I sit right by Elena's window in her bedroom, processing what Stefan had told me last night. I could barely believe it. Elena died last night and I didn't even get to say goodbye.
I haven't heard from anyone and I felt so useless at this point. Klaus was gone too. Not only didn't I lose my sister, I also lost my friend and it hurt.
I hear the door open and Damon is carrying Elena's body. "Damon, what the hell?" I ask, wiping the tears away from my cheeks. "What are you doing?"
"Elena, not dead. My blood in her system." he responds and I widen my eyes, my mouth wide open. "She–you're telling me she's in transition?"
He nods, setting my half-dead sister on her bed. "Pretty much." he says and more tears threaten to spill at the edge of my eyes.
Damon gives me a synthetic look before walking over to me. "Hey, hey. This is a good thing, right. Now's she's not dead, well technically."
"No, Damon. This is bad. Elena never wanted to be a vampire. I highly doubt she'll complete her transition." I concede and he rolls his eyes. "She will."
He examines my face for a moment before speaking. "You look awful."
I roll my eyes and push my way past him. "I thought my sister died. How else am I supposed to look?" I ask, throwing my hair up in a pony tail.
§
Later on, Stefan came to meet us and now we're just patiently waiting for Elena to wake up. Not even a second later, my sister gasps for air as wakes up.
Stefan is sitting with her on the end of her bed. She looks around, "Stefan?" she breaths in. He grabs her hand, "Hey. I'm right here. You've been in and out for hours."
"Wh-what happened?"
"You were in an accident." Stefan claims. "Oh my God. Matt is he...?" she gasps. "Alive?" Damon cuts in as we all look at him. "Ask Stefan, the hero," he rolls his eyes.
Elena looks back at Stefan, "He's fine." Stefan assures. "Thank you. I thought that I– how did you...?" Damon cuts her off, "Save you? He didn't."
"When Jeremy brought you to the hospital before all this happened, your injuries were worse than anyone knew. Meredith Fell made a choice, she used Damon's blood to heal you," Stefan explains, "and when Rebekah ran Matt's truck off the road, you had vampire blood in your system, Elena."
Elena starts to panic, "Oh my God. Does– does that mean that I– am I dead?"
"Technically." I sigh. Elena snaps her head towards me, tears forming in her eyes, "No, no, no, no! That wasn't supposed to happen!"
"Maybe it doesn't have to. I talked to Bonnie, she says she's stronger than ever, there might be something that she can do to help you." Stefan responds.
"No, the only thing that's going to help is for you to feed and complete the transition." Damon cuts in.
"We have all day before she has to feed, Damon. That's a day to exhaust every possible way out of this." Stefan tells him.
"There is no way out of it. We all know the drill. You feed or you die. There is no door number three." Damon replies.
Elena starts to cry, "I was ready to die. I was supposed to die. I don't– I don't want to be– I can't be a vampire! If there's something that Bonnie can do we have to try."

"We will. We'll try everything."
Damon scoffs and rolls his eye, "Your choice, Elena. As always." he gets up and leaves. Stefan looks at Elena one last time before getting up. He nods at me before leaving.
Stefan closes the door and Elena looks at me. "Maya, are you okay?" she's asks and I give her a small smile. "No, but I will be and so will you."
She pulls me into a hug and starts to cry on my shoulder. "I thought–I thought I was gonna die and all I could think about was you."
I pull away from the hug, "Elena..."
"I love you and I never ever want to leave you." she tells me and some tears fall from my face. "Stop, you're making me cry. I love you too."
§
Elena takes a bite of a sandwich and chews slowly, making a disgusted face but quickly tries to cover it up. "It's disgusting." Stefan spoke.
"No it's, um..." Elena says with her mouth full. "It's disgusting." Stefan repeats, chuckling. "Yeah, I'm gonna puke." Elena spits out the sandwich into a napkin.
"How can you mess up a sandwich?" I ask, walking to the table and grabbing the other half of the sandwich and taking a bit of it.
"It's disgusting, isn't it?" he asks me. I nod and spit out my food in a napkin.
"I never thought I'd be saying this, but I can't stop thinking about blood." Elena states.
I look at her before walking away from her. "I won't feed from you, Maya. I would never do that." she tells me. I nod, "I know."
"I should have saved you first. You shouldn't be going through this right now." Stefan tells her. "No, if you had saved me, then Matt would be dead. What do you think I'd be going through then?"
Stefan pours himself a drink and takes a sip. Elena gets up and walks over to him. "Stefan, listen to me. You did the right thing. You did what you always do; you respected my choice."
"And what am I supposed to do if Bonnie can't figure out a way to help you, huh? Because then you have another choice to make. Either let yourself die or be a vampire."
"Well then, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it." Elena pauses and laughs, "Oh my God, did– did I just say cross that bridge?"
Elena starts to laugh. I gave her a look; what's so funny about that?
"You're laughing. I'm pretty sure you don't actually think that's funny." Stefan says. She's still laughing, "I– I can't stop though."
"Your emotions are a bit heightened today. A lot heightened." Stefan states. Elena continues to laugh but then she starts to cry. Stefan embraces her, "Hey. Shh, shh. It's okay. It's okay."
"I'm sorry. I..."
Stefan pulls away and cups her face. "Listen to me. No matter what happens, I'm here for you. I can help you."
Elena looks out the window and squints her eyes due to the brightness of the sunlight. "Why don't you go back upstairs where it's dark? I'll clean up." Elena nods and walks back upstairs.
"I feel bad for her," I sigh. Stefan nods, agreeing. Stefan changes the subject, "How are you holding up?"
"I'm fine, at least now I am." I respond, fiddling with my fingers.
Stefan walks out of the kitchen and I follow him. I was stopped short to a couple of officers that had their guns pointed at Stefan.

As they see me, they point their guns at me. I held my arms up.
Elena walks down the stairs. "Maya? Stefan?"
"Elena, don't move."
§
I woke up on the floor. "What the hell?"
I look up and see that I'm in a cellar. I look ahead of me and see Stefan in another cellar diagonal from me.
"Stefan!"
He looks and sees I'm awake, "They've mistaken you for a vampire, Maya. They wouldn't believe me when I said you were human."
"Who's they?" I ask, getting up from the floor. "The Council. They're trying to clear out all the vampires in Mystic Falls."
"Oh," I sigh. "Where's Elena?"
"They took her." he replies. "Are you okay? They didn't hurt you, right?"
I smile at his concern for me. "Yeah, I'm okay."
I heard the door open and the council shoving Rebekah in a cellar next to me. I now couldn't see her since there's a wall covering her. I could only see across from me since there were bars.
"Bloody hell! What are you doing here, Maya?" I hear her from the other side. "They've mistaken me for a vampire. I don't know."
After awhile, the council put Elena in the cage and she was across from me. Stefan and Rebekah were coughing due to the vervain being ventilated through their cages, at least that's what they told me. Elena sits up while holding her head.
"I thought I killed you." I heard Rebekah voice say.
"Where am I?"
"They thought you were a vampire, so they stuck you in here with us."
Elena looks at me, "They thought you were one too?" she asks and I nod in return.
"Where's Stefan?"
Stefan speaks from the cage adjacent to Elena. They can hear each other but cannot see each other. Just how I couldn't see Rebekah.
"Elena, I'm right here. Are you okay?"
"Stefan." she spoke softly.
Elena tries to pull herself up but is too weak to do so. "I didn't feed."
"Ahh, I see what's going on here. You died with vampire blood in your system and you didn't feed and now you're locked up in here without a drop of human blood in sight. That is a problem." I heard Rebekah say.
"Just ignore her." Stefan says.
"Has anyone done the math or shall I? I'd say you've got less than three hours to feed before I get to watch you die all over again." Rebekah states.
Elena tries to break through the bars.
"My day just got a whole lot better." I hear Rebekah and I could imagine her smiling.
Elena stops, beginning to get paler. "We'll get out soon. We always do," I tell her.
§
"Stefan," I look over and see Elena speaking, "What happened?" he asks.
"I'm out of time. I need blood. I'm dying."
Stefan starts to pull himself from the ground as Elena breaths heavily. He shouts, "Hey! Anyone, hey!"
"Will you shut up?!" Rebekah groans.
"You think we're afraid of you?" Stefan shouts. An officer opens the barn door and walks up to Stefan's cage. "You want more vervain? Keep it down."
"Listen to me. Elena's gonna die if you don't let her out of here." Stefan tells him.
The officer glances at Elena who is in bad shape. He looks back at Stefan, "Sorry, not my problem." The officer says.
"She's innocent. Let her out."
The officer begins to walk away. Stefan rushes towards the other side of the cage. "Let her out!"
The officer shoots Stefan in the stomach and he falls to the ground. I gasp, clinging to the bar. The officer points his gun to me, "Don't make me shoot you."
Stefan drags himself over to the wall dividing him from Elena. He pulls the wooden bullet out of his stomach.
"Elena? You still with me?"
Elena is sitting on the other side of the wall. She has grown even paler and is breathing heavily. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm here. I'm okay."
"No, you're not. I can hear you breathing. Damon was right, you should have fed this morning. I'm so sorry."
"Don't be. You had hope. That's all I ever wanted you to have and you had it."
"I love you so much." Stefan says.
"Do you know why I was even on that bridge? I was coming back for you, Stefan. I had to choose and I picked you." Elena tells him and I smile softly.
"Because I love you. No matter what happens, it's the best choice I ever made." Elena places her hand against the wall dividing them. "God. It sucks that I can't see you right now."
"I'm smiling." Elena lets out a sigh, smiling. "Me too."
§
Two officers came back in carrying more vervain with them. "I got this. Bring the other one in." one of the officer calls as the other officer leaves the barn.
"Excuse me? Hello, sir?" Rebekah coughs.
The officer loads his gun and walks over to her cage. "I thought I told you to shut up."
"Here's the thing, my family we–we have money, castles, apartments, jewelry; just name your price and let me out." Rebekah tries.
I look to see the officer gets closer to the cage. "I'd much rather watch you die."
I stood up, "Please let me out. I'm not one of them."
The officer points his gun at me before shooting me in the leg. "Agh!"
I press my hand on my leg and blood started to spill out. "Ow!" I hiss, tears starting to spill as the pain starts to spread everywhere.
Stefan gets back up and rushes back to the bars. "Let Maya out. She isn't a vampire!"
"I'm going to die if you don't help me," I say weakly to the officer. "I'm not a vampire."
"Shut up!" he hisses at me.
"She's telling the truth, she's a human just like you." Stefan defends me.
"How do I know you're not lying?" the officer asks. I look back at him, "If I take this bullet out right now. I won't heal."
"It's a wooden bullet. Of course you're not supposed to heal." he responds and I close my eyes, taking in the pain. "Then I guess we'll never know."
"The–the vervain. It's not affecting her." Stefan says and I open my eyes, watching the officer. I watch him take a handful of vervain and he shoves it into my cell and it touches my skin. But, of course it doesn't sting.
The officer nods and pulls out the keys and unlocking my cellar. I got up, limping out of the cellar.
"Thank you," I smile, "but I have to help my friends." I say and grab his gun, knocking it on his face which causes him to pass out.
I turn to my sister. "Elena, feed from me." I sat down next to her cellar.
"What? No. I can't do that." she shakes her head. I push my hand through my cellar. "Please. You're going to die if you don't."
She grabs my hand and puts it to her mouth, taking the blood from me. I hiss and look at her, seeing her eyes are red and veins under them. She starts to regain the color on her face.
She pushes my hand away. "Thank you."
I get up, groaning. Pain shoots on my leg. "Ow!"
I get the keys from the unconscious officer and unlock Stefan's cellar, then Elena's, then Rebekah's.
"Come here,"
I turn and see Stefan holding out his wrist which he bit into. "You have to take this wooden bullet out first." I say.
He does as I say and I wince at the pain. "Here," he places his wrist on my mouth, healing me. "Thank you."
§
I step out of my bathroom after taking a shower and getting ready. It's now nighttime and I'm getting prepared for bed.
I let out a huge sigh, putting my brush down on my dresser and hear my phone vibrating on my night stand. I walk over to it and see the caller I.D. Klaus.
I inhale a breath and answer it, "Hello?" I was growing nervous. Who would have Klaus' phone. "Ah, Maya. Nice to hear your voice again."
No, that's impossible.
"Klaus?" I gasp. "How– how are you even alive?" I question, putting my phone on my shoulder with the help of the side of my face as I take off my pajamas, throwing on some random clothes.
"Jumped into Tyler's body, jumped into mine, and here I am." he states and I broke out a smile, taking a shirt from my closet and putting that one.
"Where are you?"
§
I open his huge door, stepping into the mansion. I went to close the door but Rebekah struts past me, a very angry look on her face.
"Oh, Maya. Do us all a favor and drop your feelings for my narcissistic bastard of a brother. You deserve better than this." she tells me before walking out of the house and slamming the door shut.
I step into the room Klaus was in and I see blood splattered on the wall. "What did you say to Rebek–"
I didn't even get to finish my sentence when he flashes in front of me, cupping my face and connecting our lips. I gasp into the kiss, immediately accepting this.
It felt so wrong yet so right at the same time. I deepen the kiss, leaning into him. We pull away for a moment and gave him a smile.
The side of my face is now pressed against his chest, "I'm sorry for everything. I'm sorry for hurting you and losing your trust."
"I take it that you missed me?" he asks and I roll my eyes, laughing and nodding at his response. "Of course I did."
