《Her Mate》Chapter Six

I never went to sleep that night. Instead I spend most of the night drinking the beer I bought and trying to process what the fuck happened and more importantly, why didn't it kill me? If it was a werewolf isn't that what they did or at least bite you so you turn into one? Yet there was no bite or any claw marks anywhere. Just the large bruise where it tackled me. It must have used great care not to do anything else, but why?
I had just opened my fifth Moose Drool when Dobby's ears popped up letting me know something was going on. Sure enough he soon jumped off the bed and started barking at the front door.
I was too scared to even look outside. The clock on the wall read 3:23 in the morning. Was it that thing coming back after deciding to kill me after all? A moment later a loud knock came from the front door. A young male's voice called from the other side "Ms. Crystal Reeves? I need you to answer your door ma'am."
I tossed on a fresh T-shirt and crept out in the hall as another large knock followed. This time it was a female voice "Ms. Reeves, we really need to speak with you. Please open the door."
"Who are you and what do you want?" I called from the hallway not sure what I should do. At least they weren't the thing that attacked me earlier. Maybe it is. It brought a friend. Don't say that, Crystal!
"We're here about your incident earlier. For your safety we really need you to speak with us." The male voice answered.
How the hell did they know what happened? I hadn't told anyone and I was sure nobody would believe me if I did. Hell, I wasn't completely sure I believed me. They did say it was for my safety. Did that mean it was coming back? Had it attacked others?
"Hold on." I called out as I grabbed Dobby's leash and stuck it on him as he fought to get to the door. Taking a deep breath I unlocked the bolt.
A young man with wavy blonde hair and blue eyes smiled up at me. He wore a dark suit with a purple tie. The woman he was with stood about an inch taller at about an even six foot. She had dark skin and her hair was done in dreadlocks with a black skirt and a dark red blouse. They both flashed badges at me that I didn't recognize along with their smiles.

"Ms. Crystal Reeves, I'm Mark Kenny and this is my partner Monique Jackson and we're with The Council. We understand you witnessed something unusual last night? The gentlemen said pushing past me and completely ignoring Dobby who was going nuts barking And growling at them.
"Something tried to kill me! I guess you could say I witnessed something. I've never heard of the Council before. Are you with the police?" Something seemed odd about these two that was causing me to lose my very strong buzz I worked up.
"Ms. Reeves, why don't you put your dog outside. You won't be needing him I assure you." The dark skinned Monique said softly as she turned my head towards her. The next thing I remember was coming back inside having put Dobby on his chain. Why would I of done that?
"Please. Have a seat Ms. Reeves and we can get to business." The blonde man motioned to the chair next to the couch they both sat at. I did as I was told not sure I wanted to upset them. They both seemed polite enough but I had no doubt they could drop that at anytime.
"I'm sure you're confused about all this so I'll just be blunt. The Werewolf that showed itself to you last night has claimed you. What this means for you is-"
W-wait. Did you say a werewolf? As in those things in movies? They're real?"
I couldn't believe what I had heard. I had suspected, okay I knew, but to hear it said out loud was something else... wait! What was that part about be claimed? For what?
"It's simple, sweetie, the werewolf has claimed you as their own. The lady smiled at me as her fangs came out causing me to scoot back into the chair in terror. She's a vampire? I just let a freaking vampire in my home?!
She seemed to find humor in my fear "Relax, little human... unfortunately, It is not me who claimed you." She gave me a dark smile before pulling out some folders from her bag.
"What does that mean?" I asked causing her attention to return to me. "Um... the part about being claimed."
"It's simple. This werewolf has not only claimed you but has notified us that you are their mate. This basically means no other can turn you, feed off you, harm or kill you during the provisional time. If after three months the werewolf has not given you their mark the claim will expire and you will be free to be claimed by another."

"Or to be killed?" I added trying to process this. They both nodded.
"This on top is your Black Card. As long as you do not speak of the incident or anything supernatural you are now or later become aware of, your life will continue on as nothing happened. Failure to do so will revoke the agreement and you along with any potential humans will be dealt with." She handed me several stacks of paper with a black looking credit card on top. It said The council on top with my picture on the bottom corner. It normally takes weeks to get these things. "Keep that card with you at all times it basically tells every other that you've been claimed and to leave you alone." The vampire sat the papers in front of me.
"I did tell you this was about your safety." Agent Mark or whatever I was to call them spoke up.
I kept looking back and forth between them trying to make sense of this but it wasn't working.
"So this will stop that werewolf from returning, right? Do i Just wave this card around like some celebrity at a famous mall? And what about others do they introduce themselves before trying to eat me or something?"
Monique leaned forward cupping her hands together in her lap and the pupils of her eyes disappeared as they turned black.
"This is not something to joke about little human so I suggest you take this seriously. Aside from seeing vampires usually only at night their eyes go black when angered. Werewolves eyes usually can glow any number of colors but yellow and green is them most common...
My mind wandered off realizing Jake's eyes would do that from time to time. Was this Jake? Why would he do this?"
"Ms. Reeves?" The male asked annoyed but his face seemed to relax noticing the shocked that must of been on mine.
"Jake! Jake Randall! He's well..." I took a deep breath deciding if I should say anything but really was him cheating on his wife with me the shocking thing here between vampires, werewolves and me being claimed? I didn't think so.
"He's sorta my boyfriend. The thing is, he's married, but we've been together so... did he do this? His eyes have glowed but I always figured it was my imagination but-"
The woman raised her hand "we're not here to reveal who claimed you but I will tell you that, yes, Jake is a werewolf. But no, he wasn't the one who has claimed you. You will have to end things with him or you both will face severe consequences. I would also recommend you don't get involved with anyone else married or otherwise unless it's to the one who has claimed you."
They gathered up their things and got up to leave. "Wait!" I jumped up off the loveseat "What about the one that tried to kill me?"
They both looked at each other before returning their gaze to me. "If they wanted to kill you Ms. Reeves, you would be dead. However, if you're asking what we plan to do about that the answer is nothing. They have done nothing wrong according to council laws. Now if you'll excuse us it's almost my partners bedtime so we really must be going. You will find our numbers in the paperwork I left for you if you should have questions but aside from that we will leave you be unless you break the rules. Don't do that."
"I watched as they both got into a black Jeep and drove off. It was only then Dobby finally settled down and I felt so bad for ignoring him like that. Did that vampire girl do something to me?
I stopped letting the fact that I just mentioned someone being a vampire as in real and not some movie. Holy shit! Vampires and werewolves are fucking real!
I rushed back into the house and grabbed a Miller that i had originally bought for Jake but figured he wouldn't be drinking them now anyways. To my surprise I really wasn't that torn up about it. In fact I was actually a bit excited. I always dreamed of finding my one true love and being with them forever. God I was hooked on Disney love stories as a kid! A Mate was that and more right? I paced around the kitchen before taking a large drink of the beer. Trying to think of every werewolf story I heard involving a mate. Don't they just know? I thought. It seems they knew but not me. I didn't have a clue. But maybe... there was one in the stack of papers they left. I raced back over to the couch grabbing up the paperwork, determined to find out who my mate was.
