《Regret The Rejection |✔️》01| The calm before the storm✔️

The first rays of the sun streamed through the curtains, giving our room the coziest feel to it. The window panes were open and I could hear the gentle twittering of the birds in my sleepy state. Blinking my eyes, I turned over to my side so that I could face my sister whose elephantine snores were likely to rouse the whole pack house.

"Wake up, lazy bones!" I chimed in a singsong voice, leaning close to her ear. "The sun is up! It's a lovely morning!"

But that had no effect on her. "What do you want me to do? Photosynthesise?" She mumbled in her sleep, drooling even more. "Go piss off Aden."

"I'm going to say this just once. If you don't wake up now, we'll be late for school."

"You said it. Now go get lost."

I frowned. "Aren't you supposed to be genetically programmed to love me? I'm your twin but you're always so rude."

"Mutation." She muttered groggily, "Seriously Ki, why don't you pester someone else for a change?"

"Maybe because tormenting you is my hobby." I retorted, glaring at her sleeping form.

"More like your obsession." She corrected, her voice still thick with sleep. "You need to be hospitalized for that."

"I hate you." I grumbled, unable to come up with anything smartass. "I really really hate you."

"The feeling's mutual, DinoBoo. Now shoo."

I sighed and looked at the ceiling in exasperation.

Then slowly, a devious grin crept on to my face and I tiptoed into the bathroom as silently as I could.

I knew the exact way to put a stop to this, and give me feeling of victory. Though I doubt it would be mutual. But does it look like I care?

Of course not.

Precisely two minutes and six seconds later, the members of the Dark Wolf Pack heard a crash that had them springing out of their beds in horror and concern.

No doubt, I was bound to receive a sound telling off for the stunt I just pulled, but I had plenty of time to fret over that later. The look on my victim's face made every form of punishment worth it.

Wet. Pissed off. And annoyed as hell.

Oh, this is gold.

"Kiara, I am so going kill you now!" Ariana, my twin, screeched as ran after me soaking wet with a broom in her hand.

It was nearly school time and I had used the surest way of waking her up - drenching her with a bucket of cold water. Needless to say she had woken up with a string of profanities flowing from her mouth.

I laughed loudly while I ran to take shelter behind Mom.

"You can't catch me ever, PandaBoo!" I cackled hiding behind our mother. I knew calling her that would only irritate her further.

"I swear I won't spare you for this. Wait till I get my hands on you, DinoBoo!" she yelled back waving the broom at me.

"As if you could ever catch me!" I shot back.

"I wouldn't be so confident if I were you!"

I opened my mouth to retort when Mom chose the moment to cut us off.

"That's enough. You're grown up girls, so start acting like it. Go get dressed for breakfast." She ordered us not looking up from her kitchen work. She wasn't the least surprised at the way the day began. When nurturing two wildcats like us everything was to be expected.

Arie scowled and stalked back with the broom still in her hand. "You look like a shrivelled up witch, by the way." I teased knowing fully well it would rile her up all the more.

"You look like a hippo in the mud." she retorted, giving my muddy clothes a once-over. She had chased me across the garden and the forest trail.

"Thanks, I find hippos cute."

She blinked, then burst out laughing. "Gods—you—you're impossible!"

Internally relieved she had given up the plan of revenge, I grinned and punched her shoulder lightly. "The word you're looking for is 'incorrigible'."

"Keep talking. You're proving me right."

I pulled her to our room. "Let's get dressed before Mom comes up to holler at us. We'll debate on that during class."

Twenty minutes later, we're as prim and proper as dolls. It's a miracle how we share the same room, fight over the stupidest stuff, pull each other's hair out and make each other's lives miserable on a daily basis but still get ready on time.

The Alpha and Luna were already seated when we entered. Aden was munching on a sandwich. Stella, his younger sister was gulping down her coffee while the rest of the pack were digging into their breakfast.

We sat opposite Mom and Dad after wishing the elders good morning. Aden grinned at Arie and passed me a small shy smile. I didn't miss the way heat spread across his cheeks when I shot him a bright smile in return.

Dad was the Beta of the Dark Wolf Pack while Aden's dad was the Alpha. Aden and Arie were the best buddies at school. However he hardly ever spoke to me which was surprising. I had taken up the initiative a few times but got tired of it since he stuck to nothing more than two syllables a minute.

The kids of the Dark Wolf Pack and the Blood Hound pack went to the same school. Our school Wolverine High was a school for only werewolves.

Wolverines High School wasn't one of the best schools in our state, but it was pretty good, nevertheless. It had three separate buildings and the walls were covered with ivy.

It was ancient, built in the 1930's back when, our grandparents were in school. Our parents grew up studying in the same school. We still didn't have the latest facilities but we were used to the old chalkboards and rickety benches. Sometimes when I saw the cupid hearts carved underneath the desks, I wondered if some of them were my parents' doing.

We had been going there since we were toddlers and though we hated studies with passion, we went to school daily for the sake of meeting our friends. After all, one can go through anything for the sake of friendship, right?

After breakfast Dad drove us to school. Aden was in the same class with us though he was older than us by a year.

I sat in the front seat while Aden and Arie sat behind. The door hadn't even been shut properly, when Arie once again began her non stop chatter.

"What do you think of yesterday's movie, Aden? Don't you think John's idea of a beach - proposal was absolutely brilliant?" She squealed, clapping her hands in glee.

I resist the urge to yawn at her childish enthusiasm. The torture session had officially begun.

"Hmm.."

"And then he kissed her hand and slipped the ring on her finger! Oh God! I nearly swooned then!" she continued, oblivious to his lack of interest.

"Hmm..."

"And did you see the part where he linked his hands with her and they stood gazing at the sunset? And then Marie asked what they would name their first child, and did you know what he said?"

"Hmm.."

"Charlie Chaplin?" I butted in bored. My sister had absolutely no idea that the poor boy wasn't interested in the sappy movie at all.

She snorted. "You can name your baby that. But thankfully, John had more sense than you." Then turning to Aden she began to eat his head again, "So do you know what he said?"

"Kiara."

I turned my head to face him, "What?"

"No.. er.. I wasn't talking to you." He stuttered, turning a light shade of red.

I stared at him confused. "You did call my name, a second ago, didn't you?"

"No, silly!" Arie told me, "That's the name John said."

I rolled my eyes at her and looked at Aden who now bore an uncanny resemblance to a tomato. "You actually watched the movie?" I asked him incredulously.

Since when did Aden become a romcom movie watcher? Undoubtedly, one of the side effects of hanging out with my Ariana.

Ariana just 'hmphed' at that. "The only reason he heard that is because-"

"-I woke up to get a tub of popcorn." Aden concluded with a glare at my sister. An indecipherable look passed between them and I just watched like an oblivious intruder.

I raised my eyebrow at his response. That somehow seemed hard to digest.

"Right!" She said sarcastically, after giving him back a glare twice as hard. "A popcorn tub. Really creative, Aden!"

"Shut up. Why don't you?"

"Just tell her already and then may be I will!"

He turned redder than ever. "I'll tell when I'm ready."

"And will happen the day pigs fly and aliens invade the earth." She scoffed, shooting him an exasperated look.

I shook my head, smiling at the two bickering in the back seat.

They did this daily and I had to admit, though they annoyed the hell out of me with their arguments, it was fun to watch them.

Today however, I wasn't very interested in knowing about some sappy movie they had watched yesterday.

So, I fiddled with the radio until I found a station and tuned out the rest of their bickering by humming "When the night changes," to myself.

The argument however, never stopped. It went on and on until Dad was forced to tell them to shut up.

Well, that's life at the Dark Wolf Pack for you.

Getting out of the car my eyes immediately searched for Ashton, my best friend. We have been best buddies practically since our diaper days.

Suddenly, I felt myself being lifted from the ground and rattled all over. I knew who it was without turning around. This had to be my idiotic Ash! After all, who else could it be?

"Ashton, put me down you furry mutt," I shrieked as I heard his laugh. Like Aden, he too was a year older than us too and needless to say very, very strong for a normal fifteen year old.

"Ah, swear words at the break of dawn. You just made my day!" He made a dramatic show of bowing down before me and tipped off his imaginary hat. "Top of the morning to you, milady!"

I mocked him with a courtesy of my own, then grinned at his face.

"It's getting old." I said. "Get something new. I feel like yawning."

"Yawn loud then. I hope a bunch of flies enter when you do."

"If you're trying to be snarky, at least come up with something original." I elbowed him in the ribs and he yelped. Slipping my hand in his, I waved Dad and Ariana goodbye. "Bye, Boo. See you at lunch!"

She narrowed her eyes at me, "Don't call me that in public!"

Right. She had a reputation to maintain.

I turned to Aden, only to find him looking stiff and angry. I followed his gaze and it met Ashton. Ashton had a weird I-dare-you-to look on his face as he glared back.

Oh God, not this again.

I tugged at his arm, pulling him away. "Come on, all this excessive testerone is choking me."

As much as I enjoyed watching fights, watching two people you are close to, isn't as enjoyable.

Not now, I thought to myself. Not when we are running late. They could start their fight some other time. Mrs. Reynolds wouldn't be too pleased to see both of us late and Ash sporting a black eye.

I vaguely wondered what was wrong between the Ash and Aden now. It wasn't new. On the contrary, their first fight had begun when they were still in their cradles.

Being the sons of the Alphas of two well-known packs just inflated their ego to the size of China. The cafeteria frequently staged the clash of egos between the two. Of course the fact that their fathers were allies made no difference to them.

"Hang on. Do you have the notes of Maikoh era?" Ashton's voice startled me. I turned around to find him a few feet away behind, his face slightly red as he shuffled through the numerous spiral-bound books his bag. "I seem to have lost mine."

I frowned, unable to recall much of it. "Wasn't that taught to us yesterday in Ancient History?"

"Yes. That one."

I had fallen asleep barely ten minutes into the lecture.... something about the first wolves of America that hadn't interested me in the slightest. But I wasn't about to say that and be reprimanded as always.

"I think I left mine at home. Maybe, you left yours there too?" Plausible. Ancient History wasn't, after all, part of today's timetable.

Ashton shook his head. "Can't be. I swear I put it back in this morning." A scowl had climbed up his usually cheery face as he tugged at the chains of his bag in frustration.

I was beginning to grow tired. We were already late for class. Even if I didn't have the notes, Ariana was sure to have them. I could always borrow hers when the need arose. If sisters weren't made for this, what else were they there for?

"Tell you what," I promised Ashton, "If you can't find it by tonight, I'll bring you mine tomorrow. Let's just get to class now, shall we?"

Mrs Reynolds had already begun the class when we entered. After the usual dose on importance of punctuality we entered and made our way to the window seat. Ashton sat next to me and we both prepared ourselves to die out of boredom.

The next few classes seemed to drag on for ages. I tapped my foot on the floor impatiently waiting for the recess bell to ring. What were the waiting for? Would they ring the bell only after they succeeded in killing us with their crappy mundane teaching?

I let out a sigh of relief the minute we finished Physics. Ashton looked at me and chuckled.

"What?" I snapped at him. Physics frequently brought out the wild part in me.

Honestly, each time I opened my book, I felt like throttling Newton and his cronies...

"Looks like you actually survived the Physics Attack. Did you even listen to a word Mr Johnson said?"

"Of course. Those vectors problems were the easiest ones I have seen." I lied blatantly. Truthfully, I hadn't paid attention to a single vowel he uttered today.

"Ki, we finished vectors last week." Ashton spoke while he struggled to keep a straight face.

I blushed with embarrassment while Nicole, Brenda and Arie tittered with laughter. Even Aden who sat with us once in a blue moon, let out a chuckle. Despite the fights, they were compelled to sit together being the best buddies of two inseparable sisters.

"So? The sound waves reached my ears a week late, big deal." I huffed looking away in order to hide my embarrassment.

Ashton shook his head in defeat. "You are impossible."

"Tell me something I don't know."

He snorts in reply, digging into his lunch.

"We had a surprise test in biology today." Across the table, Ariana was telling Aden about her class.

"How did it go?" Aden asked.

"I was really surprised."

The rest of the break was wasted with Nicole and Brenda lecturing us about an upcoming party.

Somehow, those girls always got on my nerves. However, their dads being the Gammas of our pack made it impossible for me to avoid them.

I hadn't been listening to half the chatter when Nicole turned to Ashton in a voice she thought was flirty - which to me sounded like a tomcat with a sore throat, "You will join us won't you Ash? The party always seems so boring without Aden and you."

Oh, she missed the whole ego drama I guess. The last clash of egos occurred two weeks ago. In a way we loved a weekly dose of it.

"I won't be able to make it. I have other plans in mind."

Aden looked decidedly relieved at that.

"With Kiara, of course." he added, earning a puzzled look from me.

"We do?" I asked him, my eyebrows cocking up instantly. I knew when he was lying.

Aden surprisingly looked a dark shade of purple. I watched him for a moment and turned back to Ashton.

"It's a surprise." he told me.

"What for?"

"Umm....for the upcoming friendship day?"

Boy, wasn't he a terrible liar...

"Ash, that's three weeks from now." I wasn't going to make things any easier for him.

He gave me a silent pleading look but I shook my head indicating I wasn't falling for it.

In fact, I wanted him to come to the party, not because I loved it but because I desperately needed company. I wasn't too friendly with the kids in my pack.

Of course, I had Arie but she was more of a party girl than me. With Ashton I was my own self. As of late, people had started pairing Ash and me together which upset me a bit in the beginning but then I just decided to ignore the teasing.

He and I both knew we were waiting for our true mates.

(Kiara and Ariana as pups)
