I didn't feel any pain.
I didn't feel anything as I toppled to the ground.
I barely remember the door slamming open and someone pulling me into their arms. "M-mom?" I mumbled as every sound in the room muffled almost as if I was underwater.
Was I dying?
I looked at the person that was holding me, pressing their hands down on my chest as they looked around frantically.
"C-c..." I started but felt the metallic taste of blood in my mouth causing me to gag and choke. Whoever was holding me noticed, and held me on my side as multiple people rushed into the room.
I could feel myself losing consciousness as people swarmed around me, tending to the wound that I couldn't feel.
"Keep your eyes open, Violet!" I heard a female yell but her voice was so distant it felt like she was down the hall and not in the room with me.
"Is there an exit wound?" A male asked as black spots riddled my vision. "No exit wound. We have to go to surgery." A female said as the pain that was numbed by shock started to fill my body.
"I'm dying." I mumbled as I looked up at the person holding me. "No, you're not." They said as they combed their fingers through my hair.
"I'm dying." I repeated as I started to lose consciousness again. "Keep your eyes open,Vi!" Someone yelled as I was lifted onto a bed. "Sleepy." I whispered as I closed my eyes.
I could feel the room spinning even with my eyes closed.
I was dying.
"Stay with us, Violet! You're gonna be okay!" The voice I recognized as Sophia yelled as they rushed me to an OR.
I opened my mouth to respond but the horrible metallic taste filled my throat again as my eyes rolled back into my head.
"Violet sweetie, it's time for school." Mom said as she shook me awake. I opened my eyes to see I was in my old bedroom.
"Five more minutes." I mumbled as she chuckled and sat next to me, combing her fingers through my hair. "You said that five minutes ago. Dad is making biscuits and gravy." She said as I grinned.
"Alright, ya got me there." I said then got out of the bed. When I walked downstairs, mom and dad were dancing to Frank Sinatra music as the sound of bacon sizzling filled my ears.

"There she is!" Dad yelled as he started dancing with me. "Can I skip school today?" I asked with hope in my voice. "Hmmmm...how are your grades?" He asked as mom smirked at me.
"Straight A's." I said proudly as he grinned at me. "What do you think? Should we let her?" Dad asked mom as she set a plate of food in front of me.
"Don't you have a test on Monday? In Fink's class?" Mom asked as I sighed. "Yeah. I'll study extra hard. I promise." I said and held my pinky up as she looked at dad.
He already had his phone up to his ear with a smirk on his face. "Hi...my name is Nick Richards. I need to call out my daughter, Violet. She woke up this morning with a fever so she won't be in today." He said with a smirk and I smiled widely at him.
The memory then faded away, leaving me in a black void.
"H-hello?" I called out as my voice echoed through the void. I felt fear rise in my chest as I floated around, looking for someone to tell me what was going on.
I heard screaming a crying coming from my right so I decided to go towards it. As I did this, a scene opened up in front of me.
Two cars were mangled together as ambulances and fire trucks lit up the void around me.
I saw my parents holding eachother and sobbing, "M-mom...D-dad?" I whispered as they continued sobbing into eachother.
"They can't hear you." Someone said from behind me. I turned around and saw a girl around my age. She had long blonde hair, a button nose with rosey cheeks.
"Who are you?" I asked as my brow scrunched with confusion. "I'm Elizabeth, I watch after you." She said with a warm smile. "So like....you're my guardian angel?" I asked as she laughed a twinkling laugh. "Kinda. That's what humans call us, but it's not technically what we are." She explained as I watched the car accident play out in front of me.
"So...what are you then?" I asked and turned away from the accident, not wanting to watch it anymore.
"I'm you." She said simply as I scrunched my brow. "What do you mean you're me?" I asked as she giggled. "I'm you but in an alternate reality." She said as she wrapped her arm around my shoulders and walked with me into the black void again.

"Okay...why am I here? Am I dead?" I asked as another scene opened up in front of us.
We were in an OR watching as doctors and nurses scrambled to help the person they were working on. "You're in the inbetween." Elizabeth explained as I watched Sophia and Brady intricately working on the body on the table
There was something off about the situation though. The lights were mostly off except for a blinking white light that was shining in the hallway. There were spotlights where they were so they could still see what they were doing.
"What are we watching?" I asked quietly as she sighed. "That's you, Violet." Elizabeth said as my breath hitched in my throat. "O-oh." I said and clenched my jaw as tears formed in my eyes.
"How am I here then?" I asked as she smiled sympathetically. "Well. You're not alive...but you're not technically dead." Elizabeth explained as I nodded slowly.
I couldn't wrap my head around what was actually going on. Was I hallucinating from the anesthesia or was I just high as hell and didn't remember smoking?
"What exactly happened to me?" I asked as I looked down at my body, searching for an indicator. "They didn't tell me. You won't know until you either live or die." She explained as I nodded.
"Are my parents here?" I asked quietly as I tried to figure what part of my body they were working on.
Why couldn't I remember what happened?
"They're on the other side." Elizabeth said as I frowned. "Can I see them?" I asked as she shook her head. "Not until they officially declare you as dead." Elizabeth said as I nodded.
"Oh my god! Does Colby know I'm dying? Did someone tell him?" I asked as she cocked her head at me. "Who?" She asked as I brought my hand to my chest. "Colby...my boyfriend." I said as I felt tears burning my eyes.
"Oh!! You mean my Jack. Uh..I don't know! Again they don't really tell me anything. They just sent me here and said I needed to be here for you." Elizabeth said as I nodded.
"So are you dead?" I asked as she giggled and shook her head. "Nope. I'm sleeping. I won't remember this conversation or any of this when I wake up." She explained and I nodded.
"This is crazy." I mumbled as I watched them work. It felt surreal that I was essentially watching myself die. I wish I could remember what happened. That last thing I remembered was getting my cart to walk to the room I was paged to.
"Is there a reason I can't remember what happened?" I asked as she shrugged. "Sometimes they take your memory of the moment so you can be at peace while in between." Elizabeth said as I nodded.
"Who's they?" I asked as she shrugged. "I don't know. God? Satan? I don't know. We just refer to them as they." She said as I nodded slowly.
"How long do we have to wait?" I asked then sat down and pulled my knees to my chest. "It depends." She said as I frowned.
I started thinking about Colby and the friends I had made. Colby would be crushed if I died..at least I think he would. Maybe he wouldn't. Maybe he would be able to move on like I never existed.
It didn't matter.
I was going to survive.
We sat there for a little while, waiting for something to happen. I watched as Aisha stroked my hair down, talking to me as Brady and Sophia worked tirelessly to bring me back.
I wish I could hear what they were saying, but the void was silent.
Suddenly the scene faded away and a bright light replaced it. "Well. I guess it's time." Elizabeth said as my eyes widened.
"Time for what?" I asked and turned to her, except she wasn't there anymore. "Elizabeth! Time for what?!" I yelled as fear enveloped my body.
"Okay Violet...you can do this." I whispered as I looked at the bright light.
Was I about to die? I guess I would have to find out.
I looked around for another second before I took a deep breath and walked towards the light.

But if you give it a chance, it might surprise you. The story is not what you expect. I first posted The Brotherhood online in 2001 and finished it in 2013.
