《Guts (the original interactive zombie apocalypse survival story)》9 - Ignore Them

At a time like this, you realize that you can't trust anyone. You suck in a sharp deep breath and hold it. Flat against the wall, you're as still as a statue while they bang away.
"They're coming, Wade, come on!" you hear a feminine voice yell. The pounding gets louder, more desperate.
"Come on! Come on, we saw you!" a guy - maybe Wade - yells.
You squint your eyes as though trying to put your entire situation out of sight and out of mind. It doesn't work.
"Wade! Let's go!" The female sounds excessively alarmed.
You hear a loud thump on the door. He expresses his distaste with a few profanities, then there's silence from outside again. You take a chance to peek out the window. Sure enough they've walked away from your door. They're lugging an injured guy around between them, and even from this distance, you can tell he's not in a good shape. Good thing you didn't let them in, he might be sick with whatever kind of virus is causing all of this. You look down the other side of the street, toward what the couple are fleeing from.
Sure enough, the guy who'd crashed and died at the hands of the undead earlier has been reanimated. He's shuffling toward the trio with the other two undead. A naughty little voice in your head says, glad I'm not them, but then you feel kind of bad that you feel that way.
You look the other way, and this is where your heart catches in your throat. Beads of sweat are already forming on your forehead as you take in the sight of an army of undead. They move in various speeds. Some are easily distracted and wander off to look here or there. One turns over a power-riding car that belongs to the little girl down the road. Another knocks over a trashcan. You watch in terror as a group separates and bursts into the house of one of your neighbors. You can hear the screams even with every window and door closed.

How can they find them so easily, you wonder.
With a sick feeling, you realize the undead must be able to smell the living.
Right about now, you're praying, you're crying, you're looking for a place to hide. But there's nowhere. You can't possibly hide from them. So you run. Like a bullet, you shoot from the back door. Immediately you're almost floored by the sheer stink of them. You've literally been engulfed by a giant miasma of death. As you try desperately not to breath in the rancid fumes too much, you can hear the monsters rummaging through the neighborhood. Another neighbor shrieks at the top of her lungs. Lungs that, you wager, will be ripped from her body cavity soon enough.
You run.
Past trees, through bushes, you run.
By houses, over lawn ornaments, you run.
All the while, you hear them, hammering on behind you the way your heart is hammering your chest. Their grimy nails claw the air behind you. Their stagnant breath is on the back of your neck. And then, you trip.

Tim the Engineer
Summoned against his will to a world of swords and magic, an engineering student struggles to find a way home under the shadow of a world devouring threat. ***************************** Updates: 5/13/19: Revisions to several chapters for clarity, grammar, and style. 4/29/19: A short side story and artwork has been added to the blog. 4/8/19: A Side Story has been updated on my new blog (every writer is required to have one). https://talesfromliahar.wordpress.com/ ***************************** “The summoning scenarios are broken down into groups of ten.” Emi Ito stated. “Don’t, don’t you dare say another word.” Muttered Genzo Uchida. His eyes had turned bloodshot and his hands shook with rage. “The first thirty…” “Shut up!” Genzo bellowed “How dare you help these disrespectful gaijin?” Flecks of spit and madness flew from his face, his fist raised ready to strike. But Emi did not flinch, instead she was about ready to continue when Yuma Takeuchi interrupted her. “Uchida, please,” her sweet sounding words could melt ice. “I think we will have a better chance of getting home if we all work together.” When she glanced up with her sleepy looking eyes at Genzo Uchida he deflated visibly. “Were not getting home.” Uchida said coolly. “Group summoning, large, that puts us in the 60 series. No one came to greet us after five minutes of arrival. That leaves scenarios 68 and 69. In scenario 68 there is something that binds the large group together; they are all classmates or a single family. But thanks to the gaijin” he spit out the word “I think we are scenario 69 with no way home.” Ikko Inoue’s eyes went wide, while Katsukno and Hayata started muttering to themselves. Tim took on a serious look and rubbed his scruffy chin. Emi maintained her stoic expression while trying to find something to refute. McKenzie glanced at Randall and giggled. Randall took the prompting of his teammate and followed up by approaching Genzo. “Uh, so we are in a sixty-nine?” “Yes.” Replied Genzo with the seriousness of someone who’s life was about to end. McKenzie covered her mouth and snickered. “You and me, were stuck in a sixty-nine situation?” Randall pushed with a grin. “Yes, we are all stuck in a sixty-nine scenario together!” Genzo retorted in anger. McKenzie fell on her butt laughing. “What the hell is so funny?” Demanded Genzo, whose face had turned red. “It’s a problem with the automatic translation.” Retorted Tim. Randall, who seemed unable to quit started in again “So, about this sixty-ni…” Genzo interrupted Randall with a swift punch to the face. But, because of their height difference it was a bit of an uppercut that left Randall rattled. Tim and Ikko moved to step in between the two, but Genzo showed no further hostility. Instead he just stared at his clenched fist with such intensity it grabbed the attention of the room. “I unlocked a skill.” He said bluntly. ***************************** This is not a light novel, but people who like light novels should enjoy the themes of this book. ***************************** A Map of the Region

8 135The Arcane Fanatic
"A strange thing Drives us all..." An unknown voice echoes out through seemingly darkness. "The will to live." "But what is it to truly live? It is different for everyone but for me it is magic." "To feel the power at my fingertips and see mysteries unfold. To create and manipulate magic in a way that has never been done before. To be a pioneer of magic... that is what I live for. --- In the world known as Arcane, we follow a young gentleman that goes by the name of Max Blacklock. The strange thing about Maxwell is that the soul that is currently inhabiting his body isn't the original! A stranger with no recollection of his memory or thoughts takes place in a near-dead Max and takes to the world like a fish in water. Mysteries lay in the world of arcane in spades and Max will be the one to find them with his thirst for knowledge. But will Max find the mysteries that lay in his mind, body, and soul? This book is just for fun and to practice my writing skills. My previous book met me with frustration after sitting for hours in a day trying to get words to come out. It became something that just wasn't fun to me anymore. So here I'm going to try and just have fun writing a story I would have loved to read. If you want to read what I write then be my guest. I love to critique and hope that I can get better through writing this story but I don't know if I will be able to keep a stable upload schedule until I get into the flow of things again.
