《INVITE ME ROUND》Chapter 32

"What is it?" Evelyn smiled smugly without letting go of your hand.

"I'm serious. Where are you going?" Lilith crossed her arms.

"It's none of your business," she replied.

"It is my business because I am-" Lilith stopped.

"Right. Y/n do you have something to say to Ms. Ritter?" Holding Evelyn's hand, you felt confident for the first time in front of Lilith.

Lilith looked at you in an expectant way, but you remained silent even if you didn't want to.

Evelyn smiled politely but reservedly and stroked your cheek.

While you were still surprised that she did it in front of her, Evelyn already turned her back on Lilith and you followed her.

Finally she let you go.

Even if Evelyn went far, you stayed behind. A hand gripped your wrist and you couldn't even say anything. It was Evelyn who eventually turned back.

"Are you not coming?"

"Evelyn," Lilith's voice sounded angrier.

"Lilith, you're taking up my time, either you tell me what's bothering you or you let me and my...companion go."

"You should get your own son under control before you approach others." Lilith was still holding your arm.

Her grip had more pressure than Evelyn's.

"Oh believe me I have my son totally under control." Evelyn replied, ready to leave.

"Is that so? Well, I guess if you had him under control he wouldn't be ramming around behind the bushes making out with girls." Lilith scowled into Evelyn's eyes.

"What?" Evelyn looked pale while Lilith hardly blinked.

Before Lilith could say anything else, Evelyn run out of the building.

"Is he really out there with those girls?" you asked to avoid an awkward silence when she let go of you.

"Want to check?" When Lilith grinned you knew she was lying.

"What are you doing here? I told you to spend your time with something better than this..."

"I have something to tell you." You swallowed and looked into her eyes.

She looked at you differently than she looked at Evelyn. Her eyes looked trusting at that moment.

"What is it?"

"I really want you to listen to me," you continued.

"Go ahead,"

"I don't think the relationship between the two of us will work out," you mumbled.

She was silent for a moment.

"Well you can't really call this a relationship," she clutched her neck and smiled quietly.

Why did her words mean so much to you.

You tried not to show the sudden pain you felt.

"Right, of course not," your fake laugh came at the right time.

"So you're not that bad, you know that? Let's stay friends anyway."

"Friends?" You didn't know that Lilith saw you as a friend.

She nodded.

"Sure," you lifted a corner of your mouth.

"I don't want to have any problems with my students, I'm sure you know that," You nodded hastily.

But kissing students wasn't a problem?

Lilith had never apologized for what she did. She was one of those people who lived for alcohol and partying.

Maybe the teachers had fun with you because you were young.

Maybe that was the reason why Lilith often asked you to come.

Just to have fun.

But she had chosen the wrong person.

"Oh you're leaving?" Harmony was drunk and sounded surprised.

"Yes, I'm done with these people. Also, my companion didn't show up anymore..." You had spent a while waiting for Evelyn before you went looking for her, but she had disappeared in a spur of the moment.

"I don't have to drive you do I?" Mr. Eastwood looked tired.

"No thanks I can go by myself."

After saying goodbye to Harmony again, you left the property whose owner you didn't know.

Did Mr. Eastwood live in this house?

Or was he collaborating with the owner of the house?

Who had lived in this house and-

A car pulled up next to you and you were hoping to see Evelyn.

That's why it was a big surprise to see Lilith in her black lacked car.

"Do you walk to campus?"

You shrugged.

"Yeah it's not far." You covered your face because of the headlights and a moment later Lilith turned them off.

"Need a ride?"

"N-no..."

"That wasn't a question," you blushed and hesitantly walked towards the vehicle.

Having trouble opening the door of the car, Lilith unbuckled herself and helped you. You sat down on the passenger seat, buckling up.

"Thanks," you answered hoarsely.

"Have you been drinking?" Lilith asked.

"No," you looked at her noticing that her mascara was smudged.

"Did you eat?" she continued with the questions.

"I have, what about you?" you asked.

"Don't worry about me." Lilith's hands caught your attention.

The light from the lanterns gave you the opportunity to take a closer look at her hands and fingers.

"Is something wrong with my hands?"

You turned away fumbling with your fingers.

"No. They're just so big...and your fingers are so thin..." you wish you'd stop talking.

"I don't like them", you were grateful that Lilith made the uncomfortable moment more comfortable for you, but you still looked at her in fascination, which didn't draw her attention to you.

"Lilith?"

"Hmm?"

"Do you know Evelyn's son?" You looked out the window.

"Why?"

"Well because you said she should get her son under control. Do you know that he is ill?" You covered your mouth with your fingers. Maybe it would be better not to tell Lilith about it.

Lilith snorted.

"Of course she put it that way..."

"What do you mean? You know him, don't you?"

"He was my patient. I can't tell you more. You know, privacy and all that shit," she said.

You admired her.

"Are you a doctor?" you curiously put your hand on her arm, noticing how she looked down at it.

She exhaled.

"You don't have to tell me. I'm sorry I'm just-" you withdrew your hand.

"I was a psychiatrist," she answered shortly.

You were so impressed that you couldn't answer.

"Why did you quit?" She didn't answer.

"So Evelyn's son is mentally ill?

Then why does he come to party events?" You got Lilith's entire attention.

She looked deep into your eyes and your nervousness reappeared.

She looked thankful.

It was like she wanted to kiss you but she didn't.

***

"Thanks again, for the ride," You said when Lilith got out of the car. She nodded thoughtfully.

"You're quiet when it comes to telling something about yourself." she said out of nowhere.

"Oh I guess...there's nothing exciting to tell about me."

"I don't believe that." She crossed her arms, looking at her watch.

"Well you honestly don't ask me things. What do you want to know about me?"

"You have something going on with Evelyn, don't you?" You watched her take off her jacket.

"We are good friends..." you felt the jacket on your back.

"I noticed you're freezing," she explained.

"Thank you," you said being thankful that Lilith had worn a sweatshirt.

You didn't feel the need to go to your room and it was nice being in the parking lot with Lilith.

Even her jacket smelled of her perfume.

"You are good friends? How come?", she confronted you.

"Well she listens to me. She cares about me and she makes me feel special. I think she's a great wife," you admitted.

"I see..."

"What about you? Do you have someone who also makes you feel loved? Someone who cares about you? What about your husband? Isn't he the right person?"

"The right person..." She laughed in shock.

"In my opinion, there is no right person in life. But I'm glad you found someone." She reached into the pocket of the jacket you were wearing and pulled out a lighter and a pack of cigarettes.

"You mean the right person doesn't exist?"

"I mean that you are actually all alone in this world because nobody will ever really be interested in you. They may pretend to care. But people are too self-absorbed." She puffed on her cigarette which found a good place between her long fingers.

"I just think maybe you haven't met your right person yet."

She laughed.

"It's too late for that. I'm old." She gave you a noble look.

"You know that I didn't mean it seriously, you're not old.", these words seemed to have an effect on her because after looking at you for a long time she turned away.

"Take care of yourself." Lilith said after a while.

"I don't think Evelyn is as innocent as she seems,"

"Why?" Your eyes glazed over because of her words and because the moment with Lilith was something emotional and special.

It felt right. And it shouldn't.

"I should go. I have a daughter." She threw the cigarette on the ground and stepped on it.

Was Lilith worried about you?

"Wait..." she winced as you lightly grabbed her arm. She didn't refuse.

"Did you mean the things you said? You told me you feel something when I'm with you...", You looked up at her.

"You should get over me. I don't want you to get your hopes up." She got in the car.

"You can keep the jacket," she said before closing the car door you left open.

As quickly as she came she left.

She must have been really jealous to doubt Evelyn.
