《Her Mate》Chapter thirty-four

After Ashley took off I was glad things had settled down for the most part. JoAnn was deeply bothered by her visit so I ended up spending most of my time trying to calm her down.

After we had the service that consisted of a photo timeline of their lives along with people giving small speeches on what they had meant to them, Pastor Daniels I thought was especially good despite my personal feelings towards him, we all headed to Greenwood Cemetery where our parents were finally laid to rest.

Despite my best efforts JoAnn went off on them for not having both headstones she ordered done. Our fathers was completed and looked beautifully. It was an evergreen granite upright monument that no doubt wasn't cheap so I could understand her being upset.

"Do I have to remind you how much you charged me for them? Where not talking about some ridiculous blouse or insignificant thing here that can wait, we're talking about my mother's headstone. This is completely unacceptable!" Said fuming to the middle aged woman who sat staring blankly behind the thickest black framed glasses I can recall seeing.

"Ms. Reeves, as I have explained to you we don't make them ourselves, that's done by-" A short middle aged women said with short brown hair and dark glasses.

"I don't care! We don't build the houses we sell but we're sure as hell are responsible that they're ready when we tell the client they'll be!"

"They said they'd give you a discount. That's something, right? I know you're upset, and you have every right to be, but these things do happen. I'm sure it wasn't intentional."

"I don't care about a stupid discount, Crystal! I just wanted everything to be perfect and now it's going to be

horrible with just our dads monument and mom with some stupid sign. We use better ones on houses at the realtors. I could just grabbed one from work and saved me thirty-five hundred dollars."

"They didn't have cheaper? C'mon, JoAnn I get you're trying to-"

"Don't you dare start, Crystal! Really, after Ashley and this, I can't take it. I wanted to do it, that should be enough."

I took a deep breath and nodded making a note not to ask her about the caskets. I just hate the fact that she is insisting on doing this all herself instead of letting me help.

"Maybe I should've let Ashley come. I bet they would've had it done then."

She sat down on the curb just outside with me sitting down beside her.

"You don't mean that. You're not going, JoAnn, and that's final."

"I have to or there's no telling what she'll do. She only wants to explain to me what happened, I guess I would too if I was her."

"That's bullshit and you know it! I can't believe you're defending her again especially after what just happened.

"Nothing happened, Crystal! She was a little bossy but that's just how she is. It's not like she threatened to hurt anyone. Even Nancy, she didn't try anything with. All she said was she wanted to spend time with me."

She shrugged looking down at the ground.

"Can we not do this right now?"

Pastor Daniels ended up giving a very warm and touching speech right before they were finally put into the ground. The sun was just passing through the pines when it was over making it seem even more magical. JoAnn wasn't thrilled that the view was mostly of I-90 and not the town me and Nancy convinced her they probably would've preferred this anyways. In there younger days they had enjoyed traveling. I wasn't sure it fully worked but she nodded and seemed content with it.

We finished the day going to In Cahoots. It had been a long and exhausting day and I was glad to see JoAnn started to relax now that everything was done.

There were a few people from the service who came but most of them I was glad to see headed home.

We took our seats in the back corner near a stage that was set up for Karaoke.

JoAnn ordered two margaritas from the waitress when I asked her if one was for me?

"Cat got your tongue? Sorry little sissy but you're going to have to fend for yourself tonight. They are but just the start of many more tonight."

I ordered a Bloody Mary thinking I needed something Spicey. Watching the little brunette behind the bar already made me cringe wishing I could turn her into Linnea at The Wolfs Den or at least make it myself. She was being way to conservative with the Vodka. I rolled my eyes

"Now you know why I just ordered a beer."

Nancy leaned over and whispered in my ear. The warmth of her breath sending electricity throughout my body and causing me to shiver. She chuckled to herself knowing what she did. She enjoyed torturing me like this.

"I trust you can get our drinks for us when they're ready" Nancy said to JoAnn and she pulled me to the floor

Oh-no! My mind screamed but Nancy wouldn't let go and she seemed to of regained her strength as I wasn't able to break free.

"Oh-yes, Babe! This guys actually doing a really good version of Great Balls of Fire. It would be insulting not to dance to it"

She was right, It was a great version and after a few minutes I was relaxed as I let her lead as She swung and dipped me time and again.

After several songs we made it back to JoAnn and our drinks . We had just sat down when I saw a young guy in tan slacks and a pinstriped shirt approach us with the most awful looking smile.

"Dan? Wh-what are you doing here?" JoAnn asked wide eyed. I felt Nancy's hand squeezing my thigh. The look on her face said she clearly didn't approve but felt it wasn't her place to say.

"It's not my place to tell her who she can and can't see. Maybe this will help her. She never gives guys a chance..." I whispered to her. "...What I'm really thinking is another margarita, or two, maybe three. You might be taking care of me tonight."

"In that case, maybe I should get the rope ready now." She said jokingly but focused on JoAnns and Dans conversation. I wasn't sure why she cared but whatever.

"I'm sure you can ask-"

I pulled away from her closer to JoAnn noticing the guy was still here.

"...did you wanna join us?"

I lifted my head upon hearing an invitation from my sister. Talking to him was one thing. I get the whole being polite since they work together but this...

"Do you have any idea what I'd do if I caught you having dinner with someone who could be even slightly interested in you? I let the last guy live only because he'd just sat down. Otherwise..."

I heard Nancy's voice in my head instantly being reminded of that guy who came on to me. My heart jumped up into my throat as I looked out the window to nothing unusual. Like I'd actually see them I thought.

"You know that would be great but, you know... I'd really like to just have supper with just you and Nancy if that's okay - no offense, Dan! It's just it's been a long day surrounded by lots of people and right now I'd like some time to just unwind."

I said standing and grabbing JoAnns hand scooting past Nancy.

"Come have a smoke with me."

"I don't smoke!" JoAnn protested

"Well I do so don't argue . And don't you dare put your ass or your crotch in Nancy's face!"

"Seriously? That's sorta impossible with you dragging me past her like this, what am I supposed to do?" She said glaring at me as she gave Nancy the crotch.

Nancy was trying really hard not to laugh which I didn't find remotely amusing as she scooted as far back as she could in her booth as Joann tried scooting past her. Okay, maybe we should've went out the other way but I needed the leverage to get JoAnn to move.

"What the hell do you think you're doing inviting him? You don't wanna know what I went with Nancy and with Ashley on her little power trip, you're really asking for trouble." I tried getting through to her but already knew it was pointless.

"I don't give a damn what Ashley will think. She isn't my boss and neither are you! I said I'd come see her next week but I never said who I'll see or not see till then." She turned and stormed back into the restaurant.

Personally, I would of preferred the transphobic remarks over JoAnn right now. She wasn't holding back in the drinks, which would've been fine, except the more she drank the more she kept rubbing up on Dan who probably thought he won the lottery. After a couple hours or so she was completely wasted.

The guy was a complete sleeze but I really didn't think he deserved the death sentence that I was sure he was going to get. There's been enough violence and there was no shortage of it from Ashley.

I listened to some of the other conversations at the tables next to us hoping to figure something out. Unfortunately, my brain seemed to be working in slow motion too.

"I know... le-lets go-go t-to... what's your bar called, Ancy?" JoAnn managed to get out between hiccups.

"The Wolf's Den."

"Yeah... let's go there. I-I wanna see y-you make me a dr-drink. These are weak. You won't make mine weak, will you, Lukey? If you do, I'll tell Nancy to fire you.

"Not much chance of That happening, Jo. She's kinda grown on me since she started." Nancy said more to herself as she took a large drink of her beer without even looking at her.

"Would you shut your damn mouth! I said grabbing her by the shoulder. She tried pulling away but that only got her closer to Dan.

"Oh geez, nobody cares! It's 2019 for fuck sakes! We don't have homo- hiccup -phobics, we have werewolves who think they can just do whatever the fuck they want. Well I've got news for her...I choose you!"

She leaned over almost falling into his lap but instead only knocked her class over and all over him.

I would have laughed if i wasn't fuming. I was just glad it was loud enough in here nobody seemed to notice. Dan...maybe. I wasn't sure.

Nancy started rubbing my back trying to calm me down but I wasn't ready to. She needs to learn to knock that shit off. If the wrong people heard it...

"I need to use the restroom." I told her heading off.

I'll come with you."

"I don't need you to escort me!"

"I never said you did. What, I'm not allowed to have to go? Plus I've always wanted to make out in a dirty bathroom stall."

I turned slapping her arm trying to be upset while holding back my laughter. I just couldn't believe her sometimes.

"How did I know you were really just being a pervert?"

"Neverrrr!" She said behind me swatting my ass and making me scream. Damn her, that efin' hurt!"

The bathroom was smaller than the Wolf's Den with only four stalls but at least two were open now that I also had to give me ass some TLC. No doubt I'm going to have a bruise the size of her hand tomorrow.

A young girl with short cropped hair eyeballed is but I paid no attention figuring she was probably just catching on that me and Nancy are together. This area was a little slow to pick up on such things.

I was just finishing up my business when I heard someone talking to Nancy.

"So you two are like... together? Even though you he's a man? I'm not sure how that works but you can at least tell him to use the right bathroom."

"Well bitch, that's a secret but for you I'll make an exception. You see it was magic fairy dust she caught from my soon-to-be ex-husband. You can just imagine my surprise finding about him. I mean the affair was one thing but the others? Whoa, Talk about awkward! But hey, it did make it easier to tell him I was dumping him for his girlfriend. Really, it was the best thing he's ever done."

Nancy chimed in without missing a beat. I just wanted to shrivel up and disappear. She had been drinking nonstop since we arrived too but knowing she had a really high tolerance, I didn't think much about it. Now as she wrapped her arm around my waist and pulled next to her as she finished her glass, I wasn't so sure. She's not normally been this affectionate and especially where we were. This was Langhurst, not Lakeside. I didn't trust there either but this I was fairly certain wasn't the best idea.

"You mean boyfriend, right? The other girl just said his name was, Luke. Why not just say that?

Enraged I came out knocking into a blonde haired gal coming out of the stall next to mine.

"Look lady, im not interested in your homophobic-"

"Homophobic? I think you need to be more careful about who you accuse. I'm Kathy Morrison and this is my wife, Lisa. I've known who I was since as far back as I can remember. I have fought, rallied, and pushed for the 'Add the words' in this state as well as advocated for gay and lesbians in Washington and Montana. I'm not homophobic. I'm deeply outraged that you could justify damaging the great work we've done just so you can invade women's spaces and now... you're in a heterosexual relationship further showing off your confusion. Do you have any idea how that makes us look?"

"I really don't care how that makes you look!" I snapped. It's bad enough from straight people but hearing it from members of your own community was something else.

"You know what? I'm done!"

"We don't have to-" Nancy chimed in trying to be supportive. I appreciated the effort but it wasn't what I needed right now.

"Yes we do! I've had a shitty day between JoAnn, Tom, Jason-"

"Jason? When? Where?" She was trying to remain calm but I could tell she didn't like the idea I had been talking with him.

"He just wanted his job back. I said he could and don't argue. Linnea is going nuts about leaving and you're short anyway not being there.

"Stay out of the women's room next time."

Before I could tighten my grip Nancy let out a growl breaking my grip and had Kathy pinned against the stall. The little blonde bimbo of a wife was trying to break Nancy's grip to know prevail. Great! Now we're going to get arrested. What a way to end this miserable night.

"Say something else! Go on, I dare you!"

Nancy ripped the fabric and the bandage away from her neck revealing the bite mark that now resembled something from an Aliens movie. It was still Swollen and discolored around the whole area. Dried blood acting like glue holding skin together was a sight to see. Both girls turned away in disgust from the sight. I was fairly used to it but even I had trouble looking at it.

"Nobody ever gave a shit if I lived or died yet she spent days patching me up and caring for me. If you think I'm just going to stand here while you insult and belittle her you're -"

"Nancy, let her go! It's not worth it.

I couldn't believe Nancy was so upset. This wasn't new especially with a sister who can't keep her mouth shut.

Finally she let go leaving the girl bent over gasping for air. I might of normally felt sorry for her but fuck her! At least Nancy didn't use her claws like she had on me.

"We're going, grab your shit and let's go!" I told JoAnn when we returned. She barely lifted her head from her makeout session with Dan

She just waved me off with her head buried in Dan's neck. "Don't worry about her. I'll take good care of her." The way he said that made me cringe. JoAnn was far too drunk to be consenting to anything especially after she previously said she wasn't that interested.

Nancy yanked her up only to have JoAnn pull away and into the table knocking several glasses over.

"Leave me the fuck alone!" JoAnn screamed getting the attention of the bar. Fine! If this is how she wants to play it...

"Let's Go Nancy!"

I grabbed Nancy's hand and led her outside where she finally pulled away from me. "We can't just leave her with that guy. I'll take care of him and get her ass out her one way or the other.

"No, after what happened with what's-her-name we don't need anymore attention. I was mostly forgotten about but now..." I let out a long sigh as I dragged her across the parking lot

"What about the car?"

"Leave it! I wanna walk and I don't trust either of us to drive."

"And what about JoAnn, are we just leaving her? That guy could do basically anything he wants with her and fifty people can testify she was consenting. She isn't going to stand a chance - who are you calling?"

I pulled my phone out and saw it was 12:23 in the morning. I should text her but who knows when she'd see it. On the other hand, I wasn't sure she'd answer but decided maybe she'd answer if I annoyed her enough.

"What do you want, Crystal?"

"I'm at the Longshot with JoAnn. She's really drunk and been making out with this guy from work-

"I'll take care of it."

Was all she said before hanging up. I put my phone away and wrapped my arm around Nancy's waist and leaned my head on her shoulder.

I'll let Ashley deal with the police.
