It's been months since the dreadful moment that Rebekah jammed a stake through your heart. You were stuck watching everyone destroy themselves. You just wanted everyone to be okay and you hadn't realized how important you were in their lives.
You were there when they announced to everyone else what had happened to you. It was only Matt, Jeremy, and Tyler. They weren't there. Stefan was the one who explained what happened. Tyler was confused, Matt was hurt, and Jeremy was angry.
Tyler asked Stefan multiple times to repeat what he said, not realizing how agonizing it was for everyone to hear the story over and over, causing Damon to leave. He went outside to cry in peace and take his sadness out on the wall.
When Tyler finally understood, he sat down. His head in his hands as he let it sink in. Matt was in tears. You understood his dislike towards vampires and why he didn't like you when you first showed up. You kept your distance from him and didn't invade his personal space but when you had came to the grill one night, you guys enjoyed each other's company. You had ordered a drink and he could tell something had made you upset, so he stayed and spoke to you. You appreciated the moment more than you could express. You guys got closer from there but when you saved his life, when you didn't have to, he grew to like you.
Jeremy has had his little crushes on you. They came and went but he's always cared about you but Damon, being Damon, wasn't keen on you being friends with Jeremy. You and Jeremy were best friends, ignoring Damons wishes. You wrestled with each other all the time and teased each other. Made jokes that would seem hurtful but you'd always strike back at each other with something as easily insulting.
Klaus had witch after witch to try and bring you back. Nothing worked. They also weren't even sure if you were there or not. He had his hopes but they were quickly fading. He visits your body every night and every morning. He hopes he'll walk in and you'll no longer be gray but you'll be sat there, awake and well. He hates seeing you laying there, lifeless. Your skin gray and cracked. He gives you a kiss goodnight on the forehead before he tries to go to sleep. The same thing in the morning, he'll give you a small kiss on the forehead before spending the day with a witch trying to get you back.
He was an emotional wreck.
You've been watching Damon drink himself away, so close to turning off his emotions but Stefan keeps an eye. Damon, of course, blamed himself. He regrets every argument he ever starred with you. Anytime he got mad at you. Anytime you felt you couldn't speak to him about something. His heart hurt and he talks to you when no one is home, of course he's taking a shot in the dark.
You know it's unhealthy and you wish he'd stop. He'll pace around your room, bourbon in hand, telling you he's sorry and how much he misses you. He looks back on old memories but then he remembers how horribly he's treated you and it rips his heart apart all over again. He always ends up crying and sometimes he even falls asleep in your bed. Stefan will come home and if he can't find him, he knows he's asleep in your bed.
Damon has even imagined seeing you and the look once he realizes it was his own mind playing tricks on him, that's when he gets angry. When, he think Klaus finally succeeded and he can say everything he wanted to and he can hold you again, just to have you fade away and he's back alone in an empty room.

Stefan hid his own pain. He tried his best to carry himself because everyone didn't know what to do with themselves. He hasn't let himself cry since the day you passed. He's silently hurting which isn't new to him. He's more worried about his brother and everyone around him then himself.
It took Caroline forever to admit you were finally gone. It wasn't until a month later that she accepted it. You understood her the most out of everyone and she knows she'll never have someone like you again. She loved you and all she wants to do is talk about how she's feeling but she can't because it's about you and you're not there.
Elijah was similar to Stefan. Not showing his pain. He watched as his brother lost his mind and he tries his best to make sure he doesn't go on rampages or kill innocent witches. He's also only cried once but he tries to block out the feelings more than cover them. He refuses to truly accept them. He keep Klaus under raps as Klaus goes day by day trying to bring you back, never taking a break. He's always looking for witches and going through books and meeting people who could possibly help.
Kol wasn't super close to you but he has spent time with you and the conversations he had with you were something he could look back on and it'd be bittersweet. He never disliked you. You were always kind to him. You've had multiple laughs together. He misses that.
Bonnie and you had your moments. You didn't always get along but you were always respectful and she didn't always agree with your decisions but you always took her opinion into her account which she appreciated. She missed you, of course. She had also been trying to bring you back in some type of way. No one knew about it though. She did it on her own. At first, she wasn't going to but she saw how everyone's been acting and treating themselves.
You were loved by everyone.
You followed Klaus as he went into the room where he kept your body. He sat down in the chair and intertwined his hand with yours. You stood behind the chair and placed your hand on his shoulder. You know he couldn't feel it but it gave you comfort.
"Love, my beautiful darling, I'll never stop trying to bring you back. Even though Elijah tells me I should. You mean the world to me and I wanted to tell you just incase you can hear me. Goodnight, I'll see you soon." With that, Klaus placed a soft kiss to your forehead and left the room.
"Goodnight, Klaus." You whispered as you held back your tears and made your way to the boarding house.
Walking in, Damon wasn't on his spot in the couch so you made your way up to your room. He sat on the edge of the bed, picture in hand and a bottle of bourbon in the other. You sat next to him. The picture was of you and him that you kept on your dresser. It was from a few years ago when you first got to Mystic Falls to see the boys.
He was taking you on a trip, just to spend sometime with his little sister. Along the way, you stopped and tried to get him to take a picture with you but he refused for about 5 minutes but he eventually gave in. He didn't smile for the camera. He instead cocked up an eyebrow and when you nudged him with your elbow, he smiled a looked at you and you caught the moment. It was a smug smile but a smile. He was happy then and so were you.

"Stop doing this to yourself, Damon." You said out loud, knowing he couldn't hear. He laid down on your bed, finishing off the bourbon before falling asleep with the picture on his chest.
As you laid next to him, wishing you could speak to him it felt like you couldn't breath. Your chest hurt. You sat up, a hand against your chest. The pain was sharp and you found yourself gasping for air.
Suddenly, you shot up. It was dark. You were no longer in your bedroom. You felt stiff and as you looked around, you realized where you were. You jumped up and ran out of the room, heading to Klaus' room. You pushed open the door but he wasn't there.
You needed Klaus. You needed to know if this was real and not your imagination or a trick. You needed to feel his touch.
"Who in the bloody hell is running around?" Klaus' voice spoke from downstairs. He can hear you. Tears started forming in your eyes as you began down the stairs. You went where you heard Klaus and just as you entered the kitchen, he was standing up. He turned to face you and he froze as his eyes met yours.
"Please tell me you can see me, Klaus." You were desperate. All you've wanted was to be seen and heard for months.
"Y/N." Was all he said before he closed the gap between you and placed his hands upon your cheeks. His eyes darted back and forth. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.
You couldn't stop the tears when you felt him. Your hands reached up to cover his. He couldn't stop himself from pressing his lips to yours. You both smiled into the kiss. Both of you had waited so long for this moment.
"Klaus, what are you doing?" A voice interrupted. You recognized the voice and turned quickly. Elijah was confused until his eyes met yours. He smiled a small smile and you ran into his arms. He almost fell back but he steadied himself and held you as you cried. He held back his tears of joy and you laughed as you pulled away.
"Y/N, you're- how do you feel?" Elijah asked. His voice was a little uncertain which worried you. You glanced back at Klaus before answering his question.
"I'm great. I'm amazing. I'm alive and here. What's wrong?" Your mind began to fill with questions. What if this was temporary? What if you only had a small time here?
"You're human. Have you not realized yet?" Elijah softly put his hand on your shoulder. You shook your head in disbelief but as you let your mind collect his words, you realized he was right.
You had ran like normal through the halls and you couldn't hear Klaus downstairs from upstairs. You weren't hungry. You were human. You were very alive. More than you anticipated.
"I-I have to go see Damon. If you see Kol, tell him what happened and that I'll see him soon." With that, you left and made sure to grab the first set of keys you saw and made your way to the boarding house.
You pulled into the driving and your heart pounded in your chest. You haven't been able to hear your own heartbeat pounding this hard in your ears for so long. They would never think it was you even though they could hear you. They don't know your human.
You sat in the car and stood at the front door. You were already so overwhelmed with emotions. Reuniting with Klaus and Elijah was so heartwarming. Now, you'll be facing Damon. The one who's been destroying and blaming himself the most.
You pushed open the car door and didn't even bother to shut it as you ran inside the boarding house. No one was there. Damon was probably asleep in your bed. Stefan was either in his room or out. He did that a lot. He would go in random walks through the woods when he was too upset.
You ran upstairs and pushed open your bedroom door. Damon was asleep and still clutching the picture. You smiled and remembered how'd you wake him up.
You stood on top of the bed and began bouncing. He moved with the bed and you began laughing as he woke up. He dropped the picture as he sat up roughly. He hadn't noticed you as he quickly picked up thto picture, making sure the glass was still intact.
Then he angrily glanced at who had woken up but he was confused when he saw you. You stopped jumping and fell to your knees. You were panting and tired. A huge smile was on your face as Damon just stared at you. He didn't look happy.
"Damon? It's me. I'm here." You assured him. He stood up. Still clutching the picture. He huffed and shook his head before he sped out the room.
You wouldn't let him get away easy. You jogged down the stairs to see him sitting on the couch. His back to you. He was drinking a glass of bourbon. You took a few steps until you stood behind him.
"I know you're not real. I'm done falling for your stupid tricks." His voice was cold but broken. It hurt you but he didn't know this was you. He set the picture down and stood up to face you. He had a scowl on his face.
"You're not real! You're NEVER coming back! YOU'RE DEAD!" He yelled and threw his empty glass to the ground, causing you to flinch. Your eyes filled with tears as you looked back at the broken man in front of you.
"Just hold my hand. I can prove I'm real. Believe me. Trust me. I'm here. I'm alive. I'm human. I'm okay and you will be." You walked around the couch to be closer to him. You reached your hand forward and waited. He stared at your hand.
You could watch him fight the decision. He didn't want to be disappointed again. He didn't want the flood of pain that came if you were to disappear. He slowly rose his hand up. His hand hovered next to yours. He breathed out and closed his eyes before locking his hand into yours.
His eyes opened as he stared at your hands intertwined. He quickly met your eyes as his own filled with tears before he pulled you into a bear-crushing hug. You laughed and returned his embrace.
"I've missed you." He whispered. You hugged him tighter in return. Suddenly, all the things you wanted to say had left your mind. You could only focus on him and being able to comfort him like you wanted to all this time. Eventually, you would have to let go though.
"I have so much to say to you." Damon had pulled away from the hug and now had his hands placed on your shoulders. "I just need-," His words were cut off when you shook your head and you gave him a soft smile.
"I heard everything. I was always here. All those nights of you talking to me, I was here. I never left, not completely." You reassured him and it was all he needed. The biggest smile appeared on his face, one you haven't seen in ages. He grabbed you tightly and picked you up off the ground and spun with you in his arms. Laughter filled the air and all felt right again.
You were back. You were home. You were human. Things were going to be a lot different now but you have the most important things back and that's all that matters.
