《The Thing About Apholie: A Wolfwalkers Fanfiction》Chapter 3: The Injury

After a while, they arrived at a cliff. It was wide enough to fit, not just Apholie and Abigail, but the entire pack. It was covered with multi-coloured flowers and ferns of all shapes and sizes. Vines stretched themselves over most of the excess rocks, all covered with the same carvings Abigail had seen before. The view was the entirety of Abigail's town. People and smoke from fireplaces were easily seen from the cliff.

"Well, how about this?!" Apholie said, dancing around. Abigail could say nothing to respond. She was in awe of what she was seeing.

"How?.....Wha?....." she said, not quite being able to finish words just yet. After she got herself together, she said, "How did you and your mother find this?"

"Just pure luck," she said happily. "We were just wandering around the den as wolves one night when I tripped and fell and ended up here," She gestured around the area.

"Totally worth a scratch on the nose, though," she said, as ran up to Abigail and wrapped an arm around her. "Look at it!"

(Definitely worth a scratch on the nose, ) Abigail thought. But she was interrupted by Apholie pulling her away.

"Well, we'd better get going!" she said in a bouncy tone. "I'd promised Mami I'd get some food for dinner tonight,"

The two of them dashed off with the rest of the pack. Abigail was a bit behind Apholie and she kept getting teased by her for it. Apholie leapt over a fallen tree with ease. Abigail did the same. She had managed to catch up to Apholie easily afterwards. They were laughing happily and Abigail felt amazing. But, that feeling quickly subsided as she felt one of her feet get dragged upwards. She cried out as she dangled in the air.

She was stuck in a rope trap. How lovely.

"Apholie!" Abigail yelled. "I've gotten stuck!"

Apholie stopped running and turned around. She immediately started to laugh.

"Apholie, this isn't funny!" Abigail said in an annoyed tone.

"Alright, alright," Apholie said calmly. "I'll come over and get you down,"

Apholie ran back and climbed a nearby tree. She crawled over the branch to where the vine was looped around and gripped it.

"Try not to move around so much, okay?" she said, lowering herself a little closer.

Abigail silently obeyed her instruction and didn't move. Just then, a wasp flew right in front of Abigail's eyes. Completely ignoring Apholie's instruction, she began to scream.

"AHHHH, wasp! Get away!" she yelled, swatted at it violently.

"Abi, stop movin'!" Apholie said angrily. "You're shaking the branch!" Apholie began to slip.

"Stop it! Get away from me!" said Abigail, having not succeeded at getting rid of the wasp.

"ABIGAIL!!!" Apholie screamed.

But it was already too late. Apholie's grip gave out.

She slipped off the branch and began to fall. Abigail reached out to catch her, but Apholie accidentally bit her hand in the process. The vine snapped and Abigail fell down.

"OW!!! Apholie!!" she said, snapping her hand back to examine the injury. Apholie landed on the ground on her feet with no effort.

"Oh, no" Abigail heard her say to herself, knowing what she had just done. "Oh, no, no, no, no,"

Abigail bite had fluttering yellow lines all around it. She looked up an Apholie running towards her. But something was horrifyingly different.

Everything around her had gone a monotone colour. Worse still, she could .

"Apholie, what's happening?!" said a very much panicking Abigail. Apholie was panicking as well.

"Oh, no, what have I done?!" she said, bending to take Abigail's arm. She stared at it for a moment then informed Abigail on what she was about to do.

"Okay, we still have some time," she said. A little bit of panic still remained in her voice.

"Time for what?" Abigail asked.

"Time for me heal it," she replied. Then she muttered under her breath, "Before it's too late..."

Abigail both wondered and panicked at what that meant.

She held out her other hand over Abigail's bite. The bells and backdrop returned.

Abigail stopped panicking and looked at what Apholie was doing.

Apholie howling with her hand held up high. The wolves did the same as Apholie brought her hand down the bite. It disappeared instantly.

"There," Apholie said after the magic faded. "I hope that worked,"

"I'm sorry, what worked?" Abigail asked. But just then the village bell rung. That bell was for everyone to return within the village walls. Children have run a little too far away from the village and often don't hear the bell when it rings. Scared, cold and alone, they would run into the forest for safety.

Those children were never seen again.

"Oh, I'd better get back," Abigail said in hurry, getting up. "Thanks for healing me!"

And she ran off back towards town.

Apholie was still a little worried at this rate. She hoped she had done enough.

She hoped she hadn't just turned her only friend into something she never wanted to be.
