《Her Mate》Chapter Forty-one

I sat at the kitchen table with Kera on the opposite side of me. I could feel her eyes on me as I looked out the window waiting for Dobby to appear again. He'd been making laps around the house sniffing, I swear, every strand of grass and twig on the ground like he was patrolling. Works for me. This area was far larger than there was currently folks to watch it.

I filled her and JoAnn on what happened and I could tell Kera was almost as surprised about me being alive after my confrontation with Frank as she was relieved to hear about Linda. It seemed to win me some brownie points with her as she became more open with me after telling her.

As Kera studied me, I was doing the same with JoAnn who continued to throw me. I turned to her as I heard the refrigerator door open and she pulled out several beers, handing one out to me without even asking Kera. For someone who bitched about being in a prison, she was sure getting comfortable here.

"Drink up while you can but don't get drunk. I wanna head out as soon as Nancy agrees."

This did get a reaction from Kera as I felt her eyes break off me to turn to my sister as if she'd lost her mind.

"Tonight? It's not even the full moon yet and-"

"I don't care!" JoAnn said in a slightly raised voice as she sat the beer on the table with a hard thud. The sound making me jump a little.

While JoAnn had been putting on a good front since I arrived, I was sure she was about to boil over. It seemed I was right.

"Ashley is being hunted while we're waiting here doing nothing and we both know that will happen if they catch her..."

Her face softened just for a moment as she seemed to think on it before hardening back up "nevermind. That's not going to happen. They killed my parents! I thought maybe somehow they would stop there, but after what happened, I know they won't. They wont stop till we're dead, or they are. Once I accepted that, the rest fell into place. I'd much rather they be the ones to die rather than myself. How about you? And you want to know something? I'm actually really liking the idea of getting some payback for putting an image in my head I'll never get out. I'm done being scared. I've been terrified since I was almost killed. It's their fuckin turn."

Kera shot up out of her seat clearly not liking JoAnns tone. Now I was getting worried but JoAnn didn't even blink.

"Ashley isn't going to be happy-"

"Yeah, well guess what? She's already not happy with me anyway in case you didn't notice. At least this way she'll have a chance to get over it. She won't be able to do shit if we're all dead, now will she?"

They stared each other down like two rival boxers at a promotion. Kera was a little taller and thinner but I'd give JoAnn a weight advantage if this was a regular match.

"Both of you need to calm down." I said standing up myself now. I thought I was helping but I was wrong.

"I will not be ordered by a -"

Her head spun towards the window at the sound of Dobby barking. He was about thirty yards away from the house looking up on the hillside. The sun had lowered since I arrived making it harder to see what he was barking at.

"Get your gun ready." Kera said in a soft voice that wasn't much louder than a whisper as she scanned the view outside the window. I glimpsed JoAnn leave us alone as my eyes looked for anything out of the ordinary. It was starting to get darker but there was still good light and there wasn't think tree coverage on the hills either. Even I should be able to spot anything coming on them from here.

"There's nothing out there. Dobby's just barking at your mate or one of the others I guess. He doesn't know them very well." I told her annoyed that he would scare the shit out of me like that. After tapping on the window a few times, I had enough and headed out to get him to shut up.

Dobby had moved up closer to the fence line about another ten yards from the house still barking like crazy. Even without making a sound I knew Kera was right behind which only irritated me more because I knew she didn't like me here. We'll join the club, lady.

"I should've left you at home, you dumb dog. Now shut up before you give me-

I heard Kera growl just before I was yanked practically off my feet. "Inside now!"

Coming down the hill I could just make out two groups of wolves making there way towards us. One had three that I could see while two more was on the next hill moving diagonally towards them.

I grabbed Dobby by the collar trying to get him to move which wasn't working very well. I found myself being pulled closer to the fence than away and when I let go Dobby shot forward and jumped, clearing the five foot fence like it was nothing.

"You stupid dog! They're going to kill you!" I yelled after him

I turned back just as Shawn came jogging up to Kera "There's more at the entrance. We're surrounded."

"I didn't think Jake would try again so soon. What if they got Ashley?"

"That's bullshit and you know it!" JoAnn seethed grabbing the older woman's shoulder and forcing her to look at her. "Jake is a fuckin coward who's trying to impress what few runts that are still followering him. Maybe this time when he runs off they'll know how weak he is."

Get inside, now!" Kera demanded. I stood frozen watching as the continued to get closer and hoping Nancy would hurry up and get here. I tried letting her know once again as I heard JoAnns rifle go off only to get nothing. Where the fuck is she?!

JoAnn fired off a couple more rounds before also demanding that we get inside.

Shawn was through the front door followed by two younger guys right behind him. They didn't look much older than their teens and while they were doing their best to appear brave, I knew they were scared to death.

"I couldn't find Lisa." One mentioned.

Both Kera and Shawn looked at each other with a grim look as if to acknowledge the loss of another. "Take them downstairs."

"But what-"

"Shut up and do I say woman! This isn't the time to argue with me."

I may of not of met him as an alpha but I knew he would've been terrifying. Even now, his voice cut through the air and hit you like a blow to the gut.

"You shut up and listen!" Kera returned, refusing to back down "I'm not leaving you to fight them alone. You two take JoAnn and her sister down to the basement and wait in the Danger room. Don't come out till you're told!" She told the two younger ones.

Everyone turned to her and I could tell JoAnn wasn't especially happy about it.

"I'm not going anywhere." JoAnn yelled back taking aim again. "I may be human but I'm no strangers to hunting" she fired again and one of the wolves was hit as it rolled down the steep decent.

"We need to go upstairs. We can barricade ourselves in and still be in a position to fight. Downstairs we'd be trapped."

"It's not fortified. The windows are just that, JoAnn, windows. If you were thinking they were bulletproof or something fancy, I'm sorry to disappoint you. Now stop arguing and do as you're told." Kera said angered grabbing JoAnn by the arm and dragging her back towards the house.

"Let go of me!" JoAnn demanded trying to fight against the elder. Are we really doing this right now? I grabbed JoAnn's rifle from her

"Just go with her!" I screamed at her before turning to Shawn "Where's Jake?"

"I haven't seen him since Ashley took off after him with the others. Kera and JoAnn insists they haven't gotten her yet, so I didn't think they'd split up to hit us again."

Of course he would. The son of a bitch is too chicken shit to risk taking on Ashley. The night at the gas station proved that. Looking through the scope I was sure none of them were him. He's probably waiting for it to be safe, the coward.

We ran back inside with JoAnn fighting every step of the way. As Shawn and Kera started locking the door I liked JoAnns idea of being upstairs. Hopefully I could make it time to save Dobby.

I had no idea where I was going but found myself in a large bedroom with a window facing south. The huge dust cloud that was formed by Dobby and several other wolves made them easy to find.

Dobby couldn't be taking them all on himself, could he? Suddenly he went down as a tan wolf pinned him. Without thinking I took aim and fired. The wolf fell off of Dobby and rolled down the hill. By the time it hit the bottom was a naked man covered with tattoos who I'd never seen before. I quickly took aim at a black one but missed as it took off. Dobby wasting no time giving chase.

"Here's some more rounds. There's more coming from the road-"

The sound of glass breaking could be heard from downstairs making my heart almost stop. It was followed up by several loud crashes and growls. The realization of the situation finally hitting me. They weren't just hitting the place and running off, they were here to kill us. I could only hope we could hold them off.

We both ran back to the stairs to see several werewolves fighting near the window in the living room. Being in werewolf form also meant I had a hard time telling who to shoot at and who not.

I tried to ask JoAnn but between all the snarling and barking I could just barely hear myself think. The house seemed to amplify the sound making it almost deafening.

I screamed as a tan wolf spotted us, breaking away. Raising the rifle, I fired shooting it about a quarter of the way up the steps. It fell forward, the wolf's snout ramming into the staircase before rolling back down.

Upon seeing its friend fall, a larger one howled brandishing it's claws in rage before trying itself. He was slower being in full werewolf form but still moved blazingly fast as I struggled to get off another shot.

It leaped over it as I pulled the bolt back. JoAnns gun went off beside me as she fired several shots. The noise so close to my ear threatening to make me go deaf.

It roared as the bullets penetrated it's body. Blood splattered on the wall and the rail as it continued its pursuit of us only slightly slowing down.

It pulled its arm back ready to swipe at me when instincts kicked in. I brought up the butt of the rifle striking it hard just under its jaw forcing its teeth to go back into hiding, at least for the moment.

While the blow stopped his teeth from taking a bite out of me, it did nothing for preventing him from crashing into me like a truck. The force sending me crashing into the wall behind me.

It cried out again as i saw something come down hard on top of its head followed by another and another. With help from the blows I finally managed to knock it off of me. As soon as it landed I heard several shots fired as I scooted back up against the wall trying to get away from it.

"He's dead! Crystal, He's dead!" I heard JoAnns voice trying to comfort me. I nodded, letting her know I was alright even if just.

As the adrenaline died down the pain from my injury increased substantially. A large cry caused us to turn towards the stairwell.

I leaned against the wall waiting for the pain to subside. Not giving a shit a removed my shirt as I was bleeding so much that it was sticking to my skin. My shoulders now stinging as well the whole time, but I got it off as another wolf appeared at the top of the stairs running, its mouth wide open. JoAnns back was turned and without the time to warn her I used the pain to swing the rifle pushing her to the side with the barrel and firing just before it got to us. It was practically point blank range into the head. It's blood went everywhere among other... things. I was going to be sick.

"You've got to-"

I tried grabbing JoAnn but it was too late as she ran down the stairs. A wolf had another one pinned that I could only assume was someone she knew.

Kera came out from the kitchen area to help but was immediately attacked by several smaller wolves. One jumping up and biting her on the right shoulder changing her silver and tan fur red. Another grabbed a hold of her leg causing her to lose her balance

"Kera!" Joann screamed raising her Glock.

"They're going to kill you!" I yelled back just as she hit the bottom of the stairs.

Another werewolf appeared behind Kera just a little shorter than her. I rose the rifle yet it looked familiar. loud yelp came from the wolf on Kera's back fell. The tan werewolf seemed almost to nod before swiping its large claws at another and I knew instantly it was Jason. He almost looked pleased with himself but I guess earned it.

Nancy was here? She had to be if Jason was but still wasn't feeling her, why? Another look at the carnage in front of me and those absent and it made sense.

"We need to find Jake!" JoAnn yelled to me

I knew what needed to be done. Fighting through the pain I made my way down the hall as fast as I could and entering a random room that I hoped would have a window I could escape out of unseen. I found myself in a large bedroom thats seen better days. The room was covered with clothes, jerky wrappers, beer and whiskey bottles. The amount with Moose Drool on them letting me know who's bedroom I was in if the mess didn't. A single badly stained mattress laid bare next to the wall. Three dresser drawers were shut out of eight so apparently Ashley was cleaning recently. No time for jokes but I was relieved knowing I didn't have to worry about her and JoAnn getting together. JoAnn hated slobs.

Climbing out the window I could sense eyes on me as soon as I was outside. Steeling myself, I crossed the yard hoping nobody else saw me as the sound of the fighting made it hard to listen for anything else.

Fuck it I said and tossed the rifle. It landed on the grass with the barrel making a noisy clank sound as it hit the sidewalk making me cringe. I wanted Jakes attention, not anyone else's. It worked. Just as I made it to the gate I saw him step out from the side of the neighbors house. He stood there letting me see him. I remember the first time I saw him in full form and how terrified I was knowing he would kill so easily but now... now, I just saw a coward.

I couldn't help but grin just slightly as he started walking across the neighbors lawn towards me. I watched him, not taking me eyes off him. He was normally not much taller than me at about 5'9 but his werewolf form added an easy foot to his height making him look huge. Even so, I wasn't afraid of him anymore.

"I'm afraid I damaged the truck, Jake. Seems your paranoia about me driving any of your vehicles wasn't as stupid as I thought. But it really wasn't my fault! Things kept popping up in front of me. You know how easily I'm startled."

Opening the SUV, I grabbed my cigarettes from the dashboard and lit one up inhaling deeply before exhaling it towards him. I could feel his eyes on me as he got closer. His body was mostly in Silhouette yet I could see him brush his claws against the fur on his legs as if sharpening them.

I wasn't intimidated. Sitting down in the driver's side seat with my feet dangling out I took another long drag blowing the smoke towards him. It sounded like a war zone inside the house from even out here between gunshots and cries which even further pushed me forward. He doesn't care for anyone but himself. Even those of his and Franks packs are just a means to an end. Tools to be used and discarded. I just hoped they could hold them off for a few more minutes.

He let out a small growl that didn't come across as a threat, but more of trying to let me know he was going to enjoy. Not as much as I was, in which the wrongness wasn't lost on me. I didn't give a damn.

"Are you kidding me, Jake?! If you got something to say to me, Jake just shift back and tell me. Are you really that scared of me even with a broken rib? Poor baby."

That seemed to of pissed him off as he raised he let out louder growl now close enough my chest vibrated. My heart racing, I lifted my finger up to him as the smile grew on my face impossible to fight.

To hunt is one thing. But to hunt something that thinks it's the hunter...

well that was just something on a totally different level. They always get this look like...

"There's just one thing..." I rocked my finger back and forth for emphasis " ...do you remember what you were always afraid that might happen when we were together?"

He hesitated. His eyes squinting just a little as his head pulled back just slightly letting me know the question caught him off guard.

"Busted!"

...that. That's the look exactly. He didn't even fully get turned around before Nancy's large wolf form slammed into him from behind knocking him into the door, practically snapping the hinges.

The sound from Jake was like nothing I ever heard before. A loud yelp but lower than normal. He laid on his back swinging wildly as Nancy struck bite after bite so fast it was a blur.

Blood splatter hit me in the eye. After wiping it away Jake was back in human form and looking like he got tossed into a meat grinder. As a beast it was easier to process but seeing him now was different.

Without thinking I jumped out, wrapping my arms around Nancy trying to get her to stop. I might as well have been trying to stop a truck. The growling in between bites letting me know, she had no desire of stopping.

Several wolves were come out of the house drawn to what was happening like moths to a flame. While a few ran off most just circled around us.

Ignoring them I tried again to get Nancy to stop pulling as hard as I could. "That's enough. Killing him won't change anything. Please Nancy -"

I felt someone grab me from behind. Turning fulling ready to hit whoever it was only to see it was JoAnn.

"It will make sure he never hurts anyone again. Maybe you can forgive him for what he's done, but I can't. After what he's done to our parents and now Ashley, let her finish the fucker off!"

I could tell Nancy wasn't happy with me interfering by the way she was half fighting me and her 'Fuck off' attitude I was picking up from her. I guess she still hasn't gotten over earlier. But JoAnn taking this attitude wasn't expected.

I tried yanking away from her but her grip stayed firm. After everything he's done-

"I didn't touch your parents!" Jake said in a broken voice as he tried pulling himself away. I was pleased Nancy was letting him if only to give him hope. He was far too weak to run. Blood covered his entire body and he looked worse than even Linda and Sasha when we found them.

"You gotta believe me! It was someone here-"

"I don't gotta believe anything you say!"

Joann tried getting to him in a fit of rage. Grabbing her around her waist I stopped her just short of kicking range. A part of me still wanted to believe him as impossible as it was to believe. I pushed Joann away from him. To my amazement out of the corner of my eye I saw Jake try to make a run for it in human form only for a brown wolf with fur similar to Nancy's but nowhere near as big and without the gold in it blocked his escape with a terrifying growl. Several others joined in slowly moving towards him and I knew these were of his pack and not Frank's. Those from his must've been those that took off. This could only mean one thing. They know.
