.

***

"Wait a second but don't move." Evelyn squeezed your hand before leaving.

You wanted to follow her but another woman disturbed you.

"Be kind dear, pass me the pack of cigarettes from the bag over there."

"Lilith?"

The woman turned around and widened her eyes in surprise when she saw you.

"Oh Y/n I'm sorry I didn't recognize you," she said sheepishly.

Before she could get any closer you reached into the small bag that was next to you and rummaged around.

You felt something odd-feeling and took a quick look at it.

But when you saw a small revolver you shrieked softly.

The hand that rested on your shoulder made you twitch again.

"Did you find my pack of cigarettes?" You trembled when you heard Lilith's voice. Her mouth was very close to your ear.

You shook your head and closed the bag in silence.

"What did you find then?" Her hands were now on your upper arms.

"Nothing," you whispered, scared.

"Are you sure?" This time she whispered right in your ear and you shuddered.

"Mhm," you stood motionless.

"What are you doing?" You heard Evelyn's voice and closed your eyes in relief.

"I-" you stuttered, scared to death.

"Lilith. What are you doing?" Evelyn asked again.

Lilith let go of you and you rushed to Evelyn, standing behind her.

"Good evening to you, Ms. Carter," Lilith smiled.

"What did she do to you?"

You were silent.

"Y/n I'm talking to you." Evelyn sounded angry.

Lilith gave you a dangerous look.

Evelyn was right.

Lilith was dangerous.

"We're going out now and you tell me exactly what happened.", Evelyn explained.

"Aren't you ashamed at all? You scared the poor child." Evelyn took your sweaty hand and led you to the exit.

"Y/n!" you heard Lilith yell angrily, causing your legs to walk even faster.

"What the hell happened?"

"Nothing..." you whispered.

"You better talk to me. You know this place is dangerous so speak up.

The more we know, the better!" Evelyn didn't let go of your hand.

"Who exactly are you?" you asked softly.

"And what are you doing here?"

Your eyes glazed over.

"Okay listen..." she spoke.

You sobbed.

"I don't want to force you to do anything. I trust you Y/n," she said quietly, always looking around to make sure no one heard you.

"Please tell me what's going on.

I can't pull myself together anymore. Ms. Ritter had a damn gun in her bag. What exactly are the people doing in there?

Why didn't I notice right away that something was wrong?

I should have noticed something when I got those letters..." Evelyn smiled at you while you spoke.

"That's good. That's very good that you told me this, Y/n.

Now take a deep breath."
